Kerry Gardner

Gardner, Kerry – of Stewiacke and formerly of Truro, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2020 at the age of 81.

Born in North Sydney, he worked in sales at Kohler Windows and in retirement worked for his wife in freelance court reporting. He was a faithful member of St. James Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder for 38 years. He was the representative elder for the Presbyterian Synod and Bible study leader. He enjoyed working at the community dinners at the church for over a decade. He was a former member of Mountain and Brookfield Golf Clubs. Kerry was a member of Truro Curling Club, winning the club championship in 2020.

He is survived by his loving wife, Doris (nee Patterson); daughters, Geneve (Craig) Newcombe, of Port Williams; Andrea (Mike) Kent, of Stewiacke; grandchildren, Robert (Katie) Newcombe, David (Chrissy) Newcombe, Kathleen Newcombe (Shamus MacDonald-Brawn), Samantha and Alex Kent; great-granddaughter, Maddie Newcombe. Also surviving are brother, Bill (Jean) Gardner; sisters, Donna Evans and Diane Clarke; sisters-in-law, Carol (Don) Fraser, Sybil McCurdy, Sylvia Wilkins, Ruby (Allan) Ramsland; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

 He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Greta (Nicholson) Gardner; stepmother, Beth.

Funeral service will be in St. James Presbyterian Church, Truro, on Friday, September 25, at 11 a.m. Due to COVID-19, there will be no visitation and limited seating for the service. Please register by email at st.jamestruro@gmail.com. All COVID precautions will be followed.

Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Branch of Canadian Cancer Society, St. James Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.

Wayne Scott Hetherington

Hetherington, Wayne Scott – Age 76, of Three Fathom Harbour, peacefully passed away September 21, 2020 due to complications with pneumonia.

Born in Dartmouth, he was the youngest of four children born to Charles and Ann (Purcell) Hetherington. Wayne grew up in the Imperoyal Village in Woodside where his time was spent playing hockey and basketball with neighborhood kids. From a young age you could tell that Wayne had a kind way about him, by always finding a dog waiting for him at home.

From the Village, the family eventually moved to Three Fathom Harbour, where they found home.

Wayne trained as a heavy duty mechanic where he spent the early part of his career working with the Coast Guard, travelling while working on the engines. The majority of his career was spent at International Trucks in Burnside for 30 years.

In his down time, he could often be found at the Lawrencetown Volunteer Fire Department, coaching the boys’ baseball games or spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed baseball with the old timers, darts, NASCAR races, trips to the United States to visit family and simply enjoying the outdoors!

Wayne left behind his sons, Greg, Dartmouth, and Kyle (Nicki), Mineville; grandsons, Jake, Corey; neices, Debbie (Joe) Burnes, Leslie (Richie) Yerardi; nephews, Chris (Patti) Chaplin and Rob Chaplin; and many other nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. He was predeceased by siblings, Ted (Donna), Carole and Lois. He is reunited with the love of his life, Linda, together once again.

David Blair Warman

Warman, David Blair – Age 60, of Upper Musquodoboit passed away September 17, 2020 in Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Halifax, with family by his side.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of Marie (Murphy) Warman and the late Alvin Warman, and a stepson of Moe Chuchmuch.

Dave had a love of anything with tires and a motor and was very proud of his new convertible. He enjoyed cooking, music and getting together with friends and family. His black labs always had a special place in his home and heart.

He will always be missed by wife, Tracey Elliott; children, Katie, Jenna, Robert, Braydon; and grandson, Julian.

Besides his father, he was predeceased by brother, Ronald Kenneth.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Sheryl Ann Deale

Deale, Sheryl Ann – Age 46, of Meaghers Grant passed away September 17, 2020 in Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Halifax.

Born in Middle Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of Sonny and Evy Deale.

Her working life was spent with Avis Car Rentals, East Coast Amusement and most recently as a bus monitor with Stock Transportation. Sheryl had a big heart and there was no animal or human that she would not take in. She always put everyone before herself especially her children.

She is survived by her parents, Lloyd and Evelyn; brother, George (Tammy); children, Tasha Pollard (Mike), Tyler and Orien Petit; special friend, Doug Ribar; granddaughter, Kora; as well as many other special friends and family who will miss her.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

A private graveside service will be held in Elderbank Cemetery.

