Rose is survived by her daughter, Michelle (Pat) Walton; sons, Michael (Carol), Corey (Cindy James); grandchildren, Erica (Michael Manuel), Mitchell, Cameron; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Maxwell. She also survived by her sister, Joan (Alec) Dunbar; brother, Alton Archibald; sisters-in-law, Elenore Archibald, Josie Archibald, Kathy Marvin; brother-in-law, Norm Hardy; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins; including her two special cousins, Doris Knight and Sonja (Scott) Maclean; and her long-time friends, Rae Laberee and Sandra Kennedy.

Rose is predeceased by her husband, Bryan in 2019. Rose is also predeceased by her parents, George and Isabel (Hingley); brothers, Owen, Dexter, Henry, Phillip; sister, Vera (Tommy) Heighton, Connie (Ray) Barkhouse, Deborah Archibald; sisters-in-law, Joan Hardy and Margaret LeFort.

In 1959, Rose met her loving husband Bryan on a trip to Calgary with her brothers Owen, Dexter and Henry to find their fortune. Bryan’s career quickly had the couple moving across the country and settling in Nova Scotia. Over the years, Bryan’s career saw the family moving from place to place, but Rose always made each place feel like home for her family. In 1976, the Busby family settled back in Nova Scotia and would call this province home for the next 46 years. Once settled, Rose joined the garment manufacturer Stanfield’s Limited as a seamstress. Rose met many wonderful friends during her 30-year career at Stanfield’s; she retired in 2011 at age 70.

Rose loved spending time with her family and friends. Rose hosted many family gatherings at their home in Brookfield over the years, and welcomed friends, family, and neighbors into her home with open arms. Rose had a passion for sewing and a love for gardening; she also loved sitting and watching birds in her garden. Rose loved competition and didn’t miss an opportunity to take on anyone in washer toss or horseshoes. Rose loved to travel and made frequent trips out west to spend time with her family and friends. One of Rose’s fondest memories was the twice a year girls weekends spent at the farm with her daughter, daughters-in-law, cousins and friends. Rose will be remembered for her great smile, never ending hugs, and wonderful sense of humor.

There will be no formal funeral service, but a private burial will take place at the Kemptown Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Martha Elaine (Langille) Annand

Annand, Martha Elaine (Langille) – Age 90, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 4, 2022.  She was born in Riversdale, Colchester County, a daughter of William and Lucy Anne (Naugler) Langille.

Martha received her early education in Truro.  In 1953 she graduated from the NS Hospital with her nursing degree.  She worked at the Colchester Regional Hospital and did numerous hours of private duty nursing.  She continued to be involved with nursing as a board member on the VON and through her readiness to bake a pan of squares or make a batch of soup for someone who was under the weather or battling an illness.

Martha played women’s softball with the Truro Slugs, winning 1945, 1946, and 1950 provincial titles and creating many lifelong friendships.  She was very proud of her team when they were inducted into the NS Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.

On April 3, 1954, Martha married Charles Annand.  They were both active members of St. Andrew’s Church and avid skiers at Ski Wentworth.  Martha especially loved skating at Hamilton’s Outdoor Rink with Mary as young kids, fishing with her brothers and sisters at Trout Lake and bridge night with the girls.  She enjoyed travelling all around the Maritimes to watch Scott’s football games and flying to Calgary to see Lara.

But her most treasured spot was the cottage where summers were filled with swimming, vegetable gardening, tending to her sweet peas, watching the hummingbirds and walking the beach with her grandchildren Megan, Emily and Drew.  Each evening at the cottage she could be found watching for the blue herons as the sunset dipped into the ocean.

In the last ten years of her life, she fought hard against dementia.  Thank you to Dr. Bower, the staff at Karlaine Place and the staff at The Mira, Mayflower Lane, especially Kelly, Tina, and Connie.

Martha was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Charlie (2002).  She was also pre-deceased by brothers, Bob, Doug, Chester and Elmer and sisters, Jean, Dorothy, Muriel, Mildred and Lillian.  She is survived by her identical twin sister, Mary, whose love, and support has no words. Their bond could not even be broken by dementia when mom’s only word was Mary.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Scott (Patty) Annand, Lara (Dannie) MacNeil.  Her granddaughters, Megan and Emily will remember all the fun times with Nana walking in the woods, searching for beach glass and baking treats.  Her grandson, Drew colored many pictures for Nana’s room at The Mira and loved telling her stories on the phone.  She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

We would also like to recognize and thank St. Andrew’s United Church for the many years of support for mom.  The church held a special place in her heart.

Margery Jean Crooks, BA (Dalhousie), Maritime School of Social Work, 1952-53

Crooks, Margery Jean (MacLean) – Age 90, beloved daughter of the late Margaret (Fraser) and A. Frank MacLean, died, enfolded by love, May 1, 2022 in Truro.

Avid reader and award-winning student, Margery was salutatorian for the graduating class of Sydney Academy in 1949.  She then studied arts and played varsity basketball at Dalhousie University, graduating with a BA in 1952.  Finally, she studied at the Maritime School of Social Work, taking multiple prizes there before heading into the work force in 1953.

In 1956, Margery married Robert A. Crooks, her lifelong love and partner in all things.  For the next 40 years, she sewed her passion for social work and community outreach seamlessly into the fabric of his ministry in their beloved United Church of Canada.  She worked for departments of Child Welfare, Mental Health and Social Services in four different provinces.  Active in the social mission of every congregation in which her husband, Bob served, she volunteered with libraries, seniors, refugees, those in palliative care and those living with cancer.  At the same time, she raised a family of four children into which she welcomed partners and friends in the same spirit of love and generosity that she had already welcomed the partners and friends of her four brothers.

