Robert "Bob" Ramsey

Ramsey, Robert “Bob” – Age 79, of West Saint Andrews, unexpectedly passed away peacefully in his home on December 3, 2023 with his family near his side.

Born in West Saint Andrews, he was a son of late Norma (Hamilton) and Russell “Bud” Ramsey.

Bob worked for Coastal Fuels as a truck driver for 30 plus years. If he wasn’t on the road, he was at the fire department where he served as a volunteer firefighter. He spent all of his spare time back at the camp with Anne and the boys, getting winter wood ready and drinking rum. Later on, Bob made many road trips watching Justin play hockey. Bob always had a passion for horses. Later in his life, he got to continue to share this passion with his grandsons, Travis and Ryan, and great-granddaughter, Abbie, leaving special memories and lessons behind.

The door to his garage was a revolving one. Everyone was welcome and when you popped in, he’d be in his chair watching the ball game or a sappy western. He was so many peoples constant and he will be dearly missed.

Bob was predeceased by the love of his life, Anne (Metlin); sister, Velma Hines.

He is survived by his son, Chad (Monique); twin daughters, Sonia (Ricky), Sherry; sisters, Elva Hill and Leah Ramsey; grandchildren, Whitney, Justin (Carley), Travis, Ryan (Emily); and his beloved, great grandchildren, Abbie, Halle, Annie; step great-grandchildren, Bradley, Emma and Cohen; and many of his bonus grandchildren, and loved ones.

A Celebration of life will be held in West Saint Andrews Community Hall on Sunday, December 17, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Charles Hilton Boyce

Boyce, Charles Hilton – Aged 94, of Bible Hill passed away peacefully on November 16, 2023.

A son of the late Charles Hilton and Harriet Boyce, Charlie was born in Truro. One of ten children, he grew up between Truro, Onslow, and Bible Hill. He met his late wife, Della, at the bowling alley, through lifetime friends, Art and Ruth Weatherby. They were married in September 1949. Together they were active members of St. David’s United Church for many years. During the summer they could be found at Mattatall Lake, spending time at their cottage with family and friends. He could always be caught making Della laugh with silly jokes, sayings, or stories from “the good ole days”. He enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing, going on moose hunting trips to Newfoundland and even went on an unforgettable multi-day trail ride in Banff when he was 80. Charlie was an easy-going sports enthusiast who enjoyed golfing, regardless of the day’s results. A proud moment for him was a hole in one at Mountain Golf Course at the age of 70.

Charlie was involved in the auto parts industry for many years working for Commercial Equipment and Halifax Ignition until opening a UAP store with business partner, Ken McDonald, in 1971. He was involved in UAP associate stores in Truro, Parrsboro and New Glasgow over the years. He remained with the business when UAP transitioned to NAPA. Although he officially retired in the 90s he kept going in to work, almost daily, for many years to follow. He could always be found doing the year-end inventory counts with meticulous attention to detail well into his 80s.

Charlie was a very proud member of the Bible Hill Fire Brigade for nearly 70 years, serving many positions – Captain of Police, 2nd Deputy Chief, Secretary and Fire Chief. After becoming an honorary member in 1987 he stayed involved with the Brigade, attending many events and meetings. He always made sure to head over on Fridays to catch up on the weeks’ events.

Another big part of Charlie’s life was bowling. He began bowling at 13 when his father ran the YMCA bowling alley and continued to bowl for over 80 years. He bowled in many leagues and tournaments, and it truly was a passion of his. He was still bowling in his 94th year but would pass on warming up as, “I’ve had enough practice over the years”.

Anyone who knows Charlie would agree that he was a social butterfly. He genuinely enjoyed meeting new people and would stay in touch with people he met on his travels for many years after. Charlie strived to leave a positive impact on anyone and everyone he met. Being involved in his community, through the Fire Brigade, Bowling, and St. David’s United Church, was extremely important to him. He was known for being a genuine man who always had a smile on his face with a kind word to say. Charlie had a way with words and would write poems and rhymes for birthdays, anniversaries, and many other occasions. It was always a special moment when he would stand up with a piece of paper and start reading something he had written.

