Joseph "Allan" "Leggie" MacLean

MacLean, Joseph Allan – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph “Allan” “Leggie” MacLean who passed away suddenly at his home on February 7, 2023 in Valley View Apartments, Middle Musquodoboit, where he had resided for years.

Allan was born in Cape Breton.

He will surely be missed by his neighbours who all spoke highly of him. He started his career at Bedford Institute of Oceanography and eventually drove a truck for his dad at Carleton MacLean Trucking. In later years, he worked for 20 years doing property maintenance, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Allan was mechanically inclined and was talented at repairing small engines. There is no better legacy than a laugh and Leggie was packed full of them. His quick wit and clever humour kept those in his presence laughing. Allan will be greatly missed by his immediate family who were there for him in his times of need.

Allan is survived by his loving mother, Madonna; siblings, Lorna, Buddy (Bonnie), David (Jennifer), Curtis (Diane), Norine (Vernon), Lindy (Terry), Brian, Robin (Lavare), Dennis (Troy) and Roy; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, Carleton; brother, Christopher; sister, Wanda; sister-in-law, Donna.

The family would like to extend their greatest thanks to Constable Matheson for his compassion and understanding at this time.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

A Celebration of Life for family and friends to honour our brother, Allan, will be held on Wednesday, February 22, from 7-9 p.m., in First United Church Hall, Musquodoboit Harbour. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to First United Church.

Shirley Theresa Gould

Gould, Shirley Theresa – Age 94 of Elmsvale. Our dear mom peacefully left this world on February 10, 2023. It was with sad hearts that we said “Goodbye”, but we knew Mom went with such dignity to be with our Dad, Roy, the love of her life.

Born in Upper Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Dugald and Edna Archibald.

She and Roy were married on July 5, 1947. Four girls arrived over time and they knew that they were the luckiest girls ever to have such love, happiness and support of two special parents. Mom lived her married life in Elmsvale where she was active in the community. She loved dancing, shopping, family gatherings, playing cribbage, visits and phone calls from family and friends, and looking after her kitty, Jodi, whom she adored.

She will always be loved and missed by daughters, Karen, Judy (Barry), Faye (Chris) and Nancy (Norm). The family grew from four girls to four spouses, 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandson. She was the eighth of nine children being survived by her brother, Lester and his wife, Dawn.

Mom was predeceased by her husband, Roy; son-in-law, Ron Harris; grandson, Allan MacIvor; sisters, Gertrude, Lois, Ethel and Lauretta; brothers, Stuart, Rollie and Neil.

Mom was able to stay in her own home as long as her health allowed, thanks to the help from her caregivers. She also enjoyed visits from Phyllis and Emily. Thank you to all who made life comfortable and happy for Mom.

Our sincere thanks to all of the staff and Dr. Karen Day at Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care given to Mom.

In keeping with her request, there will no visitation or funeral service. A private burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Elmsvale. Donations in Mom’s memory may be made to any SPCA or any charity of choice.

Elizabeth "Betty" Ruth Rogers

Rogers, Elizabeth “Betty” Ruth – Age 92, of Crossroads passed away February 11, 2023 in Debert Court surrounded by her family.

Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Elizabeth (Faulkner) Graham.

Betty enjoyed dancing, old time music, particularly the fiddle, loved going out to plays and concerts. She enjoyed travelling in later years, especially trips to Arizona, Cuba, Alberta and British Columbia. Her home was where the family all gathered. She loved gardening, doing yard work and was a member of the Stewiacke Valley Garden Club. Betty always enjoyed people and was a member of the Stewiacke Valley Museum, and a member of the UCW of Springside United Church. Many hours of companionship were spent with her kitty, Lucy.

She will always be loved and missed by daughters, Donna (Larry), Rosalie (Marvin); grandchildren, Shane (Cara), Bradley (Kate), Garth (Natasha), Josh, Melissa (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Tristan, Rhyleigh, Ethan, Carson, Avery, Ailish, Roger; brothers, Jack, Raymond (Lois); several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard; sister, Margaret in infancy; brother, Ralph (Phyllis); sister-in-law, Peggy.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Betty’s Life will take place at a later date. A private family burial will be held in Eastville Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Carma Cat Rescue or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

Herbert "Herb" Leopold MacKay

MacKay, Herbert “Herb” Leopold – It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father. Herb, age 78, passed away peacefully in Dartmouth General Hospital on Sunday, February 5, 2023 with his loving wife, Patricia and daughter, Alicia by his side.