Margery leaves an extended family deep in mourning and thanksgiving: her children, Jamie (Willa), Cathie, Chrissie (Robert) and Tim (Alison) – and her grandchildren, Bill and Sam, Sydney and Jackson, Whitney, Ellis and N’Kysha, and Lily.  She also leaves brothers, Ian, Sandy (Lila), Hugh (Norma) and Alan (Alison); brother-in-law, Roland (Jean); sister-in-law, Marilyn, and 17 nieces and nephews.

Anyone who knew Marge will remember her dedication to fitness (walking/yoga), her abiding interest in the lives and activities of others, her resolute open-heartedness, and the unassailable bedrock of her Christian faith – a sliding scale of everyday disciplines beginning with the body and ending with the divine.  For her children, the ‘flower’ in the ‘bulb’ of those everyday disciplines was nothing less than the adult worlds we live in.   It’s no exaggeration to say that the social, intellectual and spiritual engagements that have given our lives meaning grew up, one and all, in the garden she cultivated.  On her final day, we saw the bounty of that garden one last time.  God in front of her and family at her side, she departed earthly life awash in love without so much as a hint of fear, despair or regret.

Funeral service will take place Tuesday, June 7th at 2:00 p.m. in First United Church, Truro. Please note that masks and physical distancing will be required.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Margery’s memory may be made to The First United Church Restoration Fund, Truro, The United Church Camp Meeting Association (Berwick Camp), and/or Phoenix Youth Programs, Halifax.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia.

Heather "Ruth" (Martin) Romo

Romo (Martin), Heather “Ruth” – Age 74, of Dartmouth and Chezzetcook, passed away Tuesday, April 26th, 2022, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, embraced by her family. Born in 1947, she was the daughter of the late John and Marjorie (Williams) Martin.

Ruth was predeceased by her brothers, Phillip, Cyril, Wish, Ronnie, Roy, and Percy “Bub”. She is survived by her lovingly devoted companion and husband of her heart, John Muise; daughters, Wanda (Sam) Bowser, Heather Romo, Paula (Mark) Keizer, Kimberly (Mark) Skinner; grandchildren, Gloria, Edmond, Clarice, Stacy, Kacey, Mikayla, Jenny, Lily, Paige; sister, Donna (Kenneth) Goldsworthy; brother, Ralph and many nieces and nephews.

As a young woman, Ruth was proud to have worked at the Halifax School for the Blind. She then met and married her ex-husband, Weldon Romo, staying home to raise her quickly growing family. Ruth kept an immaculate house! A typical day may find the girls all set to assigned tasks. Applying floor wax with woollen socks to the linoleum floors, polishing the banister with lemon oil, washing windows, hanging laundry or dusting furniture; cleanliness was next to Godliness in our Mother's house! Ah, but there was laughter; many of Ruth's treasured memories were of times spent (often with extended family members and friends) all crammed together in our tiny one-room shack on Fisherman's Beach in Lower East Chezzetcook. A woman of strong faith, Ruth was a firm believer in the power of prayer. She taught Sunday school, kept a bible at her bedside and utilized the comfort of her rosary beads in times of worry or uncertainty, thankfulness and contemplation. If you were a friend, neighbour, or family member in need, Ruth was there for you in whatever capacity was within her means to help. Be it a loaf of bread, a shared meal, mending a shirt or simply lending an ear, Ruth cared by lending herself. Her nurturing nature was far-reaching, extending beyond her cherished grandchildren to include those who will remember her fondly as the community Nanny. An avid reader, she also enjoyed playing cards, Wordsearch and Crosswords. Until her recent illness, Ruth was keen on weekly and often daily car drives to the country with John. In 2021, Ruth was overjoyed to become a great-grandmother to identical twin boys, Jonathan and Jesse Cox. We will miss her dearly and forever hold her in our hearts.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A funeral service with reception to follow will be held Monday, May 2nd at 11 a.m. in Saint Genevieve Church, East Chezzetcook, with Father Jimmy Richards, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, N.S.

John "Jack" Reginald Worthing

Worthing, John Reginald “Jack” - 1941-2022, Salmon River Bridge, Jeddore. It is with the deepest of heartaches that we announce the passing of Jack, husband, father, and grandfather, in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, on April 22, 2022, just shy of his 81st birthday. He was our rock, our ship in stormy seas.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Marion (Day); daughters, Dianna (Fred) Dalrymple, Catherine (Mark) Cornelius, and Donna (Michael) Higgins; grandsons, Alex, Cody, David (Jenna), Timothy and great-grandson, Benjamin; brother, Donald Baker; and many nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by parents, Elsie (Baker)Worthing Baker and Reg Worthing; sister, Joan; brother-in-law, Watson Patterson, and nephew, Reid Patterson.

Jack was a fisherman all his working life and a proud volunteer at Memory Lane Heritage Village, Lake Charlotte and the Fisherman’s Life Museum, Oyster Pond. Jack loved his volunteering days and had many a tale to tell those who would stop in to visit. He wasn’t a very demonstrative man, but we knew that he cared and loved us. His giggle was infectious, and his stories were tall. His grandchildren were the apples of his eye, and he was looking forward to his visits with his new great-grandson. You could always count on his stories and how he would often say ‘they must be pretty old now’ as he didn’t see himself as being old.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Burial will be at a later date with close family and friends attending.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
