Erskine, Rita - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Rita Erskine at the age of 85, on Monday, Feb 8, 2021 in the Halifax Infirmary QEII, Halifax.

She was the youngest daughter of Paul and Annie (Gillard) Lilly.  She grew up on Exploits Islands, Newfoundland and throughout her life it continued to be her cherished home.

Working as a nurse in Middle Musquodoboit, Rita met her husband, John.  They raised their three children in Upper Musquodoboit.  To be closer to her growing family, Rita left the hospital and they built an addition to their home where she operated Erskine Rest Home for many years.

Rita was active in the community as a member of the local chapter of the Women’s Institute and with St. James United Church where she played the church organ for many years.  She always enjoyed the opportunity to play the old pump organ in church.  Rita also enjoyed travelling to Women's Institute conventions and with other tour groups.

After losing her only son in 1986 and John in 1993, Rita moved to Dartmouth to be closer to her girls.  This was a whole new chapter for Rita and she quickly settled into city life enjoying aqua aerobic classes at Cole Harbour Place, lawn bowling at Dartmouth Lawn Bowls Club and volunteering at Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home.  She was an avid quilter and knitter and she taught craft classes for many years.  For the last few years she enjoyed her new home on Baker Dr. where she was able to join friends for games, meals and a few laughs.

Rita is survived by her daughters, Rosalyn (David Zannie) in Dartmouth and Regina in Halifax; along with her brother, Cliff (Netta Boyd) of Lewisporte, N.L.; her sister, Mabel (Manuel) of St. John’s, N.L.; and her sisters-in-law, Louise Lilly of Halifax and Kay Lilly of Windsor, Ont. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her son, Rod at the age of 22 in 1986; and her husband, John in 1993.  She was also predeceased by her brothers, Harvey, Neil, and Claude; and her sisters, Telsie (Hoover) and Marion (Hoyles).

A celebration of Rita’s life will be held in Woodlawn United Church on Monday, February 22 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Mary Lynne Whyte officiating.  Due to COVID restrictions, attendance will be by invitation only.  There will be a live steam of the service at Woodlawn United Church via Facebook Live - https://www.facebook.com/WoodlawnUnitedChurch.  The service will also be available later through Woodlawn United Church You Tube channel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope for Wildlife.

Mary Ellen MacQuarrie

MacQuarrie, Mary Ellen – It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Ellen (McFetridge) MacQuarrie, age 87, of Middle Musquodoboit on January 18, 2021 after a brief illness.

Mary Ellen was born in Middle Musquodoboit in 1933, the youngest child and only daughter of parents, Ira and Grace (Hanna) McFetridge. She attended Horton Academy and was a proud graduate of Acadia University in 1954, where she obtained a B.A. and made many cherished lifelong friendships. She spent her university summers working in Keltic Lodge in Cape Breton, and later worked for the National Film Board of Canada in Halifax. While raising her family, she worked part-time as a Secretary at the local secondary and elementary schools, and volunteered for many years as the Secretary to the Musquodoboit Rural High School Board of Trustees.

Mary Ellen’s greatest passion was music. She was an extremely gifted musician, accomplished on both the piano and fiddle. She played piano at countless community events and school graduations, and spent many summers in Cape Breton after her children were grown, attending local dances and performances and enjoying the unique culture of Cape Breton music. She was a long-time member of the Cape Breton Fiddlers Association. She continued to enjoy music throughout her entire life, and hosted monthly jam sessions in her home right up until 2020.

Mary Ellen will be deeply missed by her devoted children, Martha McHardy, Cobble Hill, BC; Moira (Vic) Smyth, Richmond, BC; Ranald MacQuarrie, Middle Musquodoboit; Isabella (Bella) MacQuarrie (Phil Wright), 100 Mile House, BC; and Ian MacQuarrie (Nancy Murchy), Middle Musquodoboit; along with her cherished grand-daughters, Casandra Jakubiec, Nelson, BC; and Hanna Smyth, Oxford, UK.

Mary Ellen is also survived by several McFetridge and MacQuarrie nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Her children wish to extend their heartfelt gratitude to their cousin Ellen McFetridge for her loving, devoted support and companionship to her dear Aunt Mary. As well, we offer our deepest appreciation to the exceptional medical team who provided such compassionate, dedicated care to Mom.

Mary Ellen was predeceased by her husband, George MacQuarrie in 2012; and her brothers, Victor, Donald and John (Jack) McFetridge.

Her modest and non-judgemental character, extremely sharp mind and genuine interest in the lives of those she loved will be deeply missed by her family, as well her beautiful smile which could light up a room. We will forever benefit from the extraordinary example of quiet strength, grace and kindness that she demonstrated throughout her life.

