Benjamin Ward Clattenburg

Clattenburg, Benjamin Ward - On October 16th, 2023 our precious son was taken from us, much too soon. He was our miracle child! Ben grew up in Elmsdale and Fall River and then spent his high school years in Qatar, attending Qatar Canadian School. During the Qatar years he developed many new friendships that endured throughout his life. Also, while in Qatar, Ben got to travel and have some amazing experiences - touring the pyramids of Egypt, snorkeling in the Red Sea, floating effortlessly in the saline waters of the Dead Sea and scaling the 900 stone steps in Petra on a donkey. Ben enjoyed playing hockey but his real passions were martial arts, boxing and going to the gym.  After the Middle East, Ben did heavy equipment operator training in Alberta and then worked various jobs here in his home province for Brinks, Moose River Goldmines and most recently at the Halifax Shipyard for MacKinnon & Olding. During slow times at the Shipyard Ben would often take work with a roofing company.

Ben is survived by his loving parents, Ward and Crystal; Nanny and Grampy (Liz & Dugal) Prest; aunts, Shauna (Jackie) Higgins, Elaine Clattenburg; and uncles, Wade (Judy) Clattenburg, Jimmy (Ruby) Clattenburg and Colin Josey. Although an only child Ben was showered with love from his many cousins. He was predeceased by Nana and Papa (Tina & Jim) Clattenburg; aunts, Aileen Prest Josey, Siggy Clattenburg; and uncle, Peter Clattenburg.

We are broken beyond words, fighting this pain, knowing that Ben would want us to carry on. A service will be held at 2 pm, Tuesday, October 24th in St. Thomas Church, Mooseland, followed by a reception in Mooseland Community Centre.

Ben, our sweetheart, you will be dearly remembered and sadly missed by your family and friends!

In lieu of flowers, cards or gifts please express condolences to our family and honour our beloved Ben with donations to the Freedom Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Carolyn "Lynn" Margaret Dodsworth

Dodsworth, Carolyn “Lynn” Margaret – With heavy hearts and great sadness, we announce the passing of Lynn Dodsworth at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre on October 12, 2023 after a very short battle with cancer. Lynn was a lifetime resident of Great Village. She was well known in Great Village and surrounding communities for her friendliness, kindness, and sense of humour. She was often the first person to welcome a newcomer to the community, offer a favour, or help someone in need. Never one to miss a party, Lynn was also very fond of a good red wine. She and Mark were strong supporters of the SLTGA Snowmobile Club. Lynn thoroughly enjoyed snowmobiling and all sorts of winter activities, which is likely the reason she was always wishing for snow.

Lynn is survived by her partner, Mark Murphy; her children, Peter and his son, Ronin (Ronin’s Mom Jordanna Griffin); Rebecca (Cole Miller); Daniel (Madison Rushton); Maggie (Evan Keddy); Caitlyn Stoddart (Dave Stoddart); Brennan Murphy; and Cassandra Murphy (Brandon McNutt and daughter Maia). Her children and grandson were the light of her life. Also survived by her mother, Patricia Dodsworth; brother, Vince Chapman; sister, Lisa Gill; as well as many much-loved aunts, uncles and cousins. She had the good fortune during her life to be blessed with amazing friends, the kind to last a lifetime. For sure she will not be forgotten. Lynn is also survived and will be missed by her faithful companion, Kitana (Kat Dog) and her chickens which she truly loved.

Lynn was predeceased by her father, Peter Dodsworth, who she missed dearly until the day she died, as well as her special, Cousin Cathy Evans.

A Celebration of Lynn’s Life will be held Sunday, October 29, 2023, from 1 - 4pm at The Great Village Art and Entertainment Centre, 8729 Nova Scotia Trunk 2, Great Village. Parking at the Great Village Legion (parking lot behind Legion building across the street).

LOOK FOR ME IN RAINBOWS

Time for me to go now.  I won’t say goodbye:

Look for me in rainbows, way up in the sky.

