Barbara Kathleen Fisher

Fisher, Barbara Kathleen – of Middle Stewiacke. It is with deep sadness we announce Mum's death on Thursday, February 1, 2024, in Debert Court.

She leaves behind daughters, Sheila Fisher (Cheryl), Annette Fisher (Troy), Patricia Fisher (Sterling); sons, Phillip, Andrew (Janice), and Paul; her dear grandchildren, Natalie (Craig), Ivan (Angie), Lindsay (Connor), Calan, Jordan, Diana (Michael), Nicole (Matt), Katie (James), Jonathan (Megan), Kenzie (Jamie), Jenna (Tyler), Griffin (Bronwyn); eight great-grandchildren; her brother, Gordon Chaplin (Shirley); as well as many nieces and nephews. 

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Fisher, 2003; daughter, Gail Fisher Allen, 1980; daughter-in-law, Sandra (McCallum) Fisher, 2022; her only sister, Mabel Redden (Ronald); brothers, John Chaplin (Marion), Roy Chaplin (Rose); sisters-in-law, Agnes Redden (John), Susan Bonn (Walter). 

She was the eldest child of the late Clarence and Grace Chaplin, Middle Stewiacke, and lived all her life in the Stewiacke Valley, a place she loved and was proud to call home.  For several years Mum was employed with the Truro Golf Club and the Brookfield Junior High School. She was a caring member of the Middle Stewiacke United Church, a Sunday School teacher, Explorers, and CGIT leader over some years, also a member of the UCW for several years.  Mum was a charter member of the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society, and a dedicated worker at the Stewiacke Valley Museum, especially with the Museum's 'Valley Scrapbooks'. Mum always looked forward to having our family together and her enthusiasm to make those times special, especially at Christmas and Thanksgiving are treasured memories for all of us. 

Thank you to all the staff at Debert Court for all of your kindness, Mum really enjoyed her time and our family appreciate the great care she received.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, February 11, 2024 at 2 p.m. in Middle Stewiacke Cemetery, Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Family flowers only. Visitation with the family will be held in the Middle Stewiacke United Church Hall following the service.

Gordon Brooks Henderson

Henderson, Gordon Brooks –Age 79, of Bible Hill passed away January 29, 2024 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Bayhead, he was a son of the late Russell and Doris (Tattrie) Henderson.

Gordon was self-employed most of his working life as a heavy duty mechanic. His passion was antique cars, whether it was restoring them or enjoying a drive in them. He could be found at most any antique car show. When he wasn’t involved with the cars, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time at the campground and playing cards.

He will always be missed by children, Sharon (Joseph), Debbie (Steve), Kevin (Lise), Russell (Krista); grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan, Justin, Christopher, Jeremy, Trenton, Madison, Jill; brother, Roy (Starr); and special friend, Gail.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Anne (Best); siblings, Danny, Johnny and Edith.

Cremation has taken place.

A graveside service will be held in Bible Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Starr, Cathy Ann – Age 65, passed away January 25, 2024.

Cathy is survived by her husband, Roy; daughter, Tina; son, Joseph; brothers, Stephen, David, Ricky; and her grandsons, Jonathan, Vincent and Caden.

Cathy drove a school bus for 23 years. She loved bingo and cards.

A Celebration of Life will be held February 17 from 2 – 4 p.m. in Porters Lake Community Centre.

CPO2 (Ret'd) John C. Boutilier CD2

Boutilier CD2, CPO2 (Ret’d) John C. – It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle. John passed peascefully in CEHHC, Truro with his family surrounding him.

John was born in Glace Bay to Elizabeth (Hayes) and the late Hubert Boutilier.

After high school graduation, John attended Mount Allison University in NB but after a year he found himself going into a new direction and joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1977. John served his country for 34 years and 9 months. During that span he served aboard His Majesty’s Ships Assiniboine, Ottawa, Fraser, Saguenay, Fredericton, Ville de Quebec, Montreal, Charlottetown and Iroquois. His shore postings were spent at CFFS Halifax, CFB Halifax, CFS Shelburne, CFNES Halifax, FMF Cape Scott and DGMEPM Hull, Ontario. It was while at CFS Shelburne that he met his wife of 37 years, Mannie and began a life together of raising their small family.

