Jeffrey Raymond “Jeff” Olson

Olson, Jeffrey Raymond “Jeff” – Age 59 of Ship Harbour, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2019 after battling melanoma. He was born in Winnipeg, MB and moved to Ship Harbour in the mid-1980s with his young family, where he remained ever since.

He was loved by his wife and partner of 41 years, Margaret Ann (Gerrior); daughters, Jennifer (Paul Jennex), Oyster Pond; Jody (Josh) DeBaie, East Jeddore; and Kimberly, St.John’s, NL. He will not be forgotten by his two favourite people, granddaughters, Rory Jennex and Chloe DeBaie. Rory and Chloe will tell his third granddaughter, four-month-old Abigail DeBaie all about Grandpa and his silly ways. He is also survived by his mother, Iris (Jefferies) Olson, Sandy Hook, MB; brother, Rodney (Jackie), Selkirk, MB; and sister, Heather Streilein, Winnipeg, MB. He will be missed by his extended family from Maryvale, NS and Manitoba, as well as several friends he considered family. Elvis and Angus (his furry family) will notice his absence. He was predeceased by his father, Vernon (Sandy Hook); brother, Richard in infancy, and parents-in-law, Theresa and Billy Gerrior (Maryvale).

Jeff was a self-made man, leaving home as a teenager, on a motorcycle with only a backpack, to start his adult life in Edmonton. He was a proud member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, Local 409. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, being in the woods caring for his 44 acres and pruning the family Christmas trees, puttering in his garage, motorcycles, and deer hunting. His favourite thing to do was spend time in his little gulley in Ship Harbour with his family, over a lovely meal prepared by his wife. He was a fighter, and he fought right till the end.

We would like to thank all of the family, friends, and healthcare workers who have shown us support over the last two years. We would like to recognize Joanne McKee for providing outstanding care to Jeff during his illness, as well as Dr. Alana Cormier, Brett Sinclair, and Tracey Bonang for the exceptional compassion and care that they have provided our husband/father and family during his hospital stay at Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. There will be a gathering on Tuesday, July 30th from 1-3 p.m. in the Ship Harbour Community Hall, 214 West Ship Harbour Rd. George “Carleton” MacLean

MacLean, George “Carleton” – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Grampy, George "Carleton" MacLean on Wednesday, July 24, 2019. Following a brief illness, Grampy passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones in Dartmouth General Hospital ICU. Carleton was born in Florence, Cape Breton on December 3, 1932, to the late Robert and Christena (MacNeil) MacLean.

Growing up in Cape Breton, Carleton then relocated to mainland Nova Scotia with the love of his life, Madonna. They eventually settled in Gaetz Brook where they raised 13 incredible children. After retiring from a career as an Engineer with the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Carleton and Madonna established “Carleton MacLean Trucking”, where they worked side by side for many years. Following this, Grampy could be found in his happy place, outside – either on their island or tinkering, towing, collecting and fixing anything and everything. Grampy will be remembered by his family and friends as someone who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.

Carleton is survived by his loving wife, Madonna (Devoe); his children, Lorna, Buddy (Bonnie), David, Allen, Curtis (Diane), Norine (Vernon), Lindy (Terry), Brian, Robin (Lavare), Dennis and Roy; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the light of his days; his sisters, Christena (Emerson) and Sylvia (Bill); brother-in-law, Leighton (Beryl); sister-in-law, Opal (Max). He was predeceased by son, Christopher; daughter, Wanda (Ronnie); daughter-in-law, Donna (David); brothers, Gus, Donnie (Edith), Max, Kenneth (Sandy); sisters, Christena, Robina (Joe), Marguerite (Frank), Lorna (Roy), Hecterina and Beryl.

The family would like to extend our greatest thanks to the staff of Dartmouth General Hospital ICU for their excellent care, as well to family and friends for their support over the last few weeks.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. There will be a gathering for family and friends to honour our incredible "Grampy" on Thursday, August 1st from 5-8 p.m. in First United Church Hall, Musquodoboit Harbour. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Twin Oaks/The Birches Health Care Charitable Foundation. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Douglas Levaine Cameron

Cameron, Douglas Levaine – Doug passed away on July 22, 2019 in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro, at the age of 81. He was born in Apple River to parents J.W. Cameron and Hilda (Orr) Cameron.

