Carol (Hare) Ashley

Ashley (Hare), Carol - passed away suddenly on July 6, 2024.

Born in Dutch Settlement, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Dela (Hurshman) Hare.

Carol was born premature. She was wrapped up and put in a shoe box and kept in the warming area above the stove. She was small and mighty from the very beginning. As an adult, she married and was a stay-at-home mom. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing softball, golfing, knitting, needle work and getting together with friends.

She is survived by her sons, Chris, Brian; and their father, David; grandchildren, Ryan (Britney), Kyle (Taylor) and Alysha; great-grandchild, Skylor; sisters, Angel Preeper, Betty Isenor.

She was predeceased by bothers, Reg, Louie, Billy, Lionel, Cecil, Laurie; sisters, Evelyn, Lorraine and Vivian.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

At her request there will not be a funeral service.

Carol always said she would like to have an Irish wake so there will be a Celebration of Life at 10 Preeper Lane, Lantz on July 20, 2024 at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

James "Jim" Robert Harold MacKay

MacKay, James “Jim” Robert Harold – age 68, of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital on June 30, 2024, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Moncton, NB, he was a son of the late Harold and Ada (Gunn) MacKay.

Jim worked in the woods driving a machine until 1990. He then went long-haul trucking from which he retired in 2014. He was an avid NASCAR fan, Toronto Blue Jays fan and Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Jim had been a cub scout leader in Upper Musquodoboit. He enjoyed his many trips to Florida or anyplace warm.

He will always be loved and missed by his wife of 46 years, Karen (Harnish); son, Cory; grandsons, Maddox and Logan; sisters, Corinne (Carmen), Judy (Wendell); mother-in-law, Jessie Harnish; sisters-in-law, Sherry (Randy), Janette (Steve), Heather (Craig); brothers-in-law, Darrell (Karen), Chris (Barb); many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by father-in-law, Doug Harnish.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2 – 4 p.m. in Upper Musquodoboit Fellowship Hall.

Memorial donations to Canadian Cancer Society or Parkinson Society Nova Scotia would be appreciated.

Walter "Bud" Jay Blakeney

Blakeney, Walter “Bud” Jay - age 83, of Porters Lake and formerly of Musquodoboit Harbour. It is with great sadness that the family of Walter “Bud” Blakeney announce his passing on June 30, 2024 in Dartmouth General. He was born West Jeddore, the second of four children to the late Walter and Clara (Myers) Blakeney.

Walter, known to his family and close friends as Bud, was a devoted, loving father, proud grandfather, and great grandfather. He owned and operated Blakeney’s Transfer for 32 years, after which time he worked for Classic Seafoods in Oyster Pond until his retirement. Walter enjoyed camping in the Annapolis Valley, sharing this experience with his sister, Pansy and brother-in-law, Hurson Maskell. At one time he enjoyed the occasional golf game, and annual fishing trips in May with a few close friends. In his retirement years, Walter spent his time gardening and building lighthouses. He was a man of faith, was active in his local church, and loved music. Walter enjoyed a family hymn sing, playing his autoharp and spoons, singing with his daughter, and singing in groups for special music in his church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marjorie Blakeney; children, Laura (Paul) Roberts and James (Danita) Blakeney; grandchildren, Joshua (Tessa) Blakeney and Jason (Lorrina) Blakeney; great-grandchild, Payton Blakeney; sister, Jean (Horst) Wiesner; sisters-in-law, Sharon (Peter) Coleman and Faye (Sheldon) Hawes; nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his sister, Pansy (Hurson) Maskell and brother, David (Laura) Blakeney.

A special thank you to family and friends for all their support during Walter’s illness. A very special thank you to Sharon and Peter. The family would also like to express their appreciation for the support and excellent care that was provided by the staff of the Three West wing in Dartmouth General in Walter’s final hours.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 3, 7 – 9 pm and a funeral service on Thursday, July 4 at 2 p.m., both in Jeddore United Baptist Church with Rev. Aubrey Deslatte officiating. A reception will follow the service.

Seymour Gerard Grady

Grady, Seymour Gerard - age 51, of Truro, passed away suddenly in his home on the morning of Saturday June 22, 2024.

He was born to Louessa (Morris) Grady and the late Gerard Grady in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia.

Seymour was a good friend to all he met. Known for his humour and antics, it was rare to be in his presence and not find yourself laughing or smiling. Seymour worked as a heavy equipment operator for various companies over the years. He left a lasting impact on his many co-workers and friends with his larger than life personality and charm. He was an avid jokester, even when things looked their worst, you could count on Seymour to make a joke about it. Always the life of a party and ready to greet you with a “Whats up, eh?”

