George William "Bill" Perigo

Perigo, George William “Bill” - Age 83 of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away on November 6, 2024 after a brief stay in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Bill proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After his military career, he channeled his strong work ethic into building a successful cabinet-making business from the ground up. Known for his integrity and dedication, Bill was a true craftsman and a man of his word. A lover of the great outdoors, after his retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with friends at his camp. In his later years, he found peace in his lakeside home, caring for his yard and enjoying the tranquility of nature.

Those who knew Bill best would say he could be a bit set in his ways, with a warmth and humor beneath his sometimes no-nonsense exterior. His loyalty ran deep, and beneath that stern exterior was a man who cared deeply for his family.

Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Betty; his sons, Derrick (Krista) and Richard (Gina); and his grandchildren, Ryan, Daniel, and Jessica. He also leaves behind a niece, Audra, and nephew, Stewart.

Predeceased by his parents, George and Flora, and his sister, Cindy, Bill’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will take place at a later date.

Bill’s memory will endure in the hearts of those who loved him and in the legacy he built with his hands and his steadfast spirit.

Agnes Patricia (MacDonald) LeCoure

LeCoure (MacDonald), Agnes Patricia - Agnes passed peacefully in her sleep in the early morning on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in her family home.

Born in 1945 in Chatham, New Brunswick, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Josephine.

Agnes is survived by her husband, Clyde; daughter, Diana; son, Jason (Shona); brothers, Gerald (Brenda), Paul, David (Patricia), Dale (Marilyn); and sisters, Roberta MacKinley and Theresa. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved sister, Anne-Marie and brother, Robert.

Agnes was trained and worked as a registered nurse up to the 1980s when she transitioned to medical administration, working in the Nova Scotia Cancer Center for 23 years. Family was always Agnes's focus, and she loved and was beloved by her children, her husband and her large extended family of brothers, sisters, nieces & nephews. Agnes will be missed dearly by all who knew her for her kindness, compassion and loving nature.

Agnes left Chatham when she married Clyde as his military career resulted in a posting to Germany and then eventually to Nova Scotia where they made their home and raised their children. Despite moving away, Agnes maintained a strong connection to the Miramichi region and travelled there regularly to visit family and attend the quadrennial Hiller reunions.

In more active years, Agnes whooped it up as a line dancer with her sister and her son's future wife, even earning a championship in a contest at Parlee Beach back in the 90s. Agnes also enjoyed baking, going on walks, Friday night Pass the Ace, and weekend campfires. Most of all, she loved spending time with her friends and family.

In her later years, the game of cribbage became a passion for Agnes, and she would compete mercilessly against anyone who would dare to peg against her. She learned most of what she knew about computers and the internet so she could play online and never run out of opponents (and to brag about being a Cribbage Grand Master!)

While Agnes battled cancer for more than two decades, she was a happy and joyous person who meant everything to her family and had a great and full life. We love her, we miss her and will always remember her.

We want to thank the doctors and nurses at the QEII Cancer Centre, and the CCAs and nurses at VON, with special appreciation to her VON palliative care team.

A gathering in her memory will be held in her family home on Saturday, Nov 9th from 12 pm to 4 pm.  Bring your crib board, a pack of cards, and your favourite memories to share.

Lorraine "Rainy" Marie Fredericks

Fredericks, Lorraine Marie “Rainy” - of Conrod Settlement, died peacefully Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the age of 81 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital with family by her side.

Born in Halifax, raised in East Chezzetcook, she was the eldest daughter of the late Earl and Evelyn Pettipas.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Wayne; daughters, Paula Crawford (Philip), Dawn Forrest (Sheldon); son, Dwayne (Jessica); grandchildren, Kyle (Sarah), Jocelyn (Nina), Ashley (Jesse), Devin, Tyler, Hailey, Sophia and Jacob; and great-grandchildren, Hannah, Ava, Carter and Ross. She is also survived by her sister, Maxine Duchesne (Michael); brothers-in-law, Ray Fredericks, Harvey Fredericks (Debbie), Robbie Fredericks and Charles Manthorne; as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her mother and father-in-law, Alicia and Arthur Fredericks and many other family members who she loved dearly.

