Lawrence Hugh Butcher

Butcher, Lawrence Hugh – Age 79, passed away at his home in Chaswood, on August 24, 2023, surrounded by loved ones, after a short battle with cancer.

Lawrence was born in Higginsville, and spent his childhood on the family farm. At a young age, he left home to work in the woods. He then spent a short time working as a mechanic but later left that field to pursue a career in carpentry. Carpentry soon became what he was most well known for. Those who knew Lawrence knew of his strong work ethic and lifelong witty sense of humour. He also had a big heart and loved helping others in the community. Lawrence loyally served on the Musquodoboit Valley Volunteer Fire Department for 33 years and was a dedicated volunteer with Musquodoboit Valley Search and Rescue for more than 30 years.

Lawrence was an avid outdoorsman with a love of nature and wildlife. As much as he loved deer hunting, he would, at times, return home without a deer. Instead, he would tell stories about how he would sit and watch them. He enjoyed going for hikes in the woods, ATV trips, bowling, playing cribbage, or spending time at his camp making maple syrup.

Lawrence is predeceased by his parents, Freeda (Fraser) and Eldridge Butcher; brothers, Lloyd and Lester; parents-in-law, Marion (Foley) and Murray Dillman; sisters-in-law, Edith Dillman and Martha (Dillman) Codner. He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Dillman); daughter, Janet; son, Glen (Sarah); grandchildren, Nicholas, Christopher, and Chloe; brothers-in-law, Max (Bernice) Dillman and Patrick Codner; and nieces and nephew, Kendra, Amy, and Murray.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Musquodoboit Valley Bicentennial Theatre on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. Drop-in is between 2 - 4 pm.

Memorial donations may be made to Musquodoboit Valley Search and Rescue or Hope for Wildlife.
