Linda Minnie Conrad

Conrad, Linda Minnie – Age 72, of Gays River Road, passed away peacefully at home on October 28, 2020 with family by her side. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Dixon) Turner.

Linda was always community minded and will be most remembered as a caregiver for many years looking after many seniors and children.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Iver; children, Ellen (Conrad) Ollie (Peter Turner), Truro; Walter (Teri)(Canning) Conrad, Upper Stewiacke; grandchildren, Jacob (Jessica) Ollie, Jessica (Ainslie) Brown, Jenna Conrad (Cory McEwan); great-grandchildren, Abbigail Ollie, Jack Ollie and Hattie Brown; siblings, Anne (Dixon) Rambeau, Dingwall; Tom (Linda)(Smith) Turner, Milford; Barbara (Turner)(Albion) Leslie, Grand Manan; Bryston Turner, Halifax; Shirley (Turner) (Bobby) Clark, Lower Sackville; Carvell Turner, Grand Manan.

She was predeceased by brother-in-law, Joseph Rambeau.

Cremation has taken place.

In keeping with COVID-19 restrictions, a family graveside service will be held in Milford Cemetery.

Henry Van Ee (CPO Ret'd)

Van Ee, Henry (retired CPO) – Age 86, of East Chezzetcook, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2020 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour.

Born in Lunteren, Netherlands, he was a son of the late Walter and Francina (Roelofsen) Van Ee.

Henry immigrated to Canada with his family in 1948 and joined the RCN in 1952.

Henry is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Daye); children and their spouses, Karen (Gerald) Brown, Glenda (Bradley) Nickerson, Vernon (Norine) Van Ee and Lynn (John) MacLeod; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard (Gladys), Frank (Willy).

Cremation has taken place.

There will be no service at his request.

John "Allen" Fraser

Fraser, John “Allen” – Age 90, of Elmsvale, passed away suddenly on October 26, 2020 at home. Born in Newcomb Corner, Allen was a son of the late Bryson and Vera (Stevenson) Fraser.

Surviving are his wife, Carol (Higgins); brother-in-law, Norval (Donna) Higgins; nieces, Rebecca Higgins (Mike Cheng), Ceara Higgins (Demetry Assimakopoulos); nephew, Tristan (Jolynne); two great-nieces and three great-nephews; brothers, Fred (Elva), Richard, Francis (Donna); sisters, Marion Williams, Dorothy (Duncan) Glawson, Julia (Bob) Sullivan, Bernice (Byron) Taylor, sister-in-law, Jean Fraser; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brother, Edson and sister-in-law, Bernice.

Cremation has taken place.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions there will be no funeral. Burial will be in Higginsville Cemetery.

Anthony "Tony" Charles Baker

Baker, Anthony “Tony” Charles – Meaghers GranBaker, Anthony “Tony” Charles – Age 74 of Meaghers Grant. Tony’s family is saddened to announce his passing on October 23, 2020 in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Born in Torquay, England, he was a son of the late Roland and Edna (Hodges) Baker.

Tony came to Canada at the age of 16 to help on his great-uncle’s farm in Morinville, Alberta. He later attended NAIT to obtain his training as a journeyman carpenter. After meeting Trudy, the love of his life, and marrying in 1979, they moved to Nova Scotia to be closer to family. He was blessed with three beautiful daughters whom he adored. He was devoted to his family and the community. Throughout his life, he was an active member in St. James United Church, the volunteer fire department, a scout and 4-H leader and a long-serving member of the Lions Club. He was a good man, always kind, gentle and the first to lend a hand. He retired from the HRSB where he was a well-loved friend to students and teachers alike. Tony loved traveling especially to visit family in England, St. Kitts, B.C. and Ontario. Family Sunday dinners were a treasured part of the week, whether at home or in a pub.

He will always be loved and missed by wife, Trudy (Bayer); daughters, Susan (Darren) LaSaga, their children, Adalyn and Sam, Carrolls Corner; Kathryn (Véron) Lake, their children, Véron and Paige, St. Kitts; Janet (Carlos) Esquivel, Ottawa; sister, Averil (Dick) Lister, England; nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Nancy (Jim) Turner, Musquodoboit Harbour; brother-in-law, John (June) Bayer, Edmonton.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Pam and her husband Des Maley.

Cremation has taken place.

Visitation will be held Sunday, 1-4 p.m. in St. James United Church, Meaghers Grant with COVID restrictions in place. A private funeral service will be held.