Herb was born in Little Harbour, to parents, Matthew and Laura McKay. Due to complicated circumstances, he was raised by his older sister, Marion and her husband, Thomas Monk, who he always lovingly referred to as Mother and Pop.

His love for being on the water started early on, through cherished fishing trips with his Pop. He left home at 16 to go to sea to work with the Coast Guard and then onto a ship that laid telecommunication cables. Once back on land, he dabbled in numerous job fields. From driving delivery trucks, selling cars, working in real estate to finally settling into the construction industry. He started his own company, D&H Construction in the early 1980’s and was kept busy until he retired in 2015. During those years, he forged some of his strongest friendships that remain to this day.

Herb loved spending quality time with family and friends fishing, hunting, going for drives, playing cards and tormenting anyone who would take it. Nothing was more enjoyed, though, than his love of dancing and the weekends spent in Nine Mile River with Pat and all their friends, except for maybe a good feed of lobster.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Patricia; children, Alicia (Wally) Langille, Tom Davies, Theresa Langille, Martina Williams, Robert Gale, Jamie Gale and Wallie Gale; grandchildren, Matthew (Alisha) Gallant, Morgan (Tom) Henderson, Brandon Whynot, Brandon Gale and Colton Gale; siblings, Marion (Thomas) Monk, Margaret (Bob) Kidson, Ruby (Ralph) Kidson and Donald (Pam) McKay; honorary siblings, Joseph (Sharon) Monk, Anthony (Marilyn) Monk, Jerome Monk and Marianne (Harry) Marshall; as well as a large and loving group of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

He is predeceased by previous wives, Dorothy MacKay and Evelyn Davies; parents, Matthew and Laura McKay; siblings, Myrtle (Elmore) Turple, Norman McKay, Benjamin (Debbie) McKay, Cecil McKay and also Thomas “Pop” Monk and Thomas Jr. (Margaret) Monk.

In the spring, there will be a small graveside service for close family followed by a Celebration of Life reception for all family and friends, with the date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation, as Herb has always credited them with helping give him a second chance at life.

Ruth Constance Hutchinson

Hutchinson, Ruth Constance - age 93, passed away on February 1, 2023, in Braeside Home for Special Care, Middle Musquodoboit.

Ruth was the youngest daughter of the late Arthur John Hankey and Mary Olivia (Webber) Hankey.

Ruth was raised in Sackville, and went on to attend Normal College followed by an 18- year teaching career. She married Donald Hutchinson and moved to Upper Musquodoboit where she taught school. In retirement, Ruth spent the last 20 years of her life living in Truro. She was dedicated to her family, students, and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. While living in Upper Musquodoboit, Ruth enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden, making preserves, and walking through the fields. In her later life in Truro, she was always up for a game of Scrabble and loved to read. Ruth was a proud member of the UCW, and will be remembered as a peaceful, happy and kind-hearted person.

Surviving are her son, Glen (Viola); granddaughters, Tiffany and Shanda who all reside in Alberta.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Donald; son, Edward; sisters, Marion, Jean and Muriel.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Burial will be held at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Special thanks to Lydia Fox, Kaye Dean, Judy Burgess and Janice Lemmon who helped Ruth in so many ways, allowing her to stay in her home as long as she did.

Ruth was always thankful for the care given to her by the VON and the staff of Braeside. Donations in her memory to the VON or Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation – Braeside would be greatly appreciated.

Bonita Elizabeth MacDonald

MacDonald, Bonita Elizabeth – passed away in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro surrounded by her immediate family on Sunday, January 29, 2023.

Born in Sydney, Cape Breton in 1945, she was predeceased by her daughter, Nadine, Truro; brother, Allan; and sisters, Carole and Wanda, Halifax and is survived by her loving husband, Alexander (Sandy), Truro; son, Mark, Truro; and daughter, Amy (Keola Asam), Wai’anae, Hawaii; as well as sisters, Eleanor, Halifax; and Jeanette, Sydney. She loved all her nieces and nephews and her grandchildren, Victoria, Saltsprings; Rebekah, Windsor; Margaret and Glyn, Truro; Haukealani, Coral, Keone, Sydney and Kailana, all of Wai’anae, Hawaii.

Bonnie led a full and beautiful life with an unstoppable thirst for knowledge and helping others naturally led her to a career as an educator at which she excelled and touched the lives of literally thousands along that road. She sparked the joy of learning in so many. She truly had the biggest heart imaginable. She had a witty sense of humour and always a musical song to sing for any occasion. Mom loved following and cheering on her Raptors, Blue Jays and Brooke Henderson. She loved to watch her grandchildren surf and hear about all their adventures!

