Jonathan "Jon" Allan Mallov

mallov, jonathan.jpg

Mallov, Jonathan “Jon” Allan – Age 69 of Salmon River, passed away June 7, 2020 in Halifax Infirmary, QEII due to complications from a stroke.

Born in Syracuse, New York, he was a son of the late Samuel and Charlotte (Wolkov) Mallov.

Jon graduated from William Nottingham High School in Syracuse, NY, and went on to attend University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Queen’s University, Kingston, Ont.; and University of Windsor, Windsor, Ont. He took various jobs in the accounting field and because he wanted to live in Canada, and had connections in Truro, when the position of Firm Administrator became available at Burchell MacDougall Law Firm, he applied and was accepted.  He moved his young family to Truro in December 1988, and enjoyed working at the law firm until his retirement in 2016.

Traveling was one of Jon’s main interests and he went to New York City on several occasions to meet with old friends and enjoy the city. After meeting Sherri, he took her along. Sherri and Jon traveled together to San Francisco, Calif.; Yellowknife, N.W.T.; Edmonton, Alta.; and on to Vancouver and Portland, Ore., via train. They also traveled to Scotland twice; Ireland, and almost yearly by train to Jon’s “spiritual Home” in Montreal. He managed to find jazz clubs and second-hand bookstores in most of the places he visited.

Jon was known locally for his great saxophone sound. He had played the sax since he was 12 years old and could pick up a tune from any band he sat in with. His Parkinson’s disease diagnosis of 2012, made it more difficult to play, but he persevered and was even able to record and post a short addition to the Ultimate Online Nova Scotia Kitchen Party on Facebook.

Reading obscure novels was another of Jon’s pastimes. He found some real treasures on his excursions to second-hand bookstores. Since he had read so many, he decided to try his hand at writing and so “The Deal” was born. It is a murder mystery set in his beloved Montreal and is in the hands of the publisher for review.

To get the necessary exercise everyday he took his best fur pal, Leo, for a walk around downtown Truro. To relax, he poured himself a good scotch and put a CD in his stereo. He had quite a collection, but especially enjoyed listening to various jazz musicians, many of whom he saw in person.

Jon was dedicated to his five sons and was so proud of their varied and unique accomplishments. He enjoyed participating in their Minor Hockey adventures, sometimes driving in less than optimal conditions. There were family trips to NHL games to watch his favorite team, the Montreal Canadiens. The Detroit Red Wings were second in line for his attention. It was a pleasure having the boys in the house for dinners and special occasions. He made a point to stay in contact frequently with each of them. Jon welcomed his stepchildren and grandchildren as his own. He was always interested in their lives and encouraged and assisted when needed. Jon was a gentle, kind and generous person who endeared himself to most people he knew. He had special connections to former colleagues from his time working in the USA and enjoyed close friendships with his Truro “surrogate family”.

Surviving are his wife, Sherri (Lynds); sons, Ian (Chloe), Toronto; James, Halifax; Ross, Truro; Stephen, Truro; Daniel, Halifax; stepchildren, Lori Holman (Nate), Noel Shore; Adam Holman (Vivek), Calgary; Jonathan Knight, Truro; grandchildren, Nicholas Gorman, Tyler Gorman and Ella Henderson, all of Truro; brother, Joe (Karen) Mallov, Portland, Ore.; one niece, two nephews and their families.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a gathering will be held at a later date. Donations in Jon’s memory may be made to Truro Homeless Outreach or Parkinson’s Canada.