Diana Beverly Gaetz

gaetz, diana (2).jpg

Gaetz, Diana Beverly – It is with profound sadness that we announce that the light of our lives passed away suddenly in the late evening of January 18, 2021. Diana Beverly Gaetz (Myers), age 79, born in Kentville, passed away surrounded by her loving family, leaving us all, for now at least, a bit in the dark.

Diana, Mom, had a difficult but interesting early life. Born into a world at war to father, Vincent Martell Myers, a Merchant Mariner, and mother, Rita Catherine Harris, who died when Mom was only two years old. While her father continued his war efforts, she was lovingly cared for by her grandmother and two aunts until her father met and married Anna Laird Hanshaw (Nanny Myers), in Halifax in 1947. This union resulted in the birth of Mom’s pride and joy: her sister, Barbara Steele (Myers), who currently resides in Ontario.

Mom's Dad, a gentle soul, was also a bit of a gypsy and the next several years were spent travelling between numerous addresses in Toronto and Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. Mom eventually settled and remained on the Eastern Shore where she entered a secretarial program at Halifax Vocational School, finishing at the top of her class.  Shortly afterwards this outgoing, fun loving, beautiful young women met a handsome, roguish, Chezzetcooker, Wayne Melvin Gaetz, and began a 62-year love affair. Dad’s mother, Leva Gaetz; father, Andrew; and siblings soon became the focal point of their life.

We, the kids, came regularly at two-year intervals. Mom gave us extremely loving, supportive, intelligent, relaxed care. Mom was happiest with her head in a book or when socializing with the other Moms in the neighbourhood; all of them ignoring their broods busily terrorizing one another.

Mom kept busy doing substitute teaching at the High School. Soon she began employment at the Head Chezzetcook Post Office, where she loved spending time with the public and her coworkers, many of whom became good friends.

Dad built a cottage on Sole's Lake in the late 70's and it became the focal point of much of the family social life. Mom absolutely loved it there. She may have been a mermaid in a past life because that woman swam and floated half the summers away for the last 50 years. In her last few years Mom’s passion for swimming continued at her daughter, Rosalie’s, pool.

Once her life and family were well settled, ironically, the gypsy genes she inherited from her father began to emerge and her passion for travel began. She and Dad were always packing us kids into the car for road trips, including regular trips to visit her Toronto family.  As life got a bit more comfortable the travels grew more adventurous. She eventually cajoled Dad into a European adventure with Uncle Reid and Aunt Marion. That only whetted her appetite. When her son began a career in the airlines in the mid-eighties her wanderlust truly took off: Italy, France, Switzerland, England, Scotland, Hawaii, Bermuda, Mexico. When the son didn't take her for a while the daughters were drafted, resulting in trips to Florida, Iceland, Mexico, Cuba, the Bahamas, and an Alaskan and Mediterranean cruise. She was a fearless traveler! Snorkel a reef in Mexico or Bermuda, you bet! Parasail behind a speedboat, oh yeah!  Cable car to some of the highest peaks of Switzerland, absolutely! When she wasn’t travelling abroad, it was back to the car for local adventures with Uncle Duke, Aunt Anna, Reid and Marion. When age and health problems slowed her down it was shorter car trips with her family.

A nature-lover – in the extreme – she never failed to marvel at Nature’s endless artistry: a billowy cloud in an azure sky; the crashing surf along the Eastern Shore’s many beaches; the slender beauty of a white birch tree; or her many “pet” spiders and crows. She especially savored Nova Scotia’s splendor during her weekly “Thelma & Louise” drives with her fabulous friend Ann Ferguson. Over the past few years Mom (Thelma) and Ann (Louise) traipsed nearly every paved - and the odd unpaved - road in the province, sampling the food at every fish and chips place along the way.

Mom will be forever cherished in the memories of her husband, Wayne; sister, Barbara Steele (Jack), Mississauga; us kids, Michelle Gaetz-Wolfe (Greg), Rosalie Gaetz-Keating (Grant), Bradley (Solveig Madsen), Heidi Wolfe (David), and Holli Burnett (Derek), all in Head Chezzetcook; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will also be sorely missed by her cat, Maggie.

She was an amazing Mom, and maybe an even more amazing grandmother and great- grandmother. Her greatest joy was actively playing with and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We would be remiss if we did not mention Mom’s profound sense of humour and contagious laughter. She was a warm, kind, caring, uncritical friend to so many.  A role model. We were blessed. Everyone she touched was blessed.

A private ceremony will be held for the immediate family only, because of COVID-19 restrictions.

In lieu of flowers our family asks that you please make a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.

