Ross Malcolm MacLeod

MacLeod, Ross Malcolm – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ross Malcolm MacLeod on Monday, April 14, 2025, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Ross was born in 1936 in West St. Andrews, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. He was a son of the late Homer Malcolm “Mack” and Susan “Susie” (Sibley) MacLeod.

Ross joined the military in 1957 and proudly served his country as a member of the Canadian Military Police and as part of the United Nations peacekeeping force. Through the military, he met his first wife and traveled all over Canada, Europe, Egypt, and Cyprus. After retiring from the military, he worked with the Commissionaires at the Halifax International Airport. Ross loved to travel, take camping trips with his family, and was an avid vegetable gardener. He used these skills when he became a leader with the Boy Scouts of Canada. Ross was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and was deeply respected by his fellow members for his dedication and charitable service. He was also a very active member of the United Church of Canada, where he volunteered significant time to church administration and weekly services. Ross loved the outdoors and, in his later years, enjoyed spending time on his back deck watching the birds at his birdfeeders.

Ross met his first wife, Joan Gale (Lally) MacLeod, in Montreal in 1960, and they married in 1961 in her home province of Manitoba. Together, through various military postings, they traveled all over Canada and Europe. They finally settled in his home community of West St. Andrews, where they built their home and raised their family until her passing in 1997. Ross remarried Myrna Dianne Hambleton in 1999, and over his remaining years, they traveled North America and Europe.

Besides Myrna, he is survived by his daughters, Janet MacPhee (Colin) and Karen King (Stewart); sons, Bruce MacLeod (Shelley D) and Earl MacLeod (Shelley J); step-sons, Scott Hebden (Tabitha) and Don Hebden (Erica); sisters, Cora Larsen (Darrel), Ellen McLeod (Joe), Inez Cooper, and Heather Boutilier (Ray); brothers-in-law, Fred Madower and Al Rothwell; grandchildren, Danny, Cara, Connie, and Ben; step-grandchildren, Dakota, Zach, Dawn, and Rogue; and great-grandchildren Taylor, Brooke, Malcolm, and Mariah.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Gale; daughter, Heather; sisters, Laverne Madower and Elsie Rothwell; and brothers-in-law, Larry McLeod and Gordie Cooper.

The family would like to acknowledge the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, particularly Dr. Henderson and Dr. Kabakambira, and all of the incredible nursing staff who took such good care of Ross in his final days. We will be forever grateful for the care and respect you gave him.

As per Ross’ wishes, there will be no funeral. There will be a Celebration of Ross’ Life for family and friends in West St. Andrews Community Hall at a later time.

As Ross was a giving person throughout his life, the family encourages those who wish to honor his memory to make a donation to any charity of their choice or simply bestow a kindness on someone else.