Many thanks to all of the community for the support given during the time of Sheryl’s sickness and passing. It was greatly appreciated and did not go unnoticed.

Andrews (Higgins) (Hutchinson), Edith Grace

Andrews (Higgins) (Hutchinson), Edith Grace – Age 90, of the Musquodoboit Valley, passed away peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on September 17, 2020.

Edith was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was incredibly loyal and proud of her family and dedicated much of her time to those she loved the most. Edith was a gifted seamstress and craftsperson; dressing many-a bride, filling our Christmas trees with crocheted angels and snowflakes, and protecting our hands with beautiful pot-holders. Beyond being a stoic matriarch, she will also be remembered as a local teacher and “warden” of the blueberry field. During her later years, Edith travelled across much of North America. She enjoyed dipping her toes in the waters of Taylor Head and the North Shore. Edith spent many nights challenging others to a competitive game of Crib, Scrabble, Rummoli, and Spite and Malice, often coming out victorious, regardless of the time of night.

Edith is survived by her children; Donna (Francis) Fraser, Calvin (Martha) Higgins, Phillip (Lorna) Higgins, Irene (Tim) Bowser; grandchildren, Lisa, Roy, Shelly, Pam, Trina, Jill, Brent, Craig, Casey, Emma, Rachel, Lauren and Morgan; son-in-law, Marty; great-grandchildren, Angel, Nicole, Devon, Douglas, Austin, Wyatt, Elsa, Dawson, Elyse, Matthew, Mitchell, Isla, Isabella, Emmett, Evelyn, Aidan, Rylan, Rocco, Gia, Scarlett; great-great-grandchildren, Mason, and Scarlett; sisters, Lydia and Judy; brother-in-law, Herb and sister-in-law, Shirley; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Roy and Elsie (Stewart) Hutchinson; husbands, Douglas Higgins and Fulton Andrews; children, Leonard (in infancy), Sheila, Carolyn; grandchild, Lynne; siblings, Hilda, Donnie, Alice and Jim. 

Cremation has taken place.

Family, friends, and loved ones are invited to a reception and celebration of life on Sunday, September 20, at 1 p.m. at the Middle Musquodoboit Provincial Picnic Park. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

William "Bill" Verheul

Verheul, William “Bill” – age 79, of Belmont, passed away September 17, 2020 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Zoetermeer, Netherlands, he was a son of the late Willem and Petronella Verheul.

Bill was a farmer and carpenter who also enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Janet (Mooring); children, James (Gail), Barrhead, Alta; Clint (Kari), Masstown; Heidi (Ronnie Reid), Parrsboro; Lynn (Jesse Cooper), Canning; eight grandchildren; siblings, Bep (Dr. Sietse van Zwol), West Bay; Mary (Harry Feitsma), Langley, B.C.; Nelly (Nick Noort), Burnaby, B.C.; several nieces, nephews and in-laws.

He was predeceased by siblings, Arie, Corrie (Dirk Bakker), Lanie (Bill Koops).

Cremation has taken place.

A service will be held at a later date.

Gerald Edward Coughlin

COUGHLIN, Gerald Edward – 86, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2020 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour. Born in Hammonds Plains, he was a son of late John and Margaret (Beazley) Coughlin.

He was predeceased by his brother, Bernard, Halifax; and sister, Ruby, Ottawa. He is survived by his son, Paul (Shawn); and daughter, Tara (Dave), all of West Chezzetcook; grandchildren, Alexander, Sydney, Colton, Haley and Jenna. He is also survived by his brother, Ralph, Nanaimo, BC; and many nieces and nephews in the Vancouver Island area, Edmonton, Alberta, Eastern Ontario, Chaudière-Appalaches Quebec, and Nova Scotia. He is survived by his former wife, Cheryl; and her brothers, Brian (Karen); Jay (Colleen); Ross (Gail); Scott (Lisa); Jeff (Meredith); and sister-in-law, Debbie.

Jerry was an avid fisherman and hunter, and most often with Bernie and Johnny. He enjoyed time with his children, brothers, nieces, nephews and taking grandchildren out camping. He also enjoyed talking and putting smiles on the faces of the residents of the Eastwood Manor where he resided for the past 7 years (squeak, squeak).

