Leonard "Lenny" Arnold Spike

Spike, Leonard “Lenny” Arnold – 69 of Enfield. It is with heartfelt sadness, deep sorrow, and much love that we announce the peaceful passing of our Papa Lenny on Monday, June 6, 2023, at home surrounded by his family.

He was predeceased by and was a son of the late George and Marjorie (Boutilier) Spike; sister, Donna Spike; first wife, Diane Spike and Dad to David Barbier.

He will be forever loved and missed by his surviving love of his life and loving partner, Carmen Barbier; children, Cathy Spike, Adam Spike, Lisa Williams (Jamie), Marcus Barbier; grandchildren, Bailee, Kelton, Jayden, Gracie, and Liam; brothers, Brian Spike (Rose), Paul Spike (Tracey); as well as nieces and nephews; best friend and sister in-law, Christina Bell; family sister, Brenda Myrer-Fletcher; special niece, Nicole Jessome-Clarke; and his cat, his buddy, Harley.

Lenny grew up in the country and had a love for adventure in his 5th avenue cars and storytelling. Lenny spent his working career with a hard work ethic as a masonry trades worker and working at the Halifax International Airport. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Lenny liked listening to music, 96.5 The Breeze and sitting on his deck in the sun reading his western books and keeping a keen eye on the weather.  He had a passion for baking his famous bread and baked beans and loved peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

Finding life-long friends was a skill he had. He became well-known as the community papa to the children in his community and the man who had the tool if you were in need. He was the most compassionate and non-judgmental man you would ever meet and was always smiling. Lenny will be remembered for his silly sense of humor and even when he began to feel weaker, the kindness he showed to all and his smile touched the hearts of many, that will forever be cherished.

Remember Lenny for his positive outlook on life and we were so lucky to have him for as long as we did, and he always longed for others to be happy.

It’s a state of mind and I’m always there, it could be how you’re raised or a place you call home, but it is writing a crazy story and it’s making it your own. With a little more love and a lot less hating. Be who you want to be because everybody else is taken.

We love you Papa Lenny and will miss you forever and always. Thank you for being you.

Out of respect of Lenny’s wishes, there will be no visitation or reception. A family burial will be held at a later date.

                                                          “With Dignity”

Ethel "Molly" Mary Lennerton

Lennerton, Ethel “Molly” Mary - It is with sadness and heavy hearts, that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother and grandmother on Thursday, May 18, 2023 in The Mira Long Term Care Centre, Truro.

Molly was born in Sussex, England, to Keith and Ethel Harman (Pointer).

Molly’s family, and anyone who spent time with her, could always find comfort in her warm, peaceful nature. To be near her was to be in the presence of grace. Molly rarely complained, and never expressed negativity toward anyone. She was a wonderful listener. Health conscious, she made daily exercise and moderation a priority. Molly’s etiquette and mannerisms were impeccable.

Molly was an English-Canadian war bride, having met her future husband, Doug, a Canadian Service Man, during the Second World War, in England. Over the years, she would share nostalgic stories about her life in England as a girl.

Leaving England in 1945 to start her new life in Canada, with eighteen-month-old son Michael in tow, was not without its challenges. However, Molly was never one to dwell on hardship. She had always referred to her journey across the Atlantic and the transition to family life in an unfamiliar country as “an adventure.” She was in love with her dashing husband, and went on to have three more children, Linda, Sharon and Amanda.

Until recently, she was blessed to have lived in her own home in Stewiacke, in close proximity to her daughters and granddaughter, Megan. She cherished her son Michael’s frequent visits from Montreal.

Molly was just three months short of her 101st birthday. She is survived by her children, Michael, Linda, Sharon (Blaise) and Amanda; grandchildren, Cecilia, Jeffrey, Denise, Krista, Joey, Tammy, Jaime, Jeffrey, Megan and Keegan; nineteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. John "Wayne" Hartlen

Hartlen, John “Wayne” It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Wayne Hartlen, of Fletchers Lake on May 8, 2023, at the age of 80. Wayne passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Wayne will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Zelda (Erskine); son, Ryan (Kim); grandson, Luke; brothers, Eric (Joan) Hartlen, and Greg (Lee) Hartlen along with nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and the community of St. John’s United Church. He was predeceased by his parents, Eric and Muriel (Cane) Hartlen.

Wayne grew up in Bedford and Fletchers Lake, the oldest of three boys. In 1975 he graduated with his Bachelor of Divinity from the Atlantic School of Theology and was ordained by the United Church of Canada. He served pastoral charges in Welsford, NB, and Woodside Imperoyal Dartmouth. He also completed an internship in chaplaincy at Dalhousie and Mount Saint Vincent Universities. In 1984 Wayne earned his Masters of Social Work and followed his passion to help others working for Children’s Aid. He then completed a year of postgraduate study at the North Shore Counseling Centre in BC, after which he spent time with the Stratton Project, Crosby House, and in private practice. In 2015 Wayne unexpectedly had his leg amputated above the knee due to vascular complications, which although changed his life, did not change his resolve or positive outlook. In 2022 he was diagnosed with vascular dementia. He was a character. And he was memorable - you generally didn’t forget meeting him. He was an extrovert and thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people. His smile was constant and his laugh easily identifiable in a crowd. He was an avid reader, sports enthusiast, loved the outdoors - camping, canoeing, fires by the lake, and spent many happy moments at Berwick Camp each summer. In recent years his favorite pastime was doing “kid things” with his grandson, Luke. His sense of humor was larger than life and he was quick to speak his mind but was also a great listener.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the many healthcare professionals who cared for Wayne over the course of his journey in recent years.

A celebration of life will be held at St. John’s United Church, 3360 Highway 2 in Fall River, Monday, May 15th at 11 a.m. with reception to follow.