Better known as “Boots” to his large circle of friends, it was only Mannie who called him John, which always made him laugh because it made his friends wonder who she was referring to.

John had many loves, the sea was his favourite place to be while serving, especially the North Sea on NATO trips, “the rougher the waters the better” he would say.

After retirement John got to enjoy many of his hobbies, he purchased his dream motor bike and joined the Defenders Motorcycle Club, Chapter 15 in Truro. He held many positions during the time he was a member. John and Mannie would take long trips on the spur of the moment to New Hampshire, PEI and Newfoundland on that bike.

John was also a member of the Stewiacke Legion and held the position of 1st VP for one term.

John loved a good game of cribbage and taught his wife and kids how to play and letting them win initially a game or two. He was also an avid reader and read every Stephen King novel printed. He loved making his own beer and wine that he would enjoy with the meals he would cook for his family. He loved baking for the kids and was not afraid to try any recipe, but his favourite was cooking Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner for his family whether in Stewiacke or Cape Breton.

John leaves behind, to remember all the beautiful memories made, his wife of 37 years, Manuela “Mannie” (Odorico); children, Kendra (Mike) and Steven (Kiesha); mother, Elizabeth (Hayes) Boutilier; brothers, Brent and Wayne; sisters, Bernadette (Joe) and Rose Anne; and several nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his father, Hubert Boutilier; sister, Sylvia Lyons; and infant grandson, Benjamin Vernon John Boutilier.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

As per John’s request, no funeral service will be held but a Celebration of Life BBQ will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, John requests donations, if you wish, be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Victor Andrew Stevens

Stevens, Victor Andrew – 79 years old, passed away January 22, 2024 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour. He was a son of the late Andrew and Rita Stevens of Owls Head.

Victor is survived by his wife, Marjorie; son, Darren; daughters, Amanda and Kinova; brothers, Leon and Seldon; sisters, Viola, Lillian, Gladys, Barb and Dolly; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his loving parents; brothers, Chester, Herman, Erving and Venice; sisters, Violet and Goldie.

There will be no service.

Victor will be missed by all.

Lisa Charlotte Fraser

Fraser, Lisa Charlotte – Lisa, aged 42, died suddenly on Sunday and we mourn her passing immensely.

She leaves behind a devastated husband, Ben; and two wonderful, amazing daughters, Edith, 10 and Lucy, 6. She was the center of our world, the person who had a vision of what she wanted for her life and family and she made it happen.

She was born in Calgary and grew up in the lower mainland of BC. She went back to Calgary for university and since then, she lived and worked all around the world, with significant stops in Ethiopia, Australia, Scotland, and back to Coquitlam before discovering the eastern shore of Nova Scotia a couple of years ago.

She leaves behind an extended and wonderfully complicated family who have all shaped her into the incredible woman she was. She loved and meant the world to Lionel, Carol, Tracy, Danny, Greg, Sharra, Bob and Gaye and all of their extended families. She was an only child who got to have seven siblings. Tadd, Shane, Dax, Jake, Layne, James and Nicole.

Lisa worked at HSBC Canada for the last 15 years and really embraced her career in banking. She loved being involved in the investigation of financial crime. Very few things gave her more pleasure than figuring out what a dodgy person was doing with their account. She loved conducting internal interviews and catching someone in a lie. She was mentored by some amazing colleagues and got a great deal of satisfaction at being able to pass on her experience and expertise to others along the way.

Lisa first came to Nova Scotia on a summer road trip vacation in 2021 and we fell in love with it immediately. We went back to BC and immediately tried to figure out how we could move here to live and raise the girls. In the spring of 2022, we bought a house on Lake Echo without ever viewing it in person. We sold our place, packed up the kids, the car and dogs and drove across the country to start a new life in a new community we had never been to before, where we didn’t know a soul. We hoped for a change in life, and for the girls to grow up in a place they could call home. It’s been almost 2 years and we have been welcomed in a way we could never have anticipated. This was the happiest Lisa has ever been. She was often an intensely private person, and yet here she wanted to be involved. In the people and the work of the Lioness club, Bell Park Elementary, Orenda Canoe Club, she found something that she wanted to be part of. She had found her forever home.

