Brenda Dianne (Burris) Fisher

Fisher (Burris), Brenda Dianne – age 72 of Alton, passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2024, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with family at her side, after a brief cancer diagnosis.

Brenda was born in Brantford, Ontario, to Sylvia (Pitts) and the late James Burris.

She was a highly accomplished Loss Prevention and Asset Protection Officer for 35 years.  Her proven performance was supported by numerous awards and achievements in her field.  Brenda worked up until 3 months prior to her death.

Brenda had many interests, but her greatest interests were her flowers and her dogs.

Brenda is survived by her husband of 54 years, Keith; daughter, Anita, and granddaughter, Christina. Also, her siblings, Jim (Leona) Burris and Janice (Harley) Redmond.

She was predeceased by her father and her sister, Jaqueline Moore.

As per Brenda’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.

Theresa Marie Harnish

Harnish, Theresa Marie – Age 53, of Spry Harbour. It is with great sadness that we, the family, share the devastating news of Theresa suddenly passing on August 25, 2024.

Born in Sheet Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Calvin and Pauline Harnish.

She was an avid bingo player, taking trips to many bingo destinations. Theresa enjoyed travelling. She was a very kind person who lived life to the fullest.

Theresa will always be loved and missed by her partner, Kevin Lawlor; sister, Elsie Harnish; brother, Calvin Harnish; sons, John Harnish (Nakisha Lucas-Parker) and Michael (Paige) Smith. Theresa loved all of her eight grandchildren and the one on the way.

Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 7, 2024 at 2 p.m. in Mushaboom Community Centre, 22 Powers Road, Mushaboom.

Shirley Irene Smith

Smith, Shirley Irene – age 90 of Stewiacke. Leaving us with treasured memories and hearts full of sadness, we the family of Shirley Smith announce her passing on August 22, 2024 in Elk Court Enhanced Care, Brookfield with her family by her side.

Born in Stewiacke, she was a daughter of the late Leonard and Esther (Murphy) Wilcox of Stewiacke. She worked for MT&T as an operator in her early years and was a talented seamstress, sewing for many in the community.

Shirley was a friend to all who met her and always drove a group of ladies to church every Sunday morning. She was a longtime member of the Stewiacke Baptist Church (Lifepoint), volunteering as superintendent of Sunday School, treasurer, teacher, deacon and various other leadership roles. Another passion was the fellowship of the ladies Martha Group who served the church and community.

She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, James Ira “Jim” Smith; brother Leonard Wilcox; brothers-in-law, Sheldon Greene, Sid Day; and nieces, Cindy and Vicky MacKenzie.

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her loving son, Stephen (Shelley); grandchildren, Kyle (Samantha), Travis (Christie) and Danielle (Alex) Delaney; great-grandchildren, Rhett, Madison, Tucker, Walker; sisters, Hazel Greene, Amherst; Annie (Jack) MacKenzie, Chilliwack, BC; Dorothy (Graham) MacDonald, Beaver Bank; Elaine Day, Stewiacke; sister-in-law, Marion Wilcox, Dartmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

The Smith family invite friends and family to join in celebrating Shirley’s life at a memorial service to take place on Saturday, August 31 in Lifepoint Church, Main Street East, Stewiacke. Visitation will be 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. with the service commencing at 2 p.m. followed by a committal service in Pine Grove Cemetery, East Stewiacke.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Lionel Hindler and Dr. Karla Armsworthy, and to the staff of Creamery Lane, Elk Court for treating Mom as family. Their kindness and caring go beyond words.

Judith Rae Baker

Baker, Judith Rae – Age 79, passed away peacefully at home August 20, 2024.

Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Julia (Zwicker) Jacques.

She was happily married for 56 years. She worked at Moir’s Chocolate factory before assuming the role of a stay-at-home mom. She enjoyed countless drives to local coffee shops with her husband. In her free time, she enjoyed colouring, diamond art and playing games as well as watching tv or listening to the radio. She recently spent time with her homecare providers driving to Tim Hortons and on other road trips.