James "Jim" Poole

poole, jim obit.jpg

Poole, James “Jim” – Age 73, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 5, 2020, following complications from surgery. Born in Harbour Breton, N.L., he was a son of the late Ernest “Jack” and Hazel (Evans) Poole. His family left Newfoundland for Nova Scotia when he was a child, and Nova Scotia became his forever home. He attended Saint Mary’s University in the late 1960s, getting degrees in both Arts and Education. It was while he was studying at Saint Mary’s that he met the love of his life, Lynn (Leslie), at a traffic light in Halifax. This chance encounter resulted in a shared life and enduring love of more than 52 years. Shortly after the birth of their daughter, Janelle; they moved to the small rural community of Middle Musquodoboit, where they both began teaching at local schools. In 1972 they took a leap and bought a small farm nearby, shortly after the birth of their son, Chris. This farm, which grew significantly in scope over the years, would become one of the cornerstones of who Jim Poole was. He became interested in purebred Shorthorn cattle and breeding and selling his own herd, which he did for more than 40 years. He remained active in the Shorthorn community, showing cattle at exhibitions across the province, as well as serving as president of the Canadian Shorthorn Association in the 1980s. Jim and his family also ran a large commercial hog operation on the farm for many years. Needless to say, his work ethic was top notch; during the 32 years that Jim worked as a teacher and guidance counsellor at Musquodoboit Rural High School, his evenings and weekends were filled with farm responsibilities, from fencing to tending to livestock to fixing whatever had broken along the way. He was renowned (in the family) for his creative use of profanity during annual hay-making season, when every piece of machinery had to break at least once a cycle. Jim was an active member of the Musquodoboit Valley community. In the 1980s, he took part in local theater productions, as well as directing and/or producing several high school plays. He was a member of the Lions Club for 15 years, where among other projects, he ran bingo for seniors. In his retirement years, he and Lynn spent most Monday mornings as part of a group singing at the Braeside Retirement Home, as well as in the church choir. Jim had a curious mindset and loved to travel and explore new places. He and Lynn had many adventures across Europe, the Caribbean, and North America, including a number of cruises with great friends. His last trip was a family vacation in Mexico in March – an incredible surprise for Jim and Lynn when both their children and their spouses joined them on their trip, creating wonderful memories. Jim had a rich sense of humor and loved to poke fun in a good-natured way. He loved his family fiercely and was a very proud father, grandfather and husband.  He will be dearly missed by his wife, Lynn; daughter, Janelle (Darek), Seattle; son, Chris (Natalie), Lantz; and grandchildren, Kayla and Tyler, Lantz. He was predeceased by his brother, Ernie.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a service will be held for family only. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s name may be made to Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation.

Arthur Dahr

dahr, art.png

Dahr, F. Arthur - It is with profound sadness that we tell you of the passing of our father on June 2, 2020 at age 85 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour. Dad succumbed to Parkinson’s Disease and a broken heart after the very recent passing of his wife, Ruby.

Arthur was born in Port Dufferin, a son of the late Walter and Nellie (McLellan) Dahr. His family moved to Caribou Gold Mines where he grew up and attended school until the age of 14, at which time he went to work in the woods to help support his younger brothers and sisters. After Arthur and Ruby married, they moved to Mooseland where they raised their three girls. Arthur worked in the forest industry all of his working days.

After Arthur retired, he enjoyed his vegetable gardens, building bird houses and feeders and puttering in his shed on other carpentry projects. He always looked forward to the Caribou Reunion Days and enjoyed helping with the construction of the boardwalk on the “Sands”. He was also an avid hunter and fur harvester and supporter of wildlife conservation. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing, and on his last fishing trip to Loon Pond (thank you Alan) he reeled in some really nice ones.

Arthur and Ruby’s door was always open and their home was host to countless family and friends gathering with wonderful home cooked meals and the odd game of washer toss and darts. Arthur always had a soft spot for cats and he and Ruby provided a good home for many over the years.

Arthur is survived by his daughters, Wanda (Boyd Prest); Sherry (Dwayne Murphy) and Tanya (Brian Bowser); grandchildren, Jonathan Murphy (Britney); Katelyn Murphy and Logan Bowser; great-grandchildren, Isabelle Murphy and Zachary Murphy.  He is also survived by sister, Jean Harnish; brother, Eric (Donna); sisters, Freda (Steve) Goddard; Wanneta (Wayne) Bowles and Judy (Kenny) Burgess; as well as many nieces and nephews. Arthur is predeceased by his wife, Ruby; brother, Tommy and brother-in-law, Murray Harnish.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, especially Dr. Karl Tenneson and Dr. Rob Merritt and all of the nurses who cared for Dad as their own.  A special thank you to the sitters who went the extra mile to keep Dad safe and content.

Due to COVID-19, there will be no funeral.  Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. There will be a family burial at a later date in St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery, Musquodoboit Harbour.

Memorial donations may be made to Parkinson’s Society of NS, NS SPCA  or charity of choice.

To quote Betty B – “Ruby and Arthur’s was a love story straight from a movie – the cute, young girl from Upper and the cool, handsome rebel from Caribou. It was so romantic.”

Dad is yodelling in heaven now.

Donald "Silver Donald" Cameron

cameron, silver donald.png

Donald Allan “Silver Donald” Cameron - June 1937 - June 1, 2020

With deep sadness we share that beloved Canadian author, environmentalist, communicator, activist and filmmaker Silver Donald Cameron passed away on June 1, 2020, in Halifax, from complications arising from lung cancer. His wife, Marjorie Simmins, was at his side. He was 82.

Born in Toronto and raised in Vancouver, Donald made a life in the Maritimes beginning in the 1960s, and in D'Escousse, Cape Breton, since 1971. He always said that when he came to the Maritimes, he knew he was home. He loved his sailing adventures in the Atlantic region and in the Bahamas and chronicled them in three different books.

In addition to his wife Marjorie, he is survived by brothers, David Cameron (Stevie), Toronto; Ken Cameron (Angie Walkinshaw), Vancouver; nieces, Tassie Cameron (Daniel Wong); Amy Cameron (John Rowley); and Jen Cameron (Hossein Maleki), Vancouver; great-nieces, Sadie, Toronto; and Molly, Toronto; and great-nephew, Will.

