William Colin “Bill” Walker

Walker, William Colin “Bill” – It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William “Bill” Walker on November 14, 2016, passing from this world to the next, at home, wrapped in the arms of his loving family. Bill was the only child of the late James and Emma (Booth) Walker; he was 84.

Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Florence (Mowatt); his sons, Dale (Pearl), Royce (Donna), both of Cole Harbour. Bill had tremendous love for his grandchildren, Craig Walker (Michelle), Terri Kaye, Tanya Walker, Alexander Walker, Kelsey Walker, Emma Walker; as well as his great-grandchildren, Kyla, Ava and Austin Kaye, and Lily and Allie Walker.

Bill and Florence raised their family in Woodlawn, where they had been long-time members of Woodlawn United Church. They had celebrated their 62nd anniversary in March.

Bill enjoyed a 39 year career with Imperial Oil, beginning at a young age on the tankers, and transferring to the Dartmouth Refinery in April 1952. His career progressed in the Utility Plant, where through the years he shared his knowledge and skill with his coworkers, and completed his career in 1987 as “Chief”. Following a brief retirement, Bill began a second career as a consultant in the steam industry, working first for Maynard Reece, and then Preston Phipps.

In the early 1970s with the support of the Imperoyal Esso Club, Bill helped organize an annual Christmas party for the residents at the Children’s Training Center in Woodside. When the supports for the clients shifted to Dartmouth Adult Services Center (DASC Industries), Bill continued his support, giving more than 40 years of service to people with special needs.

Bill’s interests included many outdoor activities, projects in his garage workshop and his greenhouse and garden. He shared these pastimes with his family and lifelong friends resulting in many cherished stories of adventures and “misadventures” over the years. In the process he passed on his love for the outdoors, the ocean and other activities to his family.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Friday from 1-3 and 7-9 p.m., in the Woodlawn United Church Annex. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, at 10 a.m., in the church, with Rev. Valerie Kennedy officiating. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Bill may be made to DASC Industries, 59 Dorey Ave., Dartmouth, NS B2B 0B2 or Woodlawn United Church, 54 Woodlawn Rd., Dartmouth, NS B2W 2S1.

Thank you to the many family and friends who visited or called Bill at home during his illness. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Westphal PharmaChoice for your help over the years, the staff at Parkland at The Lakes for making “home” special, the wonderful VON nurses who helped Bill and Florence, Dr. B.