Abbott, Ernest “Freeman” (CPO2 ret’d) – Age 74, of Lantz, and formerly of Burin, N.L., passed away October 23, 2020 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Leaving to mourn his loss are his long-time companion, Georgina Penney; his daughters, Kristi Abbott, Sidney, B.C.; Karen Abbott, Kirkland, Quebec; Lisa (Mike) Mahoney, Lantz; grandchildren, Leah, Jacob, Hannah, Aidan, Lily, Violet, Evaleigh; sisters, Sandra (Richard) Murray, Paradise, NFLD; Rexene (Rod) Williams, Mt. Pearl, NFLD; Carolyn (Max) Bennett, Paradise, NFLD; as well as a large number of relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by parents, Ernest and Eliza (Foote) Abbott; brother, John; son, Daniel, in infancy.

MaryAnne (Beaver) Bailey

Bailey (Beaver), MaryAnne – Age 56, of Lake Echo, went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ at home on October 18, 2020 with her loving husband by her side. This marked the end of her seventh courageous battle with cancer. Born in Schefferville, Northern Quebec, she was the daughter of Denise (Guilbault) Beaver, Northwood Manor, Halifax and the late Douglas Beaver, Port Dufferin. MaryAnne is also survived by her loving husband, J. Greg Bailey of 35 years; his mother, Dorothy (Macdonald) Bailey, Truro; her older brother, Leslie D. and Gay (Harley), Lower Sackville; younger brother, J. Charles and Shelley (Johnson), Sackville, NB; and half brother, Joe Budgell, Oshawa, ON. Also surviving are her much loved nephew and niece, Max and Peyton, Sackville, NB, to whom she always gave great love and friendship. MaryAnne is also survived by many much-loved family members on her husband’s side.

Her kind heart and overwhelming generosity were evident to her family, friends and church family. Her faith and trust in God increased as her body failed. Her passing into His loving arms is a testimony to 2 Cor 12.9, “And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” MaryAnne loved and trusted Christ as her Savior and found strength in the Psalm 23 and Isaiah 12:2 which she often quoted to all, “...I am confident and unafraid...”.

MaryAnne graduated from Cobequid Educational Centre, Truro, Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, Truro, and Dalhousie University, Halifax, and earned an Acadia University Certificate of French Proficiency (Masters Equivalent) May 2013. She met the man of her dreams, Greg, June 27, 1984 and, after a short engagement (from June 27, 1985-Aug 24, 1985) they were married in Truro, while she was still a student at the NSTC. They lived in Truro, Halifax, Chester and Dartmouth, moving as her studies and career necessitated, before settling in Lake Echo in 1989 where they resided until now.  She taught elementary core French from 1987-2007 in over 25 schools, mostly in the former Halifax County and Halifax Regional School Board grades 4-6 since 1988. In 2001, she worked for the Terry Fox Foundation in Halifax. She assisted with the construction of eight churches, one house and dozens of roofing jobs, which she enjoyed immensely. She loved her church family and served as the first female Sunday School Song Leader, a Teller, Nursery Committee, Social Committee, Music Committee, Worship Teams, Choir Director (14 years), DVBS, and most recently LEFBC Go Team. MaryAnne loved to serve the Lord where she could. She also loved to travel, and to run, which she and Greg combined on their second marathon together in Paris, France. She will fondly be remembered as the best wife and a wonderful French teacher.  She was a passionate spokesperson for the Terry Fox Foundation in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In 2012, MaryAnne was recognized by MLA Keith Colwell for her tireless work in the community with the Terry Fox Foundation, organizing over 50 runs for her schools and community which has been noted in the NS Legislature History books dated October 29, 2012. She was also a strong supporter of the War Amps, The Lung Association, and the MS Society among others. 

A special thanks to doctors Bill Bradley, Rayma Macpherson, Robert Grimshaw, James Bentley, NP Nicole Fulford, the VON and the palliative care unit at the QE II and to family and friends who gave support from 1994 to 2020.

Visitation will take place in Lake Echo Fellowship Baptist Church, Lake Echo, on Wednesday, October 21, 4 to 7 p.m. with funeral service to be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Scott Mackenzie officiating. A family burial to follow at the Bailey family plot in Belmont. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of MaryAnne to The Terry Fox Foundation or to Lake Echo Fellowship Baptist Church, 17 Peter Court, Lake Echo, NS B2Z 1K2 for multimedia improvements.

Janice Marlene (MacNeil) Woodhouse

On Wednesday, October 7, 2020, Janice Woodhouse, loving mother, sister and grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 72 in Halifax after a long battle with cancer.

