Adam Baker Henley

Henley, Adam Baker - Age 82, of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away July 9, 2022 at home. Born in Upper Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Henry and Dora (Dean) Henley.

Adam was a hard-worker, spending most of his working life in the woods. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and provided for his family as best he could. His determined attitude for life kept him going for as long as he did.

He will be always be loved and missed by his wife, Catherine “Cathy”; daughter, Elizabeth Munroe (Bobby); son, A.J.; grandson, Tyler; sisters, Josephine, Rhoda (Dennis) and Dianne. He was predeceased by granddaughter, Charmaine; sisters, Kay and Ida; brothers, Don, Ralph and Gordon.

Cremation has taken place.

In keeping with Adam’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.

Memorial donations may be made to Diabetes Canada.

James "Jimmy" Kenneth Reid

Reid, James Kenneth “Jimmy” It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our father, James “Jimmy” Reid, age 75.  After a brief but courageous battle with cancer, he passed with much love surrounding him; his daughters and grandchildren whom he loved more than life itself.

Born a son of R. Kenneth & Jennie (Harrison) Reid, of Middle Musquodoboit, Jimmy was the third generation living in the family homestead where he remained for the majority of his life.  As a young man, Jimmy left the community for university traveling westward and gaining valuable life experience. Echoes of home eventually drew him back to his family roots. He met and married the love of his life, Estelle (Currie) with whom he raised three loving daughters. Working for the Department of Transportation, Jimmy quickly realized his calling was to continue his family legacy, rebuilding the business his grandfather began so many years before. He continually met the challenges of change, always evolving to meet the needs of his beloved community. It was that perseverance that made him both a proud community leader and a successful business man. Jimmy prided himself in helping others and found countless ways to make that happen.  He volunteered for many committees, over sought various projects and participated in all things community. He became County Councillor in 1981 and served humbly in this role for over 11 years. Most proudly he was an integral part of many municipal improvements in the area, always there to lend his wisdom, his time and his leadership. A true talent, Jimmy was happiest sharing his voice in song whether lone or harmonizing with others, striking tones only Jimmy could.  Music was a true passion and he was locally famous for his performance of ‘The Sick Song’. Jimmy & Estelle were blessed with many lifelong bonds. He was especially thankful for his Currie clan: another treasured part of his heart. With the greatest group of friends (the “clique”), they raised their children together growing an extended family like no other.  He treasured each and every one of them.  Jimmy formed many wonderful relationships over his life; his most favorite times being spent with his childhood Scout troop on their legendary hunting and fishing trips.  He loved his “poker family” playing faithfully with them for over 40 years. He was especially grateful for the simple life his beloved Valley afforded him. Always humble and purposeful with his words, very few could describe the pride he felt when it came to his grandchildren.  He beamed with love and affection for their beautiful souls, their accomplishments and the life he knew they would lead. 

Jimmy is survived by his daughters, Stephanie (Brian), Kerry-Anne (Raymond) and Melanie; brother, Dr. Daniel (Carolyn) Reid; sister, Carolyn (Frank) Melanson; grandchildren, Dawson, Maria, Jennie-Pearl, James and Isabelle; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.  Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Estelle (Currie) and in-laws, Melvin and Bernadette (Corbett) Currie. Special thanks to Erica, the MAID Program, Dr. Barry Giffin and the special care and support provided by his brother, Dan.  

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held on July 15th at 2:00 pm in Middleton United Church, Middle Musquodoboit. Reception to follow in the Bicentennial Theatre.  Family flowers only.

Carla Dawn Blades

Blades, Carla Dawn – Carla passed away on July 6, 2022 just days short of her 49th birthday. She was born in Halifax to Carl Donald Blades and Kathy Mary (Ormiston) Blades. Besides her parents, she is survived by son, Jalmer McGinnis; partner, Angus MacDonald; brother, Duncan Blades and his family; also many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Raised in Elderbank, Carla attended MRHS where she earned the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and many awards in the 4-H Program. She worked as a bus driver with Stock Transportation and recently with Canada Post Corporation as a Letter Carrier.

She was predeceased by sister, Heather Lee Blades (1981) and sister-in-law, Julie Ann (Finchem) Blades (2021).

Carla appreciated all who helped in caring for her over these last months.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St Andrews United Church, Elderbank on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at 2:00 PM.

Interment to follow in Elderbank Cemetery next to her sister, Heather.

Avis Anne Baker (Arnold)

Baker (Arnold) , Avis Anne - Age 83, of East Jeddore, passed away July 4, 2022.

She leaves behind her children, Sylvia (Ernie), Stanley, Michael (Donna), Wayne (Cindy), Sheila (Leo); grandchildren, Josh, Samantha, Cody, Brett, Jeff, Dylan, and Monica; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Mila, Emma, Dexter, Abbey, Beau and three on the way.

