Larry Fenton Turner

Turner, Larry Fenton – Age 73 of Carrolls Corner, passed away August 22, 2018, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Clifford and Margaret (Isenor) Turner.

Surviving are his wife, the former Sharon Akerley; sons, Jim (Deanna), Sean (Terri); grandchildren, Jordan and Kodi; sisters, Irene (Dan) MacPhee, Marilyn Doncaster; brother, Carmen.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Shubenacadie, Benny Isenor presiding.

Norma Teresa (Whalen) Cox

Cox (Whalen), Norma Teresa – of Truro. Our beloved wife, mother and Mémé passed away on August 20, 2018, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. She was raised in Chéticamp and Glace Bay and valued her Acadian roots.

She was a member of the Truro Tennis Club, the Truro Hospital Auxiliary, the Catholic Women’s League and was an avid bridge player. She also had a fulfilling professional life and was a wonderful role model and mentor.

She will be dearly missed by her husband of 65 years, Alfred; her children, Corinne (John Dicks), Curtis (Gosia Szczesny), Robert, Jeffrey (Karen Stilwell) and Gregory; as well as her grandchildren, Matthew and Gregory Dicks and Jon-Luc MacQuarrie-Cox, who embody her legacy of kindness and generosity.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A memorial reception will be held on Saturday, September 8, from 1-3 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, McCarthy Hall, Truro. Rest in peace, Mémé.

Albert Newton Flemming - Service Announcement

Flemming, Albert Newton – Passed away July 17, 2018. Albert was the eldest son of the late George and Pansy (Zwicker) Flemming.

Al is survived by his wife, Cathy (Hill); his children, Francine Flemming, Bert (Valerie), Jennifer Hubley (Todd), Sandra Flemming; his precious grandchildren, Jessica Rines, Janisha Flemming, Mason Flemming, Megan Hubley, Zwicker Flemming, Vivian Flemming; his beloved sister, Coreen Flemming (Frances Aspinall); his uncle, Marlin Zwicker (Ruth); his nieces, nephews and cousins. Al was predeceased by his brother, Darrell; sister-in-law, Vivian; his first wife, Gloria Bushie.

Al’s early schooling in Shubenacadie was followed by King’s College in Windsor where his mom sent him in hopes that he would aspire to a career – anything but truck driving. His mother’s influence as municipal clerk and his service as a page-boy at the provincial legislature left him with a love of politics. A two-year stint in the air force and bookkeeping for Elm Avenue Dairy were both left for mechanics and driving a truck. He lived in Ontario and Alberta in the 1960’s before he settled again in Nova Scotia. Al worked for Day & Ross for 22 years in various positions, ending his career as an owner-operator for Same Day Courier on the bank run.

After retirement, he picked up his interest in politics as a Councillor for the Municipality of East Hants for two terms, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Al was also active in his community in Scouting, Lions Club, Shubenacadie Legion, Truro Transportation Club, Preeper Hill Cemetery and Shubenacadie United Church, where he was a lifelong member. Al built his dream cottage, the “A”, at Petpeswick Inlet, Musquodoboit Harbour. Many, many nails and a level were his credo. He repaired canoes and built a cedar strip canoe for Coreen. Adventurous trips followed for many summers. Albert was a man of few words. His gruff exterior covered his tender feelings for his kids and grandkids. His wife cherishes all the memories. He will be missed.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Visitation will be held at noon on Saturday, August 18, with Legion service, Lions tribute and Celebration of Life beginning at 1 p.m., all in Shubenacadie United Church, Rev. Martin Reid officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Donations may be made to Shubenacadie United Church or Shubenacadie Legion.

Robert Oswald “Bob” Mosher

Mosher, Robert Oswald “Bob” – Age 71, of Musquodoboit Harbour, passed away on August 16, 2018, in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Oswald and Frances (Gaetz) Mosher.

Bob retired as manager of financial services at NSAC. He was an avid sailor, enjoyed golfing, and duck hunting with his partner, Abe. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida.

Surviving are his partner, Raelee; sister, Nancy (Leo Brough); brother-in-law, Gordon Finley; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Carolyn.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Tuesday, at 2 p.m. in St. Thomas Anglican Church, Musquodoboit Harbour, Rev. Marilyn Murphy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Anglican Church.