She will be deeply missed and always loved by her husband, Melvin; son, Raymond (Wendy); granddaughters, Shianne, Chelsey, Brandy; and great-grandson, Carlos, all of East Jeddore.

Visitation will be Monday, August 26, 2024 1 – 1:45 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. in Marine Drive Pentecostal Church, officiated by Pastor Scott Anderson. Burial will take place in East Jeddore Cemetery after the service. A reception will follow in Marine Drive Pentecostal Church.

Kathryn "Kaye" Vida May Rogers

Rogers, Kathryn “Kaye” Vida May – age 93 of Enfield, passed away August 20, 2024 in The Magnolia Continuing Care with family by her side.

Born in Dutch Settlement, she was a daughter of the late Blanchard and Anna (Isenor) Ashley.

Family was the most important part of Kaye’s life. She was passionate about quilting, sewing, knitting and cooking. For those who knew Kaye best knew that she was feisty, quick-witted and enjoyed a good game of cards.

She will always be loved and missed by daughters, Cindy-Lee (Jamie) Stevens, Valerie (Greg) Hines; daughter-in-law, Sandy; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren with the 14th on the way; brothers, Murray (Linda), Reid (Carolyn); sister, Ferne; and sister-in-law, Helen.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley; son, Philip; daughter, Anna-Marie; brothers, Wayne and Dwight; sister, Elva “Diddy” (Currie); and brother-in-law, Lawrence.

Cremation has taken place.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 30 at 11 a.m. in St. George’s Anglican Church, Dutch Settlement with a reception to follow.

Lemmon, Alvin Leroy – Age 81, of Dean passed away July 19, 2024 in Dartmouth General Hospital.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at 2 p.m. in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean followed by a committal in Dean Cemetery.

Joseph "Kenton" Ingram "Igor" Bray

Bray, Joseph “Kenton” Ingram “Igor” - It is with very heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kenton Bray at the age of 66. He passed away peacefully in his sleep in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, after a tough battle with cancer on August 18, 2024.
Kenton was a loving, kind hearted man. He worked both lobster fishing and in the forestry industry. He always helped a friend in need, and was loved by many for his great sense of humor and the fact he would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. He loved traveling across the country with his loving wife and spent time in every province making many friends in each one.
His Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 26th in Groundswell Church, Truro at 7 p.m. 
He is survived by and will be deeply missed by his wife, Johanne Claudette Bray; children, Steven, Cruise, Kenton Jr, Mary and Ester; brothers and sisters, Bernadette, Gale Anne, Colleen, Denise (Hughie James), Trevor, Darrell, Bucky, Jack and Andy; and his friends, Stephanie, Neil, Steve, Linda, Leah, and nearly everyone around the Truro area.
Many thanks are given to the doctors, nurses, hospice volunteers, CCA’s and VON workers that went above and beyond to help him during his final months. Also, the friends that stuck by to help him and his wife during such hardship.

Weldon Cameron Mosher

Mosher, Weldon Cameron – age 92 of Musquodoboit Harbour, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 18, 2024 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital.

Born in Musquodoboit Harbour, he was a son of the late Cameron and Hazel (Bond) Mosher.

Weldon enjoyed camping, jam sessions, family gatherings, going to the local dances, playing snooker and pool. He was a lifetime member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 161, Gaetz Brook from where he received his 50-year pin. He served with the RCAF from 1951-1965. Following his time in the military, he went on to a career with O.P. Mosher and Sons where he was employed as a maintenance foreman looking after the heavy equipment. On July 22, 1975, he received the Carnegie Medal for act of heroism rescuing a 10-month old from a burning vehicle. Weldon was honored to be selected to do the final salute at the Cenotaph Remembrance Day Service in Porters Lake. While living in Upper Musquodoboit, he had been a member of the Volunteer Fire Department and Musquodoboit Valley Lions Club.

