Markovits, Barbara Ruth – Barbara Ruth Markovits, of Clam Harbour, died in hospital on October 5, 2023.
Born in Winnipeg, Barbara earned her B.A. at the University of Manitoba in 1967 and her M.Ed. at the University of Toronto in 1984. She lived in Vancouver, Jerusalem, and Toronto before settling with her husband, Henry 'Hank' Burrows, on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia in 1983. She and her soul mate, Hank, loved classical music in all its glorious variety, ocean tides, meteor showers, and Hank's garden. She was grateful to her early teachers and to her counselling clients for vital life lessons.
In Nova Scotia, she became a sturdy alto in Hank's Musical Friends Community Chorus and found her voice as an outspoken environmentalist with Eastern Shore Forest Watch. Barbara participated in a number of significant environmental initiatives, including Ship Harbour-Long Lake, Otter Ponds Demonstration Forest, halting the gold mine in Moose River, and the creation of Owl’s Head Provincial
Park. Many tributes have arrived in the last weeks thanking Barbara for her leadership and eloquent voice in these matters. She is survived by her beloved nephews, Joel Markovits (Brian Monroe) and Alan
Markovits; and grand-niece Lucia Markovits; dearest and most faithful, Sarah and Tom Burrows; cousin, Judith Hendin; and extended families and friends. Special thanks and love to Siracha Turner-Hawtin for snuggles and coffee, and to her parents, Judy Turner and Terry Hawtin. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Dr. Samuel and Dr. Molly Markovits; her brother, Ron; and by her beloved, Hank.
Barbara and Hank were fortunate to have had thirty-five years blessed with joy. The family thanks those who supported Barbara with friendship after Hank's death.
Arrangements were made with Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.
Interment was in Clam Harbour Cemetery. At Barbara's request, there was a brief graveside service on October 6, 2023.
If you would like to honour Barbara's memory, she asks that you please reach out to a loved one with whom you have not had contact in a while.
Memorial donations may be made to Eastern Shore Forest Watch, PO Box 135, Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia, B0J 2L0, or to any environmental, musical, or humane cause.