Kevin R. Thomas

Thomas, Kevin R. – Age 65 of Wolfville, passed away in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, on August 15, 2018, due to complications with diabetes and lungs. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Stanley and Mary (Dickie) Thomas.

Surviving are his sons, Peter, C.J. (Danielle), Jeff (Nicholle); daughter, Didi (Jason); grandchildren, Dylan, Owen, Benjamin, Theodore, Gabriel and Eleanor; brother, Verne (Sharon), sister, Bonnie (Dave). He was predeceased by brother, Laurie; sister, Heather Cook.

Kevin became well known when he first joined the Wolfville Police Department in 1977, and later when he joined the RCMP, retiring from there in 2007. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman throughout the Musquodoboit Valley. He will be greatly missed by colleagues, family and good friends.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in St. James United Church, 4217 Hwy. 357, Meaghers Grant, Rev. Dr. Linda Yates officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada.

Harold Earl Power

Power, Harold Earl – Age 68, of Musquodoboit Harbour. It is with broken hearts that we said goodbye on August 13, 2018 to a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son and friend.

Harold’s career had always been on the water through Department of Transportation boats, BIO boats, oil rigs, gypsum boats, and lastly a pusher tug on the Great Lakes. He especially loved his time on the Petite Forte. Harold played sports, especially baseball in his younger days, and also enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. Music was a big part of his life and his guitar was usually within reach. He played in the band “Live Wire” with his friends. His morning coffee with “the guys” was a ritual.

He will always be missed by his wife of over 50 years, Lynn; daughter, Kristen (Robert) Clarke; grandchildren, Colleen and Katelyn; brother, Randy (Barb). He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Elsie Power; son, Todd.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Jeddore Baptist Church, Pastor Aubrey Deslatte officiating, followed by a reception downstairs. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Betty L. (Poteri) Findlay

Findlay (Poteri), Betty L. – Age 86, of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on August 11, 2018.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Elaine (Donnie) Whitenect, Susan Lillico; son, Stuart (Michelle) Poteri; brother, Dean; sisters, Shirley (Lyall) Kaulbach, and Sharon McRae. She was a loving grandmother of Jason, Jennifer, and Bradley; great-grandmother of Jeremy, Sophia, Davrine, Ethan, Emmett, and Fynn. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Arnold and Gertrude Stewart; husband, Delton Findlay; sister, Marie; grandson, Dean; son-in-law, Dwight.

Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Betty’s wishes there will be a private graveside service. Memorial donations may be made to The Lung Association Nova Scotia or Canadian Cancer Society.

Many thanks to the Northwood Homecare workers and Dr. Barry Giffin for helping Mom stay in her home during her final battle.

Reginald Austin Farnell

Farnell, Reginald Austin – Age 100, of Onslow Mountain and formerly of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away August 6, 2018 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Upper Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Austin and Anna (Connor) Farnell.

Reg was a veteran of the Second World War having served overseas, he was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Valley Branch #147, Elm Lodge #115, and a member of St. James United Church, Upper Musquodoboit.

Surviving are son, Ray (Karen), Onslow Mountain; daughters, Margaret (Joe) Archibald, Stewiacke; Rita (Bill) Whitney, Texas; grandchildren, Joseph, Douglas, Derek, Leah, Will, Max; great-grandchildren, Austin, Alden, Meah; brother, Eric, Welland, Ontario. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Kent); siblings, Earle, Marion, Hazel, Gordon “Bub”, Louise.

Visitation will be Sunday in St. James United Church from 6-8 p.m. starting with a Legion service followed by a Masonic tribute. Funeral service will be on Monday at 2 p.m., also in St. James United Church, with Rev. Alice Rutherford officiating. 

Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit. Memorial donations may be made to St. James United Church, Royal Canadian Legion Valley Branch 147, Upper Musquodoboit, or Elm Lodge #115, Upper Stewiacke.

June Frances Lively

Lively, June Frances – Age 83, of Elmsdale, passed away August 5, 2018 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Oldham, she was a daughter of the late Warren and Dorothy (Graham) Cole.

She was an amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great great- grandmother and will always be loved and missed by children, Ronnie, Betty, Terry, Mary Lynn; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; sister and favourite bingo partner, Marjorie; brothers, Bobby, Danny, Leo; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by husband, James; daughter, Linda; son-in-law, Doug; brothers, George, Gerald, Arthur, Cyril, Pat.

