Donald Allan “Silver Donald” Cameron - June 1937 - June 1, 2020

With deep sadness we share that beloved Canadian author, environmentalist, communicator, activist and filmmaker Silver Donald Cameron passed away on June 1, 2020, in Halifax, from complications arising from lung cancer. His wife, Marjorie Simmins, was at his side. He was 82.

Born in Toronto and raised in Vancouver, Donald made a life in the Maritimes beginning in the 1960s, and in D'Escousse, Cape Breton, since 1971. He always said that when he came to the Maritimes, he knew he was home. He loved his sailing adventures in the Atlantic region and in the Bahamas and chronicled them in three different books. 

In addition to his wife Marjorie, he is survived by brothers, David Cameron (Stevie), Toronto; Ken Cameron (Angie Walkinshaw), Vancouver; nieces, Tassie Cameron (Daniel Wong); Amy Cameron (John Rowley); and Jen Cameron (Hossein Maleki), Vancouver; great-nieces, Sadie, Toronto; and Molly, Toronto; and great-nephew, Will.

Donald was predeceased in 1996 by his wife, Lulu Terrio-Cameron, mother of his youngest son, Mark Terrio-Cameron, Medicine Hat, Alberta. His large and loving Terrio family will miss him greatly.

He is survived by former wife, Catherine Ann Cameron and their children, Maxwell A. Cameron (Fabiola Bazo) and grandson, Gabriel Cameron Bazo, Vancouver; Ian Cameron (Vilma) and grandson, Tahj, Vancouver; Leslie Cameron (Temple Burling) and grandchildren, Aidan and Esme, Kenosha, Wisconsin; and Steven Cameron (Sandra), Hamilton and grandchildren, Nathan Lynde and Samantha Cameron, Alberton, Prince Edward Island.

Don was cherished by his Simmins family: sister-in-law, Zoë Landale (Garnet Coburn, deceased), Pender Island, BC; niece, Jocelyn Coburn (Alberto Milian); and great-niece, Leila Hillifer, Vancouver; brother-in-law, Geoffrey Simmins (Joan); their sons, David and Michael, Calgary; sisters-in-law, Fiona Simmins and Jessica Simmins (Mark Flemming) and their sons, Graham and Alexander, Ottawa; and step-mother-in-law and friend, Karin Weiss (Peter Schimpf), Ottawa.

He also is survived by many wonderful Cameron and Robertson cousins and friends from coast to coast to coast and beyond.

After earning a Ph.D. from the University of London, Donald returned to Canada, where he became a distinguished educator at Dalhousie University, the University of New Brunswick and Cape Breton University, where he was the first Dean of the School of Community Studies.

In the late 1960s, Don embarked on a freelance career as a journalist, author, playwright and documentary filmmaker. He was a columnist for the Globe and Mail and wrote a weekly column for the Halifax Sunday Herald for 13 years. He gained a reputation for having wide interests and for supporting younger writers. As Margaret Atwood put it in an online tribute, “He was interested in a broad spectrum of things and a broad spectrum of people.”

His wide range of accomplishments was recognized in several notable awards: He was the recipient of the Order of Canada and the Order of Nova Scotia in 2012, as well as being awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal. He also received honorary doctorates from the University of King’s College and Cape Breton University and was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of Canada.

At the time of his death, Don was the Farley Mowat Chair in Environment at Cape Breton University. He was also Host and Executive Director of TheGreenInterview.com, a series of more than 100 in-depth conversations with the thinkers, artists and activists around the world whose ideas and work, he believed, are leading the way to a new era of sustainability. Working with Chris Beckett, his business partner and Green Interview Director, Cameron assembled this collection of interviews during 10 years of global travel and research.

Don was looking forward to the publication in August 2020 of his 20th book, Blood in the Water: A True Story of Revenge in the Maritimes (Penguin Random House). The book explores the layers of economic, cultural and human circumstances that led ordinary, law-abiding people to commit an extraordinary and brutal crime. 

An online celebration of Silver Donald Cameron’s life will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. Atlantic time. It will be followed by a boisterous and loving in-person celebration of his life at his home village of D’Escousse when it is safe for all involved. Faye (Wilkes) Greenough

Greenough (Wilkes), Faye Phyllis – Age 87 of Musquodoboit Harbour passed away May 30, 2020 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital. Born in Mushaboom, she was a daughter of the late Reginald and Muriel Wilkes. Faye spent her adult life in Musquodoboit Harbour after meeting a very handsome gentleman, the late Bernard Stevens Greenough.

