Rodney Edward Vaughan

Vaughan, Rodney Edward – Rodney Edward Vaughan passed away peacefully March 10, 2022, two weeks short of his 87th birthday. Beloved only child of Christine and Dimmock Vaughan he was born in Wolfville in 1935. He attended Acadia University, McGill and Ontario Institute for Studies in Education where he also worked. Ahead of his time, and never one to conform he was the first student to sport a beard at Acadia and often told the story of jumping through windows when late for class.

Artistic, brilliant, generous, stubborn, funny, deeply moral, devoted father and teacher, he is fondly remembered by students at MRHS where he shared his love of running, trivia, astronomy, computers, juggling and skipping. Ever optimistic, he encouraged students and strangers alike to reach their full potential and become the "master of their destiny".

Rodney founded Musquodoboit’s "Valley Views" newspaper and was actively involved with the Unitarian Church, where he married the second and longest love of his life, Barbara Harsanyi.

Always inclusive, Barbara and Rodney helmed a large extended family, and enjoyed years of happy times together at Hobbiton, swimming, kayaking and hiking with family and friends and travelling together to Europe and the Caribbean.

Fiercely independent, he ran marathons and had a wild dedication to fitness. Rodney lived at home until the last possible moment, when declining health brought him to the QE2 and VG. Many thanks to the dedicated staff who cared for him throughout the fall and winter and to "Lord and Lady Kelly" who looked out for both him and Barbara.  Your kindness and consideration are greatly appreciated.

Rodneys' gentle nature, curiosity, love of debate, open mindedness, multi paged verses, and passion for learning will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. 

He leaves behind wife, Barbara; former wife, Rose; children, Nika (Steve) and Jeremy (Karin); foster child, Chris; grandchildren, Geordie (Danielle), Holly, Anna (Eric), Erica and Nick; great-grandchildren, Thomas, Lucy and Alex.

Sadly, predeceased by step-daughter, Daina.

A celebration of life will be held in the summer.

Leslie Albert Wood

Wood, Leslie Albert – Age 75, of Head of Jeddore, passed away March 9, 2022 in Parkland at the Lakes, Dartmouth.

Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Rev. Laurie and Enid (Dobson) Wood.

Surviving are his wife, Dawn (Cooper); daughter, Michelle (Greg) MacKenzie; son, Michael; grandsons, Adam, Cameron and Ewan; brother, David (Jane); sisters, June, Margaret (Paul).

Dale Marie Neil

Neil, Dale Marie – age 67, of Meaghers Grant, passed away March 1, 2022 at home.

Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Freeman Osborne and the late Shirley (Grady) Osborne-Gilliam.

She loved being at the camp in Lake Charlotte, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always had her dog, Roxy by her side.

Surviving are children, Stacey (Leonard White), Tracey (Gary Duggan), Harold “Bud” (Yvelle); and their father, Harold Neil; siblings, David, Greta, Randy (Michelle), Jamie (Cathy), Sherry; grandchildren, Samantha, Colin, Taylor, Diane, Garrett, Cohen, Izzy; great-grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Gracelynn, James; life partner, Harry Stevens; Harry’s siblings, Sheila, Carolyn, Heather, Shirley, Beatrice, Jessie, Faye, Donna, Tony; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Pauline; and step-father, James Gilliam.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Elizabeth "Beth" Dianne Newell-Friis

Newell-Friis, Elizabeth Dianne “Beth” – Beth passed away peacefully in her home on March 1, 2022.  Beth was born in 1957 in Grand Manan, NB. 

She is survived by her husband of eight years, Chris Friis; sister, Glenna Richardson and brother-in-law, David; brother, Robert Newell; brother, David Newell and sister-in-law, Jean together with nieces and nephews. 

As a young adult, Beth gave her heart to Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior joining Youth With A Mission where she travelled the world telling others of Him.  Beth became a member of Motis O Dance Theatre in Ontario and worshipped the Lord through her love of dance.  Beth relocated to rural Nova Scotia in her early forties and purchased a beautiful ocean front home in Lawrencetown.  Beth was a beloved therapist in private practice and devoted her life to the healing of others openly sharing her faith in Jesus inspiring them toward a personal relationship with Him.  Beth was very involved in her faith community in Good Shepherd Church, Lawrencetown where she served in many different capacities promoting her love of the dance.  In more recent years, Beth had a vision for a new recreational activity in Lawrencetown called the Flying Project which offered persons with physical disabilities the chance to fly on bungee cords giving them greater freedom of movement.  Every summer Beth shared her love of dance at the Atlantic Christian Ashram. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Good Shepherd Church, Lawrencetown on April 6, 2022 at 1pm. Donations in memory of Beth may be made to Project Colors International, a small non-profit aid society committed to uplifting children, families, animals and communities around the globe.

