Gault, Tanya Jennifer

Gault, Tanya Jennifer – Age 43, Upper Musquodoboit, passed away suddenly on July 29, 2015, at home. Born in Middle Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of Joan (Gilbert) Gault and the late Hector Gault. Tanya was a devoted partner and mother, always putting her family first. She enjoyed crafts and being a homemaker.

She will always be loved and missed by her partner of 27 years, Andy MacInnis; son, Bradley; daughter, Lindsay; mother, Joan; siblings, Jackie (Boyde) Stewart, Joe (Connie), Rose (Tim King), Roxy (Stacy) Park, Brent (Connie), Stewart; many nieces, nephews and extended family members. Besides her father, she was predeceased by brother, Roger.

Cremation has taken place. In keeping with the family’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Law, Cynthia Doris "Cindy"

Law, Cynthia Doris "Cindy" – Age 64, Stewiacke, passed away July 25, 2015, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Byard and Margaret (Fisher) Taylor. Cindy enjoyed life and lived life to the fullest. She particularly enjoyed knitting, crafts, reading and being with her friends. Her dog, Toby, was an important part of her family.

Surviving are her children, Randy (Kelly) Frame, Jillian Law; brother, Wade Taylor (Denise Forsythe); sister, Tracy Taylor (Shawn Wallace); grandchildren, Hayden and Harley Frame; several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Cindy’s life will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday in Stewiacke Legion Branch 70, 299 George St. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Bastarache, Linda

Bastarache, Linda – Beloved wife, mother, nanny, sister and friend, Linda Bastarache passed away July 19, 2015 at the age of 57. Linda's kind and selfless nature was an inspiration to others. Her greatest passion in her life was her children and granddaughters. Her loving and gentle spirit will remain with all those who were touched by her life.

Linda will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by husband, Brent; daughter, Shallen (Kevin), granddaughters, Macy and Charlee; son, Colin (Jill), granddaughter, Claire; sisters, Andrea (Emile), and Florence (Terry); and many other friends and family.

Arseneau, Joyce Elnor

Arseneau, Joyce Elnor – Age 75, a lifelong resident of Hilden, passed away on July 17, 2015, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Joyce was the youngest daughter of the late Peter Sanders and Dorothy (Chapman) Sanders-Rother. Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Francis “Frank”; daughters, Darlene Arseneau (Art Kennedy), Millbrook; Janet, Bedford; Susan Eldershaw (Dennis), Hilden; son, Michael (Debbie), Hilden; stepsister, Rose Armitage, Saskatoon; grandchildren, Jeffery, Daniel, Shane (Leana), Tiffany, Presley, Alona, Tracy (Nick), and Jesse; great-grandsons, Jaden, Landen and Oakley; sister, Doreen, Dartmouth; lifelong friend, Phyllis Crowe, Truro. She was predeceased by her brother, Sonny; stepfather, Max Rother; stepsister, Inga; stepbrother, Paul.

Joyce worked as an activity director in various nursing homes, and was the video operator at the Truro Raceway. She was an avid volunteer, starting as a young adult as an Explorer and Cub leader. She had been past president of Kinette Club in Truro; was a member of the Fireside Club in Hilden; was respite provider for Mi’kmaq Children and Family Services; was past president of Truro Figure Skating Club. She had been a member of Ladies Auxiliary for the Hilden Fire Hall and Colchester Hospital, and was past treasurer and a lifetime member of Hilden United Church.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Tuesday, at 1p.m. in Hilden United Church Hall, 1840 Irwin Lake Rd., Hilden, Rev. Ian Harrison officiating. Burial will be in Hilden Cemetery followed by a reception in the church hall. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Hilden Cemetery.

Rector, Erma Ellen Grace

Rector, Erma Ellen Grace – Age 82, Truro, formerly of Pleasant Valley Road, Upper Musquodoboit, passed away July 16, 2015. Born in Dean, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Margaret (Farnell) Brown. Erma is survived by children, Grace Bresson (Danny), John Munroe (Elizabeth), Robert Munroe (Renee); grandchildren, Tyler Bresson, Sheridan Bresson, Derek Munroe, Roberta Read (Jay), Tyler Munroe, Sarah Fisher, Natasha Munroe, Andrew Munroe, Jeremy Carver (Doreen); eight great-grandchildren; nieces, Glenda and Grace. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Rector, long-time companion, Frank Mason; granddaughter, Charmaine Munroe in infancy; brother, Aubrey; sister, Stella Reynolds.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Sunday, 6-8 p.m., in St. James United Church, Upper Musquodoboit. A graveside service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in Elderbank Cemetery, Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. James United Church General Fund.