Words cannot describe how much you will be missed and remembered in such a positive light. You made all of our lives better off for knowing us and for loving us all. The heavens gained a new shining star. Love you Mom! Aloha & A Hui Hou!

Robert Dean

Dean, Robert – Robert passed away this week after a long and exhausting battle with cancer. He was 66.

Robert lived a very simple life but family meant a lot to him. He shared his six year ordeal with us and we were proud of how he handled his disease and endless treatments, always trying to stay optimistic. However, it was not to be.

One of his great passions was hockey. He was a Leaf’s fan and was thrilled when he got the opportunity of touring the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto a few years ago. Another passion was cars. He loved talking cars, fixing cars, driving cars and attended every antique car show he could find. No doubt that was the reason that he spent most of his working life behind the wheel. He was employed with Altimax Courier, was a test driver for Honda and the last few years were spent making deliveries to various locations in Nova Scotia for Atlantic Windshield in Dartmouth.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, Timothy and Marjorie (Smith) Dean; and his brother, Alan. He is survived by his sister, Eleanor (Neil) Hamilton; nephews, Timothy (Rhonda), Halifax; Aaron, Dartmouth; Michael (April), Mt. Stewart, PEI; and nieces, Belinda (Robert), North West Cove; Angela (Clinton), Enfield; and great-niece, Sarah, Charlottetown.

Special thanks to Trevor and Andrew for their much appreciated help this past week and to Jerry for always being his friend.

There will be no service or visitation. A private burial will be at a later date.

Sidney Archibald Stewart

Stewart, Sidney Archibald – age 69 of Stewiacke, passed away peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on Friday, January 27 2023 after a long struggle with COPD.

Born in Halifax, he was raised in Stewiacke. He was a son of Archie and Ethel (Kent) Stewart, and was predeceased by his parents and sister, Cynthia Parker.

He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his daughter, Shaundelle Stewart; grandchildren, Kaila, Carly and Parker; sister, Norma Stewart (Paul Tweed); niece, Denise Patriquin (Luke Purdon); uncle, Phillip Kent; aunt, Donna Kent; and several cousins.

George William Taylor

Taylor, George William –Age 74 of Cloverdale, passed away January 27, 2023 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Clarence “Mack” Taylor and Laura “Isabel” (Richards) Taylor.

He was a millwright at Crossley Karastan for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and swimming.

Surviving are his wife, Sherrilyn (Webster); son, James “Jimmy”.

He was predeceased by sister, Edith Jean Taylor.

Cremation has taken place.

Danny Ross Rudolph

Rudolph, Danny Ross – of Elmsdale, passed away January 26, 2023 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. 

Danny was a resourceful person always finding a way to make things work, it may not have been the right way, but he got it done. He was comfortable working with anything, whether it was a car or woodworking or fixing a house. He always put his personal touch on everything he worked on. He was a jack of all trades.

Danny had a variety of jobs and could do anything from cabinet making to truck driving. He worked hard at what he did and took pride in his work. He did have to retire a few years ago due to health reasons. 

He was always happy when he was tinkering in his garage. He loved NASCAR especially Mark Martin. He loved racing so much he even had his own stock car at one point. He had a love of animals and was always fond of his dogs that he had throughout his life. 

Danny was predeceased by his parents, Merrit Rudolph and Grace (Croft, Rudolph) Duprey. 

He is survived by his brother, Owen (Elsie); sisters, Linda (Tim) and Helen; children, Terry-Lynn, Deborah (Jason), Amanda (Scot), Krista (Stephane) and Jessica; grandchildren, Avery, Michael, Amelie, Marshall, Cardie, Rya, Hope and Faith; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews as well as great great-nieces and nephews and life-long friend, Shirley. 

A spring interment at the Sandy Hill Cemetery, Belnan will be announced at a later date.

Walter Willis Barr

Barr, Walter Willis – Age 68, of Stewiacke passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on January 25, 2023 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Willis and Doris (Wright) Barr. He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife, Daphne (Robinson); his sons, Greg (Laura Murphy) and Sean (Hayley Gallant); sister, Judy (Jim) Meadows; brother, John (Martha) Barr; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Helika Adams and Joanne for the many years of their care and compassion. Our deepest gratitude is extended to Tahnee Dodsworth for providing respite care over the past several years.