Agnes Flora Hyslop

Hyslop, Agnes Flora – Age 88, of Fletchers Lake, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2022 with family by her side.

Born in Fletchers Lake, she was a daughter of the late Dennis and Cora (MacDonald) Vaughan.

Mom was an amazing person who was always there to help others. She could be counted on to be there for you and always put you ahead of herself. Her dedicated faith in Jehovah helped her through the hard times in life.

Surviving are sisters, Joyce Patriquin, Judy Publicover; children, Patricia (William) Page, Derrick (Sunny), Jeffrey, Annabelle Hyslop (Bill); eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandson.

She was predeceased by her husband, Twin; son, Gregory; daughter, Abagail; sisters, Gladys, Ruth; brothers, George, Herb, Hector and Frank.

Cremation has taken place.

Logan Frederick Shaw

Shaw, Logan Frederick – Age 65, of Upper Stewiacke, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2022 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Richard and Emily (Lemon) Shaw.

Surviving are Kim Werkman; son, Richard (Jen); daughter, Toni (Chuck) Rines; former wife, Heather Shaw; grandchildren, Dominic, Ben, Trinity, Abby; sisters, Marg (Fred) Ashe, Betty (Stephen) Johnson; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by brother, Allen.

A graveside service will be held in the spring in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke.

Marny Isabel Roode

Roode, Marny Isabel – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marny Isabel (Cole) Roode of College Lake, at the age of 80 years. Marny passed away peacefully on February 25, 2022, in Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, surrounded by her family. She was born in Grand Manan, N.B. and grew up in Collingwood, N.S.

Marny trained to be an RN at Amherst Hospital and Children’s Hospital, Halifax and worked at Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital and Children’s Hospital, Pictou. Along with her family, she spent many memorable years creating numerous travelling and camping adventures throughout the Maritimes. She was an avid sports fan, and cherished her beloved Senators and Blue Jays. She was never at a loss for conversation, as she knew every player and statistic on her teams.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Donnie; daughter, Debbie (Tom), Scotsburn; son, Barry, Italy; sister, Joanne, Clearwater, B.C.; nieces and nephews, Catherine, Norm, and Jerri; grandchildren, Brett (James), Isaac (Ericka), Cole; and great-grandchildren, Hunter, Brock and Autumn.

She was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Margaret Cole, Oxford; and her sister, Dawn, Vancouver.

We offer a special thanks for the compassion shown by Dr. Anne Kwasnik and staff on 4th floor and Palliative Care Units, Aberdeen Hospital.

A graveside funeral will be held, later in the summer, at Wyvern cemetery, Wyvern, Cumberland County.

Ruth "Ruthie" Brown

Brown, Ruth “Ruthie” – The peaceful death occurred in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, on February 25, 2022, of Ruth "Ruthie" (MacDonald) Brown of Enfield, in her 90th year. She was the wife of the late John Brown. Ruthie was born in Souris, PEI, a daughter of the late Hubert-Alec and Alice “Bessie” MacDonald.

She is survived by her son, Christopher; brothers, Billy and Syl; sister, Sheila Guay; many nieces and nephews; dear friends, Jack and Lavern; and caregiver and friend, Adam, who was like a son to her.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Francis, Alexander, Gordon "Buddy", John E. “Johnny”, Harry; sisters, Alice Elizabeth “Betty”, Helen “Daisy”, Gertrude “Gerty”, Dorothy, Edna, Elsie, Edie and Catherine “Kay”.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A funeral mass and burial will take place at Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church at a later date in the spring. Ruthie's family would like to acknowledge and thank Jack, Lavern and Adam for the care, friendship and support provided to Ruthie.

Treva Isabella "Peggy" Dalrymple

Dalrymple, Treva Isabella “Peggy” – age 84, of Dartmouth and formerly of Clam Bay, passed away peacefully at home on February 24, 2022. 

Born in Middle Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth Farrell and Rosamont Miller but was brought up from the age of two by the late Alexander “Sandy” and Maud Webber of Clam Bay. 

Family meant a lot to her and if you needed to know anything about family you only needed to ask her.  She was really looking forward to the birth of her newest great-grandchild in April 2022.