She was a loving mother to Tammy (Steve) Killorn, David (Deanna) Lumax, Jennifer (Dave) Gardiner and Debbie (Adam) Zavitz. She was a grandmother to Brittani, Courtney, Stephanie, Erica, Evan, Becky, Jarrett, Braya, Amanda, Sierra, Sydney, MacKenna, Brooke and Hayden.  She was also a great grandmother to Cayden, Alexis, Nayla, and Aria.

Janice was also an aunt to many nieces and nephews and sister to Gary and Mark MacNeil. She was predeceased by her brother, Roddy MacNeil and her parents, John and Dora MacNeil.

Our mother was a beautiful funny soul who loved to dance, sing and laugh.  She cherished her family and loved nothing more than spending time with her children and grandchildren who were her world.  Our mom loved family gatherings a few times a year and would plan her menu a year in advance!  We will truly miss her more than words can express and our family gatherings will never be the same.

Mom also loved and valued all of the many friendships she had over the years and especially with her friends of over 40 years, Al and Marion.

A very special thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Halifax Hospice for their care and comfort of our mother and family during her last days.

A Celebration of Life will be held with family.

David Thomas Clarke

Clarke, David Thomas – Age 66 of Bible Hill, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2020 in Halifax Infirmary, QEII with his family by his side.

Born in Yarmouth, he was a son of Bernice (Sullivan) Clarke and the late Thomas Clarke.

David had been employed for 43 years at Stanfield’s as a mechanic. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, travelling and spending time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed time with his grandson, Caleb and his furry companion, Chloe.

He will always be loved and missed by wife, Monique; sons, Brian (Sheryl) Clarke, Bible Hill; Thomas Clarke, Red Deer, Alberta; Devin Crowell, Bible Hill; grandchildren, Caleb, Rebekka, Rylee; brother, Bruce (Susan) Clarke, Yarmouth; Tim (Joanne) Clarke, Halifax; Alan (Susan) Clarke, Yarmouth; several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.  

In keeping with David’s wishes and kindness, he donated corneas and tissue so others may benefit through him.

Chaplin, Heather Jean – Age 65, of Halifax passed away peacefully on October 4, 2020 in Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Halifax.

Born in Saint John, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Dora Cobham.

She was meticulous about her surroundings and loved her grandchildren, movies and jewellery.

Surviving are husband, Dean; son, Tim Gogan; grandchildren, Brianna Richard, Olivia Richard.

Pauline Elizabeth Grant

Grant, Pauline Elizabeth - Age 82 of Lantz passed away on October 4, 2020 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Hull, England, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Beatrice (Coggen) Chamberlain.

Pauline took great pride in her home and family. She enjoyed knitting and travelling and we will miss her mischievous wit.

She will be forever in the hearts of those who loved her, especially her husband of 62 years, Brian; son, Mark (Kim), Lower Sackville; grandson, Brandon, St. John’s, Newfoundland; brothers, Geoffrey, John (Betty); sister, Brenda (Gordon) Jackson, all of England.

Derek "Heavy D" Randall McLellan

McLellan, Derek Randall “Heavy D” – Age 50 of Gays River passed away suddenly at home on October 2, 2020. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Cyril and Audrey (Hirtle) McLellan.

Derek enjoyed singing and playing guitar, travelling, watching sports, especially hockey and golf, and loved to play cards (very competitively). He had been a long-time employee of Curly’s Pub and Grub where he made lifelong friends. Many of these friends were part of the annual trip down south in the spring which Derek came back sunburnt, mildly hung over and full of hilarious stories. He was a great singer and musician discovering this talent at an early age spending many a summer day on the back doorstep belting out songs with his childhood friends. Over the years, he was part of a number of bands which were made up of friends, family and co-workers, ending with The River Bottom Band.

Derek’s easy-going manner, big heart and quick and often “sarcastic” sense of humour put a big smile on everyone’s face whether he was home with family, sharing a laugh with his cousin, Dale, standing on stage next to long-time friend, Johnny Rock, or being “sociable” with the Tangly Bunch online, or just hanging out with his friends. His all too soon passing has left a void in many lives.

He will never be forgotten and sadly missed by sister, Sherri; niece, Megan; nephew, Ethan and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Scott in infancy.

Cremation has taken place.

Parker, William Leonard “Sweet William” – Age 69 of Wittenburg passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2020.

Bill was known for his hockey skills and athletic abilities when younger and in later years for his business “Sweet William’s Country Sausage”. His greatest passion in life was sailing and boating.