Jerry left home when he was able to join the Royal Canadian Air Force for three years. He then went on the to work at the House of Commons in Ottawa for some time. While in Ottawa he took the time to enjoy fishing in the Gatineau Hills region, and with his brother Ralph in Ontario. He then returned to Nova Scotia and was employed as an Electronics technician at Hermes Electronics for many years, up until his retirement. Although official retired, Jerry continued working on his inventions many knew him for.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Gaetz Brook Legion, 6644 Hwy. #7 on September 26 from 12-2 p.m., masks required due to COVID-19. Snacks and refreshments will be held at the residence of Paul Coughlin following the Celebration. He will be placed in St. Genevieve’s Church Cemetery in East Chezzetcook, at a later date with immediate family.

Special thanks to Dr. Tennessen and Twin Oaks nursing staff for all their care and compassion over the past week. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Anne (Walker) Thomas

Thomas (Walker), Anne – Age 76 of Dartmouth, passed away September 4, 2020.

Anne is survived by Barry H. Thomas, her spouse of 54 years; children, Helen Zebedee (William), Simon Thomas (Karina); grandchildren, Vivian and Brock Thomas.

She was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Alice Walker.

Anne will be remembered as a friend, mentor and teacher. She taught high school math and science in Liverpool, England and area, before moving to Canada with Barry and Helen in 1969. Simon was born in Ottawa in 1970, and the family moved to Kars, Ontario where Anne and Barry lived until Barry’s retirement. They then moved to Nova Scotia, living first in Tangier and later in Dartmouth.

Anne was active with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) since 1970, fulfilling many volunteer roles as well as the paid position of General Secretary/Treasurer for Canadian Yearly Meeting. She studied theology in Carleton University and her Quaker and ecumenical ministry had her teaching in Canada, United States, and England, and visiting the Vatican and the Middle East. Anne offered well-attended Bible study sessions into her last year.

As per her wishes, Anne’s remains have been cremated and no funeral service will be held. A memorial meeting will be held in the manner of Friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lifewater Canada or Friends United Meeting.

Floyd Kenneth Woodworth

Woodworth, Floyd Kenneth – Age 86, of Carrolls Corner, passed away peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on August 29, 2020 as the result of kidney failure due to cancer.

Floyd worked in construction all his life, running heavy equipment. The last 20 years he was employed with DOT Halifax International Airport, as a foreman airside. He loved hunting especially trips to Newfoundland and Cape Breton moose hunting. He also enjoyed fishing in Higgins and Dollar Lakes. Everyone knew of his passion for Fords and that he would never drive anything else!

Floyd is survived by his wife of 62 years, Annie (Wilkie); sons, Kenny (Elizabeth), Allen (Shelley), Brian (Rosalie); grandsons, Darren, Zachary; granddaughters, Nadine, Stephanie, Rosanna; great-granddaughters, Calie, Aubrey, Sophia; and sister-in-law, Helen.

He was predeceased by his parents, Irwin and Alice (Murray); brother, Ralph; twin brothers and a sister in infancy.

Cremation has taken place.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family service will be held with burial in Gays River Cemetery.

Severino "Nino" Venturini

Venturini, Severino “Nino” Aristide – On Saturday, August 22, 2020, Severino “Nino” Venturini passed away in Oakwood Terrace at the age of 98. He was predeceased by his dear wife, Gladys (Broomfield) Venturini; his father, Antonio Venturini; mother, Graziosa (Iusso); siblings, Cesare, Mario, Bruno, Luciano, Armando, Marguerita (Borgobello), Rena (Scaravelli), and Anna (Dazzan).

Nino was born in Teor, Province of Udine, Italy. After his service in World War II, in 1954, he immigrated to Canada through Pier 21. He was a master tailor by profession and worked for several firms including Colwell Brothers and Hudson Bay Company. He was a member of the Fogolar Furlan Association of Halifax and Italian Canadian Cultural Association. For many years, Nino lived in Cedar Glen apartment building and enjoyed playing cards and socializing with his many friends and neighbours.

Nino is survived by his son, Steven (Elaine) Venturini. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Michelle (Ben) and Corey.