Robert "Bob" Stansfield Latimer

latimer, robert 3.jpg

Latimer, Robert Stansfield “Bob” – age 92, of Truro passed away peacefully on January 16, 2021 of natural causes.

Bob was predeceased by his mother, Anita; his father, H.H.; his wife, Sadie; and his brother, Hugh. Bob is survived by children, Rob (Sonya), Nancy (Mike), John (Vikki); brother, Dave (Elizabeth); sister, Karen; and grandchildren, Caitlin, Robert (Kat), Brendan (Sarah), Elizabeth (Matt), Mackenzie and Michael (Alyssa).

In Bob’s own words; “I can say, first and foremost, that all through my life God has blessed me with so many wonderful experiences and opportunities to serve the Christian Church and its people, as well as many unforgettable communities and organizations, from whom I learned invaluable life lessons.

Bob was born in July 1928 to H.H. and Anita Latimer in Sydney. After graduating from New Glasgow High School in 1946, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (1951) and a Bachelor of Education (1952) at Mount Allison University. It was during his final year at Mt A that he met his future wife, Sadie Charleen Latimer (Snow).  After leaving Mt. A he earned a Master in Divinity (1954) at Pine Hill Divinity College.

In 1955, Sadie and Bob married, going on to have three children, Robert V, Nancy and John. In Bob’s own words; “I can say that God has blessed me with the most wonderful wife any man could ever have - my dearest Sadie, whom I love with all my heart.  I can also say that I was very fortunate to have, supporting me over the years, my family - my parents and in-laws, my siblings and their families, and especially my children and grand-children, of whom Sadie and I are very proud.”

After graduation, he entered the United Church Ministry with his first assignment as minister of the River Denys-Orangedale Pastoral Charge in July 1954.  Bob enjoyed postings of increasing responsibility within the United Church starting with Assistant Minister of Trinity United Church, Charlottetown, PEI in 1958, Christian Education Field Secretary for Maritime Conference in Sackville NB in 1962, and Principal of Atlantic Christian Training Center (ACTC), Tatamagouche, in 1967. In 1971 he left active ministry within the United Church to start the Association for Human Relations Education (AHRE) and the National Training Institute (NTI) in Truro, providing adult leadership training and development programs. These enterprises were relocated to Fredericton, NB in 1975. In 1986 he started Latimer Consulting Systems in Fredericton, continuing his work in leadership training and which he operated until his retirement in 2000.

Throughout his years in Truro and Fredericton, he continued to maintain his involvement with the United Church preaching at anniversary and other special services at churches throughout the Maritime Provinces, serving as Interim Minister at Nashwaaksis United Church, from 1983-1984 and again in 1988. He also held various roles within United Church Maritime Conference including President from 1995-1996.

Bob was active in Boys Parliament, Scouts and various Christian youth camps during the 1950s and 1960s.  Personal interests included: tree cultivation, genealogy, music including a lifelong love of Hollywood Musicals and singing in various Gilbert & Sullivan productions.

Bob loved to research and write. His works included: two family histories, documenting family reunions, a volume of stories written for his children and grandchildren, several United Church congregational and community histories of Orangedale, Malagawatch, Marble Mtn, River Denys and Truro, a history of shipbuilding in Tatamagouche and other histories of Nova Scotian events and people, a book on his father, HH Latimer, a reflection on his own life and many other works.

One of Bob’s greatest passions was vacationing with wife, Sadie and children at their cottage in Kempt Head. Bob & Sadie attended at Kempt Head most years from 1955 to 2016. Bob and Sadie also enjoyed travel, taking extended camping trips with the family throughout Canada and the USA. Bob and Sadie visited Bermuda, Bahamas, Barbados and Greece. Bob also traveled through Europe with brother, Hugh and Ireland with son, Rob. Bob was grateful for the many travel opportunities he had during his life to explore parts of the world and its people.  Bob believed the earth was a beautiful place and, despite the evil that challenges all people daily, he believed that God’s handiwork, meaning and purpose for the world, would ultimately prevail.

Bob was an active member of St Andrews UC church in Truro for the past 20 years. He was so grateful for the wonderful pastoral care that was provided to Sadie and himself over the past few years. Bob resided at Parklands Truro for the last several years. He truly appreciated the quality of care received by Sadie and himself.

Bob’s belief was that in the final analysis, it is not the great world events that fill the media daily, but the little everyday acts of kindness and love, one to another, that matter most, and that give life its real and ultimate meaning.

Funeral service details TBA. A burial will be held at Drummond Memorial Church in Ross Ferry, NS when circumstances permit.

Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."

He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your times of trial and suffering.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."

