Mabel Helen Loughead

loughead, mabel (2).jpg

Loughead, Mabel Helen – The family of Mabel Loughead announce the sudden passing of a great mother, grandmother and sister on Monday, March 29, 2021 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre at the age of 88.

Born in West St. Andrews, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Reta (Moore) Kent. Surviving are sons, Brian (Beverley), Tommy (Heather), Gary (Sherry), all of Truro; Ray, Halifax; daughters, Sandra MacKenzie (Roy), Truro; Karen Dean (Tony), Dean Settlement; sister, Helen O’Neil, Truro; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed very much by all of us.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Homer; brothers, Earl Kent, Victor Kent; sister, Carol Spencer; brother-in-law, Wayne O’Neil; sisters-in-law, Jean Kent, Linda Kent; great-grandson, Joseph; nephew, Kevin O’Neil.

Mabel worked at a number of jobs in Truro. She worked for 11 years at Kmart, and also at A. J. Walkers, Mary’s Grocery, and Zellers. She and her late husband, Homer also owned and operated their own grocery store, canteen and gas bar in Dean Settlement.

Mabel enjoyed visiting with her children and grandchildren. She also tried to have some treats available for them and loved to have the children cuddle up to her. Mabel also enjoyed going to bingo games, and loved to go to the Good Neighbors Club meetings in Truro.

During the years she lived at the apartment complex on Blanchard Avenue in Bible Hill and at Townsview Estates, she was a daily participant in the gatherings of her many friends in the common rooms. No meeting passed without her getting someone with a few zingers (particularly the men who were present). Her joy was to make people laugh. “Laughter is the best medicine” was her motto. Just before Mabel moved into Townsview Estates, her son Brian took it upon himself to warn (with a smile) one of the men who worked at Townsview Estates and was known for his fun loving zingers that he shared liberally with the residents, “You are about to meet your match!!” After 17 months of getting zinged by Mabel, we are sure he would say with a laugh, “Indeed, I did meet my match, and enjoyed every minute of it!”

In accordance with Mabel’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Because of her love for children, Mabel requested that any memorial gifts may be made to IWK Health Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Special thanks to the staff and residents in Townsview Estates for the way you loved, laughed with and looked after Mabel for the 17 months she was with you. She loved all of you and her family was blessed by the wonderful way you cared for her.

Patricia Beverley Swan

swan, pat 3.png

Swan, Patricia Beverley – Even the most indomitable of souls, the fieriest of spirits must one day return home to their Creator. Patricia Blanche Swan of East Jeddore, returned to her creator on Sunday, March 28, 2021 at the age of 81.

When Pat’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Pat was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family and friends. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She served her community through her church for many years either with prayer or a helping hand.  She always ensured that every child who crossed her path was safe, healthy, and happy.  If she was ever feeling down, all she needed to do was get a smile from a grandbaby to brighten her day.  She spent her time on this earth sipping cups of tea, creating beautiful flower arrangements, jewelry and scrapbooking.  She loved watching the birds and the flowers.  Anyone who knew Pat, knew of her love of shopping and fashion, full day shopping trips to Sears bargain basement, in her heels, Pat was always dressed to the nines, matching right down to her clip-on earrings. Pat enjoyed her visits to Chipman, NB to see her family, Wayne and Eileen Northrup, who she loved so dearly.  She was a faithful member of Marine Drive Pentecostal Church and the Senior Luncheon program for many years.  Her love for God did not go unnoticed, she was a beautiful witness to all around her always offering prayer and support.

Pat will be forever remembered by her loving husband, George, of 61 years; children, Sheila (Carl) Arnold, Shirley (Chris) Marks, Jamie (Tammie) Swan, Beverley (Gideon) Arnold; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; siblings, Elliot (April) Henry, Gerald (Donna) Henry, Evelyn Moss, Doug (Cindy) Walsh; and many beloved nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Beverly and Blanche; siblings, Pearl, Ronnie, and June.

The family would like to thank Pat’s daughter-in-law, Tammie Swan for being a wonderful blessing in caring for “Aunt Pat” over the past year, all the staff on 3rd floor at Dartmouth General and Twin Oaks Palliative Care.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative. Due to COVID-19, a funeral service by invitation only for family remembering the life of Pat will be held in Marine Drive Pentecostal Church on Thursday, April 1st at 2 p.m. The service will also be streamed on the “Marine Drive Pentecostal Church” facebook page for those who are unable to attend.  If desired, memorial donations may be made to Marine Drive Pentecostal Church or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

David James Schultz

schultz, david.png

Schultz, David James - We are heartbroken to have to announce that on March 3, 2021, shortly after puck drop, Dave passed away suddenly from an aneurysm, at the age of 61.

