Bernard Isaac Myatt

Myatt, Bernard Isaac – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing our father and brother, Bernie of Westville on May 14, 2023 at the age of 81.

Born in Little Dover, he was a son of the late Donald and Evelyn (Bouchie) Myatt.

After living in Ontario for many years, he moved to Westville to be nearer to his family. Bernie enjoyed a lifetime career as a burner mechanic. His love of country music, friends and family, were the things that made him happiest. You could always hear him singing a tune whenever the opportunity was put in front of him. In fact, he actually won a singing contest a short time before his illness progressed. It was what he loved to do. Bernie will be sadly missed by all his family and friends, especially the ones he made at Stellarton Legion and his AA group where he was mentor to many participants.

Bernie is survived by his four sons and two daughters, Bart (Millie), Newfoundland; Kara, Florida; Blaize (Tracey), Timberlea; John (Tanya), North Carolina; Laurie (Aaron), Massachusetts; Bernie (Hollie), Halifax; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; as well as brothers, Dave, Canso; Harvey, Cole Harbour; sisters, Vera, Centerville; Sylvia (Harold), Mount William; and Bernadette (Ray), Westville.

Bernie was predeceased by his brothers, Bert, Bill, Fred, and Donnie; and sisters, Gloria and Beatrice.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life for Bernie will be held in Stellarton Legion Branch 28 from 2 - 4 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2023.

Burial will take place at a later date.

We, the family of Bernie, would like to thank all the wonderful nurses and doctors on the fourth floor and on the palliative care unit of the Aberdeen Hospital for providing such loving, compassionate care during his illness, not only to Bernie but to our family as well.

We ask that any donations in his memory be made to the Aberdeen Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, or the Stellarton Legion Branch 28.

John "Wayne" Hartlen

Hartlen, John “Wayne” – It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Wayne Hartlen, of Fletchers Lake on May 8, 2023, at the age of 80. Wayne passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Wayne will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Zelda (Erskine); son, Ryan (Kim); grandson, Luke; brothers, Eric (Joan) Hartlen, and Greg (Lee) Hartlen along with nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and the community of St. John’s United Church. He was predeceased by his parents, Eric and Muriel (Cane) Hartlen.

Wayne grew up in Bedford and Fletchers Lake, the oldest of three boys. In 1975 he graduated with his Bachelor of Divinity from the Atlantic School of Theology and was ordained by the United Church of Canada. He served pastoral charges in Welsford, NB, and Woodside Imperoyal Dartmouth. He also completed an internship in chaplaincy at Dalhousie and Mount Saint Vincent Universities. In 1984 Wayne earned his Masters of Social Work and followed his passion to help others working for Children’s Aid. He then completed a year of postgraduate study at the North Shore Counseling Centre in BC, after which he spent time with the Stratton Project, Crosby House, and in private practice. In 2015 Wayne unexpectedly had his leg amputated above the knee due to vascular complications, which although changed his life, did not change his resolve or positive outlook. In 2022 he was diagnosed with vascular dementia. He was a character. And he was memorable - you generally didn’t forget meeting him. He was an extrovert and thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people. His smile was constant and his laugh easily identifiable in a crowd. He was an avid reader, sports enthusiast, loved the outdoors - camping, canoeing, fires by the lake, and spent many happy moments at Berwick Camp each summer. In recent years his favorite pastime was doing “kid things” with his grandson, Luke. His sense of humor was larger than life and he was quick to speak his mind but was also a great listener.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the many healthcare professionals who cared for Wayne over the course of his journey in recent years.

A celebration of life will be held at St. John’s United Church, 3360 Highway 2 in Fall River, Monday, May 15th at 11 a.m. with reception to follow.

Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Alzheimer Society, The War Amps or charity of choice.

Patricia "Patsy" Lemmon

Lemmon, Patricia “Patsy” Ann – Age 82, of Dean, passed away May 4, 2023 in Braeside Home for Special Care, Middle Musquodoboit, with her son Michael and his wife Marion by her side.

Born in Plympton, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Lillian Amero.

Patsy enjoyed doing crafts, spending time in her flower garden, baking, and going on walks with Rita and friends. She loved her time with her grandchildren and enjoyed camping in the summer in earlier years with Kenny and Peggy.