Charlie is survived by his children, Gwendolyn, David (Karen), and Kevin (Lesley); grandchildren, Riley (Faye), Murray (Ayla), Siobhan, Jenny (Joel), Sarah, Lynsey (Brandon), and Jaime (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Brixton, Emma, Charlie, Calum, Bohden, Kacey, Chloe, Katie, Ellie and Braver; siblings, Flo (Vince) Weatherbee, Ralph (Audrey), Syd (Irene) and George (Linda) Boyce; in addition to many nieces and nephews.

Charlie was predeceased by his parents; wife, Della; siblings, Doug (Eileen), Ron (Margaret), Bill (Lillian) Boyce, Helen (Charles) MacNeil, and Grace (Ronnie) Moore.

Special thanks to daughter in-law, Lesley; family friend, Raymond Lindsay; niece, Michelle Takacs; and the Doctors and Nurses at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their incredible care.

A Celebration of Life will be held in July 2024.

At being a friend, father, and grandfather he really was the best. An amazing man with a kind, pure heart, he is now at rest.

Egon Pedersen

Pedersen, Egon – Age 67, of Bible Hill, passed away on November 17, 2023 at his home with the love of his family surrounding him.

Egon is survived by his wife, Carlee (Davis); daughter, Megon Helfrich (Anthony); grandchildren, Allison and Linden; fur-baby, August, Central Onslow; and son, Ryan Pedersen (Caroline); and fur-baby, Rue, Brackley, PEI. Egon is also survived by his sister, Lone and brothers, Svend and Steven and their families in BC and Alberta.  Egon will be missed by many family in a very broad sense of the word.

Family includes all that have shared our home and our lives, our connections in NS, NB, PEI, Alberta, family in Denmark, and the students from around the world that were hosted in our home and Egon became their Canadian “dad”.

Egon was born in Frederikssund, Denmark, and first came to Canada when he was 6 months old.  He came by ship and that probably started his initial love of the water; that plus his Viking heritage! Egon later became a Canadian citizen in 1982, “a $10.00 Canadian,” as he put it.  He was very proud of his Alberta roots and since 1987, his Maritime home.

From age 6, Egon developed a long-lasting friendship with Dave Matheson, one that continued throughout his life. He attended a Calgary football game with Dave on a trip west in July of this year.

Egon spent his early years in Alberta and British Columbia and left school to work on several farms to help his family. Egon attended SAIT in Calgary and earned his Red Seal as a Bricklayer. He worked as a bricklayer for over 40 years, sometimes working for others and for a time had his own company, Pedersen Masonry. This work took him to various locations in the US, Canada and Japan. No matter where he was, he stayed connected to his family with letters and postcards; no Facetime then!

Egon was known for many things: being a great dad, role model, a Morfar to Allie and Linden, a tour guide, builder and repairer of anything and everything and fulfilling the dreams of Carlee with anything that was old. Carlee would say, “oh, I love that,” and after some discussion(!), he always made it a reality – from redoing our “old” home in Bible Hill and our “old” school in Malagash, plus all the “old” treasures that were found everywhere, including in the ditch!

If you ever visited with us, Egon would have had you seeing the beautiful parts of our province through his eyes. He always had a plan and wanted an early start on those travel days with family and friends. Gale and Rico Squizzato were always up for any plans, whatever they were, planned or unplanned, from gopher museums, shopping at Value Village, the search for double-salted licorice, fishing for caplin, taking part in a Newfoundland shed party, quadding with Rico and other crazy adventures whenever we were together, including our surprise trip west this summer. Egon loved to BBQ and his burgers were always a hit. He was willing to experiment with his cooking skills and was extremely proud of the cookies he made and the bunny pancakes at Easter. He was quick to comment on how clean he could keep the kitchen when he cooked compared to Carlee.

Egon and Carlee came to NS to live in 1987. What started as a holiday ended up being a move to the East! Egon became a Maritimer at heart.

In recent years he so enjoyed “our happy place” in Malagash (our old school), the wildlife (bear watching), walks on the beach searching for sea glass, the drives for ice cream and to Pugwash for cinnamon buns, sitting on the deck having a coffee in the early morning and a Keiths, Skaal (cheers in Danish), later in the day when it was time to get the bonfire going and the marshmallows out. So many thanks to our Malagash family for all their help and support.

