Lawrence Arthur “Laurie” Gentles

Gentles, Lawrence Arthur “Laurie” – With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Lawrence “Laurie” Arthur Gentles, age 82, of Halifax, on Thursday, November 29, 2018 in QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Arthur and Laura (Horne) Gentles.

He was a member of the Local 56 Plumbers Union and worked for many years as a Projects Manager for Steen Mechanical Contractors. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and volunteered for St. Vincent de Paul.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Genevieve (MacNeil) Gentles; sons, John (Endu), Blair, and Robert (Zoe Ellen); grandchildren, Myles, Robert, Tyler, Jacquelynn, Anthony, Joshua, Thomas, Marcus and Mya; brothers, Donnie (Eva), Ronnie (Karen), and Jackie (Betty); sisters, Gloria (David) and Paulette (Lowell); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Brian; brother, Leonard; sisters, Florence, Beverley and Betty Lou.

He will be remembered fondly for his love for family and his time at the card table. He was very active in his grandchildren’s lives and loved them dearly as they did him. He will be forever missed by everyone.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral mass on Wednesday, December 5th at 10:30 a.m. with visitation on Tuesday, December 4th from 6-8 p.m., in St. Benedict Parish in St. Joseph’s Room, 45 Radcliffe Dr., Halifax. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or another charity of your choice.

George Thomas Farmer

Farmer, George Thomas – The passing of George Thomas Farmer, age 73 of Stellarton, occurred on November 29, 2018, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, with his family by his side.

He is survived by his wife, Christine (Morrisey) Farmer; sons, George (wife Melanie), Gordon; daughter, Barbara (husband Douglas); grandchildren, Dustin, Bethany, Ethan; brothers, Freeman Gregory, Vernon Gregory, Doug Gregory, Mark Farmer; sister, Sara Allen. He was predeceased by parents, George H. and Kathleen (Anthony) Farmer; brother, Carl.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. There will be no service by request.

Robert Theodore “Bob” Regan

Regan, Robert Theodore “Bob” – Of Wolfville, passed away suddenly on November 29, 2018. He was the eldest son of Frank and Annie (Dennison) Regan of Wolfville.

He is survived by brother, Donald, Berwick; and sister, Anita, Halifax; and nieces, Margaret and Carolyn Graves.

He was a faithful member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and a member of the CAF Reserves in Nova Scotia and Alberta. A dedicated user of the Wolfville Public Library, he was passionate about history; in particular, military history.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. There will be a service and reception in the Wolfville Legion on Saturday, December 8th at 2 p.m. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to your local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Bertha Geraldine Higgins

Higgins, Bertha Geraldine – Age 83 of Halifax, passed away November 27, 2018, in the Palliative Care Unit of the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born in Middle Musquodoboit, she was the eldest child of the late Gerald and Jessie (Burnett) Higgins.

After graduation from Musquodoboit Rural High, she attended Mount Allison and McGill universities. She was a librarian with the Nova Scotia government for over 31 years, serving as Provincial Librarian for several years. She enjoyed travelling, reading and knitting, with family members and charities receiving countless afghans, toques and mittens. Family was most important to her. She was caregiver for her mother for several years and was a very special aunt to her nieces and nephews.

Bertha is survived by her brother, Albert (Ellen), Middle Musquodoboit; sisters, Ruth (George) Nymand, Calgary, Alta.; Verna Higgins, Middle Musquodoboit; Mary Anne (Alvin deceased) Lorette, Truro; Doris (Les) Lyster, Edmonton, Alta.; nephews, Rick (Wanda), Martin (Catherine), Jeff Higgins, Andrew Lyster; nieces, Marsha ( Peter) Koersvelt, Amanda Lorette (Jonathan Beadle), Janet (Craig) Comeau, Joanne Lyster; several grand nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Nellie, in infancy.

Many thanks to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit for their compassion and care, and to the wonderful staff of the Berkeley Gladstone where she had resided for the past three years.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. At Bertha’s request there will be no funeral service. Interment will be in Higginsville Cemetery at a later date. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

Carl Withrow Gilroy

Gilroy, Carl Withrow – Age 96 of Middle Musquodoboit, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2018, in Braeside Home for Special Care. Born in Leamington, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the late John Ernest Coleman and Cynthia Carrie (Douglas) Gilroy. He had an idyllic childhood on the family farm with his identical twin, Cleve, surrounded by their large extended family.

Carl made a living directly from the land; farming and making maple syrup in his youth, lumbering with his brothers, Aubrey and Leonard in a family enterprise called Gilroy Bros. until 1967, then founding his own business as a contractor in the pulp and paper industry. He was well respected and known for his patience, compassion and loyalty. He mentored and financed many employees in beginning their own businesses as a way of “paying it forward,” decades before this notion was given a name. Carl was a very devoted family man and husband, as well as a great friend, and was well liked in business and social circles. In his retirement, he spent time with his wife, children, and grandchildren or working on his woodlands. Carl’s family always felt his loving support and he could be counted upon to run errands, ferry grandchildren here and there, or do anything the family needed doing.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Iona Gwendolyn (Arnold); children, Gregory (Deanna), Carrie (John) Wilson, Bradley; and six grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Violet Elwell, Jeanette Hopper, Hughena Forcey, Helen Smiley and Edith Mitchell; and by brothers, Arnold, Aubrey, Ivan, Leonard and Cleve.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Family service and interment will take place at a later date.  Donations in Carl’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.

Stephen Douglas Keddy

Keddy, Stephen Douglas – Age 54 of Dean, died November 17, 2018. Stephen grew up in Toronto, and it was there he got his training in the sheet metal and welding  trades.