Visitation will be Tuesday, 6-8 p.m., and funeral service Wednesday, at 3:30 p.m., both in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Enfield, Father Michael Walsh officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to IWK Health Centre Foundation.

Lauren “Christine” Sanderson

Sanderson, Lauren “Christine” – Age 65, of Crowes Mills, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on August 4, 2018, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, following a courageous battle with cardiac disease.

Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Naomi (Higgins) Betts.

Christine had several professions over the years, teaching preschool in Great Village and Bible Hill, and later owning her own cafe in Barrie, Ontario. While living in Wasaga Beach, Christine was very active in the community offering her spare time caring for palliative patients, and driving them to medical appointments. After moving back to Nova Scotia in 2010, Clayton and Christine enjoyed several years travelling and spending winters in Texas and Florida.

Christine leaves behind her husband, Clayton; children, David, Tammi, Kerri-Ann, Robert; step-daughter, Pamela MacKinley; grandchildren, Ryan, Brody, Jimmy, Jessica and Julien.

Cremation has taken place. In honoring Christine’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family interment will be held at a later date in Mahon Cemetery, Great Village, with Rev. Glenn MacLean officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Diabetes Association of Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or The Kidney Foundation of Canada.

William Alexander “Bill” Duncan - Burial Announcement

Duncan, William Alexander “Bill” – Age 66 of Truro, passed away July 16, 2018, at home. Born in Truro, he was one of 11 children of the late Allister Duncan and Ruby Tucker, and was raised by his foster parents, John and Gladys Creelman.

Bill had been employed in the forestry industry as a labourer. During the last few years he was unable to work due to a back injury and other illnesses.

Surviving are daughter, Sonya Peterson, Camrose, Alta.; grandchildren, Riley, Emma-Lynn; several brothers and sisters. He was predeceased by son, Jamie; granddaughter, Tanisha; sister, Mary.

Cremation has taken place. All are welcome to attend the burial on Friday, August 3rd at 1 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Roland Gauthier

Gauthier, Roland – Age 66 of Dutch Settlement, passed away peacefully August 1, 2018, after a four-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Roland was born in Tofield, Alberta, second son of Lloyd and Maria Gauthier.

Roland was an avid curler and enjoyed the odd game of golf. He was a mechanic by trade and spent many years as a small engine/motorcycle and online automotive instructor at NSCC where he was well-liked by his students and co-workers. He enjoyed working on Superbikes and took great pride in making them go as fast as possible.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; his son and daughter-in-law, Jason Olney and Dawn Dartt; granddaughter, Lori Olney; his older brother, Jerry Gauthier (Brenda) of Kelowna, B.C.

Cremation has taken place. At Roland's request there will be no funeral.

The family would like to thank all of the wonderful people in the health care community and our neighbours for their well wishes and support.

Bernard Robert Graves

Graves, Bernard Robert – of Stewiacke, passed away August 1, 2018, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Ingramport, he was a son of the late Robert and Minnie Graves.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel; daughter, Janice (Norm); son Bernie; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Helen; brother, Gordon. He was predeceased by daughter, Nancy Lynn; brothers, Charles, George, Murray, Scott, and Rodney; sister, Mady.

Burial will be held at a later date.

Carl Francis Higgins

Higgins, Carl Francis – Age 95 of Wittenburg, passed away July 31, 2018 in Braeside Home for Special Care, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Lindsay Lake, he was a son of the late Clarence and Annie (Reid) Higgins.

Carl retired from a career of lumbering and road construction. He was the last member of his immediate family.

Surviving are daughters, Linda, Donna, Carla, Gloria, Sheila, Darlene; sons, Richard, Reginald, Timothy, John; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Vera (Smith); daughters, Dixie, Debbie; sons, Allison, Darrell; brothers, Lealand, Lyman, Duncan, Austin; half-brother, Chester; sisters, Nellie, Jennie, Ruby, Audrey in infancy.

Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Carl’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Wittenburg. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

John Wayne O’Shaughnessy

O’Shaughnessy, John Wayne – It is with heavy hearts that we announce John’s passing on July 30, 2018, at the age of 61, with his loving wife and family by his side. John was a son of Rita (Graves) Kinney, Lucasville, and the late Kenneth O’Shaughnessy.

