Cole, Donald Murray “Cob” – Age 62, of Elderbank, died peacefully, July 8, 2023, in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, the result of a massive stroke.
Born in Halifax, the third son of Frank and Harriet (Dean) Cole, he was raised in Elderbank, graduated MRHS, and went right to work. He drove a truck for a number of people before becoming an owner/operator based mostly out of Regina. Three years ago he sold his truck and trailer, packed up his guitars, motorcycle and tools and moved back to Elderbank, and again got a job driving a truck. Between his first and last job there were a lot of stories, guitar playing, karaoke singing, dancing and maybe a few beer along the way. He kept in contact with many of his “trucker” friends with many lengthy conversations. He worked hard; enjoyed meeting and talking to people, and always tried to find music, good food and conversation wherever he was parked. Don got the name Cob, meaning “cheap old b…”, in grade 7 and it stuck the rest of his life. Don was a 4-H member and was proud to have the reserve champion beef calf at the first NS Provincial 4-H Show. Don played rec hockey and enjoyed the team banter. He made it sound like he was almost a star.
Don is survived by his brothers, Dean (Rita) and Dave (Helena); nieces and nephews, Sandy (Emma), children Pippa, Lauchie, Tilly; Joan; Allyson (Chad); Kyley, son Everett; Liam; Shelby (Bubba). He enjoyed his nieces and nephews, especially as they got closer to legal age. They would often stop in for a visit and refreshments and to watch CFL, Nascar, hockey or curling. He also provided lots of advice and helped fix machinery on the farms, and drove the tractor when needed. Don lived life his way.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. in Elderbank Cemetery, July 12. A reception will follow in St. Andrew’s United Church, Elderbank.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Elderbank Cemetery Commission or the Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation.