In the morning sunrise when all the world is new.

Just look for me and love me

As you know I loved you.

Time for me to go now.  I won’t say goodbye:

Look for me in rainbows, way up in the sky.

In the evening sunset

When all the world is through,

Just look for me and love me

And I’ll be close to you.

It won’t be forever.  The day will come and then

My loving arms will hold you

When we meet again.

Time for us to part now, we won’t say goodbye:

Look for me in rainbows, shining in the sky.

Every waking moment and

All your whole life through

Just look for me and love me

As you know I loved you.

Just wish me to be near you

And I’ll be there with you.

Stanley Brian Kempton

Kempton, Stanley Brian – passed away on October 6, 2023. Brian was born in Yarmouth County to Stanley and Kay (Harlow) Kempton. He was the youngest of four siblings, all predeceased; Kendall (Verda), Jordan (Shirley) and Kaye (Gary Weese.)

He had a fun and rambunctious youth. He was nick-named “Turk” by his rugby team, played badminton, obtained his sea plane private pilot licence in 1951, rode and tinkered with his motorcycle and spent hours dutifully polishing his dad’s police uniform boots. He carried on with that kind of detailed maintenance and repair of his homes and gardens the rest of his life. Brian married home-town beauty and smart-as a-whip Sally Pinkney when they were twenty-one and twenty-two. He worked at the bank and they moved several times throughout NS as Dad’s career progressed. They transferred to St. John’s, NF where they had son and daughter, Steven and Tami (Maurizio Braggio). His fond memories of good friends and fishing and camping there never faded. In 1968, Brian moved his family to Pointe Claire in Montreal where he succeeded as International Sales Manager for NCR. He was a great dad, encouraging his children in sports, and school and providing for a beautiful home environment. He also looked mighty fine in his 70’s era sear sucker suit, tie and polished shoes. Sally and Brian helped with coaching and managing sports teams, attended school and church meetings, and shared a wonderful community life with neighbours on Alston Street. He was skip of his curling team before he ruined his knee jumping over a fence while playing hide and seek with us kids. Brian moved his family back to NS in 1979 where he and Sally became award winning real estate agents until Sally’s death in 2012. Their attention to detail, super-human work ethic and sincere empathy for their clients was their key to success. Both he and Sally loved Nature and all its creatures and created heavenly gardens at home for birds, butterflies, deer, bears and other critters. They helped with a stray cat issue by paying to spay and neuter, foster and adopt out hundreds of kittens and cats over their last decade in Lakelands, Hants Co. Rescued Rag doll cat, Oliver, was Brian’s constant companion for twenty years. Brian was a superb cook and his French onion soup and homemade rappie pie was a reason never to miss dinner. A good feed of clams and lobster always made his eyes sparkle. His last years were rife with medical issues but he marched on, seemingly indestructible at times, out of love for his children, and especially his granddaughters whom he adored, Stephanie and Marine Robertson Kempton. Brian was an avid fan of the Montreal Expos, Montreal Canadiens, Maritime curling teams, European soccer (Man U) and was an animated and vocal armchair athlete! He had great stories to tell and loved a good laugh, often at his own expense. Brian went to sleep peacefully Friday morning after battling progressive cancer and heart disease. He will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, son-in-law, and remaining family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. There will not be a service, but donations to an animal shelter of your choice or to Bide Awhile shelter in Halifax. in his name would be most appreciated.

Stanley Leo Baker

Baker, Stanley Leo – We are very sad to announce that the world has lost the one and only Stanley Leo Baker. Stan passed away October 6, 2023, following a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. The love of his life, his daughter, Samantha, was by his side.

Snap was born in 1960. He spent most of his life in East Jeddore (God’s Country), working at Baker’s Point Fisheries. Despite his affliction for sea sickness, Snap had a fascination with the fishing life, and loved a big feed of seafood. He could always be found talking to the plants in his hot house, meticulously maintaining something he may or may not use for the next 10 years, or if it was 6pm - cursing at the news.

