Hawes, Cecilia Winnifred - of Tangier, Winnie passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, November 26, 2023 in High-Crest Nursing Home in Sherbrooke, at the age of 88 years.
She was the beloved wife of the late Walter; adored mother of John Hawes, Greg Hawes (Valerie), Peter Hawes (Angela), Ann Cuthbert (John), Kelly MacKenzie (Chris), Millie Walsh (Victor), Walter Hawes (Shirley), Mary Rutledge (Mike), and Francis Hawes (Julie). Cherished Nanny of Tylor, Chasity, Jennifer, Cyril, Hilary, Trevor, Morgan, Jonah, Kelsey, Devon, Abby, Noah, and ten great-grandchildren. She was the loving sister of Laura Holmes (the late Mack), of Stellarton; loving sister-in-law, aunt and friend to many.
She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Violet (Nichols) Basford, of James River.
Born in James River, Winnie spent her teenage years living with her Aunt Lida and Uncle Harold in Afton. She was a teacher when she moved to Tangier where she met her husband. After raising nine children, Winnie returned to the workplace as a Personal Care Worker at Duncan MacMillan Nursing Home, Sheet Harbour. After retiring, she could often be found selling fruits and vegetables with Walter from their van. An avid churchgoer, Winnie supported her parish throughout her life,
Visitation will be held on Friday, 6 – 8 p.m., with prayers at 7 p.m. in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Sheet Harbour. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m., also in St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Martin’s Cemetery, Tangier, followed by a reception in Tangier Fire Hall.
A very special thank you to the wonderful staff at High-Crest Nursing Home. The staff went above and beyond in their daily support of our mother and her family.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Peter’s Cemetery Fund in care of St. John of the Cross Parish, 723 East Chezzetcook Road, East Chezzetcook, NS B0J 3L0, to aid in the upkeep of St. Martin’s Cemetery.
