Frank Zemlyak

Zemlyak, Frank - Age 75, of Murphy’s Cove. It is with a sense of loss and deep sadness that we share the passing of Frank Zemlyak, a loving husband, father and experienced scientist on March 5, 2024. Frank will be dearly missed by his wife of 27 years, Anita (Lamey); and his daughters, Rosalee and Rebecca; and grandchildren, Savannah and Evan.

Born in Rijeka, Croatia, his family emigrated to Canada through Pier 21 in the 1950s.  Frank is survived by his sister, Sonya of Halifax; and brother, Luke (Vivien) of Calgary. He is predeceased by his father, Franz; mother, Matilda; step-mother, Elvira; and brother, Joseph.

Frank was a longtime resident of the Ship Harbour area, first residing in DeBaies Cove and recently in Murphy’s Cove. Frank was a man of many talents and interests: a scuba diver, an amateur astronomer, a wonderful chef, an excellent craftsman and a world traveller. He enjoyed sailing his Alberg 29 Tachyon and sailed Boston-Halifax on the tall ship Mir. He and Anita enjoyed many visits to Europe, especially to Sweden to see dear friends, Leif and Marie Anderson.

Frank commenced his remarkable career in Oceanography in 1976, joining the Chemical Oceanography Division at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. Transitioning to the Ocean Sciences Division in the mid-1990s, Frank continued to play a pivotal role in Canadian and international programs dedicated to unraveling the intricacies of ocean climate. His work took him to the Arctic and Antarctic regions and around the globe.

Frank was proud of his record of accumulated sea time spent conducting research on board the ships of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans including the CSS Hudson, CSS Baffin and CSS Dawson. For over a decade he was involved in an internationally coordinated hydrographic survey of the Labrador Sea. Data from this work contributed to the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

He participated in the ground-breaking journey on the Swedish icebreaker Oden in 1991, when this historic expedition marked the first voyage to the North Pole by a non-nuclear powered ship. Frank participated in many expeditions to high latitudes on international vessels, including several expeditions on the I/B Oden, German R/V Polarstern and the Norwegian R/V Lance.

In 1994, he visited the North Pole again aboard the Louis S. St-Laurent as the Coast Guard vessel, along with the USCGC Polar Sea, becoming the first North American surface vessels to reach the North Pole.
During these expeditions he always made good friends with all aboard, not only the scientific party, but the whole crew from the deckhands to the captain. He was a natural entertainer and was often the life of the party on these long expeditions to remote regions.

His retirement in 2006 marked the end of an era, yet his legacy lives on in the scientific advancements he contributed to and in the memories of those fortunate enough to work alongside him. Frank always demonstrated a commitment to his work that went above and beyond the call of duty even under the most adverse circumstances that often would occur while working at sea.

Let us remember Frank as a man who embraced life with humour, love and quiet strength. He's now on his next adventure and will be missed by all who knew him.

Frank’s family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Petpeswick Yacht Club, 434 East Petpeswick Road, Musquodoboit Harbour, on Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 2 pm to 4 pm.

Donations in his name may be made to the ALS Society of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.

David Wyn Jones

Jones, David Wyn - 1943 – 2024  Born in Prestatyn, North Wales, Wyn attended Ysgol Ardudwy in Harlech and met his future wife, Carole there. Following graduation, Wyn worked in sales for a book publishing company and spent his spare time playing his double base at various clubs in London and Liverpool. In 1967, he and Carole married in Harlech and emigrated to Canada. A daughter, born in 1971 and a son in 1978 completed his family. The following years were spent in Ontario working in the sale of art, ceramic tiles, and interior design. In 1983, he was awarded the SAM (Sales and Marketing) award and, in 1987, he opened his own interior design company in Eden Mills.

Retiring in 2007, Wyn and Carole moved to Nova Scotia where he designed their new home overlooking the ocean. Retirement years were spent travelling throughout different islands in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Wyn was a self-taught artist and chose to paint scenes from nature around his home. He was an avid reader of historical novels and could always be counted on to launch a stimulating conversation on past and present politics.  Many hours were spent listening to classical music and watching the ever-changing movement of the ocean. He loved to cook and always insisted that a touch of wine improved any recipe! Throughout his life, Wyn always had a dog – wherever he went, so did his dog. His latest one, still a pup, walked with him daily along the shore.

Wyn was proud of his children. The birth of each one, their accomplishments and their weddings were special highlights in his life – exceeded only by the addition of three grandchildren to his family!

Wyn’s life was unexpectedly cut short on March 4, 2024, at the age of 81, by cancer and he passed away, as he wished, at home to the sound of the waves.

Wyn is survived by his wife, Carole; daughter, Carys and husband, Ian; son, Gareth and wife, Viki; grandchildren, Anwyn, Benjamin and Elliot; and, in the UK, his sister, Megan (Jim) Frost; and nieces, Rhiannon and Bethan.

He is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Gladys Jones.

Our thanks to the Home Care Team, the paramedics and the staff at MAID who helped to fulfill Wyn’s last wishes.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 24th in The Old School, Musquodoboit Harbour at 3 p.m.

Frances’ passion in life was her music. After receiving her first guitar in childhood, she taught herself to play and entertain with her acoustic and 12-string guitars, as well as the harmonica, the piano and organ, a little violin and she loved playing the spoons. She enjoyed anything to do with music, spending time with family and friends, and was a real people person. She could walk or drive up and talk to almost anyone.

For years she worked in the clam business and was so grateful for her little home in Chezzetcook that overlooked the inlet where so many locals made their living from the flats. She could always be found out-and-about, walking around her village and after ‘retiring’, she loved to drive all over Nova Scotia. Monastery, Antigonish County was a favourite destination for road trips with her dear friend, Ada Bonang. A special part of the road trip was stopping for a good feed of fish and chips.  She loved her sauerkraut and pork dinners, and watching the news.

Her faith was a special comfort to her and she wanted everyone to know about the message of Our Lady of Fatima.

Frances fervently promoted the traditional Rosary. Please pray a Hail Mary or any part of this Rosary for her soul. May God bless you all.

No flowers please; however if you desire, a small donation may be made to:

Jo Ann Marjorie Burrell

Burrell, Jo Ann Marjorie – aged 66, peacefully passed away in her sleep on February 1, 2024, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born and raised in the North End of Halifax, she and her husband, Leonard, decided to move across the bridge making Cole Harbour their home and raise their family. After their children had grown, Jo Ann went back to work eventually finding joy in retail jewellery sales.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Leonard; her children, Nicholas (Andrea) and Ashley Fougere (Adam); and her cherished granddaughters, Kaylee, Sophie, and Emma. She filled her home with happiness and laughter and was always the hostess with the mostest! She took joy in adorning her home with beautiful decorations for all seasons and holidays.