John worked for many years for Bob’s Taxi in Dartmouth, retiring from Halifax Stanfield Airport as a commissionaire in 2013. Those who knew John will remember his love of wrestling, or men in tights as he was so often teased about, his weekend card games spent with family while making sure everyone knew he had the best partner because the girls could never beat them. Most important to him was his life with Peggy, his family and his pets.

John is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 24 years, Peggy (Fraser); stepsons, Terry (Sheryl) Decker, Middle Musquodoboit; Kevin (Darnell) Decker, Alberta; stepgrandchildren, Kaleigh Hood (Tim), Kenneth Hood (Katie), both of Shubenacadie; Kendra Hood (Justin), Lanesville; Phoenix Decker, Middle Musquodoboit; siblings, Ethel (Reg) Nauss, Lunenburg; Gord (Cathy) O’Shaughnessy, Bridgewater; Anne O’Shaughnessy, Chester; stepsister, Beverly (Allan) Clay, Sackville; sister-in-law, Donna (Ken) Wambalt, Dartmouth; Cindy Beeler, Texas; Laura Romkey (Cor), Teresa “Terry” (Randy) Rossiter; brothers-in-law, Glen (Kim) Fraser, Robbie (Tamie) Taylor, all of Middle Musquodoboit; several nieces and nephews. Steven Joseph McNeil

McNeil, Steven Joseph – Age 55 of Stewiacke, passed away unexpectedly at home on July 28, 2018. Born in Toronto, he was a son of Gwen McNeil, North Bay, Ont., and the late Joseph McNeil.

Steve had been a member of Cooks Brook Fire Department for a number of years. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, whether it was fishing or working in the woodlot. His grandchildren were an important part of his life and he enjoyed every moment spent with them.

Steve was the best husband, father, grandfather and friend, and will always be loved and missed by wife, Chryle (Ruggles); children, Ryan, Brent, Aaron, all of Ontario; Trev (Morgan), Port Dufferin; Jennifer (Matthew Sanford), Brandon (Victoria Works), both of Stewiacke; grandchildren, Lily, Raeleen, Ryker, Auna, Nash, Edwin; three siblings in Ontario. He will be missed by his fur baby, Sam. He was predeceased by stepfather, Bill Sloan.

Elizabeth Anne Flora (Dunn) MacLeod

MacLeod (Dunn), Elizabeth Anne Flora – 1960-2018. Elizabeth Anne Flora MacLeod “Liz” of Reid Station Road, Meadowvale, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 10:44 a.m., in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, after a courageous fight. As she wished, she was surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her mother, Hazel, Truro; son, Peter, British Columbia; daughter, Anna, South Branch; brothers, Grant, Yarmouth; Greg, Moncton; sister, Esther (Vernon), Stewiacke; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Peter.

Liz was employed as a comptroller for the majority of her life, most recently at Leisure Days in Truro. She was always willing to open her door to any person or four-legged creature, with a meal and an ear to listen. She had many lifelong friends who span across the country. Her love toward her children, family members, nature and animals will be her legacy.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 29 from 1-4 p.m. in Middle Stewiacke Recreation Centre (formerly Middle Stewiacke Elementary). A private family burial will take place in Middle Stewiacke Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local SPCA.

Rex Tasker

Tasker, Rex – of Musquodoboit Harbour, died peacefully at his home on July 24, 2018. Rex was born at Hertford, England, in 1933, and grew up in Devonshire. After attending school in London he served his two years of national service with the Intelligence Corps in Germany and after demobilization studied film at the Heatherley School of Fine Arts (later known as the London Film School). He also participated in the free cinema movement which saw film as a stimulus for social change.

He married June Mary Hudgell in 1956 and in 1958 emigrated to Canada with a strong desire to work at the National Film Board of Canada, whose first commissioner had been John Grierson, one of the fathers of documentary film.

