John "Jack" Thomas Clancey

Clancey, John “Jack” Thomas - It is with sadness that we announce John "Jack" Thomas Clancey, 86, of Dartmouth, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2024 in London Hall Assisted Care Facility, surrounded by his loving family.

Jack, born in 1937 to Gerald and Catherine (Edwards) Clancey in Dartmouth, was active in hockey and baseball in his youth and enjoyed the odd game of golf. He married Louise "Tootsie" Poirier in 1961 in Halifax, and together they raised three daughters, Pamela, Susan and Carolyn. He worked at Air Canada for many years, where he made valuable lifetime friends. He retired at the young age of 56. Truly a "Jack" of all trades, Jack was a self-taught handyman who, with the help of his brothers and friends, built his first family home in Sunset Acres, Dartmouth. Years later, with much assistance in design and sweat and laughs from his son-in-law, Terry Charlton, he built his "pride and joy" - the "camp" on Kitty Lane in Liscomb, Nova Scotia. This would be the one place that truly captured his heart in this world and he spent as much time there as he possibly could - perched on a small rise overlooking Spanish Ship Bay in Guysborough County, this would be all the bliss Jack would ever need.  Jack was a man of deep Catholic faith. He was involved in his parish in many different ways over the years. He loved ushering and enjoyed bringing Eucharist to the sick and elderly. He loved his church and was pretty particular about arriving on time!! He had a special devotion to the Divine Mercy and it remained with him until his last days.  He never missed the opportunity to pray for his family, especially his grandchildren. Every day he loved reading the scriptures, saying his special devotions, and in his later years, watching the Mass on TV with his beloved when he could no longer attend. Jack’s generosity and kindness was often displayed in acts of charity such as bringing groceries to those in need, doing odd jobs or even dog walking when requested.  Jack was an avid sports fan all his life, with an unwavering loyalty to the New York Yankees and the Detroit Red Wings. One of his favorite stories involved a road trip he took with his brothers in the late 50's to attend a New York Yankees game in New York - he got to see his all-time hero, Mickey Mantle play and always had a little twinkle in his eye when recalling the adventure.  Jack loved doing the crossword puzzle each day and asking everyone “what's a 4 letter word ...” He enjoyed a good laugh and telling light-hearted stories involving his friends and family.  Not one to miss out on the "good things in life" he enjoyed the music of his era, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and his favorite, Patsy Cline, but, at the insistence of his daughters, he became a big fan of Elton John and The Eagles - he was full of surprises, he was. "Play something close to the floor" would be a recurring phrase when asked if there was anything he wanted to hear.  Regarding his abilities as a handyman, St. Peter better hope the gates are up to code, perfectly aligned, swinging smoothly (without squeaks!) and they better indeed be Pearly white - because there WILL be an inspection - but, no worries, if anything is amiss it can surely be remedied with a little WD-40 or some Red/Green tape and a little muscle and help from "the persuader' (his go-to crowbar). Jack will then have a nice cup of hot tea, something sweet and ask to be pointed in the direction of his much missed loved ones. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Louise; his daughters, Pam (Patrick) Collins, Susan Charlton, Carolyn (Tom) Vess; 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Arthur (Joan), Frank, Kenneth (Ann), Billy (Ann); sister, Audrey Conrad; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Catherine; brother, Gerald; sisters, Barbara Noyes and Bernice Pelletier; brother-in-law, Teddy Conrad; son-in-law, Terry Charlton; grandson, Justin Charlton; and great-grandson, George van Tol.

Visitation will be April 2nd, 2024 from 1-3pm and 6-8pm in St. Thomas More Church Hall.  Funeral Mass will be held April 3rd, 2024 at 10am St. Thomas More Church, Dartmouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Frank Zemlyak

Zemlyak, Frank - Age 75, of Murphy’s Cove. It is with a sense of loss and deep sadness that we share the passing of Frank Zemlyak, a loving husband, father and experienced scientist on March 5, 2024. Frank will be dearly missed by his wife of 27 years, Anita (Lamey); and his daughters, Rosalee and Rebecca; and grandchildren, Savannah and Evan.

Born in Rijeka, Croatia, his family emigrated to Canada through Pier 21 in the 1950s.  Frank is survived by his sister, Sonya of Halifax; and brother, Luke (Vivien) of Calgary. He is predeceased by his father, Franz; mother, Matilda; step-mother, Elvira; and brother, Joseph.

Frank was a longtime resident of the Ship Harbour area, first residing in DeBaies Cove and recently in Murphy’s Cove. Frank was a man of many talents and interests: a scuba diver, an amateur astronomer, a wonderful chef, an excellent craftsman and a world traveller. He enjoyed sailing his Alberg 29 Tachyon and sailed Boston-Halifax on the tall ship Mir. He and Anita enjoyed many visits to Europe, especially to Sweden to see dear friends, Leif and Marie Anderson.

