Carroll, Shirley Lynne, 1966-2020

Once in a short lifetime, we have the privilege of sharing our lives with a very special angel. Shirley Lynne Carroll of Clam Harbour was one of these special angels. Shirley left us peacefully in Twin Oaks Hospital on June 12, with Kenny, her husband and soul mate of 31 years by her side. She fought her four year battle with cancer with determination, humour, a “make my day” attitude and a contagious laugh that could fool just about everyone.

Her life started in Musquodoboit Harbour, the much loved daughter of Viola (Higgins) and the late George Laybolt. Sadly, Shirley leaves husband, Kenny Carroll; children, Nicholas (Kerri); and Hillary (James); granddaughters that were the center of her world, Karley Rae and Parker; and also remembering her granddaughter, Sophie, who went before her. Also surviving are, brothers, Brenton (Darlene); Keith (Wanda); Kevin (Cindy); and from afar, Sharon.

Helping others was Shirley’s passion. As a volunteer extraordinaire, she tirelessly supported Memory Lane Heritage Village, and was always on the frontlines when Mother Nature took a swing at her community. Let’s not forget her famous homemade bread, fudge and carrot cake that brought new meaning to “the loaves and fishes”. There was always enough to go around and then some.

We would like to share a special thank you to Lois, Laurena, Theresa; her “soul sisters” whom she deeply loved as her own sisters; Joan Griffin and all of the very special and dedicated doctors, nurses and support teams that cared for Shirley throughout her courageous journey.

This is not good bye. Shirley’s spirit, infectious laugh, mother hugs and welcoming smile will live on in our lives, in our days, in our nights and in our dreams. We will remember the motto she lived by - love everyone for who they are, laugh at yourself and with others and hold dear those that are special.

Finally, her belief in and love of the power of butterflies. Shirley, take our butterfly hugs to the heavens and wrap them around you. Then stir up the oceans and send the warm rains and rainbows back to us who are all so painfully missing you. Whisper I love you to a butterfly and it will fly to Heaven to deliver your message. We will love you forever and a day!

A public celebration of her life will be held June 13, 2021 at 4 p.m.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
