Shirley Charmaine Bishop

Bishop, Shirley Charmaine – Age 94, of Dartmouth, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully November 27, 2021 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour.

Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Edward Marshall McLellan and Ethel May (Pope) McLellan.

Shirley often spoke of the wonderful times she and her sister, Marie had as children playing near the shore of Bedford Basin picking periwinkles and looking for treasure that would wash up on the shore. Shirley was very active in school in her younger years, participating as a member of the school basketball team and as a drama student where she loved to act and direct in plays. As a young woman she worked for R.W. Wright & Co. Wholesale & Retail Stationers on Granville Street in Halifax. She managed to save some of her wages for a trip to New York which was a highlight in her life. There she saw a few famous people on the streets, one of which was Cary Grant. During her time as a Navy wife, she was a member of the Navy Wives and Wrens helping families with child care, food and clothing or any other need as required in her community. Shirley was the "Florence Nightingale" of the family, always prepared to help others in their time of need with her unique blend of love and support. She was a loving wife and mother who was devoted to her family and friends and always tried to instill in her sons the ideal of "doing unto others as you would have them do unto you". Special mention should be made of Shirley’s friend of more than 60 years, Barbara Allen, who maintained a very close friendship with her till the end.

She is survived by her sons, Foster (Ann) and Paul; grandsons, Michael (Niki) and Nicholas (Amanda); granddaughters, Sarah (Josh) and Cindy (Alex); great-grandsons, Hunter, Roman and Jackson. She was predeceased by her husband, Foster Frederick Bishop in 2005; and her sister, Marie McLellan in 2010.

Shirley’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital for their selfless compassion in the care of their mother.

As per Shirley’s wishes there will be no official service.

In lieu of flowers and in recognition of the Christmas season of giving, donations may be made to the Eastern Shore Food Bank in memory of Shirley Bishop.

James Robert Kidson

Kidson, James Robert – It is with a broken heart that I share the passing of Jim on the morning of December 1, 2021. He will be remembered as a loving, kind, gentle, hardworking, honest man by all who knew him. He was taken much too soon!

He was the owner and operator of Kidson Excavating for many years. Around the community there are many examples of his talent as an excavator operator. There are many stone walls, landscaping projects, and his famous Inukshuk in Oyster Pond. He loved his work but decided it was time to retire at the end of 2018. He had planned on many more years of retirement but enjoyed everyday of the short time he had. He spent many hours making walking trails through the woods.

He is survived by his wife, Lynda and children, Trevor (Julie), Lake Echo; Tammy (Sandy), Oakville; and Janice (Mattes), Germany. He also leaves behind to mourn his passing, his mother, Clara and siblings, Anita (Barry), John (Heather), Diana (Eddie), Olga and Paul (Krista). He was a proud grandfather to three granddaughters and five grandsons.

He was predeceased by his father, James and sister, Linda Laybolt.

A graveside service will be held in Union Church Cemetery, Lake Charlotte at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021. There will be a Memory Box on site. The family would appreciate it if you could share a memory or story of your interaction with Jim. He has grandchildren that did not have an opportunity to get to know him. We would like to share this box with them when they are older.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Rest in Peace my Love, until we are reunited someday….

Paul Joseph Poirier

Poirier, Paul Joseph – Age 71, of Lindsay Lake passed away November 18, 2021 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital.

Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Joseph Poirier and the late Helen “Peggy” (nee Reinhardt) Scown.

He is survived by his wife, Norma (nee Cranton) Poirier, and their two daughters, Jordan (Russell) DeLong, Bedford; and Haylee Poirier, New Glasgow. Also survived by siblings, Richard, Mississauga; Nadine Allison, Fort Lauderdale; Joel, Mississauga; nieces and nephew, Jennifer McDonough, Stephanie Mirsky, Sophie Schöld, Samuel Cranton and Talia Cranton.

Paul was an honest and generous man. He was intellectually brilliant and was gifted in many areas, such as music and computer programming. He was especially proud of his work with MacKay Meters of Westville, for whom he designed and wrote Parking Meter Management Software which was implemented and used world-wide. He also wrote Handicapping and Tournament software which was used for several years at various golf courses.