He worked at the National Film Board from 1960 until 1992 – the first 12 years at the Board’s headquarters in Montreal where he was a picture editor, researcher, writer, director and producer. The many films he worked on won over 40 major awards, including an Oscar nomination for “Helicopter Canada”, seven different awards, including one for editing “Fields of Sacrifice" and Moscow 1967 and Berlin 1968 awards for “The White Ship”, an International Labor Film Festival award for “Steeltown” and the 1971 Canadian Film Award for “The Oshawa Kid”. He personally rated "The White Ship" and "Steeltown" as his best films. During this period he also worked on a Challenge for Change project in Thunder Bay to establish community video production, and taught film at Stanford University, California; New York University, the University of Toledo, Ohio; and Florida State University.

In 1973 he and his then wife, Shelagh Mackenzie, came to Nova Scotia to set up the Film Board’s Atlantic Centre – the aim of which was to develop local filmmakers and film-making institutions. For this he was awarded, in 1980, the John Grierson Genie Award for “contribution to Canadian Film in the spirit and tradition of John Grierson”, and in 1987 the Atlantic Festival CBC Pioneer award for “contribution to film in Atlantic Canada”.   In 1982, the Rex Tasker award for “the best documentary film made in the region in the previous year” was established at the Annual Atlantic Film Festival. After retirement in 1992,  he worked on what he called “community videos” – small one-man productions – the  first looking at a successful fishing cooperative in Belize and then videos for organizations concerned with the deaf, blind and disabled in St. Lucia. Later on he made videos concerned with local Nova Scotia people and the history of the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, where he had lived for over 40 years.

He is survived by his partner of over 30 years, Ria Hodgson (nee Berkelaar); and his daughter, Katharine Tasker, by his first marriage, of Northern France.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. An open house will be held for family and friends on Sunday, July 29th, from 1-4 p.m. at his beloved Clam Factory, 1134 Ostrea Lake Rd., Musquodoboit Harbour.

Evangeline Mae “Vangie” Langille

Langille, Evangeline Mae “Vangie” – Age 77 of Truro, passed away on July 23, 2018, at home, surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Pansy (Ettinger) McCallum.

She loved spending time with her family, friends near and far, and her four-legged pets. Vangie enjoyed bingo, camping, reading, and working in her flower gardens.

She will always be loved and missed by her loving husband of 60 years, Robert “Bob”; children, Kathy (Karen Mills), Bible Hill; Bobby (Joan), Tatamagouche; Michelle (Tony) Richards, Onslow Mountain; grandchildren, John (Barya), Adam (Rhian), both of Alberta; Holly (Chris), Prince Edward Island; great-grandchildren, Soraya, Brin, Lucas, and Jade; sisters, Violet, Gerry, Fern, Diane, Bonnie, Iris; and bother, Butch. She was predeceased by brother, Ivan.

Cremation has taken place. All are welcome to attend a graveside service on Saturday, July 28th, at 11 a.m. in Bible Hill Cemetery, with Rev. Donna Lawrence officiating. A celebration of her life will follow in Bible Hill Fire Hall from 12-2 p.m. Family flowers only, please. Memorial donations to Canadian Cancer Society or SPCA would be appreciated.

Mary Catherine Cook

Cook, Mary Catherine – Age 91 of Middle Musquodoboit, passed away July 10, 2018, in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital. Born in Centre Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Laura (Eisan) Kent.

Mary spent many years of her life as a volunteer for which she received many awards. She was a charter member of Middleton UCW where she held various offices. She was a member and honourary elder of Middleton United Church. In 2011, she was Fair Person of the Year at the Halifax County Exhibition. She was treasurer of Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Healthcare Auxiliary, was secretary of Enterprisers 50 Plus Club, and treasurer of Musquodoboit Valley Canadian Diabetes Association.

Mary was a loving, inspiring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will always be loved by daughters, Laura (Randy) Saueracker, Edmonton, Alta.; Jessie Henneberry, Montague, P.E.I.; grandchildren, Jason (Ashley) Henneberry, Michelle Henneberry, Alexis (Jeff) Labrecque, Angelika Saueracker, Allie (Tyler) Potts; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Grace, Alexander, Kaiden; niece, Claire Castle; brother-in-law, Reginald Farnell. She was predeceased by her husband, John; sister, Dorothy Farnell; brothers, Arthur and James Kent; brother-in-law, Ivan (Alice) Cook; nephew, Douglas Cook.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, and funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, both in Middleton United Church, Rev. Dr. Linda Yates officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Middle Musquodoboit. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Middleton United Church, Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation or a charity of choice.