Mom began her married life working as a sales associate at Jacobson's Department Store, first on Portland Street and then in Mic Mac Mall, Dartmouth.  Priding herself at making the smallest details matter in her working career, she also continued to make every detail matter in her next chapter of life of becoming a full-time homemaker and stay at home mom.

Mom enjoyed entertaining Friday and Saturday night card games, where she would promptly cheat at any opportunity that presented itself then laugh when she got caught; but mom most especially enjoyed Christmas and Easter. From decorating to trimming the tree, wrapping presents and making fruitcakes to Easter when she would make her famous hot cross buns and plan easter egg hunts with an occasional trick up her sleeve.  Mom was a thrifty homemaker that provided a comfortable home where great meals and wonderful home baked goods, jams, jellies and pickles were part of growing up.  Her love of baking was handed down through her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Mom never had any great wants in life, content in the smaller things like camping in Keji where the whole family has made many cherished memories.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday, November 10, 2024, from 1-3 p.m., in Chezzetcook and District Lions Community Centre, 89 East Chezzetcook Road, Head of Chezzetcook, NS B0J 1N0. A private family burial is planned for a later date.

Adele Evans

Evans, Adele - Age 74, died unexpectedly in the early morning of October 15, 2024 at home in Halifax, with her husband Aidan nearby.

Adele was born in the old Halifax Infirmary, the second of ultimately ten children of the late Ralph Frederick Manuge and [Mary] Claire Manuge. People's birthdays were important to Adele, as recipients of "singing telegrams" and sometimes birthday cakes can attest.

Adele was not one to do things by halves. In 2000, having survived the Y2K crisis, she wanted to have an all day birthday party underway the very moment she was 50. So invitations said the party would start at 5:27 a.m. and indeed, on the day, there were friends ringing the doorbell in the predawn twilight.

From stories she told me of her early life, Adele seems to have been strong willed and firm in her opinions from the beginning. Once, annoyed at some parental action, she stormed out of home in Dartmouth and headed on foot along Highway 7 to West Petpeswick (about 50 kilometers) where her Nanny lived. Fortunately, she was picked up her uncle Greg who was driving home along the same route. Some of Adele's happiest and most influential childhood memories were of the summer times living with Nanny O'Leary and another uncle, Father Gerald, a Eudist priest.

Adele grew up mostly in Dartmouth but because of her father's RCN postings also spent time in Quebec and Annapolis Royal. After high school she attended Dalhousie University, enjoying living in residence and theater department activities, but withdrew after one semester because of depression which plagued her most of her life.

The next years were spent in a variety of jobs among which were MTT telephone operator (much later she still knew all the area codes which then matched real areas) and working in the media library at UNB.

Then in 1976 came an opportunity to move London, England, where she found a job at Harrods department store when it was owned by the House of Fraser, long before its present troubles.

After three years Adele returned to Canada and settled in another London (Ontario) to attend the University of Western Ontario. She graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Geography having included Computer Science courses along the way.

With her new degree, Adele was hired by Dalhousie University's Academic Computing Services and was tasked with setting up a computer lab on the Carleton campus. While the job was satisfying, she really wanted to be a system administrator, so in 1987 when a position opened in that group she applied and was successful. There she worked until 2002. Those years did not pass uneventfully.

On February 16, 1990, Adele and Aidan were married, just six weeks after Adele had asked him if he would and he had replied "maybe". It was a whirlwind of wedding preparation built on a two-year foundation of long walks, winter and summer visits to a variety of Nova Scotia beaches, and canoeing on West Lake in Mount Uniacke listening for baby beavers in a lodge.

In addition to her technical skills, Adele enjoyed cooking (our kitchen is overflowing with cookbooks). I was a very limited cook, but as we cooked together from the beginning of our relationship (starting with banana fritters I believe) she has upgraded my capability greatly. Speaking of books, Adele was an avid mystery reader and has several "complete works" collections by favourite authors that she re-reads regularly. Adele made sure we always had a Kliban cat calendar to go along with our real cats, April (1990-2013) and Abigail (2003-2022) who both would only sleep on Adele's lap, never mine. Every year until COVID, we would have an "at home" on Boxing Day, preceded by some times frantic vacuuming, preparation of cakes and a plethora of side dishes. We often were not ready when the first visitors arrived, but they took this in stride and stepped in to help. Adele was also an inveterate catalogue shopper despite not infrequent frustrations by poor customer service (offset by instances of excellence).