She is also survived by brothers, George, Richard, Eddie, Dennis, Victor, Ernie, Allan and Pat; sisters, Shirley and Carol; many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, William and Dorothy Arnold; husband of 58 years, Wray; brothers, Paul, David and Vincent.

Cremation has taken place.

Sharon Lee Hamilton

Hamilton, Sharon Lee - Born in Middle Musquodoboit, passed away at age 77, on July 3, 2022.

She was predeceased by her parents, William and Frances (Fisher) Hamilton; and her much-loved son-in-law, Michael McCabe. Mom AKA Grammie will be dearly missed by her family. 

We will miss our birthday cakes, daily phone calls, playing games and spending time with our Mom, Grammie, sister and friend. Her children and grandchildren were her main passion in life. She will be forever loved and missed by her daughters, Shelley, Lisa, Leanne (Greg); grandchildren, Jennifer, Raeanne, Jeremy, Morgan, Ray, Erin; son-in law, Kevin; siblings, Myrna (Bonar), Doreen (John), Gary (Joanne), Peggy (Ernie); and her many nieces and nephews. Everyone knew she was also very excited about the upcoming birth of her first great-grandchild.

Cremation has taken place.

A graveside service will be held July 9th at 1PM in Meagher’s Grant Cemetery. Following the service, the family will meet friends at the Meagher’s Grant Firehall until 4pm.

Marie A. Fraser

Fraser, Marie A. – Age 82 of Truro and formerly of Harmony passed away June 28, 2022 at home.

Born in Harmony, she was a daughter of the late Arnold and Hazel (Boutilier) Watson.

Marie retired from Polymer Intertape after a 30+ year career. She volunteered at CEHHC for many years.

Marie is survived by her best friend and companion of 35 years, Rodney Hill; daughter, Shelley (Norm), Masstown; granddaughter, Melissa, Truro; two great-grandchildren; Rodney’s boys, Andrew, Derrick and Darrell Hill.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Nellie Marie in infancy.

Cremation has taken place.

A graveside service will be held in Hillside Cemetery, Middle Musquodoboit at a later date.

Whalen, Catherine “Cathy” – Age 67, passed away June 27, 2022.

She is survived by her children, Terri (Greg) MacDonald, Corey (Tracy Philpitt); their father, David Whalen; sister, Trina Coxworthy; brother, Joey Way; her adored grandsons, Tyler (Anna) MacDonald, Chandler Whalen, Carter Kirby-Slaunwhite (a nephew, but loved as a grandson); sister-in-law, Sheri Kirby; her great-grandson, Owen.

She was predeceased by her parents, Edgar and Avril Slaunwhite; brother, Todd Slaunwhite.

Donald Murray Doucette

Doucette, Donald Murray – Age 92 of Shubenacadie passed away June 24, 2022 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ruth (Fraser) Doucette.

Donald had been employed with Nova Scotia Power Corporation for most of his working career. He enjoyed crafts, doing wood carvings, Stompin’ Tom music and going to the casino.

He will always be loved and missed by sons, Murray, Earl (Martha), Tim (Helen), Danny (Leona), Paul (Elaine); daughter, Norma (Wayne); brother, Wayne (Vera); 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Norma Irene (Potter); sons, Joe and Doug; daughter, Ruth; brothers, Jack, Jim and Ben; sister, Helen.

Cremation has taken place.

A family graveside service will be held at a later date.

Robert Arthur Deale

Deale, Robert Arthur – The family of Robert Arthur Deale are sad to announce his passing on June 22, 2022 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital. He was 77 years young and bravely battled cancer for the past four years.

Robert was a dedicated worker who had been a heavy equipment operator for a number of construction companies. He was an industrial mechanic at Gays River Gold Mine where he made many friends and retired from Department of Highways as a grader operator.

Surviving are his ex-wife, Linda Deale; and recent partner, Violet Hawes. He also raised three step-daughters, Michelle (John Roy), Penny and Melissa (Jamie) Reid. He is survived by seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Deale and Jeanie Deale; brothers, Richard, John Allan (Lil); brother-in-law, Dennis Frost.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Hazel (Stewart) Deale; sister, Marjorie Frost; brothers, Lloyd, Cameron, Fred and Philip; sister-in-law, Sally MacInnis; foster sister, Lynda (Loren) Stewart; nephew, Pat Frost.

Cremation has taken place.

There will be a private graveside service on June 26 in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit.

Virginia "Jenny" Mae (Baxter) Faulkner

Faulkner (Baxter), Virginia “Jenny” Mae – Age 78, of Musquodoboit Harbour passed away unexpectedly on June 18, 2022 in Dartmouth General Hospital with family by her side.

Born in Halifax, she was raised by the late George and Myrtle (Dooks) Faulkner.