He will always be loved and missed by his children, Laurie (Wendy), Darlene (Carter), Darrell (Rosalyn); daughter-in-law, Lisa; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; goddaughter, Tanya (Brian) Bowser; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Olive Luddington.

He was predeceased by his wife, Maxine (Parks); sons, Brian and Anthony; companion and friend, Betty Crittenden. As the last surviving member of his family, he was predeceased by siblings, Marion, Kenneth, Roy and Ruby.

Cremation has taken place.

A Service and Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Royal Canadian Legion Branch 161, Gaetz Brook. A private burial will be held in St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery, Musquodoboit Harbour.

Corrine Lavinia Isenor

Isenor, Corrine Lavinia - It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Corrine. Following her beloved hummingbirds, on Saturday, August 17, 2024, Corrine Lavinia Isenor left us to begin her next adventures.

A loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister and pie-maker extraordinaire, Corrine at the age 74, leaves a huge void within Nova Scotia’s Dutch Settlement community.

Valuing the simple life, Corrine spent the entirety of her years living within a one square block radius at the heart of the Dutch Settlement. Marrying her childhood sweetheart, Darrel Isenor (Brady) at the age of 16; their romance laid the foundation for a close and loving family, that thrived on camping, games and attending dances. Not just the center of her own family, she was a mother and friend to many in the community and will be sorely missed, especially her famous pies. Corrine was well loved for her cooking…she will undoubtedly be creating her goulashes and stews and baking her coconut and chocolate cream pies in her next adventure.

After 42 years of marriage, Corrine was widowed and focused upon family and friends until meeting Bob Pearl. She and Bob would spend the next 14 years lovingly going for long drives, camping and playing Kings in the Corner…and rumour has it, engaging in cake fights.

Strong-willed with a tenaciously big heart, Corrine leaves behind brothers, Clyde, Ashley, Curtis, Kirk, Daniel, and Todd; sisters, Gloria (Tootie) Hines, and Leca Isenor; children, Darren and Anna, Dwight and Becky, and Troy (RIP); grandchildren, Justin, Ken, Troy and Angelica.

Rest in Peace Mom…go dance with the grace of hummingbirds.

We would like to send a huge thank-you out to the team of the Colchester Palliative Department as well as the Colchester Dialysis Team. Their support has been exceptional, and we are eternally grateful.

Frank Ross

Ross, Frank – Frank passed away at home August 16, 2024 at the age of 76.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Sheila (McCorkill); son, Jamie (Jocelyn); grandchildren, Wyatt, Montana (Justin), Shianne (Shawn); great-grandchildren, Addy, Gordon, Jackson; son, Scott (Dawn); granddaughter, Katelyn, great-grandson, Gage; brother, Norman (Diana); and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, James and Evelyn; and sister, Jane (Ron Currie).

Frank spent most of his career as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at Halterm and Ceres Corp until he retired in 2008. He was a proud member of AA with 46 years of recovery. Frank loved hunting, fishing, gardening and just being outdoors, especially running the skidder when logging with Jamie, Garfie and Scott.

No matter the topic, he always had words of wisdom or a silly quote that fit the situation.

Special thanks to Dawn Ross and her team for their exceptional care as well as VON for their care since he came home. A very special thanks to nephew, Christian, our very own personal chef.

At Frank’s request, there will be no funeral or visitation.

Owen Roy Leslie

Leslie, Owen Roy - Age 69 of Halifax, passed away at home on August 14, 2024.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Irma Leslie (Brenton).

