Margaret "Margie" Elinor (Hutchison) MacKay

MacKay (Hutchison), Margaret “Margie” Elinor – It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Margaret “Margie” MacKay after a brief illness.

Margie was born in 1941 in Baddeck to the late Daniel and Margaret Hutchison.

In her young years, she worked at Campbell’s Market (aka Mappo’s) and was co-owner of MacKay’s Dairy in Baddeck until it was lost to a fire. In 1974 she moved with her family to Shubenacadie where her husband pursued a career in harness racing and she worked various jobs, most notably at Scott’s Restaurant in “Shubie”, as a security officer at Stanfield International Airport in Halifax and finally retiring as a receptionist at Elmsdale Animal Hospital.

Though she lived almost 50 years in Shubenacadie, Margie loved Cape Breton and visited any chance she could get. She knew so many people and wanted to know everyone, so if she didn’t know you, she’d ask you! She was always trying to win the lottery. She played many bingo sessions over the years, was known to have a roll or two on the slot machines at the gaming room and always made sure Shirley bought the 6/49 tickets on time. She won some and lost some, but she loved trying! She was quick-witted, kind, strong willed, an excellent cook and she had a great laugh that ill be dearly missed (along with her famous Strawberry Freezer Jam!).

Margie was predeceased by brothers, Joey, Johnny, David “Bubby”; sisters, Mary and Annie. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Hugh Roderick MacKay, Shubenacadie; son, Hugh Jr. (Patsy Davis); daughter, Shirley; son, David, all of Baddeck; grandchildren, Trisha (Jesus), Saskatoon; Natasha (Tim), Stewiacke, Richelle (Ryan), Mira; Keshia (Mitchell), Little Bras d’Or; special granddaughter, Alana, Truro; great-grandchildren, Dante, Alonso, Emma, Lilly, Harlee, Paisley; special great-grandchildren, Linden, Anthony, Shelby and many nieces and nephews. She loved them all dearly.

Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro and QEII, Halifax for your compassion and care and a very special thank you to Jim and Sandy Shives of Penn Hills Farm for their many years of friendship with Margie and Hughie over the years.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Shubenacadie United Church with Rev. Michael Henderson officiating.