Jennifer Denise Hawes

Hawes, Jennifer Denise – It is with broken hearts, the family of Jennifer D. Hawes, age 44, of Upper Stewiacke announce her passing on September 26, 2020 in Colchester East Hants Heath Centre, Truro.
Jennifer was a daughter of Cyril and Donna Hawes. She was a kind and caring soul. She loved to help others and took pride in being a continuous care assistant for the VON. She especially loved caring for her pets and they always loved her, always jumping up in her lap and snuggling in bed with her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving are her mother, Donna Hawes, Upper Stewiacke; sisters, Cheryl (Dan Gerber), AB; Andrea (Adrian) Mallabo, AB; brother, Michael Hawes, Upper Stewiacke; niece, Olivia Mallabo, AB; nephew, Logan Mallabo, AB; and many aunts and uncles and numerous cousins.

Audrey Jean (Holman) Ryan

Ryan (Holman), Audrey Jean - With broken hearts, we the family of Audrey Jean Ryan announce her unexpected passing at the Halifax Infirmary on September 25, 2020, at the age of 84. Mom was born in Glenmore, the youngest daughter of Isaac and Mildred (Bates) Holman. Mom loved to tell stories of her childhood; bottle feeding lambs, chasing chickens, dressing her cat like a baby, and helping on the farm. She attended the one room schoolhouse in Glenmore and continued her education at Musquodoboit Rural High School. Mom took great pride to have worked as a telephone operator at the Maritime Tel and Tel office in Middle Musquodoboit. She then married Ivan and raised us on the family farm in Glenmore along with her mom, our Grandma. We enjoyed many family drives in the country, beach trips and picnics, and dancing in the kitchen to the Saturday Night Hoedown. Many summers she worked for Glenmore Industries supervising crews of blueberry pickers. 

In 2005, Mom and Dad moved to an apartment on Brandt Lane in Brookfield where she continued to reside after Dad passed in 2007.  She loved spending time in the common room chatting with her apartment friends, putting together puzzles and especially Saturday morning coffee parties.  She enjoyed many Sunday afternoons on road trip adventures with her sister-in-law, Donna.

Surviving are her children, Sherry Kinslow, Truro; Stephen Ryan, Halifax; Lorraine Ryan and husband, Vincent Kaulback, Middle Stewiacke; Robert Ryan, Glenmore; Jack Ryan and wife, Dawn, Kirkland Lake, Ontario; her grandchildren, Kirk (Brittany Phinney), Blake, Julie (Dylan Roode) and Jessica Kinslow lovingly referred to her as Budgie; she was Grammie to Alisha Brooks (Jason), Rebecca Sharpe (Brant Hunter) and Ethan Sharpe, Mackenzie and Allyson Ryan, Eddie and Jacob Ryan; her great-grandchildren, Xavier Eady, Tucker Roode and Devon Kinslow; Roman and Ayla Brooks; Callum, Rowan and Poppy Hunter; her sisters-in-law, Donna Kent and Irma (Blake) Hiltz; several nieces and nephews.  She will be missed by her beloved cat, Dixie.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Ivan Ryan, and sister, Pauline Fraser.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, October 4, at 2 p.m. in Hillside Cemetery, Middle Musquobodoit, Rev. David LeBlanc officiating.

Steeves, George Randall – Age 57 of Old Tatamagouche Road, passed away suddenly at his home on September 23, 2020 with his family by his side.

George loved nature, especially bird-watching and hummingbirds were his favorite. He was an avid hockey fan and loved his Canadian teams. The thing that he held most dear was his family. His children, grandchildren and siblings were his world and he will be greatly missed as a loved father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

He will always be loved by daughters, Jennifer (Jason) Monk, Princeport; Alyssa Steeves (Logan), Truro; Mckenna Steeves, Truro; Shelby Smith, New Glasgow; sons, Daniel (Chrissy), Truro; Wyatt, Truro; grandchildren, Eva and Jacob Monk, Sadie, Talon, Lucas, Autumn Steeves, Nehalem Bigney; brothers and best friends, Roy (Kelly), Wentworth; Bernard (Kristy), North River; little brother and roommate, Donnie; sisters, Jeannie Theriault (his good friend, Randy Lynds), Salmon River; Susan (Bruce) Whalen, North River; many nieces and nephews; special friend and mother of Mckenna and Wyatt, Julie Chisholm.

Blaine Henry Prest

Prest, Blaine Henry – Age 76 of Dartmouth, passed away September 25, 2020, in Dartmouth General Hospital, with family by his side.