Owen was a lifelong lover of animals, nature and the outdoors. He owned several dogs throughout his life that were his constant companions including Bandit, the beagle that stole his heart. In his younger days he could often be found alongside a river or stream, fishing and he brought home dinner many times. Owen had a generous spirit and kind nature – he saw the best in others and was quick to share whatever he could with his friends. His SUV was one of his prize possessions and he was often giving drives to neighbours and friends, helping them accomplish must needed errands. He loved to watch sports, Sundays were all about football and he was a lifelong Oilers fan. Owen lived his life unapologetically, and had a “take me as I am” mentality. He loved his family, especially his mother Irma and served as her primary caregiver for many years.

Owen is survived by his sister, Lynn Poole, Middle Musquodoboit; brother, Wayne (Susan) Leslie, Halifax; and four nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place.

A burial service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 11 am in Westside Cemetery, Carter Road, Brookfield, Nova Scotia.

Hartlin, Lewis Avery – Age 83, of Upper Musquodoboit passed away December 9, 2023 in Elk Court, Brookfield. A graveside service will be held in Hillcrest Cemetery on Saturday, August 31 at 11:30 a.m. followed by a reception in Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 137, Upper Musquodoboit.

Kaye Vimy (Miller) Borden

Borden, Kaye Vimy (Miller) – Kaye passed away peacefully in The Mira in Truro, on August 13, 2024.

Kaye arrived in Noel Shore at the home of the late Ernest Miller and Ellen (Hines) Miller on April 9, 1936. She lived most of her married life in Maitland, until her health deteriorated and she moved to The Mira in Truro.

Kaye was predeceased by her husband, Robert Borden. She was also predeceased by brothers, Jack Miller, Harry (Bernice) Miller, Frank Miller and Lou Miller; sisters, Aileen (Lester) Fahey, Ora (Fred) Nolan, Myrtis (Henry) Hennigar, Opal (Joe) Liutkus, Ruby Dimock (Harold Faulkner and Ray Dimock), Bertha (Ron) Hollingsworth, Pauline Keating and brother-in-law, Ron Lamond.

Kaye is survived by daughter, Zura Borden (Lloyd MacKenzie); grandson, Robert MacKenzie; great-grandchildren, RJ MacKenzie and Serenity Young, their mother, Chantal Young. She is also survived by her special nephew, (who she thought of as a son), Tom Nolan and his wife, Suzanne and their children, Catherine and Shannon.

Kaye is survived by her sister and only remaining member of her family, Erma Lamond; also two sisters-in-law, Babe Miller and Betty Miller; and many nieces and nephews.

I would like to thank the staff of The Mira, (especially Susan Rhyno), for the exceptional care given Mum while she was a resident there.

As per her wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no funeral. Her ashes will be buried privately, at a later date.

Christina "Tina" Louise Kennedy

Kennedy, Christina “Tina” Louise - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of Christina “Tina” Louise Kennedy, beloved sister and aunt, cherished friend and coworker, and devoted family member. Tina passed away on August 11, 2024 at the young age of 65.

Born in Halifax, Tina was a pillar of strength and love. She was very kind-hearted and would do anything in her power to help anyone in her path: family, friends, neighbours, even strangers. Tina dedicated her life to her late husband, Ernie, and her late parents, Tom and Marion. She was the most devoted wife and daughter. Music, road trips, coffee, and time spent with family and friends replenished her soul. Her passions also included crafting, baking, gardening, and enjoying life.

Tina is survived by her brothers, Tommy Kennedy (Ellie), Tony Kennedy (Stephanie), Todd Kennedy (Tina-Lynn); many loving nieces and nephews, in-laws, and extended family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernie Blackburn, only three months before her passing; her loving parents, Tom and Marion Kennedy (Tufts); her in-laws, Earl and Marion “Molly” Blackburn, Barb Streatch, and David Blackburn.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Tina in The Inn on Prince, 437 Prince St., Truro on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024 from 6-8 p.m.

Tina will remain in our hearts and be remembered for her unwavering positivity, boundless generosity, and loving spirit. Her song has ended, but her melody will linger on forever and always. XXXOOO

Robert "Bob" Sinclair Miller

Miller, Robert “Bob” Sinclair – age 75, passed away August 9, 2024 in Magnolia Continuing Care, Enfield.