Calvin Wilbert Crowell

Crowell, Calvin Wilbert – passed away at home on January 25, 2023 at the age of 81.

Born in Dartmouth, he was a son of the late Lester and Ruth (Newell) Crowell.

Calvin was a very loving and devoted husband and father. He was always there to help anyone. He had many stories to tell, either about hunting at his camp, his good old Navy days, or growing up in Dartmouth. He was Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class and served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Marine Engineer from 1958-1988. Later he worked at the machine shop at the Halifax Dockyard.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn (Buffett); sister, Marie George (Mervin); brother, Donald Crowell (Nicolle); daughters, Michelle White (Malcome), Maryanne Steffen (Billy); sons, Sean Crowell (Misty), Kevin Crowell and Kristopher Steffen; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

He was predeceased by his brother, Lloyd Crowell.

Thank you to the paramedics, doctors and nurses for such acts of kindness.

A gathering in remembrance of Calvin will be held at a later date for family and friends.

John Edwin Whitenect

Whitenect, John Edwin – Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, John Edwin Whitenect passed away with his family by his side on January 24, 2023, at the age of 85 years.

Those who knew John know that he was a hardworking, good-natured guy. A bird/nature lover making friends with chipmunks, chickadees and many other animal friends that made their home on his property. He was an avid cribbage player who never turned down the opportunity to spend time with friends or family. His grandchildren have fond memories of driving on the John Deere and working the yard with Gramps as well as the most extravagant property-wide easter egg hunts despite rain or snow.

His career started as a carpenter but ended as chief inspector at Department of Labour and Forestry. After retirement, he ran Little River Christmas Tree Farm. During the Christmas season, he made hundreds of wreaths with his loving wife and during the off season shearing trees to have them in tiptop shape for the up coming season.

He is survived and will be missed dearly by his wife, Donna Whitenect; children, Jody (Kathy), Donna “Sissy” (Kenny) Henneberry, Tony; grandchildren, Melissa, Connor (Skyeler), Logan, Garrett (Daphne), Katrina, Daniel, Travis, Jaedyn; great-granddaughter, Charlie; siblings, Donald (Elaine), David (Minnie), Terry (Julie), Joy Miller and Diane Gazzola.

He was predeceased by his parents, John Everett and Alice Mae (Mitchell) Whitenect; sisters, Shirley Nauffts, June Hopkins and Bonita; brothers, Dale and Robert; nephew, Dean; niece, Krista Borden; daughter-in-law, Gena; and grandson, Trevor Henneberry.

A private service will be held at the family’s request.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their care and compassion as well as the community support that kept John safe and happy at home for as long as possible.

Wanda Lee Hamilton

Hamilton, Wanda Lee – It is with great sadness that the family of Wanda Lee Hamilton announce her passing after a brief illness on January 23, 2023 at the age of 58.

Born in Middle Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of Perley and Betty Hamilton of Upper Stewiacke.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Josh and daughter-in-law, Kristen. Her beloved grandchildren, Eloise “Cutie Pie” and Ethan “Little Dude” will miss their Wawa.

She will also be missed by her brother and sisters, nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service at her request.

Shirley Stewart

Stewart, Shirley – of Elmsvale, passed away suddenly at home on January 22, 2023.

Born in Wittenburg, in 1932, she was a daughter of the late Norman and Pearl (Ellis) MacLeod.

Mom was very fond of old-time music and loved to dance. She also enjoyed bowling and playing crib. She loved animals, especially cats.

Surviving are daughter, Sherry and son-in-law, Scott Conrad; granddaughters, Lisa (Zack), and Sarah; great-grandson, Emmett, who the was the love of her life. She is also survived by sisters, Reta Taylor and Ethel MacIsaac; sisters-in-law, Beulah, Joyce, Polly, Phyllis and Darlene.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Skip; brothers, Raymond, Elroy, Howard and Robert in infancy; sisters, Thelma, Doris, Hilda and Beulah; several brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.

Cremation has taken place.

In keeping with Mom’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Elmsvale.

Gary Douglas Reid

 Reid, Gary Douglas – Age 76, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2023, in QEII Infirmary, Halifax. Born in Caribou Gold Mines, Gary was a son of the late Clarke and Lillian.  He is predeceased by his wife, Florence Darlene.

Gary was a loving husband and mill worker known for his hard work ethic. He lived in Musquodoboit most of his life and loved fishing and hunting.  Gary was witty and determined.  He loved his family and friends and always looked forward to company.    

