Edna “Hilda” Gammell

Gammell, Edna “Hilda” – Age 97 of Upper Stewiacke, formerly of Newton Mills and Dean, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 16, 2017 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre. The oldest resident of the area, the former Hilda Redmond was born April 5, 1920 in Dean, daughter of the late Alfred and Edith (McIvor) Redmond.

Surviving are her children, Jean (Doug) Keddy, Dean; Thelma (Keith) Blaikie, Dartmouth; Jim (Maureen), Calgary, Alta.; Dave (Anna), Moncton, N.B.; and Kathleen (Don) Kennedy, Upper Stewiacke; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Pauline (Russell) Dean, Manitouwadge, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Hazel Redmond, Ottawa, Ont.; Mary Foreman, Prince George, B.C.; Carol Chennell, Westville, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John “Jack”, and brothers, Douglas and Stewart.

Well known for her penmanship, she handwrote many wedding invitations and the history of Dean Presbyterian Church. A devoted homemaker, her life showed her firm values and many talents. Special thanks to Tammy, Phyllis and Donna.

Visitation will be Sunday, 7-9 p.m., with funeral service Monday at 2 p.m., both in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean. Burial in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Sharon Presbyterian Church, Riverside Cemetery, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
