Hutchinson (MacKichan), Katherine Mildred – Age 96, of Halifax, passed away peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on April 6, 2020. She was born at home in Cleveland, on November 7, 1923, the daughter of J. Howard and Tina (Mauger) MacKichan.
Katherine went to school in Cleveland and Arichat, and then taught at nearby St. Esprit. After completing a course of study at Empire Business College in Sydney, she began a lifetime of work in bookkeeping and accounting, first for Canadian National Railways in Sydney, and then in Halifax for United Maritime Fishermen.
In 1949, Katherine MacKichan married Jack Hutchinson of Middle Musquodoboit. After some time in Halifax, they moved to Mississauga, where she worked variously for companies selling flowers, watches, cars, and chemicals. For more than 17 years she was in charge of account operations at H.Q. Golder & Associates. Kay and Jack were active members of Bethesda of Forest Glen United Church, and she was a life member of the United Church Women.
In retirement, the Hutchinsons moved to Schooner Cove and later to Chester. They were valued members of Chester United Baptist Church, and Kay volunteered at Bonny Lea Farm. She enjoyed golfing, especially at her home club in Chester. Katherine valued family, and was a wonderful wife, sister, and aunt.
She is survived by her siblings, Jessie McCurdy, Chris Russell, and Harold MacKichan, all of Halifax; and many nieces and nephews, whom she loved as if they were her own children. Kay was predeceased by her husband, Jack in 2007; by her brothers, Ralph and Jim; and by sisters, Lillian and Jean.
The funeral will be held in Chester United Baptist Church at a future time.