Donald was predeceased in 1996 by his wife, Lulu Terrio-Cameron, mother of his youngest son, Mark Terrio-Cameron, Medicine Hat, Alberta. His large and loving Terrio family will miss him greatly.

He is survived by former wife, Catherine Ann Cameron and their children, Maxwell A. Cameron (Fabiola Bazo) and grandson, Gabriel Cameron Bazo, Vancouver; Ian Cameron (Vilma) and grandson, Tahj, Vancouver; Leslie Cameron (Temple Burling) and grandchildren, Aidan and Esme, Kenosha, Wisconsin; and Steven Cameron (Sandra), Hamilton and grandchildren, Nathan Lynde and Samantha Cameron, Alberton, Prince Edward Island.

Don was cherished by his Simmins family: sister-in-law, Zoë Landale (Garnet Coburn, deceased), Pender Island, BC; niece, Jocelyn Coburn (Alberto Milian); and great-niece, Leila Hillifer, Vancouver; brother-in-law, Geoffrey Simmins (Joan); their sons, David and Michael, Calgary; sisters-in-law, Fiona Simmins and Jessica Simmins (Mark Flemming) and their sons, Graham and Alexander, Ottawa; and step-mother-in-law and friend, Karin Weiss (Peter Schimpf), Ottawa.

He also is survived by many wonderful Cameron and Robertson cousins and friends from coast to coast to coast and beyond.

After earning a Ph.D. from the University of London, Donald returned to Canada, where he became a distinguished educator at Dalhousie University, the University of New Brunswick and Cape Breton University, where he was the first Dean of the School of Community Studies.

In the late 1960s, Don embarked on a freelance career as a journalist, author, playwright and documentary filmmaker. He was a columnist for the Globe and Mail and wrote a weekly column for the Halifax Sunday Herald for 13 years. He gained a reputation for having wide interests and for supporting younger writers. As Margaret Atwood put it in an online tribute, “He was interested in a broad spectrum of things and a broad spectrum of people.”

His wide range of accomplishments was recognized in several notable awards: He was the recipient of the Order of Canada and the Order of Nova Scotia in 2012, as well as being awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal. He also received honorary doctorates from the University of King’s College and Cape Breton University and was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of Canada.

At the time of his death, Don was the Farley Mowat Chair in Environment at Cape Breton University. He was also Host and Executive Director of TheGreenInterview.com, a series of more than 100 in-depth conversations with the thinkers, artists and activists around the world whose ideas and work, he believed, are leading the way to a new era of sustainability. Working with Chris Beckett, his business partner and Green Interview Director, Cameron assembled this collection of interviews during 10 years of global travel and research.

Don was looking forward to the publication in August 2020 of his 20th book, Blood in the Water: A True Story of Revenge in the Maritimes (Penguin Random House). The book explores the layers of economic, cultural and human circumstances that led ordinary, law-abiding people to commit an extraordinary and brutal crime.

An online celebration of Silver Donald Cameron’s life will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. Atlantic time. It will be followed by a boisterous and loving in-person celebration of his life at his home village of D’Escousse when it is safe for all involved. Details of these events will be posted when available at http://www.silverdonaldcameron.ca/.

Donations in Silver Donald’s name may be made to the Woodcock Fund administered by the Writer’s Trust of Canada (https://www.writerstrust.com/), or to Symphony Nova Scotia (https://symphonynovascotia.ca/.

Grant Benvie

benvie, grant (2).jpg

Benvie, Grant The passing occurred on Monday, May 25th, 2020, of our father, Grant Benvie, at age 97 years, in Wynn Park Villa, Truro.

Dad was raised on a farm in Upper Stewiacke, one of 11 children of the late John William and Olivia Jane (Dean) Benvie. He lived 57 years in Brookfield where he and his wife raised their family, and spent the past 17 years in Truro.

We will remember him for his weedless gardens with their straight rows; his peas being among the first in the neighbourhood to raise their heads every spring; and summers filled with beautiful vegetables, rhubarb and berries. Every garden was a labour of love for our dad. He was a carpenter by trade and will be remembered for his strong work ethic and his fine woodworking skills. Once his career days were over he spent countless hours in his shop where he built furniture and grandfather clocks. His true passion was the making of over 80 violins which took him into his eightieth year. Mom and Dad so enjoyed the many people they met during those fiddle-making years, as someone was always dropping by to try out the latest one. Some of Dad’s fiddles were given to his children and grandchildren, producing a devoted fiddle-player in his granddaughter, Lyndsey. Other fiddles, each with their own story, have come back to family members in recent years to be played by them. We will remember him for his love of Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and cryptograms, and his ability to solve them faster than the rest of us put together.

