Lawrence William Leavitt

Leavitt, Lawrence William - Age 65, Bible Hill. Many prayers rose from many hearts for Larry on September 21, 2024 but his work here was done, and we had to let him go. He lived life the best he knew, simply and with ease. His presence is greatly missed, but he’s forever in the hearts of those of us who had the privilege to know him. “Wherever a beautiful soul has been, memories are left behind for us”. Larry was a heck of a guy with a sunny disposition, kind heart, caring nature, and he was one of the least judgmental people we knew. At get-togethers, he'd sit quietly by laughing at other’s jokes and sometimes he’d doze off if it got too loud or crazy. He no longer needs to deal with any health issues or take time off from work for surgery, so he’d be happy about that.

Larry met Joanne online 25 years ago, and they married 22 years ago (less 7 days). And with unconditional love, they began their life together in Bible Hill. He fit splendidly into the family and was part of the Larry, Terry and Gary crew (sadly, James came up short in the rhyming). Everyone soon learned of his life-long passion for the Montreal Canadiens and his joy in collecting their memorabilia. He was a super fan who remained forever hopeful and optimistic about their chances of winning.

Joanne and Larry shared the usual ups and downs of married life and side by side experienced untold happy escapades. She initially upgraded his style some, but in the grand scheme of things, Larry took his fashion cues from no one. He liked his Tim Hortons coffee and a nice drink of Captain Morgan gold rum with diet coke and lemon, and when the weather warmed, out came the sandals. With a competitive spirit, he played many rounds of golf before embarking on countless adventures at the Horseman’s Club with his darts and washer toss. And, for some odd reason, he’d a unique flair for winning turkeys and stuff! He was a diligent and conscientious worker with Kohler Windows in Debert and this year had celebrated his 25-year milestone with them.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Truro Horsemen’s Club on Sunday, October 6th from 2-6 p.m. to celebrate his life and share your memories of him with family. Survived by his wife, Joanne; daughters, Jennifer (Shawn), Fredericton; Sara (Chris) and granddaughter, Scarlett, Edmonton; sister, Rhonda Maddix (Gerald), Lakeville, N.B.; and special mention to Aunt Margaret (David), St. Stephen. He is also survived by sisters-in-law and husbands, Bonnie & James Halliday, Dartmouth; Marilyn & Gary Cunningham, Halifax; Frances & Tony Senior, West Yorkshire, UK; brother-in-law and life-partner, Terry & Linda Wamboldt, Pleasant Valley; and their families. Larry was predeceased by his mother, Barbara Dumoulin; brother, Charles Leavitt; and mother-in-law, Helen Wamboldt.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s name may be made to SPCA Colchester or to help a kid play hockey, donate to their rink, or go out and buy the neighbors’ kid a stick, some skates or a helmet.

“Guess what, Babe? What? I love you! I love you too!!” Love you forever and always, your wife, Joanne xoxo

She will not be forgotten by her lifelong friend, Cindy, the two of who were inseparable toddlers, school mates, and late-night gabbers. Who misses her the most? Her sister, Janet, and brother-in-law, Gary, and many cousins, with whom she enjoyed spending time. She was left to mourn the passing of her parents, Victor and Ruby (Redmond) with whom she spent many treasured years being their companion, in addition to being one of their well-loved daughters.

Kathleen "Katie" Helen (Graham) Doyle

Doyle (Graham), Kathleen “Katie” Helen – Age 39, passed away September 8, 2024 at home with her family around her following a two-year battle with cancer.

Katie grew up in Burnside and family and community were a big part of her upbringing. In a family predominately boys - the ladies were treated like Queens, Katie was no exception.

After high school, Katie went on to become an LPN and began working for Nova Scotia Health for the next 18 years. She has impacted so many lives in her care during that time. Katie did not just create friendships but insta-families, biological and chosen alike. She had her NS family and PEI family – but her work family was equally as important. Special thanks to Amanda Crowe, a previous coworker of hers for all her support in the last few weeks.