Lisa loved to be creative and make things, and her home is filled with her artwork, her exquisite hand-sewn quilts, Halloween costumes and Christmas decorations, straw hats made from dried grass from the backyard, with jars of jams and kimchi lining the cupboards and bread baking in the oven. Martinique beach held a special place in her heart, a place that no matter the weather or the time of year she loved to walk and pick up sea glass or driftwood or discarded lobster floats.

She loved being around, in and on Lake Echo. The ever-changing tapestry full of birds, muskrats, ice and snow, sunrises, floods, fog and hurricanes. Summer days floating on the MV Holiday Island, paddling around to friends and neighbour’s yards from the kayak or going for a reinvigorating Penguin Plunge swim on New Years Day. She planted fruit and nut trees in the yard overlooking the water that will keep her memory and vision alive long after the rawness of her leaving us mellows.

She was the center our life, an intelligent, kind and caring mother, daughter, wife and friend.

Lisa’s life was filled with joy and fun and a Celebration of her Life will be held on February 2nd, 2024 at the Lake Echo Community Centre from 4 until 7 p.m.

Beulah Creelman (Stewart) Fleming

Fleming (Stewart), Beulah Creelman – age 92, of Truro and formerly of Middle Musquodoboit, passed away on January 20, 2024. She was a daughter of the late Ernie and Blanche Stewart. 

She is survived by her son, Barry (Gerard); daughter, Yvonne (Karl); son-in-law, Gary (Peggy); grandchildren, Jonathan, Jody (Ted), Sheree (Jamie), Aurora (Patrick), Stephanie, and Jason (Janet); great-grandchildren, Logan, Kassandra, E.J., Braden, Khloey, and Raelyn; and sisters Joyce, Polly, Phyllis and Darlene (Gary). 

She was predeceased by her husband, Earle; daughters, Debbie, Peggy; son-in-law,

Wayne Hamilton; grandson, Bradley; sister, Mary; brother, Skip; sister-in-law, Shirley; and brothers-in-law, Neil, Frank, Richard, and John.

Beulah loved her dances, doing crosswords and loved playing crib and other card games. 

She never liked to be late for anything and she never left the house unless she was dressed to the nines. 

Beulah was a school teacher, business owner and worked in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital for many years.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Angela Allison for all of her care.

Cremation has taken place.

Patrick "Pat" Bernard MacNeil

MacNeil, Patrick “Pat” Bernard – passed away peacefully on January 18, 2024 in Camp Hill Veterans Hospital, Halifax. Dad was born to the late Joseph and Amelia (Barrie) MacNeil. He was a carpenter who lived most of his life in Westmount.
Dad was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved spending time at "the bungalow" in Margaree. Skating and gardening were also some of his favorite hobbies.
Dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by daughters, Susan, Nancy, Roberta (Robert); sons, Stephen (Susan) and Vincent; grandchildren, Carlie, Laine, Josh, Jeremy, Nicole, Gabriel and Jorge; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dad is predeceased by his wife, Agnes; parents; and siblings, Marie MacNeil, Sadie Thompson (Jim), John MacNeil, Catherine V. MacNeil, Peggy Donaldson (Lorne), Ann Landry (Ed), Edward (Elizabeth), Alexander (Louise), Cecilia Leveck, Dorothy Stewart (Claude), Robert (Marguerite), Donald (Marie), Joan Cunningham (Vince) and David.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place at a later date.

Kimberley Ann Wilson

Wilson, Kimberley Ann – age 58, of Grand Lake, passed away on January 15th, 2024 in Halifax Infirmary following a brief battle with lung cancer. 

Kim leaves behind the love of her life, Kevin Poole; daughter, Sydney Poole (Jonathan Doiron); sister, Susan Verge; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Donna and Cecil Poole; nephews, Jed Wilson (Katrina), Derek Tully (Barbara), Lewis Verge, and Jacob Wilson; great-niece, Lena Tully; great-nephews, Emerson and Roy Wilson; and so many more cherished family members & friends. 

Predeceased by her loving mother, Gloria Wilson (Swift); brother, Kevin Wilson; sister-in-law; Heather Tully; and many more family members and friends. 

