Allan Joseph Robicheau

Robicheau, Allan Joseph – It is with deep sadness that we, the family of Allan Joseph Robicheau, announce his passing at age 94 on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Allan is survived by the love of his life, Eleanor (Faucher); as well as his children, Sharon (Dennis) Kirker, Lloyd (Sharon) Robicheau, David (Angie) Robicheau, Debbie (Scott) King, Karenanne (Robert) Conrod, Calvin Robicheau, Kerina (Steve) Michaud; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Marion Conrod; brother, Ralph Robicheau (Verna); and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Amos and Marie (Smith) Robicheau; brothers, Kenny and Freddie Robicheau; brother-in-law, Ronnie Conrod; sister-in-law, Rita Robicheau; and grandson, Evan Michaud.

Dad and Mom both grew up in West Chezzetcook. They started their courtship and after four years, they married on September 4, 1954 in Saint Anselm’s Church. In 1957 they started their family and over a number of years, had seven wonderful children plus 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dad worked for Nova Scotia Liquor Commission for 36+ years retiring at the age of 56. The last position he held was Assistant Supervisor at the warehouse in Burnside.

Dad was a family man. He cherished his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always on call if he was needed, which was quite often. Whether to pick up someone from school or take them to an appointment, Grampy was the one who would go. Dad loved the outdoors and nature; especially putting in his garden, fishing, hunting and in later years, taking daily four wheeler trips around the property.

Dad belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council 9093 in West Chezzetcook for many years and also involved with Saint Anselm’s Church Picnics – selling tickets for the Lobster Suppers. Dad was heartbroken by the closure of his beloved Saint Anselm’s Church. Dad loved to play the fiddle that was given to him by his grandmother. He taught himself how to play and got some help from his father who also played.

Dad will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We were truly blessed to have him as long as we did. We all love you and will never forget you. Rest in peace Dad.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to Dartmouth General Hospital, Emergency Department, 4 East and 5 West.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024 in St. John of the Cross Church (formerly St. Genevieve’s Church), East Chezzetcook at 11 a.m. Father Vincent Onyekelu and Deacon Howard Oehmen to officiate. Shelley Ardith Singer

Singer, Shelley – It is with deep sadness, but a profound feeling of peace, that we announce that Shelley Ardith Singer passed away peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on Monday, January 1st, 2024, surrounded by family.

Born in Truro in 1953, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Blanche (Woodworth) Taylor, of Stewiacke.

Shelley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her devoted husband, Irvine, to whom she was married for over 50 years. She was the most loving mother to Andrew (Anna) of Shubenacadie; Nicole (Adam) of Antigonish; and absolutely beloved Grammie to Maddison, Christopher, Matthew, Emma, and Cameron. She is also survived by her brother, Stephen (Anita); and her two “twisted” sisters and lifelong best friends, Vicki Taylor and Shawn Smith; as well as several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, all of whom she was devoted to.

She is predeceased by her brother, Bob (Earline).

Shelley was a kind, gentle, and fun-loving person who was loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She had her priorities in life all figured out – people came first. She loved nothing more than having her grandchildren around her. They were her pride and joy and she would drop everything when they came through the door, plying them with (inevitably burnt) toast, her delicious pies, and everlasting, unconditional, nonjudgmental love. And the feeling was fully reciprocated, with Grammie being their absolute favourite for each of them.

Shelley had the gift of hospitality. She loved hosting family dinners and would prepare delicious meals, always making sure that everyone got their favourite desserts – even if it meant cooking seven different pies. Whenever someone arrived at the house, she made everyone feel welcome and comfortable and always offered a tea as you sat to chat. Many people felt that Shelley was a “second mom” to them over the years with her generous heart and spirit.

She never missed a summer at the cottage on Shortt’s Lake, where countless fun and happy memories were made over the decades with her immediate and extended family. In years past she could often be seen out on the raft in the middle of the night, playing cards and getting up to silly mischief with her sisters and her close friends. Her grandchildren loved adventures with her at the lake, setting sail in the red rowboat, SS Shelley to “The Witches Finger” or to collect water lilies from the cove.

She also loved playing darts and played at the provincial level for many years. If she hadn’t been so good at darts, we would have wondered if she played just to have fun weekly laughs with friends and adventurous weekends away with the ladies. From a family of avid card players, Shelley loved a laugh over a game of cards with family and friends. The laughter and banter over games of Big Bertha and Yahtzee were always matched with snacks and drinks late into the night. She also loved and was always up for board games of any kind, and one of her most characteristic things was sitting at the kitchen table mulling over the big New York crosswords in the paper on a Saturday morning. She always enjoyed attending sporting events, whether it was to watch Irv in their early years together, Andrew throughout his childhood, or the grandkids in more recent years.

Family lived afar over the years and there was a great countdown for the arrival of loved ones for a visit home. Trips to the lake, Peggy’s Cove, and endless visits in her kitchen made her heart full until the next reunion with loved ones. She was at the airport for arrivals and departures, crying her heart out on every encounter.