Maxine Gourley

Gourley, Maxine – Age 71 of Riverside was taken from us on January 10, 2021. She was a daughter of the late George and Gertie (Custance) Gourley; the wise, responsible and treasured big sister to Phyllis (Jeffrey Miller), Toronto; and George (Annette), Riverside; the beloved aunt of William (Melinda), Fort Ellis and Jonathan (Julie), Mineville; and, the very special Great Auntie Ding Dong to Liam, Caleb and Cody.

She also leaves many cousins and dear friends, particularly Havey Whidden whose friendship and constant support were so important to her through the years and especially during her illness.

Maxie faced that illness with the same courage and resolve that she demonstrated throughout her life. As a young widow (David Whitman, 1975), she took charge and charted her own course; she built her own home into which she welcomed her parents and Uncle Ted Gourley; she capitalized on her training in animal husbandry at the NSAC to establish a beef farming operation which she maintained until the last few months. She loved her white cows, prompting a fellow farmer to remark that hers were the best kept beef cows in Nova Scotia.

Her “day job” was in banking and she was well known across the counter at a number of branches of the major banks in Truro, Stewiacke and Shubenacadie until her retirement.

Maxie was inspiration.

As if the physical demands of farming and an off-farm job were not enough, Maxie was committed to her annual kitchen garden which she planted, tended, harvested, pickled and stored, sharing with family and friends as well as with the deer that relied on her tolerance and generosity. She also chopped, stacked and stored her winter’s supply of firewood each year.

She loved nothing better than rambling the spring woods in search of violets, her favourite, and elusive Lady’s Slippers or relaxing on her deck enjoying the deer, pheasants, hummingbirds, finches and so many others who visited her feeders, but, to her regret, never a cardinal.

Maxie greatly valued her community and was a driving force in the Riverside Fort Ellis Community Club which established the Caddell Rapids Lookoff Provincial Park.  She served as Secretary to both the Stewiacke and the Colchester County Federations of Agriculture for more than 25 years.

The Federation will honour her contributions with the establishment of a scholarship in her name to be awarded to a woman studying in agriculture.

Maxie’s interests extended well beyond her local community. She was an avid consumer of news and current events. She loved a good discussion about politics and the state of the world with the view to setting it all straight.  No such conversation was ever brief!

Her down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach to life will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.

Unfortunately, due to pandemic restrictions, her memorial service must be delayed to a later date.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to Canadian Cancer Society or the Palliative Care Unit of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Capt. David Arthur Colquhoun Cameron (ret'd)

cameron, david 3 (2).jpg

Cameron, David Arthur Colquhoun Capt. (ret’d), age 89, of Halifax. We are sad to announce the passing of our father on January 4, 2021 after a lengthy courageous fight with cancer.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late James and Pearl (Chute). Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Judith (Higgins); and older sister, Geraldine Nicole.

He is survived by his children, Wendy Cameron of Halifax, James (Marialex) Cameron of Virginia and Heather (Timothy) Mitchell of Alberta. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Jillian, Kate, Connor, Callan, Virginia, Luis and Eduardo; great-grandchildren, Ava and Alexander; younger sister, Barbara Parker, Dartmouth; and many extended family members and wonderful friends.

Dad worked as a carpenter for Brookfields when he was a young man. He eagerly joined the Halifax Fire Department and rose through the ranks, serving several years as a devoted and admired Captain. He retired after a distinguished career spanning almost four decades.

Dad was an avid fisherman and hunter, with the skills of an expert marksman. He hunted both large and small game, fished freshwater and loved deep sea fishing and even lobstered for a period. He could make his own nets, loaded his own ammunition and fletched his own arrows.

We will never forget the captivating stories he told throughout the years about his experiences as a firefighter or as a seasoned outdoorsman. He taught us everything from how to net minnows in the mudflats of Chezzetcook to how to jig for squid off Sambro to how to cook the perfect turkey.

Later years he enjoyed playing pool, crib, darts, cooking and providing his home grown vegetables and preserves to friends and family. Always creating his own twist to a well known recipe, his favourite line will always be remembered as, “Try this… I tried something new.”

A special thank you to his caring neighbour and good friend, Brian who without him Dad would have been unable to remain in his home for so many years. Good friends, Jack, Patti and Gerald were close to his heart as well as his most trusted buddy, Stevie the cat.

Many, many thanks to the wonderful nurses and doctors at VG Palliative care unit for making our father’s final days ones of comfort and support. It was Dad’s wishes that anyone able to make a contribution in these troubling times to make it to VG Palliative Care Unit or Canadian Red Cross.

A Memorial Service will take place at another date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
