John Stanley Lawrence

Lawrence, John Stanley - John Stanley Lawrence of Great Village, passed away on July 21, 2024 at the age of 89.

John spent the first half of his working life in the Navy which meant that he did a fair amount of travelling outside Canada. When he retired from the Navy and he was still too young to stop working so he decided he wanted to do something entirely different. He found his calling when he started working for the Colchester Library as the bookmobile driver. Dad was known for remembering a particular book that someone was searching for on a previous visit and would make note of it in a notebook and if possible, bring that book on his next visit. Up to the day he died he always carried a notebook with him jotting things down so he didn’t forget anything important. John was an active member of the Jehovah Witness congregation. He served as a ministerial servant and loved looking after the donations as well as organizing and distributing the magazines.

John was what you would call “a sports guy”. He not only loved to play sports but he also loved to watch sports. He stopped playing hockey when he was 80 and only recently gave up playing golf.

John was predeceased by his father, George; mother, Georgette; and his sisters, Edna and Patricia.

John is survived by his spouse Freda (Shay); his children, Debbie (Roy Keddy), Gary (Joy Davis), Sandy (Robert Thompson), Pamela and Gordie (April Messenger); grandchildren, Bette (Chris Geldart), Jenny (Matt McCarthy), Brittany (Josh Sroka), Tyler (Stephanie), Janelle ( Jeremy Connor), Jamie, Rachel (Josh) and Lucas; great-grandchildren, Taylor (Dee), Jordan, Mia, Kai, Cru, Ryker and Max; great great-grandchildren, Dawson and Jaxon; his only brother, Ross ( Linda) of Oshawa, Ontario; as well as many nephews and nieces.