His greatest accomplishment, his greatest joy, and his greatest pride came from his three

boys, Colby, Alex and Keegan. He loved his boys beyond measure.

Seymour leaves behind his best friend and mother of his children, Ellie Shipley-Landry (Peter); his boys, Colby (Natalie), Alex (Justina), Keegan (Marlee); as well as grandchildren, Ava and Mairi, and 4 more on the way; brother, Henry (Tricia); sisters, Janet Morris and Janice Greene; nephew, Andrew Greene; and mother, Louessa (Ronnie).

He is awaited in the afterlife by his father, Gerard; uncles, Melvin and Wayne; life long best friend, Kirk Debay; and furbaby, Montigo.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Seymour in Truro Horsemans Club, 288 Main St, Bible Hill, on Saturday, June 29th from 4-6 pm. A memorial service will be held in Mulgrave at a later date.

Robert James MacPherson

MacPherson, Robert James – age 55, of Bible Hill passed away unexpectedly at home on June 20, 2024.

Born in Halifax, he was the son of James MacPherson and the late Linda Ring.

Rob had a strong love for his family, he had a special love for his pets, Chevy and Pebbles and enjoyed his Pepsi. He took pride in whatever job he was working on. He was particular about the Montreal Canadiens and loved motorcycles. He was always willing to help anyone and he will be missed by many.

He will be forever loved by wife, Debbra (Lemmon); children, Damian MacPherson (Kenzie), Bryce and CJ Brooks; grandson, Sebastian; sister, Celeste (Donny) Skinner; father, James (Sandra); nieces, Sarah (Ross), Rebecca (Kale); nephews, Jordan (Leah), Bradley (Molly); great-niece, Sadie; mother-in-law, Glenda Lemmon; brother-in-law, Danny (Kathy).

Besides his mother, he was predeceased by son, Victor Brooks; aunt, Rhonda Ring; maternal grandparents, Victor and Beverly Ring; paternal grandparents, Leo and Lillian MacPherson; and father-in-law, Rollie Lemmon.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 30, 3 – 5 p.m. in Horseman’s Club, Truro.

John Donald "Don" Fraser

John Donald “Don” Fraser - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don on June 18, 2024; a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather.  He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Annie Faye (Watson); daughters, Joyce (Luther) Sears, Sheila (Dan) Chauvin, Heather Deyarmond (Mike), Janice (Greg) Miller; beloved grandchildren, Cassandra (Tanner), Allison (Mike), Sarah (Derek), Aaron, Nathan, Brendan (Elena), Chelsea (Chris), Lindsay (Oliver), Ben, Thomas and Annie; great-grandchildren, Eowyn, Emerson, Brandt, Logan, Luca, Eloise and Clara; sisters, Mary Boston and Lois (Bob) Kelly; brother, Irwin (Sandra) Fraser; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Louise Daine and brother, Jim Fraser. 

Don was born to Logan and Cassie (Parsons) Fraser in Medford, NS, a place that remained in his heart his whole life.  He began his lifelong carpentry career working with Parsons Construction in Moncton in the late 1950’s.  He and Faye met in Shubenacadie, married in 1962, then moved to Moncton where they lived and started their family.  In 1967, with three children in tow, they moved next door to Don’s parents in Shubenacadie.  Don loved his career and would often travel down to Cape Cod during the 1970’s to work with his cousins.  He was generous with his time, helping anyone in need - his children, siblings, friends, strangers.  He was able to do anything with wood - design, build, repair; fix vehicles and tinker with anything mechanical. He fixed many chairs whether as a project for someone or just because he found it abandoned on the side of the road.  And clocks.  He developed quite a passion for clocks and you could certainly see that just walking through his home or his shop.  He loved yard-saling and always insisted on a good bargain.  Fond memories of Don include camping with the old school bus in the 1970's; his competitive card playing, his travels with Faye to explore new places even as far away as Alaska; clam digging (how Don did enjoy a good feast of freshly dug clams); fishing at Spencer's Island; and of course, visiting with friends and family near and far.  Don had a special place in his heart for his dogs, Maggie and Nicki and his cats, Hobo, Garfield and most recently, Lucky.  They were never far from his side and it was not uncommon to see Lucky curled up on his puzzle or his woodworking project or hanging out in the shop.  He was proud of his children and grandchildren, always visiting wherever they lived and never without a bag of tools in tow or words of advice. He adored his great-grandchildren, his face lighting up when he saw them.  Don will be remembered for his love of his wife, his family, and repairing an endless amount of chairs.

