Margaret "Margie" Elinor (Hutchison) MacKay

MacKay (Hutchison), Margaret “Margie” Elinor – It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Margaret “Margie” MacKay after a brief illness.

Margie was born in 1941 in Baddeck to the late Daniel and Margaret Hutchison.

In her young years, she worked at Campbell’s Market (aka Mappo’s) and was co-owner of MacKay’s Dairy in Baddeck until it was lost to a fire. In 1974 she moved with her family to Shubenacadie where her husband pursued a career in harness racing and she worked various jobs, most notably at Scott’s Restaurant in “Shubie”, as a security officer at Stanfield International Airport in Halifax and finally retiring as a receptionist at Elmsdale Animal Hospital.

Though she lived almost 50 years in Shubenacadie, Margie loved Cape Breton and visited any chance she could get. She knew so many people and wanted to know everyone, so if she didn’t know you, she’d ask you! She was always trying to win the lottery. She played many bingo sessions over the years, was known to have a roll or two on the slot machines at the gaming room and always made sure Shirley bought the 6/49 tickets on time. She won some and lost some, but she loved trying! She was quick-witted, kind, strong willed, an excellent cook and she had a great laugh that ill be dearly missed (along with her famous Strawberry Freezer Jam!).

Faye Alcorn

Alcorn, Faye – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Faye Alcorn of Truro. In her 92nd year, Faye passed away in Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche, surrounded by the love of her family.

She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her children, Jack (Della), Jeff (Esther), Jamie and Glen; grandchildren, great grandchildren and cousins.

Faye was predeceased by her parents, Perley and Hilda MacDonald, her husband, Robert “Bob” and her sons, Jim and Gregory.

Faye was born in Edmundston, NB as the only child to parents Perley and Hilda MacDonald. She spent her childhood years in Atholville and Campbellton, NB and after graduation from Campbellton High School, Faye ventured to Halifax, working as a secretary with Eatons. Her life’s path was set when she met and fell in love with Bob in Halifax. Accompanying him to air force training in Ontario she worked in Toronto as a secretary with an insurance company. After Robert’s training they moved to the Annapolis Valley where Bob was stationed in Greenwood and it was there that they started a family. Bob’s work with the Air Force also took them to Manitoba and PEI, eventually settling in Tatamagouche.

Faye loved her family, and they were the center of her life. She was a loving and strong woman, even in the face of life’s adversities.  Her belief in an afterlife was strong and even though it pained her immensely to leave us, she knew her spirit would continue with God.

In keeping with Faye’s wishes, a graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, July 7 at 2 p.m. in Lockerby’s Cemetery, Tatamagouche.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Donald Frederick Lounder

Lounder, Donald Frederick – Age 89, of Halifax, died at home on June 25, 2023. Born in Moncton, Don was a son of the late Dorothy and Burtis Lounder.

He attended Moncton High School, Dalhousie University and Fredericton Teachers College.

He was predeceased by his brother, James; infant daughter, Rosanna; and his first wife, Shirley (Beatty). He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Eve and their children, Amy, Cecelia, and Victoria. Don is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Brodersen (Ken); his children, Carolyn, Cheryl and Eric (Cub); ex-wife, Shirley Scott; and by numerous grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He loved all his family very deeply, was always interested in their well-being, looked forward to visits, and reached out to them when possible.

Don will be remembered for his love of teaching, passion for projects and his sense of humour.

He began teaching in the school system in the 1960s, found his home working as a guidance counsellor in the 1970s and continued working right up until his stroke at age 87, when he was teaching English online to international students.

Don's projects included digging up impossibly large granite boulders to expand the garden, making bread, roasting coffee, building geodesic domes, sailing, learning to play the 'cello in his ninth decade, starting a weaving business, spending many months in China teaching English, crafting a hammered dulcimer, weaving beads into bracelets and finally, spending many hours rug-hooking. His habit was to order every available book on a topic and make notes in the margins as he read. He was an autodidact in geology, boatbuilding, the history of China, the tarot, eastern philosophy, spiritual practices and cultural traditions, including Zen Buddhism, to name a few.

Don loved doing things outdoors, especially with dogs, discovering and establishing paths around Long Lake, before and after it became a provincial park. The many dogs of Don's long life came and went; outstanding among them were Britta, the German Shepherd (1970s and 1980s), and Raya, the Jack Russell (2005-18).

