Jane (DeKam) Boehm

Boehm (DeKam), Jane – of Truro, passed away December 11, 2023.

Born in Sanborn, Iowa, Jane spent her early years in Edgerton, MN.

Leaving behind their rural roots, the family later relocated to Holland, MI to access services for Jane’s little sister, Nancy, born with Down’s Syndrome.

Growing up fifth in a family of 12 children, Jane was the de facto caregiver to her

younger siblings, who recall her nurturing ways. After graduation, Jane attended college and started work at a local hospital. During this time, Jane began dating a young Dutch immigrant named Henry Boehm. They fell in love, married and started a life together, raising six children, living in Michigan, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Jane was a gifted

caregiver and teacher, and she gravitated toward helping others: working with the

elderly and as a teacher’s aid. A loving mom and granny, Jane was attentive, resourceful and skilled. She sewed clothes for the whole family, was a talented baker and cook, and had a way of making every one feel valued. She never backed down from an argument. That stubborn streak helped her persevere through hard ship, including the loss of her son

Mark in 1995, her beloved Henry in 2018, and her declining health in recent years. A woman of great faith, Jane embraced life fully but was not afraid of death. Mourning her loss are her children, Stephen, Elizabeth (Gerald), David (Miyuki), Rachel (Peter), and

Thomas (Chikako); her grandchildren, Charles, Ian, Emily, Mannfred, Asuka, Tomoya, Erin, Marissa, Annalies, and Andrew; and great-grandchildren, Elijah, Ruth, Ethan, Nathan, Elliot, Gemma, and Ella.

Funeral: Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m., John Calvin Christian Reformed Church, Truro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to World Vision Canada.

Gloria Ann Pynn

Pynn, Gloria Ann – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our   mother, Gloria Pynn, age 78, on December 9, 2023.

Mom was born in Halifax and moved to West Jeddore at the age of 4, where she and her sister, Chris, were raised by John and Gladys Kent. It was in this family and tight knit community where she learned to love and to serve God. Her church community, no matter where she lived, was her touchstone throughout her life. She is remembered in her church communities for her kindness, her hearty and willing laugh, her freely proffered hugs, and her work ethic. Mom could turn any work session into a good time, whether it was by telling jokes, singing songs or pulling pranks.

Mom craved time in nature and found solace in her walks in Victoria Park and at Kiwanis Pond. Peggy’s Cove and Clam Harbour Beach were also favourites, and she never turned down the chance for a drive. She was an avid supporter of Christian camping, volunteering her time at Camp Pagweak in Pugwash, N.S. and at Camp Wegesegum in Chipman, N.B. There are many stories of Gloria’s antics at camp, where she was always looking for the next opportunity to play a joke on someone. She passed on that love of camping to her children.

Despite, or maybe because of, being from a small community, Mom had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She travelled all over the world, both for pleasure and on mission trips. Kenya always had a special place in her heart, and her greatest wish was to return to start a mission there.

Mom loved her family. She was so very proud of her daughters, Taunya and Anisa. She welcomed her son-in-law, Roger Crowe, into the family with open arms and loved to feed him. Brianna Pynn was her chosen granddaughter, and she took great pleasure in their talks. It was her grandsons, however - Isaac and Seth Crowe - who held the biggest pieces of her heart. There was nothing they could ask of Nana that she would not drop everything to do for them, and there was nothing that brought her more joy than her visits with them. The most heartbreaking time of her dementia was when she ceased to recall who they were.

We are enormously grateful to the staff at Wynn Park Villa who provided care for Mom over the last five years. Dementia is an ugly disease, but she was consistently treated with kindness and compassion, and they allowed her to have dignity to the very end.

A celebration of Gloria’s life will take place in People’s Church, Truro, on Saturday, December 16th, beginning with visitation at 10 a.m. and service to follow at 11 a.m.

We ask that you not send flowers. Those of you who knew Mom know she was not exactly discriminating in giving her money away; having said that, Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM) was particularly close to her heart. You are, therefore, encouraged to make a donation to CBM or literally any charity that is important to you.

Kenneth Wayne Deal

Deal, Kenneth Wayne –It is with incredible sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Kenneth Wayne Deal.

Kenneth, sixty-nine years old of Newton Mills, was born to Douglas Deal and Irma Deal (Fraser) of Upper Musquodoboit. He was predeceased by both his parents and his oldest brother, Frank. We share this very difficult time of loss with his living siblings - older brother, Gordon; little sister, Evelyn (Leslie); Ken’s many nieces and nephews and all extended family.

