Higgins, Bertha Geraldine – Age 83 of Halifax, passed away November 27, 2018, in the Palliative Care Unit of the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born in Middle Musquodoboit, she was the eldest child of the late Gerald and Jessie (Burnett) Higgins.
After graduation from Musquodoboit Rural High, she attended Mount Allison and McGill universities. She was a librarian with the Nova Scotia government for over 31 years, serving as Provincial Librarian for several years. She enjoyed travelling, reading and knitting, with family members and charities receiving countless afghans, toques and mittens. Family was most important to her. She was caregiver for her mother for several years and was a very special aunt to her nieces and nephews.
Bertha is survived by her brother, Albert (Ellen), Middle Musquodoboit; sisters, Ruth (George) Nymand, Calgary, Alta.; Verna Higgins, Middle Musquodoboit; Mary Anne (Alvin deceased) Lorette, Truro; Doris (Les) Lyster, Edmonton, Alta.; nephews, Rick (Wanda), Martin (Catherine), Jeff Higgins, Andrew Lyster; nieces, Marsha ( Peter) Koersvelt, Amanda Lorette (Jonathan Beadle), Janet (Craig) Comeau, Joanne Lyster; several grand nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Nellie, in infancy.
Many thanks to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit for their compassion and care, and to the wonderful staff of the Berkeley Gladstone where she had resided for the past three years.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. At Bertha’s request there will be no funeral service. Interment will be in Higginsville Cemetery at a later date. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