Faye is survived by her loving daughter, Muriel Burns (Gordon Julien); her grandchildren, Jolene Dempsey (Donnie MacDonald); April Burns and Kelsie Burns; her great-grandchildren, Braeden, Chloe, Jacob, Dawson, Kylie and Kassie. Faye was also blessed to have had the love and companionship of her siblings, Reginald (Glenda) Wilkes; Kenneth (Joan) Wilkes and Myrene (Tike) Thorne. She was predeceased by her sister, Millie (Max Young).

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

A graveside service will be held for immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Church, Musquodoboit Harbour or Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital. Special thanks to the staff of Twin Oaks for the many kindnesses they showed during the time of COVID-19.

Grant Benvie

Benvie, Grant – The passing occurred on Monday, May 25th, 2020, of our father, Grant Benvie, at age 97 years, in Wynn Park Villa, Truro.

Dad was raised on a farm in Upper Stewiacke, one of 11 children of the late John William and Olivia Jane (Dean) Benvie. He lived 57 years in Brookfield where he and his wife raised their family, and spent the past 17 years in Truro.

We will remember him for his weedless gardens with their straight rows; his peas being among the first in the neighbourhood to raise their heads every spring; and summers filled with beautiful vegetables, rhubarb and berries. Every garden was a labour of love for our dad. He was a carpenter by trade and will be remembered for his strong work ethic and his fine woodworking skills. Once his career days were over he spent countless hours in his shop where he built furniture and grandfather clocks. His true passion was the making of over 80 violins which took him into his eightieth year. Mom and Dad so enjoyed the many people they met during those fiddle-making years, as someone was always dropping by to try out the latest one. Some of Dad’s fiddles were given to his children and grandchildren, producing a devoted fiddle-player in his granddaughter, Lyndsey. Other fiddles, each with their own story, have come back to family members in recent years to be played by them. We will remember him for his love of Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and cryptograms, and his ability to solve them faster than the rest of us put together.

Dad is survived by children, Graham (Ilonka Venier Alexander), Port Maitland; Leah (Craig) Hamilton, Allister (Jane), both of Upper Stewiacke; Kenneth, Melissa MacKenzie, both of Truro; Jim (Kathy), Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Allen, Bedford; sister-in-law, Violet Benvie, Saskatoon; numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Kea (Graham); siblings, Gussie (Donald) Burnett; Erma (Herb) Adamson; Edward (Lorraine); Lillian Benvie; James; Irene (Carl) Fleck; Margaret (Roy) Graham; Phyllis (Bernie) Hatt; Walter; brother-in-law, William Allen.

Special thanks to the staff of Wynn Park Villa who provided Dad’s care for the past six months.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no service and immediate family only at the graveside. A celebration to honour Dad’s life will be held at a later date.

Michael Stewart Hilton

Hilton, Michael Stewart – Age 73, of Shubenacadie, passed away on May 23, 2020 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, after a long battle with cancer. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late John and Vivian Hilton.

Mike worked for C.N. Railway for 26 years. Following that, he worked for several trucking companies and loved trucking to Newfoundland.

Surviving are his wife, Irene (Gilby); son, Keith (Kim), Shubenacadie; daughter, Vicky (Shane), Salem Cross Road; grandchildren, Cole, Jacob and Josie; sister, Corinne (Victor) Arsenault, London, Ontario. He was predeceased by brother, Kenneth; sisters, Marion and Cheryl.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

In keeping with Mike’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service.

Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Ruby Diane (Mosher) Dahr

Dahr (Mosher), Ruby Diane - It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the peaceful passing of Ruby on May 19, 2020 at age 78 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour.  She was a cancer survivor and fought a brave and stoic battle against macular degeneration and heart disease.

Ruby was born in Musquodoboit Harbour a daughter of the late Cameron and Hazel (Bond) Mosher.  Her family moved to Upper Musquodoboit where Ruby grew up and attended Henry School and Musquodoboit Rural High School.  In her early years she worked for Zellers in Truro and later with Maritime Tel and Tel.  After she married the love of her life, Arthur, they moved to Mooseland where they raised their three girls.  After the girls grew up, Ruby went to work for Nova Trucking Ltd. as a bookkeeper for twenty years.