Stan the Man would have given most people the shirt from his back. Always the life of the party, he was never one to turn down a dance. His silly faces, prankster ways, and big heart will be greatly missed.

Papa is survived by his partner, Sadie (yep, his dog); daughter, Sam (John); grandchildren, Alex (Brandon), Kyle, Emma, and his partner in crime, Mila; great-grandchildren, Bella, Eli, and Arlo; loving siblings, Sylvia (Ernie), Wayne (Cindy), and Michael (Donna). As a young woman Mum was a teacher in a one room school, first in Higginsville and then in Murchyville where she met her husband, Burnham. It was here that they chose to live and raise their family.  Over the years Mum took much pleasure in her role as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her family meant everything to her and she had a way of making everyone feel special.

Mum was a member of the Middleton United Church, a Sunday school teacher and a lifetime member of the UCW. Mum had a deep faith and enjoyed weekly Bible studies.  She also volunteered with the Meals to Wheels program.

Mum spent many enjoyable hours tending her flower and vegetable gardens. She was also a keen birdwatcher and especially enjoyed hummingbirds. Her other hobbies were knitting, sewing, embroidery, quilting and reading.  She taught many of her grandchildren to knit and was known for knitting sweaters, mittens and socks for her family. She liked to do crosswords, sudoku and jigsaw puzzles and enjoyed playing scrabble and other board games with her family. In the past few years, she began to learn to do puzzles on her iPad and eventually moved to being able to FaceTime with family members. Mum has kept a daily journal of her life for the past 38 years.

Mum was a great listener, easy to talk with and visiting with her was always enjoyable. Mum will be deeply missed by all of us.

A special thank-you to the staff at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre; Dr. Barry Giffin and Dr. Karen Day of the Musquodoboit Valley Family Practice, and the Northwood home care staff for their compassionate care. Jean Peckford

Peckford, Jean – Jean would like to let everyone know that on September 25, 2023, she joyfully accepted a new assignment that was too good to pass up. This promotion comes with a new home and fantastic benefits, such as reunions with long lost family members, including her mom, Eileen; her dad, Bill; her brother, Jack; her sister-in-law, Ann; and her life-long “partner in crime”, her Aunt Eileen.  A sign-on bonus of seeing old friends and getting to cuddle long-missed puppies is also included. She is looking forward to walking the beaches, tending flower gardens, being without pain, and basking in the light and love of the God she loves so much.

Jean had a very active life enjoying swimming, cross country skiing, camping, gardening, visiting with friends, and she loved spending time outdoors. She was active with several animal rescue groups, 537 Air Cadet Squadron, Brownies, Guides, and volunteered at several nursing homes over the years. She also cherished the time she spent in her church.

Jean’s greatest love in her life was her family. She lived to make life full of love and fun for her daughters, and later for their many friends who became her “adopted children”. Whether making blanket tents, camping, cooking over a campfire, or holding special event parties, Jean gave her all to those she loved.

Left to celebrate her life are her husband, Bill Peckford “Boot”; her daughters, Amy Murray and Tiffany Percey; and her much loved family: The Murray Clan - Tony, Shawn, Raymond, Thomas, Emily, Sadie, and Angus; The Percey Clan - Chris, Denison, and Kenna; siblings, Ken Raymond, and Brenda Geange; in-laws, Loraine and Hubert Rowe, Pamela Peckford, Karen and Brian Mills, Joanne and Brian Davidson, Arthur and Lynn Peckford, as well as a great many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jean’s family will be getting together to remember her life on September 26, 2023 in the Elmsdale Fire Hall from 5 to 8 pm. All are welcome to pop in for a sociable, a snack, and a chat.

No flowers by request.  Instead, donations may be made to the SPCA or food bank of your choice.