Doug suffered from seizures as a young child, resulting in his inability to speak. This didn’t hamper Doug from letting his wishes be known by whistling and pointing. He was strong and adamant in what he wanted, especially if there were date squares or cheesies involved. Doug experienced the special attention and love that only a mother could provide. In his later years, he was fortunate to receive excellent care from the staff of Maplewood Manor, Tatamagouche and since 2013, from the staff of Purdy Lane in Cedarstone, Truro.

Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by brothers, Allison and Leland. He is survived by siblings, Larry (Ardith), Bible Hill; Curtis (Margie), Truro; Doreen (Bruce) Woodworth, Wolfville; Carson (Donna MacKinnon), Warwick Mountain; and Bob (Wendy), Tatamagouche; sisters-in-law, Nance Cameron, Trenton, Ont.; and Dawn Cameron, Abbotsford, B.C.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A private family interment will be held in The Falls Cemetery, The Falls.

Wilhelmina Paula (Fransen) Polstra

Polstra (Fransen), Wilhelmina Paula – Age 78, passed away peacefully in Northwood Centre, Halifax on July 18th, 2019. Born in Garut, Indonesia, Wilhelmina was the daughter of the late Berend-Jan and Hertha Fransen.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hans Polstra; and brother, Gerrit-Jan Fransen (Winterswyk, Holland).

Wilhelmina came to Canada on October 19th, 1963, where she joined her husband who had already been to Canada as a young farm hand. She was a nurse for many years and truly enjoyed her profession. Wilhelmina was an avid gardener, who loved nothing more than digging in the dirt and watching her beautiful gardens grow. She was a talented and accomplished seamstress who sewed beautiful clothing for herself, family, and even created costumes for many years for local dancers and dance schools. She loved to entertain friends and family with meals and gatherings for every occasion. Her motto and advice in life was, “Don’t sweat the small stuff” and “Accept the things you cannot change and have the courage to change the things you can, and have the wisdom to learn the difference.”

She is survived by her son, Bob (Sherri); daughter, Julie Polstra (Dave); Tjiske Polstra (Myles); grandsons, Kees Polstra, Ben Polstra, Ethan Caldwell, Owen Caldwell; brother, Ben Fransen (Margarethe) of Munich, Germany; sister-in-law, Wilma Fransen of Winterswyk, Holland; several cousins, nieces and nephews abroad.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Enfield Legion on Thursday, July 25th from 6-8 p.m. Family invites friends to come together and remember the good times they had with Wilhelmina. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the staff of Centre 3 at Northwood for their care and compassion during Wilhelmina’s final days.

Donald Gordon Saunders

Saunders, Donald Gordon – Age 85 of Musquodoboit Harbour, passed away July 12, 2019 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital.

Donny worked on the waterfront in Halifax as a stevedore for many years. He enjoyed fishing with Peter and Tammy, and walking the beach with his dogs. He was a kind and generous man who was loved by all.

Surviving are his son, Peter (Tammy); granddaughter, April (Jamie) MacQuarrie; great-granddaughter, Madison; and a great-grandchild on the way; “granddaughter”, Kayla. He was predeceased by his wife, Laura “Judy”; brothers, Jack, Roy, Paul; and sister, Marg.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Alexander “Harry” (The Bodine) Jardine

Jardine, Alexander “Harry” (The Bodine) – Age 81, of Dean, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on July 10, 2019, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Eureka, he was a son of the late David and Louise (Carroll) Jardine.

Harry had been a private in the Canadian army from 1956 to 1965, and later became a pipefitter. He was a member of UA Local 244 Plumbers and Pipefitters, and Boilermakers Lodge 73. He was renowned for his skills across Canada. He was a member of Freemasons Elm Lodge 115, Upper Stewiacke. Harry was passionate about his pets, his family, and his friends.

Surviving are his wife, Judy; his children, Wendy Davidson, Steven (Bonny) Jardine, Shari (Henry McInnis), Roslyn (John Majcan), Craig (Kelli) Jardine; grandchildren, Tamara (Pat) Meade, Taryn (Dhani) McAlduff, Brandon (MJ) McInnis, Jerrod (Laura) McInnis,  Mitchell (Kayleigh) McInnis, Rachel Majcan (Colt Nolan), Joshua Majcan, Jacob (Megan) Majcan, Sarah Jardine, Matthew Jardine; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn McAlduff, Brixton McAlduff, Violet Davidson, Charlie Meade, Easton Jardine; stepchildren, Teresa Cox, Tammy (Andy) Wright, Rick Cox (Stacey Kaiser); step-grandchildren, Tiffany, Bailey, Brendon, Bella. He was predeceased by siblings, Laurie, Marion, Clifford, Rita.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean, with Calvin Burt student minister officiating. Burial will follow in Dean Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a local SPCA.