Born in Bedford, he was a son of the late Walter and Eleanor (Griswold) Miller.

Bob enjoyed drawing, salt water and companionship. He loved being around people and in the company of his dogs.

Surviving are sons, James (Crystal), Bobby (Melissa); granddaughters, Madison, Mariah, Jessie; sisters, Donna and Bev.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Linda.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Upper Rawdon Cemetery, Upper Rawdon.

Sherry Lynn (Reid) Johnson

Johnson (Reid), Sherry Lynn - Age 60 of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away in Colchester East Hants Health Centre on August 8, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Brantford, Ontario she was a daughter of Shirley (Shaw) Isenor, Truro and the late Graham Reid and step-daughter of the late Earl Isenor.

Sherry was a lover of animals and nature. She enjoyed being outside working in her blueberry field and building pastures for her horse, Wes. In more recent years she took up knitting and was a natural talent, making sweaters for many family members. She also enjoyed baking - bread and rolls were her specialty.

Sherry is survived by her loving partner, Guy LeBlanc; her children, Tim Reid, Jacob Johnson (Chelsea), both of Truro; grandson, Lloyal; step-children, Jennifer (Adam), Jessica (Tyler), Nicholas Johnson, Scott Johnson; step-granddaughter, Autumn; brother, Brian (Deborah), Lawrencetown; sister, Michele (Larry Wilson), Bridgewater; several nieces and nephews. Sherry will be missed by special friends, Tina Lismore, Jo Ellen Strickland and cousin, Betty. She will also be missed by her horse, Wes; dogs, Keta, Jasmine, Kallie; and her five cats.

The family would like to thank the VON for Sherry’s in home care during her illness, the Oncology staff and the Palliative Care team in CEHHC, including the attentive care of Dr. Henderson. Also, Dr Willows, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.

Charles Robert Killen

Killen, Charles Robert – Age 74, of Debert and formerly Musquodoboit Valley, passed away August 8, 2024 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro due to complications of spinal cord injury.

Born in Elderbank, he was a son of the late Murray and Ada (Rhind) Killen.

Charles is survived by his beloved life partner, Elizabeth Illingworth; brother, Alden (Shirley), Dartmouth; sister, Pat (John), Edmonton, AB; brother-in-law, Roger (Joan), Lower Sackville; sister-in-law, Colleen, Debert; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also left behind to mourn are Elizabeth’s daughters, Rachel (David), Franklin, Mass.; and Ginny, Whitehorse, Yukon.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Ethel and brothers, Douglas in infancy and Gary.

Charles was a lifetime farmer and forester. He took great pride in his woodlot. He enjoyed antique tractors, listening to CBC Radio, travelling and attending agricultural exhibitions around the province. For several years, he travelled the Maritimes as an accountant with Agricultural Tax Services.

His stubborn spirit enabled him to live through spinal cord injury.

Special thanks to his niece, Katrina for her unwavering devotion and support.

Special mention and thanks to EHS paramedics, Dr. Karen Day and Dr. Briana Kelly. Much appreciation to VON and Colchester Home Care.

Elizabeth would like to thank all friends who provided support to her and Charles during these last difficult years. Charles appreciated every visit, phone call and email.

Charlie Jodrey

Jodrey, Charlie - With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Charlie Jodrey, who left us peacefully at the age of 80 in late July. Born in New Canada, Lunenburg County, he was best known for his tireless work ethic and love for nature. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and the moments he could share stories and a homemade meal with his family. He had a special place in his heart for his time spent at “the camp” in Bridgewater, sitting on the veranda or working in the wood lot. A devoted grandfather, Charlie took immense pride in all his grandkids. His legacy lives on through the fond memories and lessons he imparted on them. Charlie had a unique passion for recording NASCAR races on his VCR. He enjoyed his dedicated career in the Christmas tree and wood industry. Even at 80 years old, he still drove his dually truck anywhere he went. He was a retired volunteer firefighter with 30 years service with HRFES and a lifetime member of the Westphal Cole Harbour Firefighters Association for 47 years. 