Surviving are her sons, Frederick (Dianna), Clam Harbour; Charles (Angela), Clam Bay; daughters, Roseta (Ronald) Power, Lake Charlotte; Wanda (Keith) Laybolt, Clam Harbour; Maude (Mike Quinn), Head Chezzetcook; Suzanne (Fred) Schroedter, Ontario; Donna (Doug) Richards, Belleville, ON; and Bonnie (Rick) Shaw, Hillman, Michigan; daughter-in-law, Dixie Dalrymple, Head Jeddore; brothers, Barry Hubley, New Brunswick; Brian Hubley and Tim Hubley, Hubbards; 22 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and lots of nieces and nephews. 

She was predeceased by her husband, Lowell “Frank”; son, Blois; granddaughter, Rebecca; and brother, Charles “Buddy” Hubley. Although she was not a Webber by blood, she always considered herself a Webber and was predeceased by Harold, Shirley (Sherwood), Hazel, Jeff, Bill and Bernard. 

The family would like to give a special thanks to Rose Webber for being such a great neighbour to Mom.

Randal Howard Graham

Graham, Randal Howard – Age 55, of Truro and formerly of Upper Stewiacke, passed away February 23, 2022 in QE11 Infirmary site, Halifax.

Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, he was a son of Shirley (MacKay) Graham, Brookfield and the late Howard Graham.

Besides his mother, Randy is survived by brother, Jeff (Nichole); nephews, Ty and Chase; niece, Rachel, all of Okotoks, Alberta; his special friend and partner, Tammy Lea Bendle, Truro; many aunts and uncles.

He was predeceased by his father, Howard; sister, Terri Anne; paternal grandparents, Maxwell and Rita Graham; maternal grandparents, Wallace and Mildred MacKay; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Steven John Skipper

Skipper, Steven John – Son of Lawrence Skipper and the late Irene (Brown) Skipper, passed away at age 66 at home in Wittenburg. He was born in Windsor, and with his father in the military, Steven grew up in several Canadian cities, as well as Germany. He graduated from Dalhousie University and had a long career with the provincial Department of the Environment.

Steven expressed his creative side in crafting elaborate model railroad scenery, and in producing many wood carvings, which he shared with friends and family. He had a great ability for caring and keeping plants, as well as brewing beer and winemaking.  These hobbies paired well with his passion for friendly conversation and story telling, neither of which he could ever tire of.  

For many years, Steven also volunteered with Scouts Canada and practiced Tai Chi. He felt most at home in nature, taking long walks in the woods, always accompanied by his faithful canine companion, Lucy. During his final illness, he expressed a desire to volunteer with the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Donations in memory may be made there, as well as Hope for Wildlife.

Besides his father, Lawrence, Steven is survived by his wife, Julia; son, Mark (Stephanie); daughter, Sarah Rose (Derek); grandchildren, Olivia and Benjamin Rose; sister, Roxanne; brother, Alan (Tina).

Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Arimathea Funeral Cooperative. No visitation or service in accordance with Steven's wishes, private interment will be at a later date.

Yvonne Mary Dahr

Dahr, Yvonne Mary – Age 63, of Hilden and formerly of Upper Musquodoboit passed away February 17, 2022 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born in River Bourgeois, she was a daughter of the late George and Ethel (Landry) Bowser.

Yvonne was full of life and enjoyed darts, cards, bingo, fishing, dancing and meeting people. She loved her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, particularly her great nephew, Dexter.

Yvonne will always be missed by her husband, Gerald; sisters, Anne (Ronald) Delorey, Joan (Melvin) MacLeod; brother, Leo (Sheila) Bowser; step-daughters, Janet (Matthew) Miller, Florence Dahr, Stephanie (Daryl) Cull; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by sisters, Marie Delorey, Rita Grant; brother, Blair Bowser in infancy; great-grandson, Kyle.

Cremation has taken place.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit.

Shirley Anne Hutchinson

Hutchinson, Shirley Anne – Age 79, of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2022 at home with her family around her. Born in Musquodoboit Harbour, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Agatha (Young) Mosher.

Shirley enjoyed her career in nursing at Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital from 1965 to retirement in 2003. Her care showed through with her rural nursing that was blended with diabetic clinics and foot care. Her many years of service in Scouting touched a number of lives and created lasting friendships. Shirley’s creativity, skill and care shone the brightest with her knitting “socks for everyone”.