Frank commenced his remarkable career in Oceanography in 1976, joining the Chemical Oceanography Division at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. Transitioning to the Ocean Sciences Division in the mid-1990s, Frank continued to play a pivotal role in Canadian and international programs dedicated to unraveling the intricacies of ocean climate. His work took him to the Arctic and Antarctic regions and around the globe.

Frank was proud of his record of accumulated sea time spent conducting research on board the ships of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans including the CSS Hudson, CSS Baffin and CSS Dawson. For over a decade he was involved in an internationally coordinated hydrographic survey of the Labrador Sea. Data from this work contributed to the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

He participated in the ground-breaking journey on the Swedish icebreaker Oden in 1991, when this historic expedition marked the first voyage to the North Pole by a non-nuclear powered ship. Frank participated in many expeditions to high latitudes on international vessels, including several expeditions on the I/B Oden, German R/V Polarstern and the Norwegian R/V Lance.

In 1994, he visited the North Pole again aboard the Louis S. St-Laurent as the Coast Guard vessel, along with the USCGC Polar Sea, becoming the first North American surface vessels to reach the North Pole.
During these expeditions he always made good friends with all aboard, not only the scientific party, but the whole crew from the deckhands to the captain. He was a natural entertainer and was often the life of the party on these long expeditions to remote regions.

His retirement in 2006 marked the end of an era, yet his legacy lives on in the scientific advancements he contributed to and in the memories of those fortunate enough to work alongside him. Frank always demonstrated a commitment to his work that went above and beyond the call of duty even under the most adverse circumstances that often would occur while working at sea.

Let us remember Frank as a man who embraced life with humour, love and quiet strength. He's now on his next adventure and will be missed by all who knew him.

Frank’s family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Petpeswick Yacht Club, 434 East Petpeswick Road, Musquodoboit Harbour, on Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 2 pm to 4 pm.

Donations in his name may be made to the ALS Society of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.

David Wyn Jones

Jones, David Wyn - 1943 – 2024  Born in Prestatyn, North Wales, Wyn attended Ysgol Ardudwy in Harlech and met his future wife, Carole there. Following graduation, Wyn worked in sales for a book publishing company and spent his spare time playing his double base at various clubs in London and Liverpool. In 1967, he and Carole married in Harlech and emigrated to Canada. A daughter, born in 1971 and a son in 1978 completed his family. The following years were spent in Ontario working in the sale of art, ceramic tiles, and interior design. In 1983, he was awarded the SAM (Sales and Marketing) award and, in 1987, he opened his own interior design company in Eden Mills.

Retiring in 2007, Wyn and Carole moved to Nova Scotia where he designed their new home overlooking the ocean. Retirement years were spent travelling throughout different islands in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Wyn was a self-taught artist and chose to paint scenes from nature around his home. He was an avid reader of historical novels and could always be counted on to launch a stimulating conversation on past and present politics.  Many hours were spent listening to classical music and watching the ever-changing movement of the ocean. He loved to cook and always insisted that a touch of wine improved any recipe! Throughout his life, Wyn always had a dog – wherever he went, so did his dog. His latest one, still a pup, walked with him daily along the shore.

Wyn was proud of his children. The birth of each one, their accomplishments and their weddings were special highlights in his life – exceeded only by the addition of three grandchildren to his family!

Wyn’s life was unexpectedly cut short on March 4, 2024, at the age of 81, by cancer and he passed away, as he wished, at home to the sound of the waves.

Wyn is survived by his wife, Carole; daughter, Carys and husband, Ian; son, Gareth and wife, Viki; grandchildren, Anwyn, Benjamin and Elliot; and, in the UK, his sister, Megan (Jim) Frost; and nieces, Rhiannon and Bethan.

He is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Gladys Jones.

Our thanks to the Home Care Team, the paramedics and the staff at MAID who helped to fulfill Wyn’s last wishes.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 24th in The Old School, Musquodoboit Harbour at 3 p.m.

He had a long-retired life which he made the most of, largely due to a liver transplant he had more than 23 years ago. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing the mandolin and fiddle with family and friends at kitchen parties in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. He loved bluegrass music, fiddle music and old-time country songs. As the country song, Choices, says, “we live and die by the choices we make” and Ed did that, beating the system.

He will always be loved and missed by sons, Dwayne, Kevin (Chrissy); grandsons, Justin and Matthew; brother, Bobby (Janet) Horne; sister, Debbie (Benny) DeBay; two nieces and two nephews; aunts, Winnie Reid and Viola Alyward and extended family in New Brunswick.

He was predeceased by his wife, Judith; brother, Roger; and sister-in-law, Sandra.

Cremation has taken place.

A private family service will be held at a later date in Preeper Hill Cemetery, Shubenacadie.

Thanks to the VON staff for allowing Ed to stay in his home as long as he did. Many thanks to the CEHHC staff for the kindness and care shown to Ed, particularly on the East Wing of the second and third floor.

Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation or your local SPCA.