Egon had been a member of the Bible Hill Fire Dept. He was always quick to support his children, Megon and Ryan, throughout their school years and beyond with whatever they were involved in, everything from buying Girl Guide cookies to Volkswagens! His children were his great achievement and you could see his pride when he spoke of them and their accomplishments!

Egon also enjoyed another job, working with Carlee (unofficially!) in her role with the Nova Scotia International Student Program. He agreed to help with anything needed (even before he knew he had agreed!). He was the “Canadian dad” to many over the years, drove kids to appointments, airport greeter, chaperone for excursions and hotel quarantines during COVID, he set up for many events, and was the tour guide. He was always interested in the background and lives of all the students.

Our family is very appreciative of the support we have had during Egon’s short but difficult illness these last two months – the emails, phone calls, prayers, drop in visits and all the offers to do anything. We understand how important healthcare is to us all. Our family has felt looked after, loved and supported by the “health care system” that often receives so much negative publicity. So many thanks to 8.3 at the Halifax Infirmary and specialists at the Victoria General. You tried, we tried and Egon tried but it was not to be. In lieu of flowers please feel free to donate to health care in some way, through your local hospitals, the VON, Red Cross or other health care organizations.

Egon’s final wishes were “no funeral.” Instead, he wanted to welcome any that are able to “fill” our home. He always loved having visitors!  Please feel free to drop by our home to share your memories and enjoy a laugh. No tears allowed!

Celebration for Egon – Thursday, Nov. 23, 2023 from 2 – 6 p.m. in 9 Wright Ave., Bible Hill.

Carl Edgar Annand

Annand, Carl Edgar – It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Carl Edgar Annand, aged 76, of Middle Musquodoboit.

Carl died peacefully in his sleep November 12, 2023. He will be forever missed by his loving wife, Lynn; his daughters, Belinda, Shanda (Troy); his precious grandchildren, Casia (Leslie), Tristan, Kaitlyn, Avery (Taylor), Madison (Gabe), Kale, Ty; great-granddaughter, Paisley; and cherished fur baby, Mindy. Carl is survived by his sister, Sharon (Vic); and special sister-in-law, Karen Annand.

Carl was a son of the late Edgar and Roberta (Taylor) Annand of Middle Musquodoboit. He was also predeceased by siblings, Keith, Arlene, and Howard.

Carl was extremely fortunate to have so many wonderful friends. The family would like to extend a particular thank you to Craig and to Greg, for all of their time and support provided to Dad over the past years.

In his younger years, Carl loved to play sports and he made many wonderful memories with friends playing baseball and hockey. He loved racing cars and got himself into some trouble over the years, but he loved to tell the stories, or at least the ones he was willing to share!

Carl worked as a mechanic for many years before finding his true passion, long haul trucking. He was involved in the trucking industry for over 50 years, allowing him to see many parts of the world and meet many new people, make memories, and gather stories that he loved to share with anyone who would listen.

His love for trucking was no match for his love for music. In the late seventies, Carl and a group of friends formed bands called the Weeds of Eden, and the Cavaliers. Their music was enjoyed by many at local dances for several years. Carl had many great memories as a drummer with both bands, but later found a love for the Blues, and in the mid-nineties, the harmonica became his instrument of choice. He spent many hours teaching himself to play, as his father did years before him. He loved every opportunity he had to share his talent and, although he always found fault with any performance he gave, his family and friends always loved to be entertained by him.

Above all, Carl was a family man. He loved nothing more than spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Holidays were the best. From Easter scavenger hunts to birthday parties, summer pool parties to Christmas games and potlucks, he was always there with a smile on his face, ready for a good laugh. His favorite movie was Chevy Chase’s Christmas Vacation. Every year, we would gather as a family to watch, and every year, he would be laughing and reciting the lines before the scene even happened. As we gather to watch this year, we will raise a glass to a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, knowing he’s looking down on us, laughing away at Clark Griswold’s antics.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Musquodoboit Valley Bicentennial Theatre on Saturday, December 2, from 2-6 p.m.