Ruby was a very community oriented person and very active in supporting her community over the years.  She was a former member of the St. Thomas ACW, the Mooseland Fire Hall, and the Mooseland Community Association.

Ruby is survived by her husband, Arthur; daughters, Wanda (Boyd Prest), Sherry (Dwayne Murphy) and Tanya (Brian Bowser); grandchildren, Jonathan Murphy (Britney), Katelyn Murphy and Logan Bowser; great-grandchildren, Isabelle Murphy and Zachery Murphy.  She is also survived by brothers, Weldon Mosher and Roy Mosher; and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Ruby was predeceased by brother, Kenneth (Eileen) Mosher; sister, Marion (Vaughn) Kindervater; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Mosher and Maxine Mosher; and nephew, Anthony Mosher.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, especially Dr. Karl Tenneson and Dr. Rob Merritt and all the nurses who cared for Mom as their own. They would also like to thank the community of Mooseland who were there when Mom called. Special thanks to Ruby’s dear friend, Marilyn Prest who was only a phone call away and a tremendous support through all of Ruby’s illnesses.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic there will be no funeral.  Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. There will be a family burial at a later date in St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery, Musquodoboit Harbour.

Memorial donations may be made to the NS Heart and Stroke Foundation, the NS Cancer Society, CNIB, or your choice of charity.

William "Bill" Hazen Parker

Parker, William “Bill” Hazen - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Bill Parker, age 94, at Parkstone Enhanced Care Facility in Halifax on May 15, 2020.  He was a son of the late William Alexander “Sandy” and Wilena “Connie” (O’Connor) Parker.  Born in Trois Rivieres, QC, in 1926, Bill moved with his family back to Nova Scotia in 1932. 

He grew up in Halifax and went to work at HMCS Dockyard during World War II.  He began his career as a printer with the Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation in Halifax and then was employed at the Queen’s Printer (Government Printing Bureau) where he worked as a photoengraver for 37 years, retiring in 1984. 

Bill was active with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for many years and served many roles with that organization.  He was a cub leader for a number of years with the 1st Woodlawn Group in Dartmouth.  He was a member of Woodlawn United Church and was well known for the many hours he spent in the church kitchen helping out at suppers and receptions. Bill lived with his family on Oakwood Avenue in Dartmouth for 51 years until he moved to Parklands by The Lake in 2010. He has been a resident at Parkstone since 2018.

Bill is survived by his sons, Roy (Sharon), Halifax; Don (Mary Ann), Middle Musquodoboit and Ian (Mavis Hicks), Halifax; his sister, Anne Miller, Toronto; brothers, Bob (Phyllis), New Glasgow and David (Barb), Dartmouth; granddaughters, Jennifer (Paul Dandurand), Halifax; Joanne (Greg Boudreau), Halifax and Christine Marsh (Chris Murray), Dartmouth, and great-grandchildren, Claire, Audrey and Felix.  He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Ruby (Blades) in 1994 and his sister, Blanche in 1946.

The family would like to thank the staff of Parkstone for the excellent care they provided to Bill during his time there.

Cremation has taken place.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.  Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to The Dartmouth East Christian Foodbank Association or a charity of your choice.

Robert "Bob" Langille

Langille, Robert “Bob” - It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Robert “Bob” Langille, 80, of Truro on Friday, May 15, 2020. Born in Truro, he was the son of the late John and Freda Langille.

He is survived by his children, Kathy (Karen Mills), Truro; Bobby (Joan), Tatamagouche; Michelle (Tony) Richards, Onslow; grandchildren, John (Barya) Kimber, Alberta; Adam (Rhian) Langille, British Columbia; and Holly (Chris) Isnor, PEI; great-grandchildren, Soraya, Brin, Lucas and Jade; his special companion, Gail Snair, Truro; and siblings, Diane Lindsay (Bob Standing), Truro; Claudia Cavanaugh (Erven Trefry), Truro; and John (Eleanor) Langille, Brookside.

Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Evangeline “Vangie” and sister, Carol Ann Johnson.

Bob was loving father and cared deeply about family.  He was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan.  Bob had a big heart and was always the first to lend a helping hand.  He enjoyed bowling, watching Truro Bearcats games, loved all sports and had a special love for animals, especially his fur companion, Maggie.

