Benjamin Elwyn Corkum

Corkum, Benjamin Elwyn – Age 73, of Glenholme, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, January 21, 2023 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. He was born in Amherst.
There are not many jobs out there that Dad didn’t try his hand at throughout his lifetime but his favourite place to be, by far, was behind the wheel of a truck. His work ethic was second to none and it was something he instilled into all of us. A hard day’s work never hurt anyone. He always had champagne taste on a beer budget that he would justify by saying “You get what you pay for.”
He was a jack of all trades (including sarcasm and witty remarks) but everyone would agree that he was a master of only one: A family man. He was a loving husband, caring father, and the best grandfather/great-grandfather you could ask for.
Blood may run deep but Dad made sure everyone knew that our family is made up of heart connections, not blood lines on a family tree. Dad specifically wanted Aunt Carrie & Uncle Dale (his brother from another mother), Sharon, Lori, Heather and Shelbie-Ann to know that you were the family he chose, and that he loved you all as if you were his. He loved having lots of people around to laugh and share stories with... probably telling you the same ones over and over again!
We will remember Dad/Dumpy/Papa or any other name you could think to call him, good or bad, every time Tom Brady steps on the field, we go for a swim on the North Shore, when the not-so oldies are on the radio, someone does the not smiling smile, and especially when the crib board hits the table.

Ben left behind his wife of 44 years, Doris (6 years shy of Live at 5); brother, Rick (Ginny); children, Jason (Betty), Christopher (Meghan “Tululla”), and Jillian (Danny B); grandchildren, Samantha, Paige (Ben), Alexandria (Doug), and David; great-grandchildren, Elias, Aubree, Coraline, Sophia and Cohen. He was predeceased by great loves that hurt to his dying day, whom we hope are with him now. He loved deeply, protected fiercely and guided lovingly; with a gentle kick in the rear end when required. I know for a fact he will now be watching over and protecting us from above because a love like his is something that can never fade or die.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the family home on Saturday, February 4th from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

So the coffee is on, the crib board set and the stories have started. Heaven is in trouble...love you always, miss you already.

Alexander "Sandy" James MacMillan

MacMillan, Alexander “Sandy” James – With heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Alexander “Sandy” James MacMillan, husband of the late Evelyn (Newell) MacMillan which occurred in Dartmouth General Hospital on January 17, 2023.  He was born in Lost River, Quebec to his late parents, Alexander A MacMillan and Gladys (Weldon) MacMillan.

Sandy (also known as AJ, Dad, or P) passed away peacefully after battling multiple health issues that had made his life increasingly painful and difficult. He endured this like all challenges he faced, with stoic determination and (mostly) quiet resolve.

He is survived by his loving children, Alexander Kent (Paddy-joe) MacMillan, Richard MacMillan, Todd MacMillan; daughter-in-law, Brenda Severance; grandchildren, Camden MacMillan and Sydney MacMillan; sisters-in-law, Betty Lewis, Pat Hurlehey, Thelma Palmateer, Linda Crockett; brothers-in-law, John (Carole) Newell, David (Beatrice) Newell; many cherished nieces, and nephews; best friend, Johnny Kanne who was Statler to his Waldorf.

In addition to his wife, Evelyn Ruth (nee Newell) who was the love and light of his life and his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Richard W MacMillan and several beloved members of the Newell family and lifetime friend, Shirley Kanne.

After high school, Sandy joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and trained as a medical laboratory technologist working in military hospital laboratories for 28 years followed by working in nonmilitary hospitals, and later with the Canadian Corp of Commissionaires. As a medical laboratory technologist, his specialty was in blood bank with an interest in hematology. Based on his deep interest, unfailing work ethic, strong organizational and leadership skills, he progressed in his career to become the Laboratory Manager wherever he worked, also reaching the rank of Warrant Officer in the Air Force.

He lived a full life, having married the woman of his dreams six months after their first date and raising 3 boys, born just 13 months apart, while working multiple jobs to provide a good lifestyle for them.

Outside of work and raising a family, he was involved in the Lions Club at various times, even winning a beard growing contest despite being a late entrant. He also enjoyed hunting in his earlier days, as well as sport fishing where he caught a lot of big fish (pictures even exist of some of them) and passed on some of this to his children. He endured the challenge of “helping” three young boys fish while rarely getting a chance to wet a line himself. In later years, he took the sport up again, even learning to fly fish on the sly so he could fish with his son. He spent time fishing and going on other adventures including daily tea and talk at Tim Hortons in later years with his lifelong best friend, Johnny Kanne.

