May, Phillip – Age 81 of Porters Lake. It is with heaviest hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, Dad and Pop, on July 2, 2018 at home, after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Point Rosie, Nfld., he was a son of the late Frederick and Theresa May.
Dad left home at the age of 15 to work with J.P. Porter in Halifax. He later joined the Imperial Oil team and travelled all over the world on the oil tankers, retiring after 35 years. On January 15, 1958, he married the love of his life, Bertha Grandy. Dad was a very active member of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Porters Lake, volunteered at Porters Lake Community Centre and Porters Lake Seniors’ Club. He looked forward to his crib nights with his buddies in the building, and breakfasts and drives with his friend, Ken Smith.
Besides his wife, he leaves behind his son, Darrell (Maureen MacLean) and their children Cally and Cameron; daughters, Teresa (Hal Ellis) and their son Jason; Cathy (Richard Eaglestone) and their children Brad, Jillian and Blake; Tina (Stan Betts) and her daughter Jessica Hillier. Jillian’s children, Ellie and Emma, were Dad’s little heartthrobs. He is also survived by his oldest brother, Otto; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by stepmother, Percilla; brothers, Edwin and Lawrence; grandson, Jeffrey Ellis.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Monday from 12:30-3 p.m. in Porters Lake Community Centre, 4693 Hwy. 7. A private family committal will be held at St. Mark’s Anglican Church with Rev. Evelyn Knorr officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Porters Lake.
The family would like to thank the VON team who treated Dad like he was their own family, palliative care nurse, Shannon, and Dr. Erin, who went above and beyond to look after not only Dad but also the family. Special thanks to Dr. Woliski, Dr. Caldwell and nurse, Jill.
Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