She will be sadly missed by her sons Roger, Michael (Marion) Lemmon; stepdaughter, Brenda (Sonny) Nickel; grandchildren, Alex, Jessica Lemmon; Brandon and Ashley Marshall; great-grandsons, Jackson Lemmon, Blaze and Kingston Marshall; brother, Wayne Amero; sisters, Juanita (Frank) Gavel, Linda Sullivan, Blanch Rice, Judy, Betty Amero; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Herman Lemmon; brothers, Richard, Keith, Raymond, and Dennis; sisters, Eunice, and Nora.

Visitation will be Sunday 7-9 p.m. and funeral service Monday at 2 p.m. both in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean with Rev. David LeBlanc officiating. Burial to follow in Lemmon Hill Cemetery.

Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation-Braeside.

Jean Axworthy

Axworthy, Jean – passed away May 1, 2023.

I have always loved going on new adventures. I travelled well with these two ladies, Liz and Danica. We have been to some beautiful places and shared many laughs.

Well as you can see, I am travelling solo now. I finally have some control over this COPD.

Thanks to my family and friends for their support and love. I appreciate the help and guidance from the doctors. I am forever grateful.

Michael Donald McFetridge

McFetridge, Michael Donald –Age 72, died on Saturday, April 22, 2023 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

He was the only son of the late Donald and Florence (Mitchell) McFetridge. Michael was born and lived much of his life in Middle Musquodoboit.

Michael loved music, playing several instruments. In his youth, he and his friends formed a band called the “Weads of Eden” which later went to playing in more bands. He worked for many years in Dartmouth, Milford and finished his working career as an employee with Canada Post. Community minded, he was involved with the beginning changes to Musquodoboit Valley Bicentennial Theatre and Middle Musquodoboit Cemeteries Committee.

Michael leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Marilyn (Redden); son, Matthew (Eva); daughter, Sarah (Collin); granddaughter, Monica (the apple of his eye); grandson, Isaiah (Jasmine); sister, Ellen McFetridge; many extended family members.

A graveside service will be held on May 3, at 2 p.m, in Pioneer Cemetery, Middle Musquodoboit followed by a Celebration of Life in the Bicentennial Theatre.

Arrangements are entrusted to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Johanna "Joan" Denhertog

Denhertog, Johanna “Joan” – It is with great sadness that the family of Johanna “Joan” Denhertog, beloved mother, sister, Oma, aunt, and friend, announce her passing.

Born in Leiden, the Netherlands, as Johanna Bakker, she was one of ten children of Antoon and Helena Bakker. She survived the hungry years of the war and experienced the liberation of the Netherlands by the Canadian troops. There she married Adrianus Cornelis den Hertog on September 20, 1950. They, with their daughter Hendrika and Johanna’s sister, Helena Bakker, boarded the Grote Beer in Rotterdam and immigrated to Canada in 1956, settling in Nova Scotia. After living in Halifax, the Valley, Martin’s Point and Western Shore, they built a house in Nine Mile River, where she lived until February of 2020.  Johanna worked at Mount Saint Vincent University then Hydrostone Cleaners for many years. After retiring, she owned and operated “Joan’s Flowers”, growing and selling flowers at the Farmers market at Keiths Brewery. She and Adrian were board members of the market, active until his health failed in the 1990s.

When living alone became difficult, she moved to the Berkeley in Bedford, then in 2022 she moved to the Admiral in Dartmouth. She enjoyed the activities and friends she met at these two places until she left us peacefully on April 19, 2023.

Left to miss her are her children, Hendrika (Eric) Brown, Patricia (Ed) Perkins, and William (Elaine Francis) Denhertog; grandchildren, Michael (Heather) Brown, David Perkins, Alison Perkins and Ben Perkins; great-grandchildren, MacKenzie Brown, Kaydance Perkins and Landen Perkins; her dear sister, Leny; and nieces, Joanne Steadman, Charlene Graves and Maria Kennie; and sisters, Maria, Theresa; and nieces and nephews in in the Netherlands and many, many friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Adrian; granddaughter, Joanna Perkins; son-in-law, Ed Perkins; brother-in-law, Charles Dill; nephews, Peter Dill, Nick Graves; and six of her siblings in the Netherlands.