He was always kind, generous and warm-hearted, which he typically expressed through his actions, rather than words. He was a fully involved, father, both at home and volunteering to help with different sports and activities, and taking his wild bunch on frequent camping trips and road trips across the country, including one with a dalmatian dog.

While in the RCAF he was stationed to many locations including Europe. While living in Germany there were trips to exotic locations, like Paris and Italy, or Freiburg, to get the most prized treat of all, McDonald’s were part of the routine, as well as somehow managing to bring back Pizza Hut from a trip to Canada. He later passed this generous treatment on to his grandchildren, Camden and Sydney, who he adored and who also enjoyed spending time with “P”.

In part due to his work in healthcare and being married to Registered Nurse, he had a deep respect and admiration for healthcare workers, especially those on the front line. During his recent hospital stay at Dartmouth General on 3 West and in the ICU, he had nothing but praise for nursing staff, in some cases raving so much about how wonderful one was that it was written up for the 3 West Stars board. His family also wants to pass on their heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation for their taking such good care of him and for helping him to have a peaceful, warm and dignified death.

At his request, his body has been cremated and will be interred in Cape Breton, beside his best friend and wife, Evelyn, at a later date.

Mom and Dad were married over 60 years and enjoyed doing pretty much anything as long as they were together.  They loved to dance, garden or go for drives.  Mom was an amazing cook and baker – nothing better than Mom’s homemade bread, biscuits or coconut cream pie!  And Christmas would not be Christmas without Mom’s homemade donuts – we will keep the tradition going Mamabear! In her earlier days, Mom loved to sew and did an amazing job on several wedding dresses!  She took cake decorating classes and created works of art.  She had a great creative talent.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.  There will be no funeral or visitation.  There will be a family committal at a later date.

A special and heartfelt thank you to the entire staff of Maplestone Enhanced Care where Mom lived the last two years.  Your kindness, compassion and love showed you were Mom’s family too.

Warren Kraig "Dudy" MacKenzie

MacKenzie, Warren Kraig – We are sad to announce that Warren Kraig “Dudy” MacKenzie, aged 59 of Brookfield, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 8, 2023 in his happy place, the Trout Lake camp.

Born in Truro, he was raised in Brookfield where he still resided. He was the fifth child of Grace and the late John MacKenzie.

Kraig or better known to most as “Dudy” was happiest when he was out in the woods in his mini truck or side by side no matter what time of year. If you were stuck in a mud hole or needed help he was the one that everyone could call or count on to come help. Bonfires, waterfalls, 4-wheeling, curling or enjoying a Thursday night ballgame in Brookfield were his most favourite things to do, other than enjoying his garage or beautiful outdoor space he created at home. He loved the camp at Trout Lake (his happy place) where he and his best friend, Pib would spend hours arguing over everything but always finished the work that needed to be done. Kraig also loved doing anything with wood, he was always working on a special project or making something for his home or his friends. Kraig played ball and hockey with the Brookfield Elks, was a member of the South Colchester ATV Club and still a mainstay at the Brookfield Curling Club. He was the one that everyone counted on when they needed something, even if it was just to stir the pot at a function or gathering!! Loved be everyone, he will be truly missed.

The house and yard were always full of kids playing and she loved it. Once her last two children were reaching the end of schooling, Bertha decided to go back to work. She was the cook and head of the kitchen staff at the Irving Big Stop for years until she retired. But that did not stop her from volunteering and cooking for groups or events. She joined the UCW at Knox United Church in Lower Sackville and volunteered and became a member of Waverley Legion where she was always available to do the cooking or whatever else was needed for an event. Bertha also enjoyed playing crib at the senior’s clubs in Fall River, Waverley and Enfield.

Bert and Ken always enjoyed travelling to Bangor, Maine and New Hampshire for holidays or just a weekend away. The White Mountains were their favourite place to go.

Bertha’s other enjoyments were yard sales, shopping, eating out in restaurants, dancing and music. She enjoyed life and it did not take a lot to make her happy. She was always happy to see you when you came to visit. Family was so important to her. She adored all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her life. The girls always needed a frilly dress and a baby doll for Christmas and the boys would need a toy car of some kind when they were small.

Bertha was known as “Mom Ackles” to a lot of her children’s friends growing up. She was like a second mother to a lot of kids. She will be missed a great deal by everyone, we all loved her dearly.