She loved Christmas and took such pride in decorating her tree, in fact no one could put the lights on the tree with as much fussing and care as Mom. She went above and beyond to make sure everyone was thought of when gifting. Christmas morning was always cheerful and excited chaos, particularly once the grandchildren arrived on the scene. She would often be left with all her gifts still unopened, as she’d been so caught up in the joy of watching others open their presents.

Shelley loved nature. In the summertime she always had flowers in her garden, ate lots of fresh veggies from Irv’s veggie garden, and loved just quietly enjoying birds, sunsets, the beach, the lake, and the river. And she absolutely loved animals of all kinds and generously donated to local animal charities over the years. She adored her family pets and the pets of extended family too.

Shelley worked for most of her adult life at Taylor’s Transfer, Thompson’s, and finally Armour Transport in Truro, where she loved to tease and be teased by “her” drivers. She enjoyed and took pride in her work and considered her colleagues there her second family, as they did her.

By request there will be no service at this time. A private family interment will be held in the Spring of 2024. The family extends gratitude to the palliative care team at CEHHC. Donations may be made to Colchester East Hants Hospice Society or to a charity of your choice. Shelley was such a generous person and would be happy knowing that any worthwhile cause was being supported or that a gesture of kindness was done in her memory.

Rest in peace, Shelley, Mom, Grammie. We miss you so much and you will forever be in our hearts.

Milton Robert Laybolt

Laybolt, Milton Robert – Age 74, of Head of Jeddore, passed away peacefully in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital with his family by his side after a courageous battle against cancer on December 31, 2023.

Milton was born to Robert and Alice (Foley) Laybolt. He was a lifetime member at Station 26 Oyster Pond Volunteer Fire Department with over 30 years of active service and had held the positions of Chief and Deputy Chief for many years. As told, he was the one of the best pump truck operators around and Quality Concrete was lucky to have him.

He always enjoyed a good game of Gotcha and poker on the weekends or going for ATV runs with friends that were more like family. He was known for his cookies and fish cakes that he enjoyed making for others.

Spending time with his grandchildren, Carter, Caelyn, Aynslie and Reid gave him the most enjoyment in life. They would put a smile on his face whenever they were around and they kept him fighting for every extra day.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lorna (Stevens); daughter, Amanda; son, Cory; brothers, Wilson (Donna), Ivan, Earl (Christina); sisters, Catherine Gordon and Bonita (Melvin) Day; along with many nieces and nephews.

Loyde Burton Watson

Watson, Loyde Burton – Following a lengthy battle with cancer, it is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Loyde on December 26, 2023 in his 79th year.

Loyde was raised in the small and close-knit community of West St. Andrews, where he later settled with former spouse, Doris (Woodworth), raising two loving daughters, Lisa (Paul Pickup) and Donna Robertson (James).

He took great pride in his grandchildren, Mitchell Currie (Nicole), Andrew Currie, Jori Moore and Darwin Moore. He was a great-grandfather to Leo Currie and Lylah Moore.

Loyde is survived by and will be deeply missed by his daughters; their spouses; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; his siblings, Marion Rutherford, Eva Hare, Vick (Marjorie), Percy, Bryan (Marie); former sister-in-law, Cathy and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his loving parents, Dorothy and Burton; siblings, Adeline, Harold, Dwight, Lorne, Gerry, Ruby, Sylvia and Dalton (Eileen); and brothers-in-law, Emerson and Cecil.

Loyde wasn’t afraid of hard work, and he took great pride in every project he undertook as a master carpenter throughout his lifetime. They say you must be cut-throat to achieve huge financial success in business; Loyde was anything but. He was a big softie at heart, achieving so much more than what money could buy. He was skilled, kind, and a man of his word, with great character and integrity, gaining well deserved respect and admiration from both his clients and employees.

In his earlier years, Loyde enjoyed gardening, a good round of golf, and as a devout dog lover, always had a canine friend by his side.

Loyde always brought humor and enjoyed a good laugh, but, much like the rest of the family, his true passion was music. He was an avid fiddler and guitar player, and enjoyed singing a few of his favorites now and again. There is no doubt that a lot of polkas, laughter and smiles are happening in heaven right now.

The family extends immense appreciation to the staff at Cedarstone for the expert and compassionate care provided to Loyde in his final days.

At Loyde’s request, cremation has taken place. If desired, donations may be made in his memory to Cedarstone Enhanced Care or your local SPCA.

During this time, Jane began dating a young Dutch immigrant named Henry Boehm. Gloria Ann Pynn

Pynn, Gloria Ann – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our   mother, Gloria Pynn, age 78, on December 9, 2023.

Mom was born in Halifax and moved to West Jeddore at the age of 4, where she and her sister, Chris, were raised by John and Gladys Kent. It was in this family and tight knit community where she learned to love and to serve God. Her church community, no matter where she lived, was her touchstone throughout her life. She is remembered in her church communities for her kindness, her hearty and willing laugh, her freely proffered hugs, and her work ethic. Mom could turn any work session into a good time, whether it was by telling jokes, singing songs or pulling pranks.