Kim, being the selfless person she was, always put others ahead of herself. Whether it was at home, work, or just in life in general. Kevin and Sydney were the center of her universe (along with her two fur grandbabies - Sadie & Daisy!) and she made this known to everyone, every single day. This was the purest, unconditional, unbreakable love anyone could ever imagine. Kim will be remembered for many things; her huge heart and loving acceptance of everyone being just one. She had a way of making you feel completely accepted, no matter what your story was. She truly saw the best in everyone, and never made anyone feel judged. It was an honor and a privilege to know, love, and be loved by Kim. 

Kim will also be remembered for her love of feeding those who meant the most to her. You could be guaranteed when you showed up at her house, you would be greeted with a smile and a hug, the kettle on and a snack or meal ready for you. Some of the fondest family memories consist of Kim in the kitchen, cooking a meal big enough to feed the army and then some. Although there were lots of famous meals she made, many will miss "mo's sandwiches" - including the Rapco guys from Kevin's work. 

If you asked Kim what some of the finer things in life were, she would say her family & friends, home-cooked meals, a hot cup of tea, and staying home with the dogs. 

Kim was employed with Oakfield Golf & Country Club for the past decade. She truly loved going to work and looked forward to seeing her coworkers and all of the members each day. To everyone at Oakfield, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your love and support during this time has been incredible. There are no words to express just how appreciative we are. 

Prior to Oakfield, Kim was employed with Sobeys for over 25 years. She met many great people here who turned into life-long friends. 

There is so much to say, but no words seem good enough for our beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter-in-law, aunt, friend. If love alone could have saved Kim, she would have lived forever. 

Special thanks to the emergency department staff in Cobequid Community Care Centre, and the emergency department staff in Halifax Infirmary. Your compassionate and respectful care in our loved one’s final days did not go unnoticed. We as a family appreciate you all. 

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

A Celebration of Life to honour Kim will be held on Sunday, January 28th, from 2-4 p.m., at Oakfield Golf & Country Club.

Jack Richardson

Richardson, Jack – It is with great sadness the family of Jack Richardson, age 66, of Dartmouth, announce his passing on January 13, 2024 with family by his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He will be forever in our hearts and never forgotten.

Jack was born in Halifax to the late Florence and Wilfred Richardson.

Leaving to mourn are his wife of 33 years, Mary (Anderson); daughter, Glenda Richardson (J Little); and granddaughter, Zoey, Valley, NS; brother, Bud Richardson (Carol); brother-in-law, Danny Anderson (Martha); sister in-law, Barbara MacDonald; nieces and nephews, Kevin, Derek, Amber, Ryan, Ashley, Cody, Todd and Chad; and many dear friends. Jack is predeceased by his grandson, John Wyatt Little; and sisters, Freda and Sheila.  

Jack wasn’t afraid of hard work, and he took great pride in every project he took on. He started out his early years by delivering newspapers in a downtown Halifax neighborhood, where he grew up. For the past 28 years he worked at CTV Atlantic (formally ATV/ASN).  Prior to that he worked for Maritime Tile, Ocean Tile and Atlantic Playland. Jack was also known for being a handyman and offered helped when needed to family and friends. He was skilled, kind and a man of his word, with great character and integrity, gaining well deserved respect and admiration from all who knew him. Even though he was known for looking grumpy (Happy Jack) he was a big softie at heart and certainly not afraid to show his emotions.

Jack had many passions. He loved firetrucks and had a room with everything fire related. Jack and Mary loved to travel and had many adventures over the years. As of late, Jack’s passion was spending time at their camper in Wilmot right outside of Middleton. Jack enjoyed many hours sitting around the fire, having a game of washer toss, and drinking ice caps with great friends, while listening to the Golden Oldies. 

Jack was a well-loved man which has been shown time and time again. He appreciated every check in, every call, every visit from family, friends, work family and the honorary work family (aka Mary’s work/The Salvation Army). We appreciate all of the love, support, and thoughtful gifts you have brought to Jack during such a difficult time. 

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many healthcare providers that tended to Jack from the onset of his diagnosis to his final days. In particular, thank you to Darlene Langille and the Palliative Care Team, Dr. Ravi Ramjeesingh, Shelby and the Oncology Team.   

