Clyde David Smith

Smith, Clyde David – It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Clyde David Smith at age 78, of Lantz on September 7, 2024 in QEII Hospital, VG Site with family present.

Clyde was born in Fort St. John, BC but made his way east where he would eventually meet his future wife.

Clyde is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie and took great pride in raising their family together. As well, Smitty is survived by his children, Paula (David) Horne, Cheryl (Shane) Schneiderman and David (Melissa) Smith. Papa adored his grandchildren and any opportunity to share in their lives. Beau, Ella, Cody, Lucas, Thomas and Maggie “Muggins” as he loved to refer to the youngest of the crew, brought endless hours of joy and love to his life. Clyde is also survived by his brother, Donnie (Donna) Smith; sisters, Linda Hanley, Nancy (Ken) Smith, Lynda (Darrel) Magerl; many brothers and sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Richard and David Smith; and sister, Laura Hines.

Smitty was always looking for an adventure or a reason to ‘run the roads’. So many fond memories of family camping weekends, the cross-country road trip to Red Deer in ’93, celebrating his children’s athletic pursuits, pontooning on Grand Lake, playing cards and crib and any form of competition that raised the stakes! Most of all though, Smitty knew the value in the smallest of life’s gifts, from eating a good meal out with Marie, conversations with his family about work, their lives and world events, countless family gatherings, and Sunday dinners. He loved his leisurely annual road trip through the beautiful Annapolis Valley. A favorite destination for him and time to share his own fond memories of his childhood spent in Karsdale.

Smitty was an athlete in his earlier years, spending time playing fastball with the Brookfield Elks and pioneering the whip pitch locally. Anyone who knew Smitty’s pitching finesse knew he threw a mean change-up!

Dad was also a self-made man, running his own successful masonry company for most of his life. He was so proud of the work his companies did for many commercial projects throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and in particular, the development of the East Hants Sportsplex. Upon retirement, he found his way to driving a school bus and loved his school kids and their daily stories.

Dad came from humble beginnings and helped to instill in his family that working hard, taking pride in a job well done and being a loving and generous person are great standards to live by. We love him dearly and will miss him greatly.

We would like to thank the paramedics, Lantz Firefighters and the many doctors and nurses in the ICU Units in Colchester East Hants Health Centre and VG Site for the care and comfort provided during Dad’s short illness. As well thanks to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.

Memorial donations may be made to St. George’s Cemetery Fund, 1089 Highway 277, Dutch Settlement, Nova Scotia B2S 2J6.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 13 at 11 a.m. in St. George’s Church, Dutch Settlement.