Jenny was an outgoing, independent spirit who enjoyed the outdoors, camping, gardening and knitting. She made many baby bonnets donating them to the IWK neo-natal unit. She loved to feed the birds and watch the hummingbirds.

Her family meant the world to her and she will always be loved and missed by daughters, Delight (Francis) Mannette and their daughters, Amy Mannette (Jason), Cynthia Mannette (Chris); Wanda (Curtis) Kuhn and their daughters, Cara (David) Chrétien and grandchildren, Gabrielle and Olivia; Meagan Kuhn (Richard), Miranda Kuhn (Brandon); son, Paul Faulkner and his daughter, Christine Noseworthy and grandchildren, Alli, Bentley, Carter, Darius and Evelyn. She will also be missed by long-time loving partner, Darryl Fader; and extended family, Barb Kaulback and Emma Brown.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wayne Robert Faulkner; sister, Mae Munroe.

Cremation has taken place.

In keeping with Mom’s wishes a private graveside service will be held in St. James Anglican Church Cemetery at a later date.

Larry David Garnett

Garnett. Larry David –Age 68, of Hardwood Lands passed away in Colchester East Hants Health Center on June 16,2022.

Larry was a son of the late Harry Garnett and Ruth (Burgess) Garnett.

He is survived by his partner, Betty Laybolt and her children, Donovan (Carla) and Dawn (Tim); brothers, Brian (Betty) Garnett, Texas; Darrel (Sheila) Garnett, PEI; Rodney Garnett, PEI; Glen (Heather) Garnett, Yarmouth; sister-in-law, Kathy Garnett; daughters, Sherri (Susan) Hamilton, Tammy (Aaron) Levy and Lindsey (Luigi) Garnett; and grandchildren, Cavell Hamilton, Leslie Ann and Ethan Levy.

Besides his parents, Larry was predeceased by his brothers, Barry, Kevin, Wayne and sister, Donna Garnett.

Larry was retired from Metro Transit, where he was the body shop supervisor. He took great pride in painting and decaling Metro Transit buses. Prior to his many years at Metro Transit, he opened his own body shop in Mount Uniacke and also worked at the Halifax Water Commission.

Larry had a passion for painting and restoring antique cars and motorcycles for many fortunate people. He was always tinkering with something out in his garage/man cave. Dad enjoyed life and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He loved camping and relaxing around a camp fire, he never missed an opportunity to crack a joke or tease someone, and most of all never missed an opportunity for a water fight. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

We will be having a graveside service for him on Saturday June 25, 2022 at 1 p.m. in Sandy Hill Cemetery, Hardwoodlands, followed by a reception at 2 p.m. in Hardwoodlands Community Center.

Heather Janette Baker

Baker, Heather Janette – Age 74, of Oyster Pond passed away unexpectedly on June 12, 2022 from complications of a heart attack.

Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late John and Iona (Williams) Jennex.

Heather was a faithful member of Jeddore United Baptist Church where she held many positions in the life of the church. She enjoyed travelling, camping and family gatherings.

Family was her pride and joy and she will always be loved and missed by her husband of 52 years, Gary; sons, David (Debbie), Darrel (Veronica); step-daughter, Penny (Bruno); grandchildren, Brendan, Rachael, Erynn, Ethan, Natalie, Danielle and Courtney; great-granddaughters, Alivia and Laila; brother-in-law, Everett Hopkins; Baker sisters-in-law, Beverly (Harry), Connie; brothers-in-law, Kevin (Susan), Barry (Noreen); special friends, Dave and Marlene Farrell; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Vera.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 23 at 2 p.m. in Jeddore United Baptist Church with Rev. Aubrey Deslatte officiating. Family flowers only.

Leona Christina MacDow

MacDow, Leona Christina – Age 50, of Rocklin and formerly of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away June 8, 2022 at home.

Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Norma (Stewart) MacDow.

Leona crafted handiwork, particularly crocheting and knitting, making many afghans, scarves and dishcloths for others. She enjoyed animals, especially cats and her dog, Timbit. She was an outdoor person who enjoyed gardening.

For many years she worked as a CCA in Middle Musquodoboit, Braeside Nursing Home and Elk Court in Brookfield.

Surviving are her partner, Vince Mallory; daughters, Amber (Ben), Upper Musquodoboit; Leanne, Dutch Settlement; Katie, Cooks Brook; son, Liam, Cooks Brook; sisters, Violet (Garnet) Leslie, Upper Musquodoboit; Theresa (Dan Fletcher), Bass River; brother, William, Middle Musquodoboit; and many cousins.

Funeral service will be Saturday, at 3 p.m. in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit.

Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

John Allan MacDonald

MacDonald, John Allan – The peaceful passing of John Allan MacDonald occurred in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on June 6, 2022 after a lengthy battle with Interstitial Lung Disease.