She will always be loved and missed by siblings, David (Ann), Alan (Donna), Terry; sisters-in-law, Mary and Pru; sons, Randall (Karen), Stacey (Rose), Cory (Kim); daughters-in-law, Anna-Marie, June, Karen; grandchildren, Brandon (Emily), Lucas, Tristan, Evan, Nolan, Amelia; great-grandson, James; step-granddaughter, Haley (Cody); step-great-granddaughter, Lily Ann; many nieces and nephews and the friends she made along the way.

She was predeceased by husband, James “Jim”; brothers, Barry and Michael.

Cremation has taken place.

Kathryn "Kathy" Elaine Deal

Deal, Kathryn “Kathy” Elaine – Age 70, of Elmsvale passed away unexpectedly on February 13, 2022 at home.

Born in Middle Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Hedley and Jean (Stewart) Tree.

Kathy was a stay-at-home mom who enjoyed sewing, baking, making pickles and reading Debbie MacComber books. She was a devoted Neena to her beloved grandchildren.

She will forever be loved and missed by her husband of 50 years, Frank; daughters, Jennifer, Jeanette (Dana); grandchildren, Justin, Jaela, Delainie, Kaci, Bria, Jekaia, Janeka; brother, Donnie; and extended Deal family members.

Cremation has taken place.

Una Shirley (Williams) Beck

Beck (Williams), Una Shirley – It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Una Shirley (Williams) Beck on February 13, 2022 in Victoria General Hospital with her family by her side. She was 88.  

Born in Ostrea Lake, she was a devoted home maker for most of her life. She found pleasure in helping and comforting others. She was a trained palliative care volunteer. For many years she supported countless charities to the best of her ability. She also enjoyed her years of service to the ladies auxiliary at Legion Branch 153.   

Her undying faith in the church had her working in various roles throughout her life, including eucharistic minister. This is where she found her greatest strength.

She was predeceased by her parents, Jeffery and Olive Williams; brothers, Alton and Owen Williams; sisters, Eileen Manual, Dorothy Prowse and Audrey Eisan; nephews, Donald Manual and Owen "Chopper" Williams. 

She is survived by her son, Jeffery Gander; daughter, Carolyn (Gary) Sarty; grandsons, Brad and Evan (Courtney) Snow; great-granddaughter, Harper Snow; and sister, Olive Williams.  

A very special thank you to her niece, Susan Barnhill, the VON's, Continuing Care NS, and the staff of Infirmary 8.4 wing, Abbie J. Lane 9th floor Geriatric Unit and Victoria General 9A wing for their great care and support during Mom’s declining health.          

There will not be any visitation. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Neil McCorkill

McCorkill, Neil - age 68, of Nine Mile River, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2022 after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer.  

He leaves behind his companion, best friend, and wife of 39 years, Sandra Mallard; and his two furry buddies, Derby and Yoda. 

He is survived by siblings, Wendy, Sheila (Frank) Ross, Brian, all of Nine Mile River; Linda (Fulton) Killen, Alberta; and special brother, Gary (Bonnie) Fisher, Truro; several nieces and nephews, "you know who you are".  

Neil was predeceased by his parents, Gary and Marjorie McCorkill; his younger brother, Kevin; brother-in-law, Raymond Thompson; and sister-in-law, Jean McCorkill.  

Neil worked in the oil industry as a sales agent/dispatcher for the past 47 years with Gulf Canada, Keith Major Fuels, Ken Howlett Fuels, Ultramar, and Total Canada; most recently being self-employed at home selling petroleum products. 

He was a committed goaltender with East Hants Gentlemen's Hockey League for over 36 years and played on two fun curling teams in Brookfield and Lantz. With Sandra's help, Neil organized and ran the Friday night Ultramar Bowling League for 16 years, as well as being an active member of Enfield & District Lions Club for numerous years.

He invested many hours and enjoyed playing with his model train collection with a "small setup", HO scale for those who know their trains. 

A diehard Montreal Canadiens' fan, Neil could always be found wearing the team's attire. He wouldn't miss a game and watched them lift the Stanley Cup 11 times, the last in 1993. 

Neil and Sandra enjoyed travelling and taking trips with Lindy and Ab to the States. Summers were spent camping with family and friends, with the last 27 years spent "at the lake". Neil particularly enjoyed taking visitors out on the pontoon boat and enjoying "a glass of milk". 