Cremation has taken place at Jack’s request.

There will be a Celebration of Life held at the Salvation Army Resource Centre at 328 Herring Cove Road in Halifax on Saturday January 27th at 1pm, Burial at a later date in Pleasant Point Public Cemetery Halifax County.

If desired, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to NS Cancer Society, The Salvation Army Christmas Program or your charity of choice.

Lorraine Louise (Muise) Corkum

Corkum (Muise), Lorraine Louise - age 90 of Enfield passed away peacefully and lovingly surrounded by her family on January 13, 2024 in Northwood Ivy Meadows.  Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late George Henry and Lucy (Poirier) Muise.
She lived in Halifax, then moved to Oldham, and settled later in Enfield.
Lorraine’s working years were spent at Moirs Chocolate, Roy O’Briens Packing and then several other positions in the service industry.
When Lorraine retired, she kept busy with her late husband of 61 years, Earl and enjoyed visiting and spending time with her family and friends. She and Earl would stop at nothing to try to help their kids any way they could. She certainly missed Earl in her last few years.
Those who knew Lorraine would quickly realize she was a very witty lady and enjoyed poking fun at people she loved with a joking remark, even up to her last days. Some of her favorite pastimes included music festivals, playing scratch tickets, playing cards, and chatting with family and friends at the kitchen table. She was also a volunteer for the Lady's Auxiliary at the Enfield Legion for many years.

Lorraine will be deeply missed by her son, Bob (Noreen); daughters, Donna Fraser, Shelly O’Neil (Kevin), Terry Lee Brooking (Tony) and Cheryl Corkum (Russell); grandchildren, Steven, Natacha, David, Amanda, Scott, Patrick, Shane, Alex, Karley; 19 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Peggy Gibbon, Diane Horne, Jean Slaunwhite, and Peter Muise.
Predeceased by her husband, Earl Corkum; step-mother, Mary (Neave) Muise; and her brothers, Donald, George, Ernest and John Muise
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Enfield Legion on Sunday, January 21, 2024 from 2-4 p.m.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit and a private burial will be held at a later date.

Les Sprague

Sprague, Les – Les Sprague, age 82, of Lake Echo peacefully passed away, surrounded by family, on Saturday January 13, 2024, in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Born in Amherst, he was a son of Leona (Gould) and William J “Dick” Sprague.

Les is predeceased by his parents; brother, William; and sisters, Marilyn and Roberta.

He is survived by his sister, Alberta; his loving wife of sixty years, Betty (Johnson); sons, Christopher, Jeffery; daughter, Susan; grandchildren, Haley, Kristen, William, and David; great-grandchildren, Jay and Ozzy. Les has many nephews and nieces, all over Canada.

Les had a very successful amateur and professional boxing career as Canadian Junior Welterweight Champion and fought World Champion, Eddie Perkins in 1964. After boxing, Les worked as a barber in Eastern Passage and owned Sprague’s Well Drilling in Lake Echo for several years.

In recent years Les spent quality time with Betty at their home in Lake Echo overlooking Martin Lake and Lake Echo. Les also enjoyed going to his property on Walker Street, East Preston, where he created a fishing pond with hopes of having a relaxing spot for all to enjoy.

The family would like to thank the members of Fire Station 21, Lake Echo; EMS team; Dr. Louis Staple; Gavin Durham RN and all staff at Dartmouth General.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Cynthia Lee Hamilton

Hamilton, Cynthia Lee – Age 62 of Glenmore, passed away unexpectedly at home on January 12, 2024.

Born in Dartmouth, she was a daughter of the late Eric and Phyllis (Glawson) Urquhart.

Cindy enjoyed making others happy by cracking jokes and making inappropriate comments. Her grandchildren brought her great joy. She was the first one to help out with an occasion for a family gathering. Cindy always put others ahead of herself.

She will always be loved and missed by her husband, Blaine; son, Adam (Alicia); their children, Alyssa, Kalee, Zoe; son, Robert (Eric); siblings, Orma, Tammy, Holly, Debbie (Archie), Terrance, Eric (Becky), Jean (Gary); and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by siblings, Rebecca, Norman, James and Christine.