Born in Petrolia, ON, the third of four sons born to the late Roger and Marion (Ramey) MacDonald of Bridgewater. His father being a career soldier didn’t meet John until 1946 when he was discharged from the army and the family moved to Spryfield.

John graduated from Halifax West High School then he trained at Halifax Vocational School to become an Industrial Electrician, graduating in 1964. He practiced his trade in Halifax until 1972 when he moved to New Brunswick changed careers becoming a salesman until 1987 with Martin Black when he joined the firm of Sanctions. Here he sold road construction equipment until 2001 when he had to take early retirement due to health reasons.

John had a great sense of humor, may never have lost his temper but couldn’t tolerate incompetence, could talk about anything and everything, often said he knew everything and what he didn’t know was not worth knowing, loved meeting people and no one was a stranger. He had many interests and hobbies, loved camping (in a motor home), old cars, trucks and trains, covered bridges, and he built and flew model airplanes.

The first year of his illness he built and ran an N gauge railroad making all the buildings, scenery, etc. by hand but his greatest obsession was computers +++.

He was very grateful that at the age of 63 he became a friend of Bill W. and Dr. Bob.

He was predeceased by his parents, Roger and Marion; his wife, Sharon Ashton; brother, David and sister-in-law, Margo.

He is survived by his wife, Ann (Fisher)(Ferris) MacDonald; brothers, James (Helen), Gary (Marylyn); five nephews and one niece; Sharon’s family, Cathy (Tim) Chapman; granddaughter, Christine (Warren Randall); grandson, Matthew (Gillian McEachern); three great-granddaughters; special family friends, Charlotte Smith and family; and Ann’s children, Gail and Jamie and their families.

The family extends deepest thanks to Dr. M. Cussen and staff at Hants Shore Medical Centre, Dr. Fahim, Respirologist, NS Continuing Care, VON home care and the very special team of palliative care and MAID in Colchester East Hants Health Centre. A special mention and many thanks to our neighbors on Kel Ry Drive.

As per John’s wishes, cremation will take place under the care of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit and an informal Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022 from 2-4 p.m in the Stewiacke Legion on George Street, Stewiacke.

Frank Douglas Deal

Deal, Frank Douglas – Age 73, of Elmsvale passed away peacefully in Dartmouth General Hospital on June 6, 2022 with his daughters by his side.

Born in Elmsvale, he was the oldest son of the late Douglas Deal and Irma (Fraser)(Deal) Archibald.

Frank worked for Nova Scotia Power for over 30 years and then retired to start his own locksmith business.

He loved learning new things and sharing his wisdom. Gy was a devoted grandfather to his seven grandchildren and was always willing to help them with their math assignments and tell tales from his mischievous childhood adventures.

He loved to watch wrestling, go for drives and listen to Shaggy’s reggae music.

Frank will forever be loved and missed by his daughters, Jennifer and Jeanette (Dana); grandchildren, Justin, Jaela, Delainie, Kaci, Bria, Jekaia, Janeka; brothers, Gordon, Kenneth (Eva); sister, Evelyn (Charlie); nieces and nephews; and his special girl, Tootsie.

Frank was predeceased by nephew, Andrew and the love of his life, Kathryn. He was heartbroken with the recent loss of his wife and the family takes comfort in knowing they have been reunited.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, June 12 from 1-3 at Evelyn’s house on Shady Lane.

Stephen "Steve" Ross Price

Price, Stephen “Steve” Ross – Age 68, of Halifax, NS, passed away June 4, 2022 at Oceanview Continuing Care.

Steve was born in Dean Settlement.  He worked as a technician in the Department of Psychology at Dalhousie University for many years, and was very proud to earn his B.Sc. in Psychology as a mature student.  Steve loved music, and played in bands in the Halifax area for many years.  He also loved animals, particularly cats.  He enjoyed photography, especially taking photos of nature.  Steve could always be counted on for a lively conversation, especially around politics.

Steve is survived by his brother, Bernie (Bonnie) Price, Dean Settlement; sisters, Shirley (Kemp) Melanson, Sandy Cove; Susan (John) Withrow, Mt. Uniacke; and Sandra Pate, LeDuc, Alberta.  He is also survived by his biological daughter, Valerie; and grandson, Jack, Fort McMurray, Alberta; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Steve was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Annie (Ross) Price; his brothers, Elroy, Richard and Dexter; and his sister-in-law, Betty.

Susan will host a celebration of Steve’s life at her home, 50 Withrow Lane, Mt. Uniacke on June 24th, 2022 from 7-10 p.m.  A family graveside service will be held June 25, 2022 at 2p.m. in the Dean Cemetery, Dean.  Donations in Steve’s memory may be made to Bide Awhile Animal Shelter or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