Even in his last few weeks, when his faculties were increasingly failing him, Don was quick to quip and had a ready chuckle.

Most of all though, Don will be remembered for his kindness and patience with people—big and small. He could both encourage you and have a saucy response to challenging circumstances. He had a twinkle in his eye right up to his last day of life.

Don and his family were very grateful to the individuals and organizations who made it possible for him to stay at home during the last months of his life. This includes the many caregivers from Home Instead, the team at Continuing Care (NSHA), Dr. Jeremy Smith, and the Palliative Care team, to whom he gave his last saucy answers.

A Celebration of Life will be arranged for friends and family in late summer.

In his memory, you may wish to donate to Doctors without Borders (MSF), any charity that supports girls and women in sport, or one of your choice.

Gordon Everett Matheson

Matheson, Gordon Everett – Gordon Everett Matheson, known affectionately as "Gully" to his friends and family, passed away on June 20th, 2023, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre with his family by his side. Born in 1942, in Brookfield, he was a son of the late Tom and Florence Matheson and was the 8th of 10 children.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Myrna; daughter, Pam (Oleg Vydykhan); son, Heath; granddaughters, Katya, Gertie and Talia, who lovingly referred to him as their “Pappy”; sisters, Edna Graham, Wilma Avila, and Letha Mowatt; brothers, Johnny, Hugh, Winston, and Vaughn (Gab). He was predeceased by his sister, Verna Locke and, brother Ken.

In his youth, he and his brothers were a formidable force on the ice, and his love of hockey would remain a lifelong passion. By his mid-thirties, after a successful career in banking and business, Gordon chose to pursue his dream of becoming an engineer. He graduated from the University of New Brunswick as a civil engineer and took great pride in his work with the government of New Brunswick, overseeing the construction of hospitals and schools. Finishing his career as Director of Construction Services, he was widely recognized for his leadership, expertise and commitment to his field. Retirement brought Gordon back to his hometown of Brookfield, where he embraced an active lifestyle as an avid golfer, curler, hockey player, and pickleball enthusiast. Gordon and Myrna had many great adventures travelling together around the world. From Japan to the Netherlands, Australia to New Zealand, and Scotland to Ireland and Iceland, Myrna’s travel journal documents adventures filled with natural wonders, historical locations and, most importantly to Gordon, impressive industrial sites. Gordon had an immense love for cars and could effortlessly name and describe every car he had ever owned, and there were many! He possessed a remarkable talent for building and fixing things. His workshop, organized with military precision, was the envy of all. There was no project too challenging for Pappy, and if you knew him, he had probably helped you with something. Always keen to be the first adopter, Pappy was proud of his electric cars, field of Haskap berries, and his substantial array of solar panels. In his later years, one of Pappy's greatest joys was supporting his granddaughters in their volleyball pursuits. Known to volleyball players across the province as the dedicated grandfather who never missed a game, he followed their progress across the country with unwavering enthusiasm. A recent highlight was witnessing Talia's Dalhousie Tigers secure the AUS championship and National bronze medal— moments he celebrated with immense pride. Beloved by his family, Gordon positively impacted the lives of countless individuals and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Many thanks to the Palliative Care Team at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, the doctors and nurses and the many people who brought our family comfort by calling, messaging and visiting while Gordon was in the hospital. Rest in peace Pappy.

Gordon’s service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Knox United Church in Brookfield, with Reverend Michael Henderson officiating. A reception will follow. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Knox United Church, Canadian Cancer Society or a local charity of your choice.

Finding life-long friends was a skill he had. He became well-known as the community papa to the children in his community and the man who had the tool if you were in need. He was the most compassionate and non-judgmental man you would ever meet and was always smiling. Lenny will be remembered for his silly sense of humor and even when he began to feel weaker, the kindness he showed to all and his smile touched the hearts of many, that will forever be cherished.

Remember Lenny for his positive outlook on life and we were so lucky to have him for as long as we did, and he always longed for others to be happy.

It’s a state of mind and I’m always there, it could be how you’re raised or a place you call home, but it is writing a crazy story and it’s making it your own. With a little more love and a lot less hating. Be who you want to be because everybody else is taken.