Bob enjoyed the 10 years he and Vangie wintered in Florida, spending much of his time playing horseshoes and proudly displaying all the trophies he won.  Bob spent his summers camping at Sunset Watch in Brule.  He was a hard worker and took great pride in making sure the grounds there were kept in tip top shape and worked diligently to keep all the mowers running smoothly.

The family will hold a celebration of life after the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted and it is safe to gather.  

Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the SPCA.

Wilfred Sterling Fleet

Fleet, Wilfred Sterling – Age 84 of Halifax, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2020 in Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Grand Manan, NB, he was a son of the late Evelyn (Fleet) Green.

Wilfred was a bus driver for Metro Transit for 26 years. He then worked as a school crossing guard for HRM for 23 years. He will be remembered as a very kind man who loved animals.

He is survived by his daughters, Tanya and Alice; son, Russell; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Louise Anne; children, Sonny and Elizabeth.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Due to restrictions from Covid-19 there will be no funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Murray David Holman

Holman, Murray David – Age 68, of Halifax and formerly of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away May 14, 2020, in Northwood Manor due to complications from Covid-19. Born in Middle Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Earl and Katherine “Kay”  Holman.

Murray owned and operated Holman’s Restaurant in Upper Musquodoboit for a number of years. Before getting into the restaurant business, he worked as a meat cutter in Dan MacLeod’s store. Murray was an easy-going person who enjoyed being around people and always had a smile on his face and a story to tell.

Surviving are his brother, Randy (Judy); nephew, Morgan; niece, Lindsay; one great-niece and one great-nephew.

Cremation has taken place.

A private graveside service will be held in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit.

Vera "Sis" Noreen Hopkins

Hopkins, Vera Noreen “Sis” – It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Vera Noreen Hopkins, age 71, in Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on May 13, 2020.  Vera was born in Halifax, a daughter of the late John and Iona Jennex. 

She lived most of her life in East Jeddore with her loving husband of over 50 years, Everett.  She was a loving mother of Wayne (Lisa), Doug (partner Julie) and Angela.  Her greatest love was her grandchildren, Matthew, Evan, Tamara, Lexi, Trey and James.  Vera is also survived by her sister, Heather Baker (Gary); brother-in-law, Mansfield Hopkins; sister in-law, Roberta Dickison, who was her “special wine sister”; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Vera will be fondly remembered as a strong caring woman “sassy pants” who touched many lives.  At age 65, she retired from Northwood Homecare. She loved the clients she cared for, always putting others before herself. 

As per her wishes there will be no service and burial will be at a later date.  Friends and family may celebrate Vera’s life with a donation to Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Robert Murray Russell

Russell, Robert Murray – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dear brother, Robert, at his Trout Lake fishing camp on May 6, 2020. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Earl and Catherine Russell.

A resident of Codroy Valley on the west coast of Newfoundland, he had been on a six month visit to Ship Harbour where he was able to enjoy time with friends and family, especially his Uncle Donnie Russell. After graduating from Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth, Robert joined the RCAF as a Vehicle Technician in 1966. Following various postings across Canada and in Germany, he retired from the Air Force in 1976 as a Master Corporal. He then worked for many years as a heavy duty truck mechanic at Parts for Trucks in Burnside until he retired in 2004.

As a young boy, Robert would sit for hours with his grandfather, Gibson Russell, listening to his tales about hunting and fishing. As he got older he would hunt for deer and fish for trout with his father, Earl, who passed along many of his skills. An avid sportsman, Robert’s life revolved around hunting and fishing. He moved to Newfoundland in 2004 after the rivers in Nova Scotia had been closed to salmon fishing. There he could walk to the river to do what he loved best, fly-fishing for salmon. He eventually became a licensed guide for both salmon fishing and moose hunting. Many would agree that he was among the best when it came to casting a line using a fly that he had tied himself. He could instinctively read a salmon pool and he would generously share his knowledge with fellow sportsmen.

Robert is survived by his sister, Elaine McWha (Larry), DeBaies Cove; Cathy Towers (Stu), Enfield; brother, Carl, Fredericton; brother-in-law, Doug Smith, Moncton; niece, Krista; and nephews, Joshua, David, Jesse, Andrew. Robert will always be remembered as a kind person and sadly missed by all who knew him.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Family will hold a celebration of his life after the Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted and it is safe to gather. Christopher G. Martelle CPO1 (Retired)

Martelle, Christopher G. CPO1 (Retired) – Beloved husband and soulmate of Susan, died suddenly at home on May 3, 2020. He was a son of the late Mary (Loader) and Joseph Martelle.