Unfortunately, Paul was haunted by the demons of his past, especially being deserted by his father at the age of 15, when he was left to live alone on the streets of Halifax. He never fully recovered from this abandonment and many other hurts that followed. For many years he found contentment in his family, home, and work, but eventually, depression became his constant companion.

Just one year ago he was diagnosed with several serious medical conditions. In spite of all the specialist visits and trips to Halifax, so far as we knew, no clear path of treatment was ever determined for him.

The process of arranging palliative care had begun when he took a turn for the worse and had to be admitted to hospital on Nov 15th.  The doctors had cleared him to be discharged and to return home on the 19th, but he died peacefully in his sleep just a few hours after his wife’s visit on the 18th. It is comforting to know that they had that last pleasant morning together.

Cremation has taken place under the care of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Due to Covid-19 travel and gathering restrictions, no service has been planned for the immediate future. Updates will be posted on Norma’s  Facebook page.

Rodrick "Red" Angus McNeil

Rodrick “Red” Angus McNeil, born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, was the heart and soul of Wittenburg and a legend in his own time by those who’ve been lucky enough to know him. Red lived life to the fullest and left this earth with no regrets. He passed peacefully on November 5, 2021 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Red was a carpenter by trade but was truly a jack of all trades. He loved to work with his hands and had the skills, imagination, and determination to overcome any task he set his mind to. He loved being outdoors hunting, fishing, and gardening, he loved to cook and play cribbage, and took great pride in sharing that time with others.

To know Red was to know love. He was the kind of person you could meet once and feel like you’ve known him a lifetime. Whether you were family or a friend, he made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. He would even tell you “I love you the most”, and it didn’t matter if you knew he told everyone that, you still felt it.

There was nothing Red loved more in this world than his family. His greatest pride was in the love of his life and wife of 46 years, Diane Theresa Saulnier. He said the moment he laid eyes on her, he thought she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and would proudly say, “She still is to this day”. He said he knew he was going to marry her one day, but it was her homemade butter tarts that really sealed the deal. He was incredibly proud of his kids, Andrea (“Farmer” Andre Gaudrault), Brandon (Erin) and Wesley (Shawna); and loved being Grampy to his grandsons, Liam, Maddox, Luca, Ewan, and Sullivan. He is also survived by siblings, Helen Boise (Gary Leblanc), Louise MacNeil, Beverley (Donald) Corbett, Irene Chant (Jim Brown), Sheila Kennedy, Kevin (Dody) MacNeil, Charles (Bernadette) MacNeil, Muriel (Doug) Lively; and many nieces and nephews who were very special to him. He is predeceased by his parents, Roderick and Rose Ann (Hill) MacNeil; sister, Louise Rosemary; brothers, Francis and Malcom MacNeil.

Red was the man with endless stories of personal experiences, and he loved to share them with others. He’d tell them with so much enthusiasm and detail that you felt like you had those moments with him. He was the life of every party, always smiling and happy, he was quick witted and full of jokes. The young and old alike looked forward to his company. Everyone looked forward to him picking up his guitar and belting out tunes. There is no other man who can sing “Bobby McGee” or “Mule Skinner Blues” like him.

Rodrick Angus was proud of his Scottish heritage, and of being raised in Cape Breton. He was particularly proud of the McNeil family motto, “to conquer or die”, and if there was ever a man true to this phrase it was Red, defying death many times and battling to the end.

There will only ever be one Red. They broke the mould after they made him. He was simply the best. His loss will be felt for lifetimes. When asked if he had anything he wanted to pass on, he simply said “Keep it light and speak from the heart always”.

Family flowers only, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Colchester Food Bank. Special thanks to Dr. Lorraine Pelley for care and compassion.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, at 2 p.m. in Wittenburg Baptist Church with Pastor Paul Worden officiating. Burial in Mountainview Cemetery. Masks, proof of vaccination and ID are required at the service. Reception and celebration of life to follow at McNeil family home.