Special thanks to all the staff in the chemo unit at the Truro Hospital, in particular Diana, Julia, Mary and Dr. Rowe; Dr. Bruce Caldwell and staff at the Halifax Oncology unit, who were "always there for me". Heartfelt thanks to Amherst and East Hants VON, Dawn Ross and Dr. Cortney Smith for all their care and compassion.  Many thanks to our wonderful friends and neighbors for all of your support. 

In memory of Neil, donations may be made to your local SPCA or an animal shelter of your choice.

Joan Phyllis (Currie) Grant

Grant (Currie), Joan Phyllis – It is with great sadness and sorrow that we send our mother to fly with her heavenly angels. On February 9, 2022, Joan finished her earthly life peacefully in Vimy Court nursing home, surrounded by her family. We wish her all the best as she begins her new journey in God’s everlasting care.  She is now free to fly among the angels with her beloved mother.

Joan was born in Dartmouth to parents, George and Jane Currie. With seven siblings, it was no surprise when she followed her heart into the nursing field in her adult life. As her family grew, Joan moved to Stewiacke where she had many wonderful friends. Joan spent many years knitting and spoiling her grandchildren. 

Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by brother, Phillip; infant brother, Roy; sister, Georgena “Gena”; and her children’s fathers.

She is survived by brothers, Steve, Fred; sisters, Ruth, Rosemary; children, Charlotte (Ross), Gloria (Roger), Phyllis (Darren), Kathy (Scott) and Kenny; grandchildren, Kim, Matt, Amanda, Becky, Christian, Vince, Jason, Nathan; great-grandchildren Emily, Mason, Joey, Zachary, Kali, Holton, Abby.

At this time, we would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude for everything the wonderful staff of Vimy Court have done to ensure the best quality of life for Joan during her time with them.

Ralph "Glenn" Stoddard

Stoddard, Ralph “Glenn” – Age 79, of Clam Harbour, passed away February 6, 2022 in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Glenn was a devoted Baptist, and is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his mother, Anita Lewin; his daughter, Shelley; his son, Jeffery; and their mother, Elizabeth Nickerson. 

He was predeceased by his father, Ralph Stoddard. 

Glenn grew up in Halifax and Port Mouton, and later settled in Clam Harbour. He worked as a firefighter for the City of Halifax, as a truck driver for the Paper House in Dartmouth, and later in life he drove a school bus on the Eastern Shore. 

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Arnold Robert Myrer

Myrer, Arnold Robert – Age 89, passed away at home on February 5, 2022.

Born in Porters Lake, he was a son of the late Robert and Rilla (Conrod) Myrer. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen (Beck) and his son, Kevin.

Arnold began working in the construction industry at an early age and went on to have his own construction company building many homes and buildings around the metro area. In 1971 he became the manager with Shipley Greenhouses in Woodville, N.S. and later in 1975 with Plant Care in Enfield. He retired at the age of 60 in 1992. Arnold enjoyed his later years creating many wood working projects such as picture frames, jewelry boxes, glider rocking chair and stool, plant stands and a cradle to name few. He had an amazing ability to visualize things and build them without plans or instructions. He also became skilled at creating beautiful stained glass pieces.

Arnold was a great family man and spent extensive time with his daughter and grandchildren always being there when any of them needed something.

He also was a great support of his community and was a member of the Enfield Lions Club for over 40 years.

Arnold is survived by his daughter, Brenda Fletcher; grandchildren, Kevin, Krista and Kelsey; great-grandchildren, Kelton, Keaton and Kinsey; and sister, Irene Myrer. 

There will be a graveside committal service later in the spring at St. Marks Anglican Church Cemetery in Porter's Lake.

Donald "Richard" Horne

Horne, Donald “Richard” – Age 73, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully in Halifax Infirmary Site, QEII on Saturday, February 5, 2022.

Born in Mooseland, he was a son of the late Inez and Alfred Horne.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He treasured special times playing cards and Tetris with his family, road trips, bingo, horse races and coffee with his best friend, Malek. He was truly admired for his strength, courage, his very kind heart and his peaceful nature.

He will be very missed by his children, Janice (Tommy) and Donald (Brenda). He was a great brother to Colin, Greg, Marjorie, Lauriel, Gordon and Douglas. He is also survived by grandchildren, Melissa, Jessica, Crystal, Jennifer, Michael, Alicia, Codie and Jacob; as well as great-grandchildren, Hailey, Ethan, Aleah, Jayden, Emma, Olivia, Madison, Gracie, Caiden, Jameson, Luca and Haedyn.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Horne; daughter, Jeanette Horne; sisters, Laverne Glawson and Alice Hickman.