Charlie is survived by his former wife, Mary Anne (Knox) Jodrey; brother, Wayne Dominey (Sandra); sons, Eugene (Melissa), Scott (Gale) and Patrick (Amanda); grandchildren, Micheal (Jody), Makayla, Sophia, Jayden and Kobie; and great-grandchildren, Cameran and Olivia.

He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Grace (Knox) Jodrey; brother, Frank; sister-in-law, Anne Jodrey; and in-laws, Cecil and Helen Knox.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to charity of your choice in his memory.

Charlie will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Robert "Bobby" George Campbell

Campbell, Robert “Bobby” George - Robert George “Bobby” Campbell passed away on August 7, 2024, at the age of 67. Bobby, or as we knew him, Dad, was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to everyone.

Born in Truro, he was a son of Laura Mary (Finley) Campbell, and Everett Malcolm Campbell, and adopted son of his Aunt Marjorie Forbes (Campbell) Henderson and Uncle Donald B. Henderson.  

Dad leaves behind a literal village of people who will love and miss him forever including his ex-wife and mother of his children, Linda Johnson; their three daughters, Kelsey (Matthew), Bailey (Andrew), and Ally (Justin); his siblings, Nancy (Greg), Patsy (Herb), Betty, Paul, Billy; cousin and adopted brother, Mike (Brenda); as well as many, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He will always be remembered as “Man” by his grandchildren, Layla, Ellie-May, Beau, and Sawyer. They will forever miss their Sunday morning “Mancakes” and movie nights with their Man.

Dad was a deeply beloved father, uncle, cousin, brother, and friend. His passing was sudden and unexpected but quick, just like he would have wanted.

Dad’s early life was defined by his dedication to athletics. He was recognized and respected provincially and nationally as the emotional heart and co-Captain of the Brookfield Elks fastpitch softball dynasty. He broke into Senior Men’s fastpitch as a 17-year-old, played 16 seasons for the Elks, and participated in ten National Championships, winning gold, silver and bronze medals. All of this took place in an era when softball was the dominant summertime sport, and teams had to win the provincial title to advance to the Canadian Championships. He then coached teams in the Elks program for many years - five of his nephews would go on to play at Nationals. Dad’s former teammates on the Elks were his lifelong friends and meant the world to him.

Dad instilled countless lessons in us growing up, first and foremost was the importance of honesty and that he would never be mad at us as long we did not lie to him (even if you hypothetically backed his jeep into a ditch after a party and could have gotten away with it). Perhaps his most significant lesson of all was the importance of being there for the ones you love. He was always there when you needed him, it did not matter the time of day or what kind of trouble you had gotten yourself in, Dad would show up.

Dad got a new lease on life after suffering a massive heart attack in 2016, and lived each day to its absolute fullest. He took on new hobbies like tracking cloud formations, astronomy, and became a master chef as well as an incredible baker. He cherished his time with us and his greetings always began with an affectionate “Hey, you” and ended with a tight squeeze and a “love you, child.”

While we lost our Dad, there are countless others who have lost a friend and loved one in him. He showed up for everyone in his life with a fun “fact,” which he may have to revise a day or two later with corrected information, timely and sage advice, or sarcastic humor when needed. He loved being a part of a big family, both in the traditional sense of the word and also the families he created through ball teams, fishing camps, or his hobby golf course, the “Garden Links.” He has left a hole in all of our lives that can never be filled.

We invite you all to share your fun “facts,” pictures or memories. He would want everyone to laugh and reminisce, and smile together during this time. We hope you all root for the San Franscisco 49ers this year in his honour.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Dad’s life will be held at a later date.