Cremation has taken place and a family burial will follow at a later date. A special thank you to Georgette, Kate and all the staff at Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home. Donations can be made to the Woodlawn United Church, Dartmouth.

Glenda Wilkes

Wilkes, Glenda Rosalind (Hebb), 83, of Dartmouth and formerly of Musquodoboit Harbour, passed peacefully on August 21, 2020.

Surviving are her husband, Reg Wilkes; children, Val (Gord) Lewis, Paul, Mark (Cathy), Pete (Trisha), Chris (Jacqueline). She dearly loved her grandchildren, Bradley, Ashley, Erin, Abby, Ben, Bethany, Emma, Sophie and Lydia; and her great-grandchildren, Sarah, Andrew, Dexter and Samantha. She is also survived by brothers, Phillip and Clark Hebb.

She was predeceased by eight siblings.

Glenda loved going for drives, stopping for coffee and visiting every yard sale. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and was always up for a game of cards, scrabble or dominoes. Whatever game she played, she didn’t lose gracefully. Crossword puzzles were also a part of her daily routine.

A service will be held in Regal Heights Baptist Church, Dartmouth, on Tuesday, August 25, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Jason Cole officiating. A reception will follow.

A private family burial will have taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to a charity of your choice.

Robert Connors

Connors, Robert – It is with great sadness that the family of Robert “Bob” Connors announces his passing. Bob passed away peacefully at home in Porters Lake surrounded by family on Friday, August 14, 2020, age 72.

Originally from St. John’s, N.L., and a past resident of Labrador City, Bob and his beloved wife, Deborah called Nova Scotia home for the past 20 years.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Tom Connors (of Portugal Cove, N.L.) and Mary (nee Cochrane) (of Saint Mary’s, N.L.); mother-in-law, Joyce Baker (of Bay L’Argent, N.L.); his first wife, Renate; his brothers, Thomas, Maurice, Rivard, Fred, Walter, Cecil and Mel.

Bob leaves to mourn and is lovingly remembered by his wife of 28 years, Deborah (nee Baker); sons, Rob (Sujata), Mark (Lori), Brad (Krista); his grandchildren, Seth, Kiegan, Lorissa, Makayla, Nathan, Peyton and Morgan. Also fondly remembering Bob are his father-in-law, Absalom Baker; brothers-in-law, David (Rose), Ford (Ann), Brian (Christina), Alf (Rhonda), Geoff (Pauline), Conrad (Natasha), Shawn; sisters-in-law, Gloria (Kevin) and Rita, along with many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Thursday, August 20th from 2–5 p.m., in Porters Lake Community Centre, Highway 7. Due to COVID-19, masks are required and rules of social-distancing apply.

Grace Ruth Dodsworth

Dodsworth, Grace Ruth – Age 75, of Stewiacke East, passed away peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, on August 8, 2020 following a short battle with cancer.

Born in Hamble Hampshire, England, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Joan (Shepherd) Edwards.

Following graduating at the top of her class in nurse midwifery in England, her desire to help and serve others brought her to the mission field in Senegal and then to Belize. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, taking walks and going the extra mile for everyone.

She will always be loved and missed by her husband, Donald; children, Ruth (Andrew), Stephen, Rebecca (Trevor); grandchildren, Cameron, Michael, Paige, Zoey, Abigale, Nathaniel; sisters, Mary (Peter), Miriam, Judith (Graham).

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m., in Country Calvary Baptist Church, Milford with Pastor Morris Mills officiating. A private family interment will be held in Mountain View Cemetery, Wittenburg.

Memorial donations may be made to Country Calvary Baptist Church mission fund.

Cornelius Havenga

Havenga, Cornelius - Age 75, of Truro and formerly of Prince Edward Island passed away peacefully in Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche, on Friday, August 7, 2020.

Born in Holland, he was a son of the late Hendrik and Ymkje (Brandsma) Havenga.

Most of Cornelius’ working life was spent as an insurance broker.

Surviving are son, Dwight (Tara); granddaughter, Chelsie (Tanner Geldart); siblings, Meindert (Josephine), Klaas (Wendy), John (Linda), Weiger (Morag), Frank (Tammy), Robert (Wendy), Janet Havenga, Claire Havenga (Greg Roy); many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Henry.

Cremation has taken place.