Born in Moose River Gold Mines, he was a son of the late Charles and Annie (Fahie) Prest.

Blaine had been an active member of Port Wallis United Church where he taught Sunday school and was a member of the Board of Stewards. He taught Cubs, enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He carried on his mother’s tradition of knitting socks to give to others.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda; children, Brianne (Mark) Peori, Bradley (Crystal Crawley), Brittany; grandchildren who were the apple of his eye, Isaac, Charles, Aidan and Ella; siblings, Marina Reynolds, St. Clair (Paula), George (Janice), Irma Stewart; numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored.

He was predeceased by brother, Dale.

Steven "Steve" Scott Tracey

Tracey, Steven “Steve” Scott – It was with great sadness that Steve, aged 49, passed away from complications of his heart, liver and his on-going battle with Crohn’s on September 24, 2020 in the Halifax Infirmary.

Steve will be remembered as a kind and generous person who always made others laugh and would go above and beyond to help anyone in need of a helping hand. He lived life to the fullest and always lived to help others ahead of himself.  He spent his time doing what he enjoyed most including being with his immediate family and close friends, plumbing and construction projects and being with his pets. 

Steve’s favorite times were hanging out with his daughter Sammy being an amazing Dadu to her and teaching her everything about life and love for others.  Sammy’s fondest memories of her dad were spending time out and about creating fun and crazy adventures.  They taught each other lots of life’s lessons. There were always memories made when Sammy and Steve were together.  She will greatly miss her dad and the love he showed her daily.

A special thank you goes out to Steve’s community of friends for helping Tanyia and Sammy in these difficult times.  A community is not just people we know and see on a regular basis, they are people who come to us due to the work of God’s hands.  A new larger family that both his daughter and wife will cherish and be blessed for in years to come.  God gives us many great gifts along the way in our lives and they should always be embraced.  Prayers and blessings are going out for the generosity and support.

Cremation has taken place and Steve’s remains will be buried in the Beech Hill Cemetery in Lunenburg County at a later date.

Tammy Lynn Arnold

Arnold, Tammy Lynn – Age 48 of Toronto and formerly of East Jeddore passed away September 23, 2020. She was a daughter of the late William “Bill” and Dorothy Arnold.

Before moving to Ontario, she had been employed with Zellers. Tammy loved being around people and was always cheerful and pleasant natured.

Surviving are sisters, Avis Baker; Shirley Myers; Carol (Doug) Christian; brothers, George (Bernice) Arnold; Richard (Gail) Arnold; Eddie (Darlene) Arnold; Dennis (Sheila) Arnold; Ernie (Sylvia) DeBaie; Victor DeBaie; Allen DeBaie; Pat (Lori) Arnold; sisters-in-law, April and Nancy; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Paul Arnold, David (Cheryl) Arnold, Vincent DeBaie; brothers-in-law, Marshall Myers and Wray Baker.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Robert "Bob" Foster Cole

Cole, Robert “Bob” Foster – Age 78 of Oldham, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2020 in Elk Court, Brookfield. Born in Dartmouth, he was a son of the late Warren and Dorothy (Graham) Cole.

Bob worked mostly at painting houses. He enjoyed country music and fishing.

Surviving are sister, Marjorie (Victor); brothers, Danny and Leo; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, June; brothers, George, Gerald, Arthur, Cyril and Pat.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

A family graveside service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery with Father Michael Walsh officiating.

Ruby Maud (Brown, McCabe) MacKay

MacKay (Brown, McCabe), Ruby Maud – Age 80 of Truro, passed away on September 21, 2020.

Born in The Forties Settlement, Lunenburg Co., she was a daughter of the late George Gilbert and Lillian Josephine (Jones) Brown.

She was a former employee of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College for 32 years and was a charter member of the Salmon River Fire Brigade Auxiliary.

Ruby is survived by her husband, H. Douglas MacKay; her son, Kelly Blaine McCabe, Chilliwack, B.C.; sister, Juanita (Carl) Bezanson, Port Williams; nieces, Shawna Brown, Calgary; Shelley (Dean) Corkum, Canning; grandniece, Hannah Corkum; grandnephew, Joe Corkum.

Beside her parents, Ruby was predeceased by her first husband, Everett “Lynn” McCabe (1971); son, Christopher Stephen McCabe (2020); brother, George G. Brown (2009); sister-in-law, Patricia A. Brown (2011).

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

There will be no visitation. A private graveside service will be held in Watson Cemetery, Salmon River.

Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
