Charlton, Chief Petty Officer 1st Class (Ret’d) Richard Joseph Laurie - We are deeply saddened to share that Richard Charlton died suddenly at home in Halifax on September 1, 2024 at the age of 72.
Born in Chicoutimi, QC, Rick was a son of the late Cecil and Joan (Power) Charlton. Rick was a devoted husband and is survived by his wife of 24 years, Cathy Charlton; son, Matthew Charlton; and daughter, Emily Kehn; stepchildren, Shannon (Vondrasek) Holland and Mark Vondrasek; brothers, Dan Charlton, Marc Charlton and Paul Charlton; and sister, Elizabeth Young. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Charlton. He will be dearly missed by his family and close friends.
On April 10, 1975, Rick joined the Royal Canadian Navy to become a Hull Tech and honorably served his country until his retirement on January 8, 2009. During his career he served on board various ships and units on the West Coast and Ottawa. He was a proud sailor and his love of the ocean continued into his civilian life.
Since moving to Halifax in 2019, Rick spend many hours watching boats in the Bedford Basin from his condo balcony. He also started pickling, making antipasto and especially loved being the official taste tester of Cathy’s baking. Rick had a lifelong love of golf, watching F1 racing, enjoyed working on Sudoku puzzles and reading thriller novels. He had an outgoing personality and loved to make people laugh and smile.
Cremation has been entrusted to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Rick will be interned at Sea, off HMCS Sackville, Battle of Atlantic Sunday, May 2025.
A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends on Tuesday, October 15th from 1-3 p.m. in Ashburn Golf Club, 3250 Joseph Howe Dr., Halifax.
