Blades, Ruth Ella – Age 88, of Chaswood died on December 31, 2019. Born in Chaswood, she was the daughter of the late Roy S. and Alice (McCurdy) Blades. She worked as a nanny in Halifax for 14 years for Mark and Ann Miller and their daughter Deborah. She then returned to the family home, supporting her parents and brother, Ralph until their passing. Within the Blades family and her community she was a favourite aunt to many, providing loving care to generations and a welcome home for visitors. She enjoyed many happy times in Girl Guides where she made lifelong friends. She knit many sweaters, mittens, gloves and afghans for the family and in later years numerous pairs of mittens for the East Dartmouth Christian Food Bank. She was an avid reader and a lover of country music and CBC television.
She is survived by brothers, Alvin, Middle Musquodoboit; Carl (Kathie), Port Lorne; Walter (Darlene), 150 Mile House, B.C.; Wendell (Phyllis), Chezzetcook; Keith (Nancy), Halifax; David (Alberta), Kamloops, B.C.; sisters, Pat (Weldon) Rodenhiser, Dartmouth; Kathryn (Michael) Barbour, Halifax; Norma (Ralph) Higgins, Dartmouth; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Bill Parker, Dartmouth. She was predeceased by brothers, Ralph, Bernard, Earl; sisters, Ruby Parker, Irene Baker; brother-in-law, Bill Russell; sisters-in-law, Lorna, Marlene, Doreen, Joan; a brother and nephew in infancy; nephews, Roger Russell, Benjamin Carver; niece, Dawn Lariviere; and very special niece, Heather Blades.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 10 at 2 p.m. in Middleton United Church, Middle Musquodoboit, with Calvin Burt student minister officiating. A reception will follow downstairs in the church.
A private family burial will be held in Gay’s River Cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation-Braeside Nursing Home or Hospital. The family would like to extend thanks to the homecare team and Braeside Nursing Home and Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital for their excellent care of Ruth.