Besides his wife, he is survived by daughter, Megan (Kevin); son, Liam; stepson Matthew Lang (Heather); step grandchildren, Brea and Emerson; sister, Rose Martelle (Ed Bangay); brothers, Michael, Dwayne (Susan).

Chris was in the Canadian Navy for 27 years, retiring as the 1st Coxswain of the St. John’s. He then worked for Goodspeeds Manufacturing until retiring, then worked with Susan in the antique business.

Vera Maxine (McKenna) Davison

Davison (McKenna), Vera Maxine - Age 77 of Lantz, left this earth to be with her Saviour on 28th of April 2020. Born 1942 in Lantz, Vera was a child of the late Clarence and Aileen (Paley) McKenna. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years William “Bill” Davison. She was “Mum” to her son, Ronnie and daughter, Nancy (Chris Tapper) Smith, “Gram“ to Andrew and Katie Smith and Carly Davison, and “ Grammie-Great” to Jaxson, Bella and Easton Smith and Ky and Khloe Davison.

Vera is survived by siblings, Pat Moore, Linda Bowman, Kenny (Patty), John (Jan) Mckenna and brother–in–law Otakar Bartulik. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Elizabeth Joy Bartulik, brothers–in–law, Albert Moore, Gary Bowman and son-in-law Peter Smith.

Vera was Post Mistress in Lantz for many years and in her spare time could be found working in her wonderful flower gardens or quilting.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Corporative, Upper Musquodoboit. At her request there will be no visitation, only a graveside service at St. George’s Cemetery at a future date.

Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice in memory of Vera.

Joan Patricia Eisener

Eisener, Joan Patricia – With great sadness, we announce that our real life Superwoman, Joan Patricia Eisener (nee Leslie), East Chezzetcook, formerly of West Lawrencetown passed away on April 21, 2020. She received her Angel Wings at age 77 in the DGH after a courageous battle with non-hodgkins lymphoma. Born in Halifax, Joan spent her school years in Halifax and Dartmouth.

Joan is survived by her soul mate, best friend and husband of 58 years, Robert; beloved daughters, Krista and Karla; sons-in-law, Curtis LeBlanc and Ian Gaetz. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Mackenzie (Carrie), Lauryn (James), Lindsay (John), Michaela (Derek), Sophia, Samuel, Lyle and great grandchildren, Vincent, Violet, Nellie and Noah. Lovingly remembered by siblings, Eric (Brenda) Leslie, Judith (Peter) Snair, Jean Leslie Fader, Logan (Emily) Leslie, Kathryn Snow (Al Giles) and Caroline Leslie as well as in-laws, Lloyd, Kenneth (Heather), Margaret, Barbara, Pauline (Eric), Sandra (Eldon) and Angela; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by parents, Eric and Prudence (who personally delivered the angel wings herself); infant brother, Raymond; sister-in-law, Bunnie; brothers-in-law, Graham, Terry, Donnie and Danny.

In her younger years, Joan worked at the Tasty Freeze and IGA, the Halifax Shipyards and in later years as an Avon Representative and then floral designer with her sister-in-law’s company, Silk Only. She took great pride in creating a loving home for her husband and children. She loved people and being involved with the Lawrencetown Community Centre, Calvin United Church, the Bunco Girls, the Red Hatters, the Porters Lake Seniors Club, the Texaco Oil Ladies Curling Bonspiel group and running the JJJ Canteen at the Westphal Horse Show.

Grammie, as she was affectionately called, was often heard saying to the children, “a little bird told me”, when they asked how she knew everything. A woman of many talents, Joan would refer to the many hats she wore to adapt to the circumstance at the time. She was a skilled cook, baker, seamstress, quilter and oil painter and loved photography, violin lessons and decorating for the holidays.

Mum and Dad had many wonderful times together: dressing as Mr. and Mrs. Claus to visit family, friends and hospital patients to bring the spirit of Christmas to life; going to dances; travelling; and spending time at the camp fishing, gardening and playing cards with family and friends. When reflecting on their times together, Dad said, “There wasn’t one day more special than the other. Every day was a good day.”