At her request, there will be no public service. Her cremated remains will be interred at a private family burial beside her husband and granddaughter.

While Johanna loved flowers, she loved children more and the loving care she got at the Admiral was exceptional. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the causes she believed in:

Anne Gertraude (Lange) Maslow

Maslow (Lange), Anne Gertraude – of Lake Echo, was a woman of strong faith in God, JHWH, and was looking forward to dancing with Jesus and I can comfortably say she slipped into his presence peacefully on Monday, April 10, 2023 at the age of 84.

She was born in Munster/Westfallen Germany to the late Albert Karl and Frieda Lange.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lil Maslow; brothers, Wolfgang and Conrad; and sisters, Uta and Helga.

Surviving are her sons, Daniel (Lisa), Ontario; their children, Emma and Erin; Jonathan (Jackie), Texas; their children, AlexaJo, Kaelah, Isabelle, and Zachary; and great-grandchildren, Asher, Aubrey-Anne, CJ, and one on the way.

Anne immigrated to Toronto in 1957 to help her brother, Wolfgang with his growing family. She returned to Germany for 2 years to study nursing at her brother's insistence. After graduating, she returned in 1961 to continue helping her brother and started working in several Toronto Hospitals.

She married Lil Maslow in 1963 and then after starting a family of her own in Toronto moved to Lake Echo in 1977. As a nurse, she continued to help people until she retired from the Birches Nursing Home in 2003.

She lived a life of thankfulness, enjoying many simple walks on Lawrencetown and Conrad's beach, she loved the ocean. Anne and Lil loved to explore their own backyard and would tell of their many finds around Nova Scotia from the beaches, winding roads, and Bed and Breakfast they would stay at.

As any that knew from talking to Anne, she lived a life of peace and grace in the service of others. She humbly acknowledged life’s blessings and persevered through the difficulties in her life, including the loss of her husband. Anne loved nothing more than visits with her family and friends, blessing those that came. Anne's love of Israel and the people of God could be noticed from the moment you walked through the door.

As the family opens up the many cards from Anne's stay in the hospital, the incredible amount of sentiment about the lives she affected is overwhelming. Her simple trust in her Savior the Lord Jesus Christ and the peace she drew from that spilled out to those that she came in contact. She touched so many people in her gentle way, and the family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers while she was in the hospital.

The family would like to thank Dartmouth General Hospital 4th-floor staff for their attention and care. She told anyone that came to visit or called her of the excellent care she was receiving and was always so thankful to everyone that helped her.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 5th at 1 p.m., in Lawerencetown Cemetery, 3765 Lawrencetown Road, Highway 207, Lawrencetown. A small reception will follow the service, friends, and family are welcome to gather at Seaforth Hall, 6060 NS-207, Seaforth from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Shirley Ann Hines

Hines, Shirley Ann - It is with great sadness that the family of Shirley Ann (Thompson) Hines announce her sudden passing on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, at the age of 74.

Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Dwight and Michael (Crystal); grandsons, Evan, Ethan and Kyle; siblings, Norman Thompson (Linda) and Joyce Brown (Alan); nieces, nephews, and numerous family members and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Clinton, who passed away on March 17, 2023; and her parents, Laurie and Jenny Thompson.

Shirley spent many years working in the office at Elmsdale Lumber. Shirley and Clinton valued the relationships they made over the years with their work family.

Cremation has taken place.  

A Celebration of Life will take place at her sister’s home on Sunday, April 23, from 2 -5 p.m., at 36 Alderney Drive, Enfield.

Maurice R. St. Onge

St. Onge, Maurice R. – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved son, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Maurice R. St. Onge at the age of 86.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, he was the eldest of ten children. Maurice left home at the young age of 17 to join the Royal Canadian Navy. He was accepted into the Navy’s Technical Apprentice Training Plan in 1954, completed new entry training and then two years of basic trades training. After initial coursing, he graduated as a P2ER and was posted to the Fleet and stationed in Halifax.

Over the next 21 years he served onboard HMC Ships St. Croix, La Hulloise, Bonaventure, Ottawa and Skeena. He also enjoyed his time spent as an instructor at the Damage Control School.

