Jo Ann Marjorie Burrell

Burrell, Jo Ann Marjorie – aged 66, peacefully passed away in her sleep on February 1, 2024, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born and raised in the North End of Halifax, she and her husband, Leonard, decided to move across the bridge making Cole Harbour their home and raise their family. After their children had grown, Jo Ann went back to work eventually finding joy in retail jewellery sales.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Leonard; her children, Nicholas (Andrea) and Ashley Fougere (Adam); and her cherished granddaughters, Kaylee, Sophie, and Emma. Jo Ann is also survived by her sister, Linda Poirier (Jamie); brother, Stephen Poirier; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Josephine (Cosgrove) Poirier.

Jo Ann took immense pride in her home and family, with a particular devotion to her three granddaughters who held a special place in her heart. She would spoil them whenever they visited and always wanted them to have fun at Nanny's house creating lasting memories. Jo Ann's favourite pastime was entertaining family, friends, and loved ones. She filled her home with happiness and laughter and was always the hostess with the mostest! She took joy in adorning her home with beautiful decorations for all seasons and holidays.

Jo Ann always looked forward to going on vacation and enjoyed visiting many countries. Of all the places she visited, she would say her favourite place was Lake Louise, Alberta. Jo Ann loved spending time outdoors on her deck, surrounded by the beautiful garden cared for by Lenny, where she loved to showcase her flowers and collection of souvenirs.

“I love you, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck…and DIP!”

The family expresses special thanks to the Palliative Care staff at the Victoria General Hospital, especially Dr. Nadine Hewitt, for her kindness and compassion. Gratitude is also extended to Lionel and Sharon Burrell and niece, Jayme Sabarots for their unwavering love and support.

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held in the summer, Jo Ann's favourite season. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations to be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