Mom craved time in nature and found solace in her walks in Victoria Park and at Kiwanis Pond. Peggy’s Cove and Clam Harbour Beach were also favourites, and she never turned down the chance for a drive. She was an avid supporter of Christian camping, volunteering her time at Camp Pagweak in Pugwash, N.S. and at Camp Wegesegum in Chipman, N.B. There are many stories of Gloria’s antics at camp, where she was always looking for the next opportunity to play a joke on someone. She passed on that love of camping to her children.

Despite, or maybe because of, being from a small community, Mom had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She travelled all over the world, both for pleasure and on mission trips. Kenya always had a special place in her heart, and her greatest wish was to return to start a mission there.

Mom loved her family. She was so very proud of her daughters, Taunya and Anisa. She welcomed her son-in-law, Roger Crowe, into the family with open arms and loved to feed him. Brianna Pynn was her chosen granddaughter, and she took great pleasure in their talks. It was her grandsons, however - Isaac and Seth Crowe - who held the biggest pieces of her heart. There was nothing they could ask of Nana that she would not drop everything to do for them, and there was nothing that brought her more joy than her visits with them. The most heartbreaking time of her dementia was when she ceased to recall who they were.

We are enormously grateful to the staff at Wynn Park Villa who provided care for Mom over the last five years. Dementia is an ugly disease, but she was consistently treated with kindness and compassion, and they allowed her to have dignity to the very end.

A celebration of Gloria’s life will take place in People’s Church, Truro, on Saturday, December 16th, beginning with visitation at 10 a.m. and service to follow at 11 a.m.

We ask that you not send flowers. Those of you who knew Mom know she was not exactly discriminating in giving her money away; having said that, Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM) was particularly close to her heart. You are, therefore, encouraged to make a donation to CBM or literally any charity that is important to you.

He received numerous awards, including The Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal in recognition of 20 years of loyal and meritorious service to public security in Canada from the Governor General of Canada.

A favorite pastime for Donald was watching NASCAR racing and anything cars. Nothing made Donald happier than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are Donald’s wife, Beverly (nee Clarke); sons, Shawn (Amanda) and Jason (Nicole); granddaughters, Martina (Cody) and Kaylee; grandsons, Tristan (Amelia), Blake, Brody and Wyatt; brother, Owen (Linda); sisters-in-law, Etta and Grace Fletcher.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Robert and Laurie; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Delma Wile.

A special thanks to the Colchester East Hants Dialysis Unit, VON and the Palliative Care teams for their exceptional care and compassion for Donald and family.

Cremation has taken place.

A funeral service followed by a fellowship will be held December 16, 2023 from 1 – 3 p.m. in Gore District Fire Hall, West Gore, Hants County, Nova Scotia.

Kenneth Wayne Deal

Deal, Kenneth Wayne –It is with incredible sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Kenneth Wayne Deal.

Kenneth, sixty-nine years old of Newton Mills, was born to Douglas Deal and Irma Deal (Fraser) of Upper Musquodoboit. He was predeceased by both his parents and his oldest brother, Frank. We share this very difficult time of loss with his living siblings - older brother, Gordon; little sister, Evelyn (Leslie); Ken’s many nieces and nephews and all extended family.

Ken is remembered by the community as being kind, thoughtful, generous and helpful to all, and for his incredible talents in woodworking, drafting, construction, drawing and design. He loved to read and had a passion for fixing and building; he loved classic cars, waterfalling, taking nature photos, being outdoors and connecting with others.

Ken adored his wife of 47 years, Eva (Dickey), and was extremely proud of his two daughters, Kelly (Nathan MacLeod) and Laura, and all of his beautiful grandchildren - Ollie, Sarah, Ana and Niviaq. His wife will forever be the greatest love of his life, and he hers.

The layers of love Ken had for his family and friends visibly shined in his eyes and in his smile. He was a strong and steady man who practiced patience and understanding that came from his very core. He made us all feel welcomed, at ease, safe, valued, supported and cared for.

On this day, if we (his family) could try to measure the impact his life has had on the people around us, we can see it in the continual words of care, gifts of small comforts, and actions of love that have come to us as we have only begun to grieve this profound loss. For these things you’ve shown us, we are incredibly grateful and we are all the more sure of how special a man Ken was.

In recent retirement, Kenneth had taken a newfound interest in ATV trail riding and had enjoyed recreational camping and nature for years. The family asks that any donation you may wish to offer be made to the Lemon Hill Sports Association in Dean - a group involved in enhancing the local community through sport, trail preservation, music and song.

As his family, we cannot begin to describe the immensity of what Ken meant to us. We can only feel eternally thankful for the years he worked so hard to give us loving memories doing family things like cross country skiing, ice skating, travel and camping, holiday traditions and so many other days we now cherish.

Please join us in celebrating Kenneth’s beautiful life at his and Eva’s home at 415 Highway 336, Newton Mills on Thursday, December 7th, from 1-4pm, and feel welcomed to share your own stories of Ken. His eventual wish is to be buried at Higginsville Cemetery where he will rest, there, with his mother and father, his late and dear nephew Andrew and other members of the Deal and Fraser families.