Cremation has taken place.

Elaine (MacDonell) Pugsley

Pugsley (MacDonell), Elaine - Age 94, of Halifax, passed away peacefully with family by her side, on January 10, 2024, after complications from emergency surgery. Born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Port Hood, N.S., she was a daughter of Donald Smyth MacDonell of Judique Intervale and Florence (MacDonald) MacDonell of West Bay Road.

Elaine attended both the Port Hood Convent and Academy and in 1951 she graduated from St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish as a Registered Nurse. She taught at the Children’s Hospital in Halifax for a year after graduation, and in 1953, she received a Diploma of Teaching and Administration from Dalhousie University. Her nursing career was spent at the Halifax Infirmary.

A woman of strong faith, she was actively involved for many years with the Canadian Martyrs Parish/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Halifax.

Elaine lived a life of service both professionally and personally. She was the epitome of Cape Breton hospitality. All visitors were offered home cooked meals and sweets, and she never took no for an answer! This gift was cultivated during her formative years, as her family operated the Oceanside Hotel and Cabins in Port Hood. There they catered to the comfort of both local people and tourists.  Elaine cherished her lifelong attachment to Port Hood, where the Pugsley family still maintains a summer home.

Elaine felt great pride in her Scottish heritage all throughout her life. She was never so proud as when she travelled to Scotland in retirement and was mistaken for a native Scotswoman everywhere she went (until her Canadian accent gave her away).

Her passion was her family near and far, and she inspired all with her unconditional expression of love, generosity, and kindness. She was the best Grandma ever.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Donald Carlyle Pugsley in 2018; and her brothers, Eldred MacDonell, Ronald MacDonell and Stanley MacDonell.

Elaine is survived by her children, Dr. Donald Pugsley (Dr. Kathleen MacPherson), Halifax; Sheila Pugsley (Mark O’Connor), Dartmouth; Moira Pugsley (Richard deBruyn), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Erin (Logan MacLean), Arianne, Lauren, and Jaiden; sister-in-law, Muriel MacDonell and sister-in-law by marriage, Beth (Wolfe) Pugsley.

Special thanks to her caregivers and friends at Jamieson Hall, Parkland at the Lakes.

A Mass of Christian Burial, interment and reception will be held summer 2024 (date to be determined) at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Hood, N.S

Gertrude Marion Helpard

Helpard, Gertrude Marion – It is with great sadness that the family of Gertrude Marion Helpard announce her peaceful passing on January 9, 2024, at the age of 98.

Born in Malden, Mass., USA, she was a daughter of the late Dewey and Jeannette (Smith) Nickerson. Her family moved to Rockville, Yarmouth Co. where she spent her youth before moving to Halifax where she worked as Head Cashier with Dominion grocery until she retired and settled in Stewiacke.

Gertie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all those who were blessed to have her in their lives. She was a longstanding member of the Martha Group with the Stewiacke Baptist Church providing fellowship and prayer to her community.

Gertie will now be reunited with her husband of 63 years, Murray, who we’re certain was waiting for her at the golden gates; along with her sisters, Kay (Heillinen), Joyce (Maybe); brothers, Elmer, Carl, Linburg; and the triplets who passed in infancy.

She is survived by her son, Keith (Pat); grandchildren, Andrea Mason (Chuck), Tara Burke and Damon Helpard; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Cameron, Alex and Courtney Mason, Liam Burke and Jasmine Helpard.

The family invites friends and loved ones to join in celebrating her life at the memorial service to take place on Saturday in Lifepoint Church, Main Street East, Stewiacke, NS, B0N 2J0. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:45 pm with the service starting at 2pm.

Memorial donations may be made to Lifepoint Church in Stewiacke to continue her legacy. She will be dearly missed.

Nella "Marie" Head

Head, Nella “Marie” – It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and friend, Nella “Marie” Head.

Born in Stag Harbour, Fogo Island, NFLD to Joyce and Max Bixby, Marie would love to share stories of growing up with her sisters, Marion and Marjorie.