Ken is remembered by the community as being kind, thoughtful, generous and helpful to all, and for his incredible talents in woodworking, drafting, construction, drawing and design. He loved to read and had a passion for fixing and building; he loved classic cars, waterfalling, taking nature photos, being outdoors and connecting with others.

Ken adored his wife of 47 years, Eva (Dickey), and was extremely proud of his two daughters, Kelly (Nathan MacLeod) and Laura, and all of his beautiful grandchildren - Ollie, Sarah, Ana and Niviaq. His wife will forever be the greatest love of his life, and he hers.

The layers of love Ken had for his family and friends visibly shined in his eyes and in his smile. He was a strong and steady man who practiced patience and understanding that came from his very core. He made us all feel welcomed, at ease, safe, valued, supported and cared for.

On this day, if we (his family) could try to measure the impact his life has had on the people around us, we can see it in the continual words of care, gifts of small comforts, and actions of love that have come to us as we have only begun to grieve this profound loss. For these things you’ve shown us, we are incredibly grateful and we are all the more sure of how special a man Ken was.

In recent retirement, Kenneth had taken a newfound interest in ATV trail riding and had enjoyed recreational camping and nature for years. The family asks that any donation you may wish to offer be made to the Lemon Hill Sports Association in Dean - a group involved in enhancing the local community through sport, trail preservation, music and song.

As his family, we cannot begin to describe the immensity of what Ken meant to us. We can only feel eternally thankful for the years he worked so hard to give us loving memories doing family things like cross country skiing, ice skating, travel and camping, holiday traditions and so many other days we now cherish.

Please join us in celebrating Kenneth’s beautiful life at his and Eva’s home at 415 Highway 336, Newton Mills on Thursday, December 7th, from 1-4pm, and feel welcomed to share your own stories of Ken. His eventual wish is to be buried at Higginsville Cemetery where he will rest, there, with his mother and father, his late and dear nephew Andrew and other members of the Deal and Fraser families.

Charles Hilton Boyce

Boyce, Charles Hilton – Aged 94, of Bible Hill passed away peacefully on November 16, 2023.

A son of the late Charles Hilton and Harriet Boyce, Charlie was born in Truro. One of ten children, he grew up between Truro, Onslow, and Bible Hill. He met his late wife, Della, at the bowling alley, through lifetime friends, Art and Ruth Weatherby. They were married in September 1949. Together they were active members of St. David’s United Church for many years. During the summer they could be found at Mattatall Lake, spending time at their cottage with family and friends. He could always be caught making Della laugh with silly jokes, sayings, or stories from “the good ole days”. He enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing, going on moose hunting trips to Newfoundland and even went on an unforgettable multi-day trail ride in Banff when he was 80. Charlie was an easy-going sports enthusiast who enjoyed golfing, regardless of the day’s results. A proud moment for him was a hole in one at Mountain Golf Course at the age of 70.

Charlie was involved in the auto parts industry for many years working for Commercial Equipment and Halifax Ignition until opening a UAP store with business partner, Ken McDonald, in 1971. He was involved in UAP associate stores in Truro, Parrsboro and New Glasgow over the years. He remained with the business when UAP transitioned to NAPA. Although he officially retired in the 90s he kept going in to work, almost daily, for many years to follow. He could always be found doing the year-end inventory counts with meticulous attention to detail well into his 80s.

Charlie was a very proud member of the Bible Hill Fire Brigade for nearly 70 years, serving many positions – Captain of Police, 2nd Deputy Chief, Secretary and Fire Chief. After becoming an honorary member in 1987 he stayed involved with the Brigade, attending many events and meetings. He always made sure to head over on Fridays to catch up on the weeks’ events.

Another big part of Charlie’s life was bowling. He began bowling at 13 when his father ran the YMCA bowling alley and continued to bowl for over 80 years. He bowled in many leagues and tournaments, and it truly was a passion of his. He was still bowling in his 94th year but would pass on warming up as, “I’ve had enough practice over the years”.

Anyone who knows Charlie would agree that he was a social butterfly. He genuinely enjoyed meeting new people and would stay in touch with people he met on his travels for many years after. Charlie strived to leave a positive impact on anyone and everyone he met. Being involved in his community, through the Fire Brigade, Bowling, and St. David’s United Church, was extremely important to him. He was known for being a genuine man who always had a smile on his face with a kind word to say. Charlie had a way with words and would write poems and rhymes for birthdays, anniversaries, and many other occasions. It was always a special moment when he would stand up with a piece of paper and start reading something he had written.

Egon Pedersen

Pedersen, Egon – Age 67, of Bible Hill, passed away on November 17, 2023 at his home with the love of his family surrounding him.