Phoebe Willow Tate

Tate, Phoebe Willow – The friends and family of Phoebe Willow Tate are broken-hearted to announce her passing at age 13. Phoebe, of Musquodoboit Harbour, passed away peacefully at home on July 9th, 2019 with her Mom and Dad at her side. Phoebe fought a courageous battle against early onset Juvenile Huntington’s disease.

JHD is a monster disease but Phoebe did not let the disease define who she was. Phoebe loved animals, including stuffies, but especially horses and seemed to have an incredible connection with them. She connected easily with people, even those she only met briefly or even not at all. She had a beautiful spirit that was so kind-hearted and yet mischievous at the same time. She loved to hug and so many people had the pleasure of feeling how great her hugs were.

She was always a great traveler and enjoyed her many trips to River John to see her family there and her road trips through the Black Hills and the Rockies. She travelled to the Black Hills of South Dakota to see wild mustangs, and her Mom and Richard will always have those incredible memories. She flew to England with her Dad and spent an amazing three weeks with her family there where she went on a safari, enjoyed an outdoor play, horseback riding and loved the sting rays at the aquarium. She spent time in Alberta attending Stampede, visiting several ranches, and enjoying time with her family there. Our visit to the see the Gypsy Vanners was incredible, where we had a bbq with the loving Hickey family and ended up on a float in a parade in Rimbey. At the Guhle Thoroughbred Ranch, she stole the heart of Mayday Maria; a normally standoffish horse who spent a half hour communing with Phoebe. That event will be ingrained in her Mom’s heart forever. She visited BC where she camped, whale watched and was enthralled with the baby goats thinking her wheelchair was something to eat and Phoebe was a rock to climb on. She flew to Give Kids The World Village to spend a week exploring Disney and what an incredible memory for all of us to see her so engaged and smiling at Anna and Elsa when she met them. She also got to see the HRP horses at their Stables.

We always referred to Phoebe as being on a journey, and we are so proud to say that she was never alone on that journey. The MacDonald family provided immense support that was a source of inspiration as a model of unselfish community assistance. A special thank you to the people of the Eastern Shore who helped us navigate the many hurdles in our journey and to our friends at Big Al’s and the surrounding communities who rallied together to support Phoebe.

A special mention for her friends at her beloved school Porter’s Lake Elementary, she adored each and every one of you as you continued to surround her with love and support throughout her decline. The teachers and staff at PLES were a huge part of Phoebe’s life and we will never forget you for all you did for her. The care and support provided by the entire team at the IWK was exquisite. A special thank you to the nurses and doctors in PMU, MSNU and ICU. We are so very fortunate to have such an incredible facility in our province for our children. Joe, Ellen, Elaine, Stacie, Shauna, Jordon and Katherine, each of you will always have a special place in our hearts for the incredible support you have provided Phoebe, and to her Mom and Dad through what was singularly the hardest journey anyone should ever have to make with their child. Thank you to the RCMP and EMTs of Musquodoboit Harbour and to Heather, Vickie, Michelle and Brittany from continuing care and our private LPN, April. To Marcy, Susan, Michelle and all the many homecare workers at Northwood we thank you for everything you did to help Phoebe feel more comfortable. To our dear friends Brenda and Laura, and Nannie and Grandolf, thank you for always being there.

Phoebe is survived by her dad, Andrew; her mom, Annette; and pseudo-dad, Richard. She will be missed by her maternal grandparents, Sharon and Ronnie “Grandolf” Heighton; her paternal grandmother, Gillian Tate; her aunt, Stephanie (Neil) Annis-Tate; and by all of her great aunts, uncles and many cousins. She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Michael Tate; and uncle, Paul Tate.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. There will be Celebrations of Life for Phoebe on Sunday, July 14th from 1-3 p.m. at 327 East Petpeswick Rd., Musquodoboit Harbour, and from 6-8 p.m. in St. John’s Anglican Church hall, 1919 Hwy. 6, River John. Funeral service will be on Monday, July 15th at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Anglican Church, River John, followed by a reception in the Church hall. At each service people may bring a rock of any kind for Phoebe’s cairn, so Phoebe may rest surrounded by the love of those who knew her. George Henry Sheppard

Sheppard, George Henry – Age 94 of Dutch Settlement, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2019. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late William and Leah (Gosse) Sheppard.