There will be no funeral service by request.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Truro Homeless Society or Souls Harbour Mission, Truro.

BELZER, Dr. Edwin George Jr. - age 81, of Dartmouth/Middle Musquodoboit passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 5th, 2020. He was a son of the late Edwin George Sr. and Mae (Wiley). Ed is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 53 years Kathryn (Gillespie), daughters; Terry Lynn (Theodore) of New Mexico, Andrealisa Damacia of Dartmouth, son; Anton “Tony" Anduin (Susan) of Texas, and grandchildren; Johannes Anduin, Grayson Lee (Jack), and Ava.

Ed was predeceased by siblings Janet Fairo and William Belzer.

Ed moved to Nova Scotia in 1969 to join Dalhousie’s School of Physical Education. A beloved professor of human sexuality and consumer environmentalism, he will long be celebrated for his substantial and eclectic contributions as an athlete, mentor, academic, Percheron farmer, Quaker Friend, poet and volunteer.

Ed’s kindness, discipline and brilliance has touched countless individuals near and far and had a lasting impact on many organizations. He approached life with wonder and gratitude, as expressed in his own words, below:

A special thanks to Dr. Cherie Collicut, for her devoted care to Ed over the years.  A private family eco-burial has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date once current restrictions have loosened. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope for Wildlife or a charity of your choice.

Ralph Frederick Wylie Manuge

Manuge, Ralph Frederick Wylie – Age 93, passed away peacefully at the Camp Hill Veterans Unit on July 31, 2020. Born in South Brook, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late Fenwick and Mabel Dench Manuge and the last surviving member of his immediate family. Ralph retired from the Royal Canadian Navy after serving 25 years. He served during WWII and participated in convoy duty and the Battle of the Atlantic. After his retirement he took on a number of initiatives. He moved to West Petpeswick from Dartmouth in 1981 where he remained until 2015 when he moved to the Vets Unit at Camp Hill.

Dad loved gardening, hunting and fishing and enjoyed these activities with some of his children. He had a fondness for dogs, his own and those who visited his home and was generous in giving them treats. In his later years he loved to have his grandchildren and great grandchildren visit him. He was keen to share his candy with them and loved to read to them.  He also enjoyed sharing a meal with them and frequently treated them to lunch out. Ralph travelled with Claire to visit family and friends until his health no longer permitted. While a resident at the Vets Unit, he enjoyed visits with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as those with nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the faithful visits of Dad’s nieces, Maureen and Tish. The family also acknowledges the visits and calls of his long time friend Bill Parker; he spent many hours maintaining his relationship with Ralph. The family expresses thanks to all the staff of 6 East, Veterans Unit who provided care and compassion to Dad over the past five and a half years. Chris is especially thankful to Joan Parsons for her compassion in relation to facilitating visits in the last days of Dad’s life.

In addition to his parents and siblings, Ralph was predeceased by his wife Claire, daughter Penny, twin grandsons Robin and Shawn, great grandson Mark and daughter-in-law Tammy. He is survived by his children, Diane (Tonnie), Adele (Aidan), Chris (Kim), Patrick (Claudette), Annemarie, Jamie (Jennifer), Peter, Tony and Dennis (Tracy). In addition he is survived by ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Due to COVID restrictions, a private funeral service will take place at a later date.

Donations can be made to the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation or Paws Fur Thought (Service Dogs for Veterans), or the charity of your choice.

Perry Wade Graham

Graham, Perry Wade – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Perry Graham of Upper Stewiacke. He was taken from us on July 30, 2020 at the age of 59 after fighting a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Perry started climbing towers at a young age and continued as a rigger until about two years ago when the onset of dementia made it impossible for him to continue. He worked for over 25 years for Don Fisher Construction and later for GTI during which time he travelled extensively across Canada.

Perry was a son of Beulah and the late Kenneth Graham. Besides his mother, he is survived by his son, Bradley; daughter, Sara (Brandyn); grandchildren, Gabby, Willow, Isaac; and his brother, Kevin. Left also to remember Perry are many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Perry was predeceased by his younger brother, Kirk.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke with Marty Clark Ettinger officiating.

The family would like to thank the palliative care staff of CEHHC for the loving care that they provided Perry while he was a patient there.