Dad is survived by children, Graham (Ilonka Venier Alexander), Port Maitland; Leah (Craig) Hamilton, Allister (Jane), both of Upper Stewiacke; Kenneth, Melissa MacKenzie, both of Truro; Jim (Kathy), Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Allen, Bedford; sister-in-law, Violet Benvie, Saskatoon; numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Kea (Graham); siblings, Gussie (Donald) Burnett; Erma (Herb) Adamson; Edward (Lorraine); Lillian Benvie; James; Irene (Carl) Fleck; Margaret (Roy) Graham; Phyllis (Bernie) Hatt; Walter; brother-in-law, William Allen.

Special thanks to the staff of Wynn Park Villa who provided Dad’s care for the past six months.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no service and immediate family only at the graveside. A celebration to honour Dad’s life will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

She lived most of her life in East Jeddore with her loving husband of over 50 years, Everett.  She was a loving mother of Wayne (Lisa), Doug (partner Julie) and Angela.  Her greatest love was her grandchildren, Matthew, Evan, Tamara, Lexi, Trey and James.  Vera is also survived by her sister, Heather Baker (Gary); brother-in-law, Mansfield Hopkins; sister in-law, Roberta Dickison, who was her “special wine sister”; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Vera will be fondly remembered as a strong caring woman “sassy pants” who touched many lives.  At age 65, she retired from Northwood Homecare. She loved the clients she cared for, always putting others before herself.

As per her wishes there will be no service and burial will be at a later date.  Friends and family may celebrate Vera’s life with a donation to Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Robert Murray Russell

Russell, Robert Murray – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dear brother, Robert, at his Trout Lake fishing camp on May 6, 2020. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Earl and Catherine Russell.

A resident of Codroy Valley on the west coast of Newfoundland, he had been on a six month visit to Ship Harbour where he was able to enjoy time with friends and family, especially his Uncle Donnie Russell. After graduating from Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth, Robert joined the RCAF as a Vehicle Technician in 1966. Following various postings across Canada and in Germany, he retired from the Air Force in 1976 as a Master Corporal. He then worked for many years as a heavy duty truck mechanic at Parts for Trucks in Burnside until he retired in 2004.

As a young boy, Robert would sit for hours with his grandfather, Gibson Russell, listening to his tales about hunting and fishing. As he got older he would hunt for deer and fish for trout with his father, Earl, who passed along many of his skills. An avid sportsman, Robert’s life revolved around hunting and fishing. He moved to Newfoundland in 2004 after the rivers in Nova Scotia had been closed to salmon fishing. There he could walk to the river to do what he loved best, fly-fishing for salmon. He eventually became a licensed guide for both salmon fishing and moose hunting. Many would agree that he was among the best when it came to casting a line using a fly that he had tied himself. He could instinctively read a salmon pool and he would generously share his knowledge with fellow sportsmen.

Robert is survived by his sister, Elaine McWha (Larry), DeBaies Cove; Cathy Towers (Stu), Enfield; brother, Carl, Fredericton; brother-in-law, Doug Smith, Moncton; niece, Krista; and nephews, Joshua, David, Jesse, Andrew. Robert will always be remembered as a kind person and sadly missed by all who knew him.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Family will hold a celebration of his life after the Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted and it is safe to gather. We would sincerely like to thank Bill Coolen of Ship Harbour for everything that he did for us on Wednesday, May 6th. Donations in Robert’s memory can be made to the Atlantic Salmon Federation.

In her younger years, Joan worked at the Tasty Freeze and IGA, the Halifax Shipyards and in later years as an Avon Representative and then floral designer with her sister-in-law’s company, Silk Only. She took great pride in creating a loving home for her husband and children. She loved people and being involved with the Lawrencetown Community Centre, Calvin United Church, the Bunco Girls, the Red Hatters, the Porters Lake Seniors Club, the Texaco Oil Ladies Curling Bonspiel group and running the JJJ Canteen at the Westphal Horse Show.

Grammie, as she was affectionately called, was often heard saying to the children, “a little bird told me”, when they asked how she knew everything. A woman of many talents, Joan would refer to the many hats she wore to adapt to the circumstance at the time. She was a skilled cook, baker, seamstress, quilter and oil painter and loved photography, violin lessons and decorating for the holidays.

Mum and Dad had many wonderful times together: dressing as Mr. and Mrs. Claus to visit family, friends and hospital patients to bring the spirit of Christmas to life; going to dances; travelling; and spending time at the camp fishing, gardening and playing cards with family and friends. When reflecting on their times together, Dad said, “There wasn’t one day more special than the other. Every day was a good day.”

We wish to thank the VG Hematology Clinic staff, the incredible team of DGH physicians and staff as well as family and friends who supported us during these difficult months. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or charity of choice in Joan’s name.