We wish to thank the VG Hematology Clinic staff, the incredible team of DGH physicians and staff as well as family and friends who supported us during these difficult months. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or charity of choice in Joan’s name.

Mary “Geraldine” Boutilier

Boutilier, Mary “Geraldine” – Age 89, of Stewiacke. We regret to announce the passing of Geraldine in Elk Court, Brookfield, on April 20, 2020. She was the youngest child of the late Norman and Mary (Samson) Slaunwhite.

Geraldine was an avid knitter, and loved to read and play bingo.

Surviving are her sons, Larry (Marilyn), Alan (Debbie); sister, Marie; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Vernon; son, Bruce; brother, Gordon.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.

Sharon Elizabeth Murphy

Murphy, Sharon Elizabeth – Age 71 of Truro, passed away April 20, 2020 at her daughter, Krista’s home in Beaver Bank. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Eva (Hinton) Lake.

Sharon was a long-time employee of MacQuarrie’s Pharmasave in Truro. She loved going to yard sales and her grandchildren were the light of her life.

Surviving are daughters, Krista Patriquin (Jason Foote), Beaver Bank; Lynn Murphy, Truro; grandchildren, Ayden Murphy (Matthew Zolkivski), Oliver Patriquin, Jacob Murphy; special daughter, Heidi Kerr, Middle Musquodoboit; brothers, Rod (Vivien) Lake, Timberlea; Bruce (Pauline) Lake, Brookfield.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Memorial donations may be made to Boston Terrier Rescue of Canada.

Elma Mary (Rutherford) Dickie

Dickie (Rutherford), Elma Mary – age 94, passed away peacefully in Debert Court on April 20, 2020. She was a daughter of Willis and Della (Matheson) Rutherford and was born and raised in Newton Mills.

As a young woman, she attended Success Business College in Truro and worked for some time in Toronto.  Following her marriage to Neil Dickie, she spent her married life in Eastville. She resumed her education at South Colchester High School as an adult student and continued on to attain her teaching certification at Nova Scotia Teachers College.  She taught in Middle Stewiacke Elementary School until retirement.  Elma was an active member of Springside United Church, and when she moved to Bible Hill following Neil's death she joined St. David's United Church and was a member of the UCW in both congregations.  She enjoyed time spent volunteering with the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society & Museum. 

She is survived by her sisters, Marg Rhodes, California and Laura (Jim) Shea, Dartmouth; daughter, Karen (Steve) Miller, Middle Musquodoboit; grandsons Craig (Danielle), Oxford; Sheldon (Deanna), Cole Harbour; great-grandchildren Sara, Addison and Sam; as well as several nieces, nephews and their families. Besides her parents and husband, Elma was predeceased by her brother, Robert Rutherford, Newton Mills; sister, Lillian MacKenzie, Westville; brothers-in-law, John MacKenzie and Bill Rhodes; special friend, Walter Perrin; nephew, Lorne Dickie; niece, Hazel Dickie and all of Neil's siblings and their spouses.

A big thank you to the staff of Debert Court and Today’s Nurse for their care and kindness to Elma during these difficult times.

Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit and a graveside service in Eastville Cemetery will be held at a later date.  Memorial donations may be made to Eastville Cemetery, Stewiacke Valley Historical Society/Museum or any charity.

Michael David Moore

Moore, Michael David– Age 63, of Tufts Cove passed away suddenly on April 18th, 2020.

He is survived by his loving wife and soulmate of 32 years Bridgid Bowers, daughters Jodi Cameron (RC) and Brenda Beauchamp (Matt Ghiz) and son Michael Beauchamp. Granddaughters Baleigh (Jacob), Brooklyn (Ryan) and great grandson Wyatt Alexander. He was recently predeceased by his granddaughter and buddy Bria.

He is also survived by his son Shawn Mabie (Erin) and grandsons Zackary and Cody, and his sibling Darlene Moore (Jim).

He is survived by his special Uncle Kenny, cousin Tom and family and the Boys in Brampton, Ontario. As well as many other family members, in-laws and cousins whom he loved dearly.

He was predeceased by his father Lloyd Moore, mother Vera Keating, sister Karen Moore and brother Pat Moore.

He has many friends and family members who have shared so many special times over the years especially down in Little Harbour, his happy place, namely his cousins (brothers) Grant and Seldon. Papa Mike loved fishing especially with his grandchildren, cooking lobsters, washer toss, fireworks and hitting golf balls across the crick.