It was June 19, 1971 when she wed her life partner, Alvin. Son, Jody (Natasha) and daughter, Jennifer (Chris Clark) would soon follow. Marie loved her children more

than her words could ever express, but would still make her best efforts to make sure

you knew it. Stories of grandchildren were always a favourite and she made sure her granddaughters, Rebecca (Jennifer) and Lauren (Jody) knew how much they were loved.

Her great-grandson, Joshua (Rebecca) became a constant source of inspiration as her life’s chapters unfolded.

Marie had a fondness of games, especially scrabble and a love of her facebook community that had become a wealth of friendship and support, especially in her later days. Hers was a life rich with friends and family, her heart a beacon of kindness, and she was a spirit that loved fiercely and fought so hard to stay. Marie will forever be cherished.

Besides her immediate family, she is survived by Marjorie Bixby, Viola (Melv) Lush, Cliff Head, Ken (Beulah) Head, Judy (Wayne) Roswell, and Linda Head.

She was predeceased by her sister, Marion Tough and sister-in-law, Selma Head.

We ask friends and family to join us in a Celebration of Life to honour Marie that will be announced at a later date.

Betty Ann MacPhee

MacPhee, Betty Ann – age 75, of Truro, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2024 in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro.  She was a daughter of the late Roy and Olla (Gilby) Weir of Truro.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Loralei (Darlene) Weir, Alton; Loretta (Robbie) McLellan, Old Barns; and Lorraine MacPhee (Stewiacke East); three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

As family, we would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff of Cedarstone Enhanced Care and especially to the staff of Chapell Court who became family to Betty and treated her with such care and compassion.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

There will be no funeral service and spring interment will take place in Truro Robie Street Cemetery.

Donations in Betty’s memory may be made to Cedarstone Enhanced Care Recreation Department.

Georgena (O'Brien) Tupper

Tupper, Georgena- On January 3, 2024, our mom, Georgena (O’Brien)Tupper said goodbye and joined Kevin and Dad.

Mom was born in 1940 to Leah O’Brien and George MacKenzie. She was the baby and had four older sisters, Edna, Gladys, Etta and Grace; and an older brother, Clarence.

She met Dad, Orland “Orley” Tupper and together they ran their business, Currie’s Taxi from 1960 – 1980. Mom met many lifelong friends while safely delivering them to their destinations. When Dad passed in late 1979, Mom couldn’t run the business without her “mechanic” and mate.

Beginning a new chapter, Mom began working for MacQuarrie’s Pharmasave until she retired in 2010. She began retirement doing the things she loved best – playing cards, bingo, scratching her lotto tickets and heading to the mall on the bus with the gals from Church Street to do a little shopping. Those who knew Mom would say she was hardworking, no-nonsense and kind-hearted.

She is the last surviving member of her family. She follows in the footsteps of her husband, Orley; son, Kevin; grandson, Jason and her sisters and brother.

Left to grieve are her children, George (Kristi), Donna, Alan (Lori), and Susan as well as her grandchildren, Amy, Katy, Patrick, Andy, Tyler and Aaron; as well as six great-grandchildren.

At mom’s request, there will not be a funeral. However, donations in her memory may be made to Wynn Park East Wing in recognition of their excellent care of mom.

Evelyn Blanche Moss

Moss, Evelyn Blanche – It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Evelyn Blanche Moss, age 73 on January 2, 2024.  Evelyn passed away peacefully with family at her side. 

Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Beverly and Blanche (Baker) Henry.

Evelyn worked for many companies throughout her career including Moirs Chocolate Factory, Ben’s Bakery, Stock Transportation and ended her career with Canada Post.  Evelyn was a hard worker, and a loving mother, sister, aunt and friend.

Evelyn will be forever missed by her daughter, Tammy (Chris); son, Trendal (Janice); grandchildren, Justin and Noah; great-grandson, Presley; siblings, Gerald (Donna), Doug (Wendy); brother in-law, George; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Besides her parents, Evelyn was predeceased by sisters, Pearl, June, Patricia; and brothers, Ronnie and Elliott.  

Evelyn would like to thank her niece, Amanda for being a wonderful blessing in caring for her over the past several years, always being there whenever needed and loving her unconditionally.  

Arrangements has been entrusted to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative. No service by request of Evelyn. A small graveside service will take place with immediate family only.
