William "Bill" F. Jonah

Jonah, William F. “Bill” – With deep sorrow and profound gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of a beloved husband and our father, William Finlay Jonah, age 93, who peacefully departed surrounded by his devoted family on Saturday, April 20, 2024, in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Born in Norwood, Massachusetts, Bill was the cherished son of William Enoch Jonah and Ann Iris (Richardson) Jonah. After attending Agricultural College in Walpole, Mass., Bill’s family relocated to West Jeddore in 1947. There, he helped his father run the West Jeddore General Store, played baseball with the Jeddore Sharks, and met the love of his life, Dora. Through his life he worked for Westinghouse and then at St. Mary’s University until retirement in 1996.

Fond memories of time spent with Dora and friends at beachside lobster boils, at the going rate of 14¢ per lb., and lively weekend dances would often fill Bill’s conversations. Bill embraced his passions for reading, never missing his morning coffee and newspaper, playing contract bridge, spending time outdoors tending to his gardens and birdwatching, as well as the charm of watching the Jeddore Harbour tides rise and fall, with Dora always by his side.

Known affectionately as “Bill and Dora,” married on June 5, 1953, they remained inseparable until Bill’s final days. They raised their family in Dartmouth and enjoyed a close and loving marriage lasting 71 years. Bill leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished by his beloved wife and children who hold his memory dear.

Preceded in death by his parents, William and Ann; sister, Barbara Hillis; son, William Mark; and grandson, Brian.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Dora (Johns); children, Cynthia (Don) Lawson, Rosemarie (Darrell) Gallant, Charlaine (Andrew) Walsh, Greg (Michelle) Jonah, Paul (Belinda) Jonah, Dora (Vince) Conrad; as well as grandchildren, Sarah, Ryan, Mark, Lauren, Jessica, Courtney, Candace, Tiffany, Lee, Max and Victoria; and great-grandchildren, Dylan, Austin, Adriana, Jude, Parker, Everly, Mila, Ettienne and Raya.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the healthcare professionals who cared for Bill, especially Dr. Jill Lawless at Dartmouth General Hospital.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has occurred, and a private Celebration of Life will be held for family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, www.twinoakbirches.ca , or the Canadian Cancer Society, www.cancer.ca .