Katie had many roles in her short time here but her most cherished was that of being a mother. She was active in their lives and loved every minute. This past year, she fully embraced her “hockey mom” role and volunteered as a team manager for the boys team. She and her loving husband of 12 years raised three beautiful children who were the apples of her eye.

She will always be loved and missed by her loving husband, Michael; children, Carly, Will and Casey; parents, Logan and Rhonda Graham; mother-in-law, Jean Doyle; brothers, David (Kristeena) and Danny (Vicki); sisters-in-law, Pam Doyle, Shelley (Kalvin), Cindy (Matt); brother-in-law, Shannon (Nikki); many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Clyde David Smith

Smith, Clyde David – It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Clyde David Smith at age 78, of Lantz on September 7, 2024 in QEII Hospital, VG Site with family present.

Clyde was born in Fort St. John, BC but made his way east where he would eventually meet his future wife.

Clyde is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie and took great pride in raising their family together. As well, Smitty is survived by his children, Paula (David) Horne, Cheryl (Shane) Schneiderman and David (Melissa) Smith. Papa adored his grandchildren and any opportunity to share in their lives. Beau, Ella, Cody, Lucas, Thomas and Maggie “Muggins” as he loved to refer to the youngest of the crew, brought endless hours of joy and love to his life. Clyde is also survived by his brother, Donnie (Donna) Smith; sisters, Linda Hanley, Nancy (Ken) Smith, Lynda (Darrel) Magerl; many brothers and sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Richard and David Smith; and sister, Laura Hines.

Smitty was always looking for an adventure or a reason to ‘run the roads’. So many fond memories of family camping weekends, the cross-country road trip to Red Deer in ’93, celebrating his children’s athletic pursuits, pontooning on Grand Lake, playing cards and crib and any form of competition that raised the stakes! Most of all though, Smitty knew the value in the smallest of life’s gifts, from eating a good meal out with Marie, conversations with his family about work, their lives and world events, countless family gatherings, and Sunday dinners. He loved his leisurely annual road trip through the beautiful Annapolis Valley. A favorite destination for him and time to share his own fond memories of his childhood spent in Karsdale.

Smitty was an athlete in his earlier years, spending time playing fastball with the Brookfield Elks and pioneering the whip pitch locally. Anyone who knew Smitty’s pitching finesse knew he threw a mean change-up!

Dad was also a self-made man, running his own successful masonry company for most of his life. He was so proud of the work his companies did for many commercial projects throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and in particular, the development of the East Hants Sportsplex. Upon retirement, he found his way to driving a school bus and loved his school kids and their daily stories.

Dad came from humble beginnings and helped to instill in his family that working hard, taking pride in a job well done and being a loving and generous person are great standards to live by. We love him dearly and will miss him greatly.

We would like to thank the paramedics, Lantz Firefighters and the many doctors and nurses in the ICU Units in Colchester East Hants Health Centre and VG Site for the care and comfort provided during Dad’s short illness. As well thanks to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.

Memorial donations may be made to St. George’s Cemetery Fund, 1089 Highway 277, Dutch Settlement, Nova Scotia B2S 2J6.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 13 at 11 a.m. in St. George’s Church, Dutch Settlement.

Daniel "Sonny" Guy Baker

Baker, Daniel “Sonny” Guy - It is with great sadness the family of Daniel “Sonny” Guy Baker announce his sudden passing in the early hours of September 4, 2024.

Sonny was predeceased by his loving parents, Verdun and Verda Baker; sister, Donna; brother, Ralph; and his dear friend, Wilfred “Woffy” Cross.