Teresa Rosalind March

March, Teresa Rosalind –Age 80, of Stewiacke Road, West St. Andrews, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 24th, 2021, at home with her beloved family where she wanted to be. She was with people she recognized and loved. She was the daughter of the late Evelena Rose (Hayden) Rines and Charles Ross Rines.

People who knew and loved Teresa enjoyed her for her amazing, considerate, and giving personality. She gave of herself to the extent she would gladly go without if she thought she was making a difference in someone else’s life. Her personal success came from helping to make someone else’s happiness and success, and she never expected anything in return except love and respect. Those two gifts we gave her in abundance along with patience, honesty, sincerity, and a sense of self-worth, which she soaked up like a sponge. My mother had a sense of humor that was rare. She shined for the time she was with us. She was so excited to have such a spacious bedroom, and a queen sized bed she practically got lost in! She constantly reported to us that this was “her bedroom and her bed!” We were so privileged to make our home her home. It did not take much to keep her happy. To know her was to love her, and we did. She was overwhelmed with company in such a wonderful way. Each person that came to visit Teresa brought her such joy. Donald and I always memorialized all her visits with pictures and video so she could watch again and again. Donald and I are so sad that we did not have more time with her, but we are confident we shall see her again! We have the confidence and the honor of knowing we made the best memories and life for my dear mother while she was with us both.

She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Rose Diane Cates (Donald), of West St. Andrews, Stewiacke, and Darlene Evelyn Ruth Shipley (Daryl), of Onslow Mt. Road, Truro;  along with her beloved grandchildren, Joby (Christa), Pepper (Brian), and Joseph (Kenda); her beloved sister, Shirley Smith, Truro; and her beloved twin brother, Tracey Rines, Belmont;  her great- grandchildren; as well as great-great-grandchildren; along with several wonderful nieces and nephews. One niece in particular, Marion Currie (Greg), Masstown, gave her a very special gift when she brought mom’s twin brother, Tracey, from Belmont, who is also in Palliative Care, to her home, in West St. Andrews, Stewiacke, to visit Mom. Truly a heart-warming compassionate experience. One that has been forever carved in our memory!

Besides her parents, Teresa was predeceased by her dear infant son, Donald Samuel; her beloved husband, Henry Arthur March; brothers, Leslie, Peter, Charles, and Kenneth; sisters, Gloria, Doreen, Elsie, and Gertrude.

Cremation has taken place under the care of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Services will be held virtually on Zoom on November 6 at 2 p.m. so family and friends from all over Canada can attend if they wish to from the comfort of their own homes.

Gay, Leo – age 90, of Stewiacke, passed away on Sept 26, 2021 in Northwood, Dartmouth. He was born to Archibald and Anne (Turner) Gay. Leo lived in Dartmouth until 1987 before moving to MacPhee’s Corner with the love of his life, his wife, Rose. There they built a house on the same land as his camp where he spent most of his spare time during hunting season.

Leo was a painter by trade and spent a good portion of his career working at Shearwater Base. He loved a good cup of coffee and driving around counting the deer with Rose. He also took great pleasure in roping his grandchildren into helping him split and stack fire wood but rewarded them by taking them to see those “lazy cows”. For the past few years he loved being chauffeured around on road trips to see the sites.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Darrell (Laurie), Truro; Barbie (Ray), Lake Charlotte; Kelly (Scott), Dartmouth; Cindy (Russell), Stewiacke; Phil, Ostrea Lake: Karen (Norman), Lakeside; Ken (Paula), Porter’s Lake; Bill, Dartmouth and Dwight (Angela), Winnipeg. His many grandchildren, Mike, Matthew, Lindy, Brad, Chris, Katie, Neil, Britney, Peter, Karley, Russell, Casey, Bobby, Daphnee, Victoria, Andrew, Michelle, Ryan, Jamie, Azrael, Katie and Laila will remember all the fond memories with their Papa.

Besides his parents, Leo was predeceased by his brothers, Bernard, George and Charles; and sisters, Adele, Janette, Joyce and June; step-son, Vern (Sue), PEI; and grandson Marty, PEI.