Donations may be made in Carl’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Patricia Helen (McGuire) Stewart

Stewart (McGuire), Patricia Helen – On November 8, 2023, many hearts were broken with the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Patricia Helen (McGuire) Stewart at the age of 88 years. She passed away at home surrounded by her loving family.

Pat was born and raised in New Glasgow. She went on to complete her RN diploma in Ontario then enjoyed a 20-year career on the maternity ward in Colchester Hospital.

Pat was the mother of eight children in ten years. To them, “Mommy was the strongest woman we ever met”. She realized the value of education and was adamant that all of her children graduate from high school. She loved her family unconditionally, and enjoyed celebrating their accomplishments. In the early 70s she could be seen in the rink with seven cheerleaders pounding on the glass encouraging young Dan.

A testament to the love for their mother, Pat’s phone rang off the hook daily as her children called her (at their allotted time slot) to check in and let her know their news of the day.

Pat loved playing cards with her daughters and best friend, Gwen. Always ready for a match, she won her final two games of auction 45s on November 5th.

She spent the last eleven summers on Shortts Lake allowing us all to be kids again. She enjoyed washer toss, volleyball and sitting on the deck watching sailboats and sunsets with family and friends.

Pat was a faithful parishioner of the Roman Catholic Church.

She will be sadly missed by her children, Danny (Lexie), Kathy (Wayne), Sherry (Roger), Patty (John), Kelly (Mark) Alexa (Kerri), Jacqueline (Brent), Terry; and her loving brother, Laddie. She was fondly known to her 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren as “Nan”.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Floyd Douglas Stewart; siblings, Leonard, Jack, Francis, Edward, Mary and June; parents, Frank and Amelia McGuire.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Pelley for her compassion and kindness over the years.

Brian Hugh Patterson

Patterson, Brian Hugh – It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Brian Patterson, age 69, of Truro in Vimy Court Enhanced Care, Bible Hill on November 3, 2023. Surrounded by family, his passage was peaceful.

Born in Middleton to the late Leslie and Dorothy (Baldwin) Patterson, Brian grew up in Margaretsville, NS on the Bay of Fundy where, as a teenager, he spent many hours on the water, fishing with ‘the ole guys’. It truly was his passion as he reminisced of bygone days. He always claimed he knew exactly ‘where the fish were hiding’.

Brian proudly served with the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy) for 27 years, spending much of his time aboard several of the east coast ships as well as posts to various bases, including a stint with CFS Alert.  Upon retirement from the regular force, he worked as a Reservist with the Cadets in CFNA Whitehorse and CFS Debert.

Retirement was peaceful for Brian and he certainly enjoyed his multiple gardens, tinkering with items in his ‘he-shed’ and relaxing with his boys, Dennis and Dukes.

Brian, known fondly in Truro as ‘Sailor’, loved anything that involved space and science fiction. A die-hard Trekkie, Captain Kirk and Stephen Hawking were his mentors and if he found a willing ear, he would try to educate you on the theories of time dilation and black holes. The idea of passage to another dimension fascinated him.

Brian will be profoundly missed by his wife, Heather (Cormier), Truro; daughters, Marla (Randy) Burke, Murray Siding; Dana (Adam White) Patterson, Bible Hill; son, Morgan (Katie) Patterson, Edmonton; grandchildren, Samantha, Kaydence and Kane; mother-in-law, Marcella Cormier, Summerside; brother-in-law, Ken (Diane) Cormier, Charlottetown; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brothers, Earl (Mary Anne) Patterson, Brandon, Manitoba; Randy Patterson, Middleton; and sister, Elaine (Frank) Little, Greenwood.

Besides his parents, Brian was predeceased by sister, Anne Patterson and father-in-law, Paul Cormier.

We’d like to thank the staff at Vimy Court for their care of Brian during his short stay and especially for the comfort and compassion they provided him and the family during his final days.

Per Brian’s request, there will not be a visitation or service. There will be a family scattering ceremony at a later date. If so desired, donations in Brian’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society.

There’s no such thing as the unknown-only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood.  Beam me up, Scotty!”