Dillman, Charles Stanford

Dillman, Charles Stanford – Age 79, Porters Lake, passed away July 10, 2015 at home. Born in Middle Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Earl and Ellen (Bell) Dillman. Charlie loved life, had a great sense of humour, and always had a joke to tell. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, hunting, spending time at his camp, and having friends around. He will always be missed by his four-legged princess, Molly. A life-long truck driver, most of his career was with Imperial Oil. Surviving are his wife, the former Greta Geddes; son, Jody (Sheila); stepchildren, Gerald (Heather) Leslie, Angela (Murray) Giles, Christine (Bruce) Chisling; ten grandchildren. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by brothers, Douglas, Ervin, Murray; sisters, Lillis, Ione.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, 2 p.m., in Hillside Cemetery, Middle Musquodoboit, Rev. Dr. Linda Yates officiating. Memorial donations may be made to The Lung Association Nova Scotia or a local chapter of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Hiltz (Hurshman), E. Jean

Hiltz (Hurshman), E. Jean – Passed away July 7, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 7, 1943, she was a daughter of the late William and Ethel (Soper) Hurshman. Jean was born in Dutch Settlement and spent her life there with the love of her life, her husband and best friend, Willard. Together they raised their children, Lenny (Darlene), Lake Egmont; John (Shawna), Milford; Cindy (William) Pearo, Alder Point, Cape Breton; Jamie (Connie) Dutch Settlement. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren, Angie, Lori, Danielle, Jessica, Amanda, Cory, Clarissa, Jacqueline and Justin; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Bella, Vanessa, Tyler and Damenon. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Ken, Harvey; sister, Kay Card; grandsons, Matthew and Robert.

Jean worked at various jobs, with her last one being as a jail guard for the Enfield RCMP detachment. She was a tremendous community volunteer. She received a 25 year pin from the RCMP for her dedication as a volunteer. She also received the highest award of the Ostomy Halifax Society for her faithful dedication as newsletter editor. She was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by East Hants Municipality.

Visitation will be Thursday, from 7-9 p.m., and funeral service will be Friday at 3 p.m., both in St. George’s Anglican Church, Dutch Settlement, Rev. Canon David Fletcher and Rev. Patty McKenna officiating. Cremation to follow with burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ostomy Halifax Society.

Simard, Jocelyn Leda

Simard, Jocelyn Leda – After a nearly two-year struggle with cancer, Jocelyn died peacefully with her family by her side. Jocelyn spent an active life professionally as a Registered Nurse, working for more than 20 years at Northwood. Nothing frustrated her more during her illness than her inability to care for her residents. Jocelyn loved to give back to her community, volunteering for Beavers, Cubs, Air Cadets and in many ministries in Saint Benedict Parish, her church, including community suppers, youth ministry, catechetics, the Catholic Women’s League, Alpha ministry and any other place where her talents could be used for the glory of God. An ardent and talented singer, she was a member of several choirs in the church and also sang as a cantor. Jocelyn enjoyed nothing more than singing and performing with her family. She was a loving and devoted mother to her three children, but also adopted in spirit all those who needed her special care and guidance. She was always close to her family, spending many summers in Greenfield, at “the cottage”, water skiing on the lake and cooking summer meals.

Jocelyn was married for 39 years and is survived by her loving husband, Marc; her sons, Justin (Ellen) and Guy; daughter, Stephanie Potter (Tim). She was a proud and indulgent Grammie to Samantha, Hannah, Robert, Joseph, Rebecca, James and George. She is also survived by her sister, Anna Albert (Julien) and her nephews, Eric, Joel and Bryant. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Joyce (Strum) Freeman and her brothers, Richard and Deryck.

Thanks to the many caregivers from Northwood Home Care, the Palliative Care Unit in the VG Site, QEII, who added so much to her quality of life over the last two years. She was blessed with the same level of care she had lavished on her own patients.

Funeral service will be held in Saint Benedict Parish on Friday, July 10 at 10:30 a.m., with Father James Mallon officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, July 9 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Saint Joseph Room of Saint Benedict Parish. A reception will be held afterward in Rev. Bernard O’Neill Auditorium. The interment will be in Mount Olivet for family only. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Saint Benedict Building Fund.