Egon is survived by his wife, Carlee (Davis); daughter, Megon Helfrich (Anthony); grandchildren, Allison and Linden; fur-baby, August, Central Onslow; and son, Ryan Pedersen (Caroline); and fur-baby, Rue, Brackley, PEI. Egon is also survived by his sister, Lone and brothers, Svend and Steven and their families in BC and Alberta.  Egon will be missed by many family in a very broad sense of the word.

Family includes all that have shared our home and our lives, our connections in NS, NB, PEI, Alberta, family in Denmark, and the students from around the world that were hosted in our home and Egon became their Canadian “dad”.

Egon was born in Frederikssund, Denmark, and first came to Canada when he was 6 months old.  He came by ship and that probably started his initial love of the water; that plus his Viking heritage! Egon later became a Canadian citizen in 1982, “a $10.00 Canadian,” as he put it.  He was very proud of his Alberta roots and since 1987, his Maritime home.

From age 6, Egon developed a long-lasting friendship with Dave Matheson, one that continued throughout his life. He attended a Calgary football game with Dave on a trip west in July of this year.

Egon spent his early years in Alberta and British Columbia and left school to work on several farms to help his family. Egon attended SAIT in Calgary and earned his Red Seal as a Bricklayer. He worked as a bricklayer for over 40 years, sometimes working for others and for a time had his own company, Pedersen Masonry. This work took him to various locations in the US, Canada and Japan. No matter where he was, he stayed connected to his family with letters and postcards; no Facetime then!

Egon was known for many things: being a great dad, role model, a Morfar to Allie and Linden, a tour guide, builder and repairer of anything and everything and fulfilling the dreams of Carlee with anything that was old. Carlee would say, “oh, I love that,” and after some discussion(!), he always made it a reality – from redoing our “old” home in Bible Hill and our “old” school in Malagash, plus all the “old” treasures that were found everywhere, including in the ditch!

If you ever visited with us, Egon would have had you seeing the beautiful parts of our province through his eyes. He always had a plan and wanted an early start on those travel days with family and friends. Gale and Rico Squizzato were always up for any plans, whatever they were, planned or unplanned, from gopher museums, shopping at Value Village, the search for double-salted licorice, fishing for caplin, taking part in a Newfoundland shed party, quadding with Rico and other crazy adventures whenever we were together, including our surprise trip west this summer. Egon loved to BBQ and his burgers were always a hit. He was willing to experiment with his cooking skills and was extremely proud of the cookies he made and the bunny pancakes at Easter. He was quick to comment on how clean he could keep the kitchen when he cooked compared to Carlee.

Egon and Carlee came to NS to live in 1987. What started as a holiday ended up being a move to the East! Egon became a Maritimer at heart.

In recent years he so enjoyed “our happy place” in Malagash (our old school), the wildlife (bear watching), walks on the beach searching for sea glass, the drives for ice cream and to Pugwash for cinnamon buns, sitting on the deck having a coffee in the early morning and a Keiths, Skaal (cheers in Danish), later in the day when it was time to get the bonfire going and the marshmallows out. So many thanks to our Malagash family for all their help and support.

Egon had been a member of the Bible Hill Fire Dept. He was always quick to support his children, Megon and Ryan, throughout their school years and beyond with whatever they were involved in, everything from buying Girl Guide cookies to Volkswagens! His children were his great achievement and you could see his pride when he spoke of them and their accomplishments!

Egon also enjoyed another job, working with Carlee (unofficially!) in her role with the Nova Scotia International Student Program. He agreed to help with anything needed (even before he knew he had agreed!). He was the “Canadian dad” to many over the years, drove kids to appointments, airport greeter, chaperone for excursions and hotel quarantines during COVID, he set up for many events, and was the tour guide. He was always interested in the background and lives of all the students.

Our family is very appreciative of the support we have had during Egon’s short but difficult illness these last two months – the emails, phone calls, prayers, drop in visits and all the offers to do anything. We understand how important healthcare is to us all. Our family has felt looked after, loved and supported by the “health care system” that often receives so much negative publicity. So many thanks to 8.3 at the Halifax Infirmary and specialists at the Victoria General. You tried, we tried and Egon tried but it was not to be. In lieu of flowers please feel free to donate to health care in some way, through your local hospitals, the VON, Red Cross or other health care organizations.

Egon’s final wishes were “no funeral.” Instead, he wanted to welcome any that are able to “fill” our home. He always loved having visitors!  Please feel free to drop by our home to share your memories and enjoy a laugh. No tears allowed!

Celebration for Egon – Thursday, Nov. 23, 2023 from 2 – 6 p.m. in 9 Wright Ave., Bible Hill.