Mumpy as he was known to many friends and family over the years was a mechanic for 40 plus years and most recently working at Cheapy Tire.

Some of his favorite things were darts in the garage, Alexander Keith’s, cooking chicken wings and bonfires with the Tidewater Lane Boys and their Annual bike trips with the Keatings and friends as well as his many longtime friends from the North End.

Papa loved feeding Wyatt ice cream with the maple syrup that he enjoyed making with his buddy Gord. He always had the radio on and loved Johnny Cash.

Recently, he was able to enjoy a trip to Mexico where he had a fish pedicure and celebrated their honeymoon (inside joke).

Papa and Bria are now dancing together to Remember When in Heaven. While we wish they were still here, we know that they needed each other.

Cremation has taken place and due to Covid-19 a Celebration of life will be held when permitted.

Robert “Bob” Gerald MacDonald

MacDonald, Robert “Bob” Gerald – Age 83, of Riverside, Colchester County, passed away suddenly at home on April 17, 2020.

Bob and his wife Sandra owned and operated the Stedman’s store in Shubenacadie for 26 years. He and his family enjoyed many years of camping at Five Islands where they made numerous lasting friendships.

Surviving are his wife, Sandra (Longden); daughter, Kelly (Mario); son, Mark (Joanne); grandchildren, Heidi and Brandon; extended family, Pam, Joe, Kendal and Landon; special sisters-in-law, Lorene and Diane and their families in Ontario. He will also be greatly missed by his grandbabies, Roofus and Reno.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. In keeping with Bob’s wishes there will be no funeral. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Winston Musgrave

Musgrave, Winston – Our family is broken hearted at the passing of a husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all on April 16, 2020.

Winston Musgrave, 78, has begun his journey to join his first wife Carolyn in eternity.   He frequently said about his life, “I was blessed to have loved two wonderful women”. 

Winston spent 21 years employed with Sydney Steel Co as an electrician and with the NS Government as Emergency Measures Zone Controller (Cape Breton) for 21 more years up until his retirement.  He was a passionate hunter and fisherman and loved being in the woods or on the water.  He was an example of someone who wholeheartedly gave back to community volunteering with Cape Breton Ground Search and Rescue, Crime Stoppers, Christopher Leadership and the Order of St. John Ambulance serving as Area Commissioner and Provincial Commissioner until being Knighted in 1996 for his numerous years of service.  For many years, he was a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at St. Anthony Daniel Parish in Sydney.  After his retirement, Winston discovered the joys of carving and became an accomplished wood carver with the Truro Carving Club winning many ribbons and awards. 

He leaves behind his incredible wife who gave him so much love and happiness, Doris “Doll” (Hinch) Musgrave;  his beloved children, daughter Patty Musgrave Quinn (Len) and son Paul Musgrave (Sue) and step-children who were so important to him, Reg Hinch (Jane), Darlene Hinch (Walter), Brian Hinch and Angie Horne (Ross) and the grandchildren that he was so very proud of, Joshua, Lucas, Nicholas, Rebecca, Leah, Jay, Blaze, Jessica and Cody and ten perfect great-grandchildren.  His love made us all family.

Winston was a remarkable brother to his sisters whom he loved dearly and shared many special memories with; Beverley Musgrave, Heather Lockhart (Jim), Lyd MacDonald (David), and Anne Bruce (Mike) and six nieces and nephews.

His first wife and best friend of 34 years, Carolyn (Hardy) Musgrave predeceased him in 1997 and remained so very important to him.  We know she has come to guide him home along with his grandson Samuel, his treasured parents Fred and Belle Musgrave and his sister Patricia; he is now reunited with his loved ones in Heaven and we can only imagine him saying “Here I am Lord”.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.  Funeral mass will be held at a later date at Immaculate Conception Church in Truro; burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Sydney beside his wife, Carolyn.

We wish to thank Dr. Henderson and Lisa Weatherbee of Palliative Care as well as the VON nurses in the Truro area for your kindness to Winston.

Doris, you gave him so many years of joy and laughter and kept him at home where he was cared for and comfortable.  We love you and could “never have asked for a finer woman”, to borrow a phrase from Dad.  Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts to his special buddy Brian and to Angie for making sure he was never alone.