Sonny is survived by his loving sister and very best friend, Dale “Sissy” Baker, Ostrea Lake; sister, Charlene (Allan) Campbell, Alberta; niece, Michelle (Danny) Baker-Johnston, Musquodoboit Harbour; nephew, Ralph Baker, Alberta; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Sonny was a gentleman, a gentle soul and a teddy bear of a human being. He loved easily and deeply – seeing the very best in people, observing and appreciating wildlife, delighting in the wonder of children and puppy dogs. Sonny’s appetite for what was simple and good endeared him to all who knew him. Although he couldn’t cook, he loved good food and always made a point of thanking the cook. In many ways Sonny was equally strong and gentle, naïve and wise. Seeing the world through a lens of kindness allowed Sonny to enjoy the simple things in life, live everyday with a grateful heart, and know the world in a kinder and gentler manner than most. We hope that all who knew him can picture his absolute delight as he greeted those who went before him, with that big smile that lite up his entire being. In the words he uttered so very often himself as he departed “Love ya brother”.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Ostrea Lake Fire Hall on Saturday, September 28, 2 to 4 p.m.  A private family burial will be held at a later date.

For over 30 years Randy had been employed with Mosher’s Limestone as a loader operator. His grandchildren were his world. He was very kind, very opinionated and loved to argue. One of his proudest moments was to be able to witness his daughter’s wedding on Friday night.

Arlen "Bub" Lee Kennedy

Kennedy, Arlen “Bub” Lee - It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Arlen "Bub" Lee Kennedy on September 1, 2024, in Halifax Infirmary with his adoring family by his side.

Born in 1954, his life, spanning nearly 70 years, was a testament to love for his family, and dedication to the Stewiacke Valley. Born to David and Carmitta, Arlen grew up on the family farm, and had many cherished memories from those years with his siblings, cousins, and friends.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Amie; loving step-son, Sam; and his cherished brother, Stephen. Despite these profound losses, along with the many struggles that he faced with his health, Arlen continued to be his warm, approachable, and humorous self right until the end.

Arlen leaves behind with broken hearts his wife, Nancy (MacDonald); his children, Bobby, Kelly (Marc), Ryan; and granddaughters whom he treasured, Sophie and Renée; step-children, Amy (Matt), Eric (Amanda), Josh (McKenzie); grandchildren, Emma, Bailey, Alyvia, Lily, Taylor, Bella, Eric, Lucas, and Brooks, who all held a truly special place in his heart. A caring brother, Arlen is survived by Don (Kathy), Larry (Lynn), Ardith (Grant), Janet (Gary), and Maxine (Frank). His extended family includes many nieces and nephews, along with countless friends who were like family to him. Arlen also shared a wonderful friendship with the mother of his children, Debbie. He greatly enjoyed family gatherings where we could all be together to share loud laughs, good food, and make memories.

Arlen spent the majority of his career in lumber sales, where his charisma and work ethic shone brightly. The connections he made through his career are too vast to name, proven too many times by the fact that no matter where you went Arlen always found someone that he knew and had to stop to chat “just for a few minutes” (which inevitably turned into MUCH longer!)

Arlen was an incredibly proud member of the Upper Stewiacke Volunteer Fire Brigade, where he served his community with pride and deep commitment. He served as treasurer for many years, and you could often find him tending bar at a dance or function, directing traffic during fire or medical calls, and always running the hoop toss booth at the annual Fireman’s picnic.

The Stewiacke Valley held a special place in Arlen's heart. It was there that he found peace and joy, in the shade of the whip handle trees that he loved. The valley was rooted as deeply in his heart, as he was to the valley itself.

Arlen's funeral service will be held in Upper Stewiacke Fire Hall, Thursday, September 5, 2024 with visitation from 1:00-2:45 p.m. followed by a service at 3:00 p.m.

Arlen will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to his community, his infectious zest for life, and his incredible resolve to keep going no matter what obstacles he faced. He didn’t let anything stop him, and you would never hear him complain. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He recently shared with us a quote that really seemed to resonate with him “He lies in the valley he loved” - and now you will rest there for eternity.