A service will be held in Shubenacadie United Church on Friday, July 5, 2024 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the Church Hall.  A private family burial will take place the same day at Medford Cemetery, Kings Co. 4 p.m.  An open reception will follow in Kingsport United Church for those unable to make the Shubenacadie service.  Family flowers only and any donations may be made to the Shubenacadie United Church, Kingsport United Church or Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Bernardine Florence Morgan

Morgan, Bernardine Florence – Age 93, passed away June 14, 2024 in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Born in Hantsport, she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Agnes Florence (Smith) Tracey.

Mom had a good life. She and Max had a marriage filled with music and they loved traveling. She spent the last 16 years of her life living with us. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching them grow. She said we were the reason she got up in the morning. She will be greatly missed by all. 

Surviving are daughter, Barbara Tracey Mesheau and son-in-law, Bill Mesheau; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jerry) Mesheau Gray; Gregory (Melanie) Mesheau; great-grandchildren, Noah and Hannah Gray. Lily and Clark Mesheau; step-children, Beth (Vance), Dave (Joy), Wanda; beloved sister and best friend, Jean (Hank) Allen; sister-in-law, Murna Tracey; several nieces and nephews, including Dale Vaughan, Paulette Babin, Brian and Barry Allen.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Verna (Arthur) Vaughan; brothers, Gerald, Blake and Guy; husband, Max Morgan; step-children, Maxine and Carl.

Cremation has taken place.

Luther John Shaver

Shaver, Luther John – It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing on June 13, 2024 of Luther, our beloved son, brother and uncle, a truly cherished soul. He was 44 years old.

Luther was born in Halifax. He is survived by his parents, Noreen (Patriquin) and Harold Shaver, Dartmouth; his sister, Julie (Brad), niece, Angelique and nephew, Justin, Calgary; and brother, Michael (Lisa), Stockport, UK.

Luther was an extraordinary chef. Following high school graduation in Dartmouth, he attended the Culinary Institute of Canada in Charlottetown. His culinary career included work in restaurants in PEI, Bermuda, Lunenburg and Halifax. Most recently he enjoyed working with clients and colleagues at Metro Works, Halifax. He was a person who came in early to attend to multiple tasks to ensure that the catering team would be ‘out the door’ on time. He loved to share his knowledge, expertise and passion for food with those with whom he worked, with members of his family and with his circle of friends. Luther was a happy guy when he was preparing fine-dining meals for others. It was one way he showed his caring, concern and love.

Luther had an abiding interest in the Marvel Universe. He was a long-standing participant in podcasts with other enthusiasts from across the world. He occasionally moderated a podcast. But Luther always connected in a helpful way to the personal lives of other participants. Luther’s Facebook posts reflected his humour, his love of and concern for his family and friends, his determination to overcome the challenges in his life and the occasional image of figures from his Iron Man collection.

Entering his apartment was like entering a curated exhibit of Marvel Universe collectibles. With great care and thought, he undertook both collecting and displaying his figures, primarily Iron Man. His hobby became a significant source of relaxation and distraction from the demands of his work life.

Luther’s memory was photographic. He had an uncanny ability to verbally paint a visual canvas of people, places and events that were long forgotten by others. Those who had the opportunity to discuss basketball with him were astonished by his ability to relay statistics, stories of obscure players and predict future dynasties.

Luther’s sense of family was incredibly strong. It was a circle from which he drew strength and it was a place where he gave his unconditional love. As the youngest family member, he always looked up to his siblings and was proud of their varied accomplishments. As an uncle, he delighted in the laughter and joy of his niece, Angelique and nephew, Justin. He was always ready with a long gentle hug or a “robble, robble” to brighten their days. As a son, Luther was a central and highly appreciated part of his parent’s life.

Luther was a loyal friend who remained connected to buddies from his youth. He easily met strangers and engaged with them often in helpful ways. A found wallet would initiate a determined search for its owner. The bus driver on his regular run became a friend. Luther’s compassion for others will be remembered by those who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.

Luther was dearly loved and will be missed forever.