Hedden, Ruby Edna

Hedden, Ruby Edna – Age 79, Dartmouth, passed away July 4, 2015, in Dartmouth General Hospital, with her loving husband by her side. Born in Brantford, Ont., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Stella (Douglas) Garlow. Ruby loved the Lord. She had a keen sense of humour and loved to laugh. Her giving nature was displayed to all who knew her.

She loved her family unconditionally and will always be missed by her husband, Morrison “Moe”; children, Valerie (Robert) Vaughan, Sandra (Stephen) Pilon, Richard, Brenda (Jim) Davies, Mike (Darlene Raymakers); 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Orville (Dawn), Raymond, Bill (Gloria). She was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be Thursday, 10-10:45 a.m., with funeral service at 11 a.m., in Wittenburg Baptist Church, Pastor Robert Vaughan officiating. Burial to follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Wittenburg. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.

MacPhee, David Norman

MacPhee, David Norman – Age 65, Upper Rawdon. We are saddened to announce the passing of David MacPhee on July 1, 2015, at home, surrounded by his family. Born in Upper Rawdon, he was a son of the late Owen and Ellen (Weatherhead) MacPhee. David enjoyed any reason for a family gathering. He enjoyed taking drives and stopping for coffee along the way. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he will certainly be missed for his teasing by anyone who knew him.

He will always be loved and missed by his wife, the former Deborah Barr; son, Clinton (Jennifer); daughter, Jodi-Rae (Andrew); grandchildren, Nicholas, Kyle, Makayla, Jillian, Ashley; great-grandson, Austin. He is also survived by brothers, Gary (Pat), Marvin (Alfreda), Danny; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Laurie; nephew, Shane MacPhee; sisters-in-law, Joanne and Wendy. He always missed his best friend, his beloved golden retriever, Max.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside committal service will be held in Upper Rawdon United Church Cemetery on July 11 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Angus R. MacDonald officiating. The family will meet friends for a reception in the Upper Rawdon Community Hall following the burial. Family flowers only. Miller, Mary Lora

Miller, Mary Lora – Age 83, Centre Musquodoboit, passed away July 1, 2015, in Braeside Home for Special Care, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Wittenburg, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Stella (Laidlaw) Taylor. In her earlier years, she had been a Sunday school teacher, C.G.I.T. and Girl Guide leader. Mary had been a member of Riverside United Church where she sang in the choir and was an honorary elder. She was also a member of the Musquodoboit Valley Hospital Auxiliary and Upper Musquodoboit Fellowship Club. Mary was an avid bowler and loved to dance.

Surviving are her children, Gerald (Lois), Joan (Dan) Laffin, Larry (Heather), John (Donna), Dale (Pam); daughter-in-law, Krista; son-in-law, Phillip Kent; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Roderick (Linda), John (Velma); sister, Zeta Sanford; brother-in-law, Kevin McCallum. She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald; daughter, Dianne; son, Robert; brothers, James, Cecil, Donald; sister, Faye McCallum.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday, and funeral service will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, both in Riverside United Church, Elmsvale, Rev. Dr. Linda Yates officiating. Dunlap, Wesley George

Dunlap, Wesley George – Age 75, Stewiacke, passed away Monday morning, June 29, 2015, in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Wesley was born in Newton Mills, on March 4, 1940, to the late Arthur and Evelyn (Wyer) Dunlap. At an early age, Wesley left home to work in the mines in Ontario. He settled in Sudbury where he was employed by Inco for many years.

Surviving are his stepson, Randy (Cathy) Graham; son, Stephen, both of Ontario; daughter, Karen (Tom) Keys, Hilden; grandchildren, Cassandra, Brianna, Erika, Jake, Stephen, Tara, Nicole, Jesse, Shannon, all of Ontario; and Sarah, Hilden; brothers and sisters, Sylvia Pickles, Lawrence (Sharon MacKay), Albert (Dianne), Donnie (Kathleen), Shirley (Bob) Ross, Rosalie (Butch) Frizzell, Betty (Jim) Rector, Faye (Willie) Courtney, Barb (Gordon) Miller, Cecil (Lillian); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Christina, in infancy; brother, Willie; brother-in-law, Harry Pickles; great nephew, Colin Joyce.

Wesley enjoyed woodworking and loved doing the Bluegrass circuit with his friends. He also loved getting together with his brothers and sisters, who supported him throughout his battle with cancer. Wesley will be sadly missed by all.

Visitation will be Thursday, starting at 1 p.m., until funeral service at 2 p.m., both in Springside United Church, Eastville, with Rev. Marilyn MacDonald officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