Gary will be fondly remembered by his surviving two sisters, Sadie and Dolly.  He was predeceased by his brothers, John “Jack” and Wendell; and sisters, Helen, Shirley and Charlene.

In keeping with Gary's wishes, there will be no service or visitation.  Interment will be in the spring in Dean Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the QEII Foundation, Camp Hill Veteran's Building, Memory Clinic.

Benjamin Elwyn Corkum

Corkum, Benjamin Elwyn – Age 73, of Glenholme, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, January 21, 2023 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. He was born in Amherst.
There are not many jobs out there that Dad didn’t try his hand at throughout his lifetime but his favourite place to be, by far, was behind the wheel of a truck. His work ethic was second to none and it was something he instilled into all of us. A hard day’s work never hurt anyone. He always had champagne taste on a beer budget that he would justify by saying “You get what you pay for.”
He was a jack of all trades (including sarcasm and witty remarks) but everyone would agree that he was a master of only one: A family man. He was a loving husband, caring father, and the best grandfather/great-grandfather you could ask for.
Blood may run deep but Dad made sure everyone knew that our family is made up of heart connections, not blood lines on a family tree. Dad specifically wanted Aunt Carrie & Uncle Dale (his brother from another mother), Sharon, Lori, Heather and Shelbie-Ann to know that you were the family he chose, and that he loved you all as if you were his. He loved having lots of people around to laugh and share stories with... probably telling you the same ones over and over again!
We will remember Dad/Dumpy/Papa or any other name you could think to call him, good or bad, every time Tom Brady steps on the field, we go for a swim on the North Shore, when the not-so oldies are on the radio, someone does the not smiling smile, and especially when the crib board hits the table.

Ben left behind his wife of 44 years, Doris (6 years shy of Live at 5); brother, Rick (Ginny); children, Jason (Betty), Christopher (Meghan “Tululla”), and Jillian (Danny B); grandchildren, Samantha, Paige (Ben), Alexandria (Doug), and David; great-grandchildren, Elias, Aubree, Coraline, Sophia and Cohen. He was predeceased by great loves that hurt to his dying day, whom we hope are with him now. He loved deeply, protected fiercely and guided lovingly; with a gentle kick in the rear end when required. I know for a fact he will now be watching over and protecting us from above because a love like his is something that can never fade or die.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the family home on Saturday, February 4th from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

So the coffee is on, the crib board set and the stories have started. Heaven is in trouble...love you always, miss you already.

Bernadette Ann Wilson

Wilson, Bernadette Ann – Age 66, of Lantz passed away January 20,2023 surrounded by family in QEII, VG site, ICU.

Bernadette also lived in Edmonton, Alberta for 36 years.

She will be deeply missed by her sister, Kathy; brother, Joey; furry niece, Ruby; nephew, Charlie (Carrie); great-nephew, Lincoln; uncles, Jackie (Bonnie) Wilson, Graham Wilson; and very special friend, Marian Ettinger.

She was predeceased by mother, Barbara Burgess; stepfather, Ralph Burgess; twin sister, Christena Wilson; brother-in-law, Darrell Corkum; and sister, Theresa Burgess.

Special thanks to the staff of the VG ICU 3A for their kindness at such a hard time.

A Burial Service will take place January 28, 2023 at 2 p.m. in Fall River Cemetery,

1457 Fall River Road.

Sharon Pauline (Seamone) Eisemann

Eisemann (Seamone), Sharon Pauline – passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 after a long illness in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, aged 76 years. Sharon was a daughter of the late Harry and Muriel (Reading) Seamone. She was predeceased by sisters, Marion (Saunders), Velma (Neden), Patricia (Warner).

Sharon is survived by her younger sister, Barbara (Hruskoci); her sons, Stephen and Scott Eisemann; two grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews. 

Born in Berwick, Sharon followed her older sister, Velma to Ontario and lived much of her life in the Toronto area until moving to Truro in her retirement. She loved animals and especially several dogs she had over the years. 

Cremation has taken place and by request, there will be no visitation or memorial service.

Burial will take place in Harmony Cemetery in the spring.

Donations may be made to the SPCA, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.

Murray Calvin Brown

Brown, Murray Calvin - passed away January 18, 2023, in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria; sons, Troy (Lori), Ashley (Nicki); grandchildren, DaeSean, Max and Mariah; two other special people, Kellie and Noel.

Cremation has taken place.

No visitation or funeral by request.

Donations in his memory may be made to Children’s Wish Foundation.