Michael Thomas Trask

Trask, Michael Thomas - of East Petpeswick, age 65, passed away peacefully June 11, 2024 surrounded by his wife, three children and sisters. Born in Musquodoboit Harbour, Mike was a son of the late Harry Trask and Elva (Marks) Crowder.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Kitty; his children, Mary (Farshad), Harry Michael, Matthew (Bunga) and his dog, Dolly; sisters, Pamela (Dan), Darlene; step-father, Robert Crowder; many cousins he truly cared for and loved, Cathy Faulkner, Doreen Sanford (Scott), Frankie Marks (Karen), Linda Marks (Peter), Mark Stevens (Cindy), Myretta Farrell (John D). Mike loved his extended family of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Dave (Val), Cindy (Mark), Jackie, Danny, Dan (Pamela); nieces, Becky, Bridgette, Jessica, Katie (Lance), Lisa (Peter), Michelle (Kevin); and nephews, Charlie (Wesley), Davie (Melissa), Dillon (Victoria), Donnie, Harrison (Amy), Isiah (Abby), Jamie (Emily), Thomas (Summer); many great nieces and nephews and many good friends.

Besides his parents, Mike was predeceased by niece, baby Kara Joye; his cousins, Ronnie Marks (Rhonda), Wayne Faulkner (Cathy); sister-in-law, Pam Young (Danny); and step-brother, Allen.

Mike was a fisherman out of East Petpeswick where he built his wharf and fish house naming it Hurricane Hotel. At age 19 he built his family home from logs which still is the family home today. As a child he loved dirt bikes, playing hockey and baseball, chess, math and comic books. In his later years he built a log camp known as Johnnys Brook. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, music, family and friends. Mike was a war history buff and loved to read. Mike really liked to tell stories and he told them well. He was often referred to as the Mayor by his close friends.

Mike’s love for his family, friends and community will be greatly missed. He was always there to welcome new community members and he loved visiting old and new friends. The family would like to thank everyone who has reached out to share their condolences. Your stories and memories have meant a lot and warmed our hearts. Thank you to all  friends for your visits and phone calls to Mike and for checking in on the family.  A thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Dartmouth General and Twin Oaks for their care and hard work. 

Cremation has taken place.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.

Brook Gordon Amos Langille

Langille, Brook Gordon Amos - aged 77, passed away suddenly on June 9, 2024, in Arborstone Enhanced Care, Halifax where he had resided for the past several months.  Born in Halifax, he was the eldest of four children of Catherine (Dolly) Langille.  Until his recent declining health necessitated more structured medical care, Brook lived his entire life in the community of Beaver Bank, in different spots on the family property, but tucked just far enough back in the woods to ensure he had his privacy.  A lifelong bachelor, Brook preferred the quiet of his own thoughts and the company of animals, although he permitted Anna to “fuss” over him.

Brook is survived by his sister, Victoria Swan, South Rawdon; brother, David Langille, Beaver Bank; brother-in-law, Stewart Carter, Beaver Bank; two nephews; three nieces and three grandnieces.  Besides his mother, he was predeceased by his sister, Anna Carter.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.  As per Brook’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service.  Donations in Brook’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

Gary McDowell

McDowell, Gary - With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gary McDowell, who left us on June 8, 2024, at the age of 77. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born in Enfield to the late John and Betty McDowell.

For 50 years, Gary worked as a dedicated heavy equipment operator, earning respect in the construction community. Outside of work he enjoyed his time at the camp, fishing and playing cards with friends. He was an avid NASCAR fan, rarely missing a Sunday race with the company of his devoted cat, Molly by his side. During the summer months, Gary could often be found tending to his vegetable garden, a hobby that brought him great satisfaction.

Gary was predeceased by his brother, Andrew; his sisters, Helen and Mary; and his daughter, Charmaine. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his children, Mark, Cindy (Kendall), Cathy, and Steven; his siblings, Janie (Tom) and Peter; grandchildren, Briana (James), Erin (Nick), Zach (Erin), Thane (Ashley); and great-grandchildren, Ethan and Audrey.

Special thank you to all the staff on 4.1; Peter with his special touch and humor and Kim, NP with PATH, with her heartfelt compassion in her care. 

A Celebration of Gary's Life and Legion Service will be held on June 22, 2024, 1-4 in the Enfield Legion Branch 133.

Joan MacDonald Hanes

Hanes, Joan MacDonald - Age 81, of Truro, passed away on June 6, 2024, surrounded by loved ones, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Roy Taggart and Lola (MacDonald) (Taggart) Ogden.

Joan was an elementary school teacher for 31 years. She graduated from the Nova Scotia

Teachers’ College and began her teaching career at the Caldwell Road Elementary School in Cole Harbour. Most of her teaching career, 27 years, was spent at the North River Elementary School just outside of Truro. Joan was a born teacher and continued to tutor children following her retirement. Joan loved children and she remembered most, if not all, the names of “her kids” over the years.