Adele suffered from depression most of her life. She responded to medications with a possible side effect of weight gain by gaining weight. Starting about 2012 she began to feel the effects of deconditioning due to age and lack of exercise. She progressed from cane to walker to a power wheelchair that could be folded and put in the car, so we were still able on occasion to go for day trips. An annual event, which we were able to accomplish this year although really too late in the season, was a tour down Highway 103 to look at lupins growing in the median.

On Valentine's Day, 2023 Adele had a fall, broke her right ankle, cracked the left, and spent ten stressful and unhappy weeks in hospital. Then this year, on August 23, she was admitted for treatment of an infected pressure sore on her right foot. On October 5 she was happy to be back in her own home.

Adele was predeceased by her parents and sister, Penelope Carruthers "Penny". She is survived by her husband, Aidan; sisters, Diane Nolet (Tonnie), Chris (Kim), and Annemarie; and brothers, Pat (Claudette), Peter, Jamie, Anthony "Tony Manuge'', and Dennis (Tracy).

Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 19, in Saint Agnes Catholic Church (corner of Chebucto and Mumford) followed by reception and (inclement weather not interfering) burial in Saint Philip Neri Cemetery, West Petpeswick.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.

Mabel Lillian Nellie McCulloch

McCulloch, Mabel Lillian Nellie - It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on October 12, 2024 after a brief stay in QEII Infirmary Site at the age of 87.

Born in Centre Burlington, she was a daughter of Harold and Lillian (Dodge) Card and sister to June, Edgar and little Stephen (who died in infancy). She grew up in the ancestral home built to be close to the water, with no electricity and minimal indoor plumbing. She loved school and gladly walked the 2 miles each way over uninhabited gravel roads to attend. Having advanced quickly through the grades she found herself at the Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro. Shortly after, still in her teen years, she was teaching in Hants Border where she shared a 2-room school with her, soon to become, lifetime friend, June Tracy-West. Two years later, she and Harding were married and she embarked on the next adventure as devoted wife and mother of seven children. In 1969 on Christmas eve, the entire family moved to Elderbank which became home for the next 53 years.

In Elderbank, in addition to raising her family, she did substitute teaching, was deeply involved with the United Church serving on numerous committees and, also, ran the Elderbank Post Office as the Post Mistress for nearly thirty years. In 2021, after suffering a broken hip complicated by the covid pandemic took up residency at Melville Gardens in Halifax. There, in residential care, our mother forged countless friendships while receiving the very best of care and affection from a loving staff. Mom loved the world and cared for everything in it. She saw goodness in everyone and frankly in everything. (Her closet might contain three new sweaters but she would still be wearing an old one until the last bit of goodness was out of it!) She made close friendships where ever she went, with none greater in her last years than her friendship with her dear friend, Mickey. Mom’s beautiful smile and forgiving nature brought light to every room she entered.

She is predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Harding. She is survived by daughter, Cynthia Parker (Jeff); sons, Byron (Roberta), Barry, Mark (Marilyn), Michael (Chrissie), Dennis (Patricia), Scott (Melinda); brother, Edgar (Johanne) and sister, June; as well as many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service followed by a reception will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Andrews United Church, Elderbank.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the amazing team at Melville Gardens who made our mother’s final years special ones. Donations in honour of Mabel may be made to the Lower Musquodoboit Pastoral Charge c/o 6686 Highway 357, Middle Musquodoboit, NS B0N 1X0 to which Mabel was devoted.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.

Stephen James Keddy

It is with great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Stephen James Keddy, age 62, of Upper Stewiacke.

Steve was caring, humble and kind. He was larger than life, creative, a unique individual who was a Jack-of-all-trades and never missed the opportunity to entertain. But more than anything we loved his big heart, which shone through in everything that he did. He was our proud patriarch and loved nothing more than get-togethers, where he was surrounded by his large and extended family. Steve moved to his parents property in Meadowvale, where he started a family farm, which he has expanded over the years. From there he branched into carpentry, where examples of his artistry can be seen throughout the community and beyond. In 2011, he was honoured to have been named ‘Woodlot Owner of the Year’ for his forestry management practices. He was always a motorcycle enthusiast, which led to many adventures. Steve was proud to be a long time member of the Upper Stewiacke Volunteer Fire Department, where he instilled passion in the future generations of firefighters, through his juniors program. In the last decade he enthusiastically embraced the Masonic Journey that he was traveling through. Steve’s level of commitment and involvement in the lodge could never be doubted.