Dave enjoyed woodworking. He’d spend countless hours in his shed creating beautiful furniture pieces that we will cherish forever. He liked searching the internet for our next big adventure. It was often joked about how he should have been a travel agent, finding such great deals. We enjoyed a Caribbean cruise, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Everyone knows Dave’s love for the Boston Bruins. His most favourite trip was a surprise gift from our son, Cody to Boston.  The two took in a Bruins vs. Montreal game and afterwards met the players of their beloved team. Dave was still showing the pictures to anyone that would look.

Surviving are his wife and best friend, Cindy; his son and biggest joy of his life, Cody(Sarah); twin brother, Darrell and sister, Bev; brother & sister in-law, Glen and Sandy Cole. Also many loving cousins, nieces and nephews; and his furry grandkids, Chase, Carlos, Oakley, and Dusty.

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Tessie Schultz; brothers, Eddie, Wayne and Gary; and in-laws, Reg and Barb Keddy.

We know that life will never be the same, we have lost our best friend, but we will all be together again someday.  Dave will live on in the stories we tell, he always loved to tell a good story.

Albert Harold Noble

noble, albert.jpg

Noble, Albert Harold – Age 79, of Upper Nine Mile River. It is with broken hearts that we share the sudden passing of our beloved Papa on February 24, 2021.

Albert was always on the go. He looked forward to his daily drives to Elmsdale, never knowing who he may run into. He found enjoyment in the simple pleasures, like taking drives in his red truck, attending races, chatting at the garage, jamborees, making trips to Tim Hortons, shopping in Maine, family dinners, and being at the trailer where he was a long-time member of Avon Boat Club. He loved visits and drives with his family and never passed up an opportunity to recall memories from his past and share about his experiences.

Albert began working at an early age with his father in the woods, then with Major Thompson doing landscaping. He worked for Hubley’s Ready Mix, and then onto Maritime Sand and Gravel.  After these endeavors, Albert’s love for machinery continued as he bought his own dump truck and began a trucking business. He finished his career as a heavy equipment operator at the former Halifax International Airport after a cancer diagnosis in 1992.

Whether you were family, a friend, or a stranger, Albert was known for his kindness and would always stop to chat, often asking “where are you from?” He would never miss a chance to socialize which made him a friend to many.

He was a valued member of Nine Mile River Community Hall where he served as president for many years and was an active trustee for over 50 years. He was involved with the Saturday night dances, bingo and jamborees that took place in the Hall.

He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Colleen, and son-in-law, Bert, and loving grandchildren Courtney, Ashley and Brad (Miranda) all of whom he truly cherished. He is also survived by in-laws, Darlene, Myrt, Barb (Aubrey), Gaylene, Lance, Sarah and Bev; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Albert was predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Lindy (White); parents, Minard and Viola; brother, Eric; and in-laws, Rollie, Sheila, Dave and Cece.

The family would like to thank the Heart Function Clinic at the Halifax Infirmary for their dedicated care over the past four years.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in Nine Mile River Community Hall on Sunday, February 28, 2021 followed by a private funeral at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Kim Curlett officiating. Abiding by COVID-19 restrictions, masks and social distancing are required.

It wasn’t long before he joined his father, Frank, at Yould’s Stationery store and this was the start of his career that lasted for over 50 years. Dave worked in his family owned business, Yould’s Limited, until he retired. He was always the entrepreneur and had very successful businesses which resulted in many friends and acquaintances. His success in business carried over to his philanthropy and he served on many committees and community boards over the years.

Dave had an impact on all who knew him and he was known for his positivity, love of life, genuine caring and sense of humour. His biggest passion was building and creating and his biggest love was his family. Always the provider and voice of reason, Dave, above all else, was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who cared deeply and was devoted to their well being. Margaret Stewart

Stewart, Margaret Borden –  In loving memory of Margaret Borden Stewart, nee Silliker, who passed away peacefully on February 9, 2021 at the home of her oldest son, Bruce and his wife, Amy. Margaret (aka “Marg” and “Marnie”) is survived by her three boys, Bruce, Alan and Scott; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Margaret was born and raised in Amherst, Nova Scotia, one of three daughters to Isabel and Victor. She moved to Ottawa in her teens, where she graduated from nursing school and met her future husband and lifelong partner, James “Jim” Stewart. They raised their family in a wonderfully close neighborhood in Dorval, Quebec, making friendships that endured throughout their lifetimes. Marg was the community nurse for many of the neighbors even while suspending her professional career to look after her family at home. Once the boys were grown, Marg and Jim purchased a small business in Ottawa and ran it successfully until their retirement in 1991. They then returned home to Nova Scotia to care for Marg’s mother, Isabel. Upon her passing, Marg and Jim moved from Kentville to Truro to be close to Bruce and family. Margaret courageously accepted the loss of her dear husband in 2008 and determined to establish her independence.