In addition to her parents Joan was predeceased by her husband, Norman Hanes; her stepfather, Tom Ogden; her sister, Judy English; her brothers-in-law, Jack Davy and Tom English; and her sister-in-law, Sandra Taggart.

Joan is survived by her children, Scott (Buffie) Hanes and Mary (Tobias) Spears; grandchildren, Kehisha, Malcolm, Ryan, William; siblings, Lorraine Davy, Ken (Carol) Taggart, Roy Taggart and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place.

As per Joan’s wishes, there will be no funeral but a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date with more details to follow.

Special thanks to the nurses and doctors in the Emergency Department and in the palliative care unit for the exceptional care given to Joan, and especially Trudie, RN, who was with us when we said goodbye. Also special thanks to Father Jim who led us in prayer after Joan’s passing.

Hazel "Nina" Gallant

Gallant, Hazel “Nina” - Hazel Gallant, lovingly known as 'Nanny', 'Nina', and 'Mudder' passed away peacefully on June 3, 2024, at the age of 95 surrounded by loved ones.

She was born in Bay de l'Eau, Newfoundland to Edward and Jessie Kearley.

As the last remaining Kearley sibling, Nina will be welcomed in Heaven with open arms by her brothers and sisters, Joseph, Tom, Annie, Rose, Marjorie, Alva and Effie. Nina was also predeceased by her children, Edward, Rick, Brenda, Florence, and Cecelia.

She is survived by her children, Gordon Barnes, PEI; Jessie (Kevin) Marriott, Nova Scotia; George (Sylvie) Barnes, Quebec; Millie (Randy) Cottrell, Ontario; Darlene (Rick) Pye, Nova Scotia; Sharon (Paul) Phillips, Cape Breton; and Kelly (Sharon) Brindle, Nova Scotia. She was also a beloved grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother to many across Canada.

Nina found joy in spending time with her large family, playing cards well into the night (as long as she wasn't losing and you agreed to play by her rules), and enjoying a delicious French Vanilla Coffee from Tim Hortons. Her love for her family was evident early on as she was forced to make decisions that would alter the journey of many of her children. She lived with the regret of these decisions until the very end.

She was a lady who had the strength of four lumberjacks and was known for her remarkable hands, which she used to make homemade bread for many years. There was always a pot of tea with bread and molasses for those visitors who dropped in unannounced to have a chat.

Growing up in Newfoundland, Nina developed a deep love for seafood, relishing anything that came from the sea. The best pot of fish and potatoes, Cod's heads stew or a pan of salt cod and pork scraps could be served up at a moment's notice. One of her favorite places in the world was Grand Le Pierre, where she cherished spending time with her sisters and being surrounded by family and friends. A quick rip "across the gut" or "Up Yonder” to Bay de l'Eau in a boat put the biggest smile on her beautiful face and she talked about these adventures on a regular basis and once you got her talking, she could go on forever!

Nina shared a beautiful life with her spouse, Puppa "Charlie" who passed away in 2008 but she was always happy to recount the many memories she made with Charlie. From hunting caribou in the North to digging clams on a backroad beach in PEI, these two were never far apart from each other. She made many friends over her 95 years and the loss of this light will be felt far and wide especially by her special friend, Sue from Glen Haven.

Those who knew Nina will remember her profound love, which was felt to the core by anyone fortunate enough to be loved by her. When she told you she loved you, she meant it and was quick to say to you, "And don't you forget it."

Nina will be dearly missed and forever remembered for the love and joy she brought to everyone she encountered.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in July. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to River Glen at Glen Haven Manor in New Glasgow.

W. Ann Stewart

Stewart, W. Ann – Age 62, of Stewiacke and formerly of Sackville, passed away June 2, 2024 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro surrounded by family.

Born in New Glasgow, she was the daughter of the late Brian and Phyllis (MacNaughton) Phelan.

Ann loved to travel and was the best Mama Bear to her family. She received her early childhood education degree from Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro. Ann was the beloved Director of First Friends Daycare. Her passing leaves a huge void in the Daycare family and beyond. She was compassionate, funny, thoughtful, giving, and very dedicated to her career. Her legacy will live on in the daycare she helped to build throughout her 35 years there, 31 of which she was the director where she created an atmosphere of love and acceptance for all.

She will always be loved and missed by husband, Eric; daughter, Christina (Tyson); son, Benjamin (Samantha); stepchildren, Shelley (Darryl), Trish (Craig), Al (Cindy); seven grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; brothers, Patrick, Brian (Cathy), Mark (Deanna); several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, June 10 in Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre, 6 – 8 p.m.

Interment will be at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Diabetes Canada would be appreciated.
