Margaret Baker

Baker, Margaret –Age 87, of West Jeddore. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mom in Twin Oaks Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour on March 8, 2023, surrounded by family.

Born in the town of Zwolle in the Netherlands, Mom was the eldest daughter of the late Willem and Lena Karsten. At the young age of 17, mom came across the ocean by ship to Canada to seek a better life for herself and to set up a new home for the rest of the family. The family joined her the following year. Mom was a Nursing Assistant and her first job was working with children at the County Home in Cole Harbour. This is where she met Dad who was an orderly there, and the rest of their story was written. Mom and Dad then moved to Jeddore, where they built a home and raised their family. Mom worked alongside Dad on the wharf for many years, but that enabled her to be at home and be there for her children.

She had many passions including needlepoint, crocheting, knitting and quilting. She had a great sense of community and was involved in many activities and events, she was a take charge kind of woman – willing to pitch in wherever needed. Most importantly, our mom loved her family.

She is survived by her sister, Jane (Jack) Shea; brother, Bill (Murial) Karsten; loving children, Yvonne (Mike) McKinnon, Jane (Stephan) Young, Daniel (Carla); grandchildren, Andrew (Krystal) McKinnon, Danielle (Chris) McKinnon, Crystal (Matt) Head, Nicholas (Emma) Young, Paige Baker, Taylor Baker; great-grandchildren, Emery, Ella, Landyn, Hailey, Weston, Madison, Evelyn and Sterling.

Beverley Kathleen MacNearney

MacNearney, Beverley Kathleen – Age 74. It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Beverley Kathleen MacNearney of Windsor Junction on March 6, 2023 with family by her side.

Born in Halifax, Beverley later lived in Windsor, Shelburne and Middleton where she worked as an RN and public health nurse for many years. A devoted mother and grandmother and always an advocate of heathy living, she nurtured our minds with wise counsel and nourished our bodies with delicious foods. She took the time to appreciate the beauty and light in everyone and everything. Bev had plenty of that same light within herself - she emanated a youthful radiance no matter her age.

Bev’s interest in health and spirituality led to a passion for yoga and she proudly fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a yoga instructor at age 69.  Being naturally active, she enjoyed curling, kayaking, cross country skiing, sailing, and she never passed up an opportunity to have a dip in the water.

Nature provided her with great inspiration, wonder and rejuvenation, and she spent many days enjoying the sun, water, earth and sky, especially at her special place – Green Bay, Nova Scotia.

A true citizen of the world, Beverley enjoyed travel and recently ventured to Iceland and also participated in her community chorale’s performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Leah Rutledge; son, Kyle (Terri) Rutledge; grandchildren, Marin, Silvia, William and Avery (her namesake); sister, Nancy MacNearney, former husband, Rick Rutledge and extended family.

She was predeceased by her parents, Robert “Edwin” and Kathleen “Kitty” (Vaughan) MacNearney; and beloved brother, Derek MacNearney.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Beverley had been designated as the ambassador for the ALS Society of NB & NS Walk Strong 2023 event. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the organization in her name and the family wishes to thank the Society for their support.