He was very creative and enjoyed making many items from metal. He had high standards and work ethics for himself, and was an extremely dedicated worker, taking great pride in his profession.

He moved to Nova Scotia, which he loved – trips to the ocean, farmers’ fields, fishing, picnics at the lake, going for drives. A humble man, Steve loved his family and was very loyal to his friends.

He is survived by his son, Tyler (Megan) Keddy; grandson, Oliver; sister, Diane (Kirk) Redden; parents, Doug and Jean Keddy; many other close family members and friends, including special friend, Vesta.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 23, in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean, with Student Minister Calvin Burt officiating. Burial will be in Dean Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Sharon Presbyterian Church, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.

Nelson Stewart Dauphinee

Dauphinee, Nelson Stewart – Age 90 of Lantz, passed away November 14, 2018, in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax, where he had been a resident for 12 years. Born in Lower Tantallon, he was a son of the late Harold and Mary (Romans) Dauphinee.

Nelson retired from Nova Scotia Sand and Gravel after 22 years of employment. He had a keen sense of humour and enjoyed hunting. After retiring, he could often be found in the woods picking wildflowers for the ladies in the neighbourhood. He enjoyed being in nature, life in general, and particularly being with his family.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, the former Florence Caddell; children, David, Dartmouth; Gail Fillion (Steve Swinimer), Nine Mile River; Kitty (Blaine) Miller, Crystal (John) Ashley, both of Elmsdale; Twila Dauphinee, Nine Mile River; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; sisters, Edna (Gordon) Deman, Elmsdale; Ethel Deman, Belnan. He was predeceased by granddaughter, Morgan Ashley; sister, Esther Fancy; brothers, Art, Don, Ralph.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. No visitation or funeral service by request. Memorial donations to Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice would be appreciated.

Natalie Dawn Hibbitts

Hibbitts, Natalie Dawn – Age 43, of Shubenacadie, passed away November 13, 2018, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of Robert Hibbitts and the late Maxine (Lively) Hibbitts.

Natalie spent 22 years employed with Dexter Construction in traffic division. She made many friends and was well-respected as a confidante and mentor both at work and home. Natalie was a warm and generous person who gave every part of her being to the people around her and her job. Her kind spirit and loving nature will always be remembered and missed by her loving partner, Donnie Greenough; sisters, Brenda, Bobbi, and Stephanie; nephew, Michael; niece, Lauren; great-nieces, Phoenix and Iris; aunt, Jo Ann (Dexter) Dowell. She was predeceased by her grandmothers; cousin, Joey; and Karen, the Thelma to her Louise.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral service will be Sunday, at 2 p.m., in St. Thomas Anglican Church, Fall River, with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Interment will be at a later date in West Gore Cemetery. Memorial donations to Fundy Veterinarians Ltd., or any organization which helps children would be appreciated.

Scott Stuart Graham

Graham, Scott Stuart – Age 93 of Eastville, passed away November 13, 2018 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Pembroke, he was a son of the late George and Minerva Graham.

Scott was a farmer, logger and millworker for many years. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone. His kind ways will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, the former Rhoda Dickie; sons, Lewis (Francene), Ivan (Deborah); grandchildren, Andrew (Krystal), Evan (Jessie), Matthew (Sarah), Janet (Robert); great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Carter, Cassius, Tristan, Scotia Lynn. He was predeceased by brothers, Walter, Philip; sisters, Marie, Annie.

No visitation by request. Funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Springside United Church, Springside, Marty Clark-Ettinger officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be at a later date in Eastville Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Eastville Cemetery.

James William Swinimer

Swinimer, James William – Age 54, of Dartmouth, passed away November 11, 2018, at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of James Swinimer and the late Joan (Clarke) Swinimer.

James was an avid volunteer for the MS Society and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He was a proud father, and one of his greatest moments was to see both of his sons graduate. James could be seen around town riding his mobility scooter. In August, he drove his scooter from Lunenburg to Halifax, fundraising for MS and Leukemia and Lymphoma.

He leaves behind to mourn his loss, his wife, Tracey (Adams); sons, Jamie and David; brothers, Peter (Alexandra), Dana (Lorrie Conrad); sisters, Jo-Anne (George) Oxtoby, Tanya (Keith Turple); several nieces and nephews. Besides his mother, he was predeceased by his brother, Michael.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral service will be held Friday, November 16th, at 6 p.m., in New Hope Baptist Church, 11 Everette Street, Dartmouth, with Pastor Chris Blinder officiating. Family flowers only. Lloyd Edwin Nauffts

Nauffts, Lloyd Edwin – Age 79 of Truro. It is with deep sadness that Lloyd’s family announces his passing on November 1, 2018, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a son of the late Fred and Pearl Nauffts.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Valerie; daughters, Darlene, Dartmouth, and Joanne (Danny) Wellwood, Lantz; granddaughters, Ashley Wellwood, N.W.T., and Samantha Wellwood, Halifax; brother, Donald (May), Calgary; and sister, Carol (Nelson) Miller, Fall River. He also leaves behind brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Bertha Wiswell, Lake Echo; David and Joan Wiswell, Truro; Gail and Tom Davis, Gays River; Paul Wiswell, Tatamagouche; Mike and Cindy Wiswell, Mount Uniacke; Wayne and Bridget Wiswell, Rawdon; Terry Noiles, Bedford; Tony and Donna Wiswell, New Brunswick; Danny Wiswell, Bedford; numerous nieces and nephews.

Lloyd was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed travelling, camping, relished talking about politics and always enjoyed a good joke. He will be lovingly and forever missed.

The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and doctors who gave all their special care and support.