You are deeply loved and will never be forgotten.

Glenda Bernice (Belmore) Burrows

Burrows (Belmore), Glenda Bernice - With heartbreaking sadness, we announce the passing of Glenda Bernice (Belmore) Burrows of Wellington, NS on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

Glenda was born in a small house on the shore of Burkner Lake in Caribou Gold Mines. She was the fourth of seven children of the late Bernard Belmore and Eleanor “Dolly” Taylor Belmore. This humble beginning laid the foundation for the start of a beautiful, strong, compassionate and determined young girl. Growing up in this remote mining community taught Glenda to be creative and resourceful. She and her siblings would invent games, play in the woods, sing together, and find joy and humour in even the smallest of things. Music and laughter were present throughout her life.

Glenda blossomed into an extraordinary teacher. The inspiration from her mother as her teacher in a one-room school forged her path as an educator and a lifelong learner. She completed her teaching certificate in Physical Education from Nova Scotia Teachers College and later received her Bachelors and Masters of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University. Glenda saw something special in every student, inspiring them to be their best and to believe in themselves. The connections that she nurtured with her students continued long after their school years. She started her teaching career at Graham Creighton Junior High in Cherrybrook, NS. She went on to teach at many schools in Nova Scotia, including Elmsdale District School, Stewiacke Elementary School, Milford Elementary School and Maple Ridge Elementary School. She also taught in the United States at Greenwood Friends School, Berwick Elementary School and Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) in Pennsylvania.

Playing in the woods as a child in Caribou planted the seeds for her appreciation of nature and her passion for protecting it. She was an advocate with many environmental groups, including Save Caribou, Eastern Shore Forest Watch Association, Flowing Together, David Suzuki Foundation, World Wildlife Federation and Learning for Nature. She completed training as a Wetland Delineator, specializing in plant identification. The impact of her tireless dedication and hard work protecting wildlife and the environment will continue on.

Glenda’s passion also extended to preserving the forgotten history and historical site of Markland, a previously unrecognized settlement in Nova Scotia. She was a founding member and served as Chair of the Icelandic Memorial Society of Nova Scotia. Community was important to Glenda. She initiated and volunteered with local soccer teams, gymnastics clubs, Ladies Keep Fit Fitness program and the Wellington Polar Bear Club to name a few. She was one of the first to start a school garden and composting program in her area. Glenda was a supporting partner and advisor to her husband, Ken’s businesses.

In 1966, Glenda met her future, adoring husband, Ken Burrows from Pennsylvania. He had been hired to fly a private plane to Nova Scotia with a promise of being introduced to the most beautiful girl in the province. Promise delivered. They were married in 1968 and started their life and family in Nova Scotia. Family was Glenda’s life. Their three children, Kenny, Marcy and Jeff are who they are today because of her unwavering love and support. She also loved her children’s spouses as her own. Glenda was blessed with eight wonderful grandchildren who all have fortunately adopted Glenda’s goodness.

Glenda is survived by her husband, Ken; son, Kenny (Alison); daughter, Marcy (Scott Tilford); son, Jeff (Stacie); grandchildren, Zoey, Jada, Ava, Kyah, Calleigh, Emily, Alex and Riley; sisters, Bonnie Price, Betty Belmore (Bill Stevenson), Kathy Didkowsky (John); sister-in-law, Gail Belmore; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Shirley-Dale Easley and Dianne Englund; and brother, Roddy Belmore.

Above all, Glenda was the most caring and loving person put on this earth; a moral guiding light for her family and friends. She played a role in instilling her love of life, learning, compassion, sense of honesty and fairness to all. She will be missed by so many but her legacy of goodness and kindness will continue on in the many people who knew and loved her.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 8th from 1-4 p.m. in Station House at the Wellington Firehall (4132 Highway 2, Wellington, NS).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Icelandic Memorial Society of Nova Scotia www.novascotiaicelanders.ca