After an eventful career, where he attained the rank of CPO2, he decided to retire from the Navy to spend more time with his family. A new opportunity arose when he applied for and was successfully hired by Ontario Hydro Nanticoke GS. He began his new career in 1976 as a Shift Mechanical Maintainer, helping to commission the station and within three years he was a Trades Management Supervisor. Throughout his tenure he supervised, instructed and mentored countless people before retiring in 1994.

An attack of appendicitis landed him in the hospital where he met his future bride, Gloria “Honey”. With her parents’ blessing, they were married in 1959 followed by the arrival in 1960 of the first of their four children. While raising their children he was very involved in all their sporting and extracurricular activities. He enjoyed playing and coaching hockey, playing baseball, guiding Cubs and Scouts, teaching Sunday School, operating the skate shop at Shannon Park Arena, volunteering as a baby rocker at the IWK, and carpentry.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Gloria (Wirrell); sons, Rene, Andre (Jeannette), Marc (Susan); daughter, Lisa (Heith) Klaassen; grandchildren, Kaleigh, Steven, David, Jessica, Craig, Amanda, Peter and Zachary; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Maurice was a very loving and kind man who appreciated the love, care and support of his family during his time of need. His family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the medical staff at both the Dartmouth General and Twin Oaks Memorial Hospitals, Palliative Care team and Continuing Care Nurses.

A very humble person, Maurice has requested that, in lieu of a funeral, his family gets together to celebrate and reminisce on a loving life that they all shared. Cremation has taken place.

Daniel Arthur John Holland

Holland, Daniel Arthur John – aged 61 of Lawrencetown, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on April 18, 2023. Danny will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 37 years, Wendy (White); children, Nicole (Stephen), Stacey, Kevin (Madi); sister, Mary Wolfe; granddaughter, Katherine; nephews, Barry, Ryan and Aden; brother-in-law, Michael (Alicia); and sister-in-law, Shelley (Jim).
Danny was a son of the late Art and Ella Holland, Lawrencetown.

Dan was a red seal Journeyman Carpenter with a strong work ethic. He worked for various construction companies with United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 83. His latest place of employment was with Halifax Regional Center for Education which he thoroughly enjoyed. He loved the comradery and team work, especially with John, George, Bud and Mike.  Dan was proud to receive his 25 year pin as a blood donor with Canadian Blood Services. Dan will be remembered as an easy going and loyal friend to all. His kindness and willingness to help others never went unnoticed. Dan was most proud of his loving family and enjoyed many days of his life watching his children play soccer and football games, and in his later years enjoyed watching NBA Raptors games. Dan loved hunting and fishing, and helping out his fellow neighbors with odd jobs, or just to lend a hand. Dan lived a simple life with good friends, a job he enjoyed and loved, enjoyed his treats and being outdoors. He will forever be remembered in our hearts as a kind and gentle soul. We love you, Dad.

His family extends a special thanks to Dr. John Booth, Dr. A. Jad (General Surgery), Dr. D. French (Thoracic Surgery), Dr. S. General (Palliative Care) and Thea Meeson (Palliative Care RN) for their love, care and support shown to Dan and his family during this most difficult time.

Alexander "Sandy" John Hugh MacDonald

MacDonald, Alexander “Sandy” John Hugh – passed away in Colchester East Hants Health Centre surrounded by love on Sunday, April 16, 2023.

Born in Sydney in 1941, he was predeceased by his daughter, Nadine, Truro; brother, Stuart, Halifax; father, Alexander “Ailig”, East Bay, Cape Breton; mother, Peg, Big Beach, Cape Breton.

Dad is survived by his loving children, Mark, Truro; and Amy (Keola Asam), Wai’anae, Hawaii. He loved all his nieces and nephews and his grandchildren, Victoria, Saltsprings; Rebekah, Windsor; Margaret and Glyn, Truro; Haukealani, Coral, Keone, Sydney and Kailana, all of Wai’anae, Hawaii.

What an adventurous life he led. He spent his career in sales where traveling the world provided countless fodder for his storytelling. He loved having a new audience for a story maybe heard a time or two by family. Dad had a big heart and would welcome all in with a big smile to match. He loved to laugh and stayed optimistic through the most challenging times.

Dad enjoyed nothing more than being right beside Mom following and cheering on their Raptors, Blue Jays and Brooke Henderson.