He had eight siblings of which two remain to mourn his passing, Carl Sheppard and Helen Hamilton. He will be lovingly remembered by sons, Jack and Bill; daughter-in-law, Nancy; granddaughters, Tiffany and Kimberly. George was predeceased by his wife, Velma; and son, Bob.

George was a hard worker his whole life and was happy to rest after a good day’s work only to plan his next projects. He had a passion for golf, which he played well into his eighties, and always shot better than Bill. He enjoyed watching golf up until his final days.

Maria Theresa Cameron

Cameron, Maria Theresa – Age 90 of Stewiacke, passed away July 4, 2019 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Maria was active in the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and was a dedicated member of Holy Trinity and St. James Churches for over 40 years. She had been active on the Provincial Library Board and the IODE, Truro Chapter. Her working life was in accounting and as chief accountant for several companies over the years.

Surviving are her daughter, Debra; granddaughter, Sara; siblings, Victor, John, Camilla, Malcolm, and other extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Kathryn MacDonald; husband, Charles; sons, Karl and John; siblings, Francis, Clarence, Alan, Cathy.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held in Folly Village Cemetery, Glenholme, with Rev. Glen Eason officiating. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Laura Verna (Stone) Rudderham

Rudderham (Stone), Laura Verna – Age 68 of Enfield, passed away on July 3, 2019 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Point Edward, Cape Breton, Laura was a daughter of the late Daniel and Pearl (Hill) Rudderham.

Laura had many interests. She was inseparable from her dog, Bailey. She was proud to be a founding member of the Faithfully Speaking Toastmasters Club in Cole Harbour where she won numerous awards and speaking contests and was known for her comedy speeches. She loved attending horse races and visiting her horse, Lucy. Most of all, Laura was known for her humour and her ability to make those around her laugh. Laura enjoyed travelling, camping, gardening and most of all, nursing a sick plant back to life.

She is survived by her partner, Blane Page; her children, Leonard Stone (Shelly Tanner), Crystal Gregory (Jason), April Stone and Eliot Stone; her beloved grandchildren, Precious, Branson, Spencer, Sammy, Zachery, Jessy, Jozy and Riley; her siblings, Mary Lewis, Grace White (Curtis), Edwin Rudderham (Denise Van de Ven) and Nance Rudderham (Norman Saulnier). Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her former husband, Ernest Stone; her infant daughter, Mildred; her brothers, Ernie and Roger; her sisters, RoseAnn and Linda; and her brother-in-law, Leonard Lewis.

Laura lived in St. Peter’s and Enfield for all of her adult life but her heart was always in Point Edward.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Laura’s life will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13th in The Point Edward Seniors Hall, 2399 Point Edward Hwy., Point Edward, Cape Breton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to any SPCA or animal rescue fund would be appreciated.

Ronald Walter Penney - Funeral Announcement

Penney, Ronald Walter – Age 78, of Truro, passed away June 3, 2019, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Frederick and Ruth (Robertson) Penney.

Newf had been a member of Dartmouth City Police and was a part-time bartender. He later gave up the Police Force and became a full-time bartender. He first worked at Holiday Inn in Dartmouth and later went to Ship Victory Tavern where he worked for many years. He loved riding his motorcycle and was a great carpenter.

He will always be loved and missed by daughter, Bernadette; grandchildren, Melanie, Tamie, Dominic and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Mary-Jane, Savannah, Nevaeh, Danika, Bailey; sister, Ruby; loving companion, Shirley; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary; daughter, Karen; sister, Gertie.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. In keeping with Ronald’s request there will be no funeral service. All are welcome to drop in to a Celebration of Life, beginning at noon on Monday, July 1, at 86 Kaulback Street, Truro. Memorial donations may be made to Dartmouth Police Veterans Association.

Mark Hodgson

Hodgson, Mark – Age 81 of Dartmouth, passed away July 1, 2019 from natural causes. Born in Southampton, England, he was a son of the late George and Ena (Thompson) Hodgson.

He had been employed with NRC and BIO for many years.

Surviving are brother, Brian (Marsha); sons, Robin (Ivy); John (Tina).

Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Mark’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to a local SPCA.

Janet Marie Armstrong

Armstrong, Janet Marie – Age 60 of Brookfield, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2019, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Ivan and Elda (Carruthers) Archibald.