Steve is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann White; his children, Jeremiah (Erin), Jacob (Andrea), Carrie (Roddy) and Cassie (Darcy); stepdaughters, Emma (Jeremy), Lily (Sean), Desiree (Joey), Samantha (Mitchell); 22 grandchildren; and his siblings, Margaret (Monty), Charlie (Doris) and Doug (Nancy) along with many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Helen (Bent) Keddy; his brothers Robert and Gordon and sister Marion.

His funeral service will be held in Upper Stewiacke Fire Hall on Tuesday, October 1st at 3:00pm, with reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, Steve would wish for you to instead spend quality time with your family.

Her passion and skills came from Nannie Newcombe whom she loved and adored and where she spent most of her childhood years growing up. Sheila was known for her love of reading and also found solace in the pages of non-fiction novels that she would buy at the weekend yard sales that she enjoyed attending. In her later years, Sheila and her husband became proud members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 161, Gaetz Brook.

Lawrence William Leavitt

Leavitt, Lawrence William - Age 65, Bible Hill. Many prayers rose from many hearts for Larry on September 21, 2024 but his work here was done, and we had to let him go. He lived life the best he knew, simply and with ease. His presence is greatly missed, but he’s forever in the hearts of those of us who had the privilege to know him. “Wherever a beautiful soul has been, memories are left behind for us”. Larry was a heck of a guy with a sunny disposition, kind heart, caring nature, and he was one of the least judgmental people we knew. At get-togethers, he'd sit quietly by laughing at other’s jokes and sometimes he’d doze off if it got too loud or crazy. He no longer needs to deal with any health issues or take time off from work for surgery, so he’d be happy about that.

Larry met Joanne online 25 years ago, and they married 22 years ago (less 7 days). And with unconditional love, they began their life together in Bible Hill. He fit splendidly into the family and was part of the Larry, Terry and Gary crew (sadly, James came up short in the rhyming). Everyone soon learned of his life-long passion for the Montreal Canadiens and his joy in collecting their memorabilia. He was a super fan who remained forever hopeful and optimistic about their chances of winning.

Joanne and Larry shared the usual ups and downs of married life and side by side experienced untold happy escapades. She initially upgraded his style some, but in the grand scheme of things, Larry took his fashion cues from no one. He liked his Tim Hortons coffee and a nice drink of Captain Morgan gold rum with diet coke and lemon, and when the weather warmed, out came the sandals. With a competitive spirit, he played many rounds of golf before embarking on countless adventures at the Horseman’s Club with his darts and washer toss. And, for some odd reason, he’d a unique flair for winning turkeys and stuff! He was a diligent and conscientious worker with Kohler Windows in Debert and this year had celebrated his 25-year milestone with them.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Truro Horsemen’s Club on Sunday, October 6th from 2-6 p.m. to celebrate his life and share your memories of him with family. Survived by his wife, Joanne; daughters, Jennifer (Shawn), Fredericton; Sara (Chris) and granddaughter, Scarlett, Edmonton; sister, Rhonda Maddix (Gerald), Lakeville, N.B.; and special mention to Aunt Margaret (David), St. Stephen. He is also survived by sisters-in-law and husbands, Bonnie & James Halliday, Dartmouth; Marilyn & Gary Cunningham, Halifax; Frances & Tony Senior, West Yorkshire, UK; brother-in-law and life-partner, Terry & Linda Wamboldt, Pleasant Valley; and their families. Larry was predeceased by his mother, Barbara Dumoulin; brother, Charles Leavitt; and mother-in-law, Helen Wamboldt.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s name may be made to SPCA Colchester or to help a kid play hockey, donate to their rink, or go out and buy the neighbors’ kid a stick, some skates or a helmet.

“Guess what, Babe? What? I love you! I love you too!!” Love you forever and always, your wife, Joanne xoxo