Dad survived 10 weeks to the day after losing Mom, longer than we thought he might. He will be missed and remembered so fondly and can be a new shining star alongside Mom now. Love you Papa Canada! Aloha & A Hui Hou!

Lester Royce Miller

Miller, Lester Royce – Age 85, of Mill Village, passed away suddenly on April 12, 2023 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Middle Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Marshall and Dora (Henley) Miller. Lester was the last surviving member of a family of 11 children.

He is survived by one son; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Lester was predeceased by his wife, the former Jennifer Leslie.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 22 at 2 p.m., in Brookside Cemetery, Mill Village. Following the service, friends are welcome to gather at 41 Parker Road, Mill Village.

In lieu of flowers, donations to NS Heart and Stroke Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Stanley Arthur "Art" Law

Law, Stanley Arthur “Art” – The family of Stanley Arthur Law sadly announce his passing on Monday, April 10, 2023 in Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche at the age of 75.

Arthur was born in Truro to loving parents, Stanley and Lorraine (MacNutt) Law.  He grew up in Brookfield, raised his family in Otterbrook and moved to Truro after his retirement.

He was a loving husband of 42 years to Marie (McGillivray) Law, Truro; and the proud father of Elizabeth (Dave), Elkford, BC; and Phillip, South Branch. 

Arthur loved camping and fishing, attending music festivals and spending time with his family.  He also enjoyed travelling south on vacation and going west to visit his children.  He had many fond memories of the good ole “Woodchuck” Days.   

Arthur is survived by his brother and best friend, Walter, Brookfield; mother-in-law, Ferne; sisters-in-law, Marjorie and Anne (Peter); brothers-in-law, Neil (Cathy) and Brian; nieces, Jillian, Kathleen and Kristyn; nephews Jamie and Randy as well as several grand nieces and nephews and little Georgie.

Besides his parents, Arthur was predeceased by his brother, David; nephew, Vincent; father-in-law, Hugh and little Mieka.

The loving care provided to Arthur during his stay in Willow Lodge was second to none.  We were also blessed to have had Melanie and Lois’ compassionate care during his last months at home.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside service on Saturday, April 15 at 3:00 pm in South Branch Cemetery, 622 Ridge Road, Upper Stewiacke with Rev. Larry Harrison officiating.

Rita Fae Carroll

Carroll, Rita Fae –Age 67, of Dean, passed away April 6, 2023 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital.

Born in Dean, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Blanch (Amero) Lemmon.

Rita enjoyed knitting, crocheting, diamond art and making crafts, many of which she gave away.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister, and will always be loved and missed by husband, Lawrence; son, Chris; daughter, Jennifer (Andrew); granddaughters, Alaina, Carmyn and Brianna; brother, Leon; sisters, Roseley, Darlene; sisters-in-law, Florrie Carroll, Betty Carroll, Gladys (Cyril) Lemmon.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by grandson, Marshall; brother, David; sisters, Sheila and Betty; brother-in-law, Stanley Carroll.

Cremation has taken place.

Hiram "Bonky" Blois Isenor

Isenor, Hiram “Bonky” Blois –Age 87, of Enfield and formerly of Lantz, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 6. 2023, with his sons by his side in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Lantz, he was a son of the late Hiram Blanchard and Marjorie Brenda Isenor.

After holding many positions in Nova Scotia Sand and Gravel, he retired as manager of Sunray Products in 1996. Following his retirement, he spent many years at the cottage at Toney River. He was a 40+ years member of C.W.Saunders Masonic Lodge #125 where he served as past Master of the Lodge. He was a warden of St. George’s Anglican Church. As an avid carpenter, he helped build many homes for family and friends.

Surviving are his sons, Jan, Derek (Charmaine); grandchildren, Makayla (Ryan), Madison “Maddie”, Wyatt, Heath, Heather (Brandon); several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” (Hines); brothers, Clifford, Donald; nephew, Bruce Preeper.

Cremation has taken place.

No flowers or visitation by request. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. George’s Anglican Church, Dutch Settlement with Rev. Jane Magrath officiating. Interment of ashes will be in St. George’s Columbarium. Memorial donations may be made C.W.Saunders Masonic Lodge, Canadian Cancer Society, Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or St. George’s Anglican Church – general fund.