Janet had been employed with Nova Scotia Power for over 30 years. She enjoyed her many getaways to Cuba where she made a number of lifelong friends. Janet was an excellent cook and made the best spaghetti sauce.

Surviving are her husband, Aubrey; brother, Bob (Elaine) and their sons Jason and Nick; sister, Donna and her daughters Joie and Julie.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. In keeping with Janet’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Kenneth Lloyd Williams

Williams, Kenneth Lloyd – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kenneth Lloyd Williams, age 80, of Shubenacadie, on June 26, 2019 in The Mira, Truro. Born in Shubenacadie, he was a son of the late Lloyd and Mae (Stoddart) Williams.

Ken was a very well-known electrician and was a member of IBEW for 50 years. Besides his love for his family and work, he loved old-time dances and could dance like a pro doing a polka or round waltz. Ken was a past Master Mason of Lodge No. 98, Stewiacke.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beulah; step-children, Shelly (Scott), Mike (Melissa), Trish; “special” step-granddaughter, Christina; five step-grandsons, one great step-grandson. He is also survived by brother, Ralph (Marion); twin brother, Keith (Helen); many nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by brothers, Dale and Ron.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. By request there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private interment will be held at a later date.

Mabel Grace Meade

Meade, Mabel Grace – The home going of Mabel Grace Meade, age 82, took place in Moncton City Hospital on June 25, 2019. 

Mabel was someone who lived her faith and loved the Lord and her family above all else. She was married to Ron for 53 years; many of those years were in East Jeddore and Porters Lake before they moved to Moncton in 2013.

Mabel is survived by her daughter, Julianne Savoie (Roland) and son, Tyler (Shelly Preist); her much loved grandchildren, Joanna, Nicolas and Meaghan; as well as many very much loved and prayed for nieces and nephews. Mabel was predeceased by her parents, William and Theresa Power, and she was the last sibling of an amazing “Power” family! They are Harpell (Pearl), Ena (Tom) Arnold, Truman, Margaret MacLeod-Coggins, Everett, Fulton (Pearl), Walter, Roy, George (Joan), Elsie, Nora, Erma (George) Smith, Doreen (Bob) MacKay, Vivian, Orland and Lauretta.

Mabel loved spending time with her family, and she played the piano and organ at church for many years. She had a servant’s heart and would often be found reading her bible and praying for the families she loved so much! She was known for her amazing apple pies which she would spend all day baking only to give them all away! She was a leader of her faith in a subtle and quiet way, but there was no doubt of her love for the Lord!

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 28, and funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, both in Marine Drive Pentecostal Church, 8970 Hwy. 7, Head of Jeddore, Rev. John Power officiating. Mabel loved to support missions, so in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kings Castle Ministries in Glad Tidings Church, Moncton.

Ethel “Marie” (Patterson) Redmond - Funeral Announcement

Redmond (Patterson), Ethel “Marie” – Age 79 of Musquodoboit Harbour and formerly of Head of Jeddore. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marie in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour, on April 24, 2019. Marie was born in Upper Stewiacke, a daughter of the late Winifred and Erma (McMillan) Patterson.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Douglas Redmond, to whom she was married for 57 years; sister-in-law, Ruth Hicks; brothers-in-law, Donald Redmond, David Redmond, Gordon Redmond. She is survived by her children and their partners, Janet (Bobby Baker), Linda (Eddy St. George), and Steven (Annie Martin); grandchildren, Crystal, Jody, Danielle, and James; great-grandchildren, Meghan, Nikki, Gregory, and Justin; brothers, Truman (Jenny), Douglas, Cyrus (Maria Lorena); sister, Lilah (Danny); sisters-in-law, Catherine (Robert Ruggles), Susan; brother-in-law, Terrance Hicks; nieces and nephews.

Marie was a deeply spiritual person throughout her life and enjoyed participating in church activities, including singing in the church choir as a girl, teaching Sunday school and participating in the UCW. Growing up on a farm, Marie developed a true love of animals, especially horses, which she passed on to each of her children. She demonstrated her love of animals throughout her life with her many pets, as well as those of her family members, which she cared for at her “Paws and Pamper Inn” when their owners were away. Marie was an avid gardener and had a magic touch with plants that encouraged them to grow and thrive, whether indoors or outside. Like her father, Marie was musically talented playing multiple instruments, including piano, guitar, and harmonica. Marie’s artistic talent extended to drawing/painting, embroidery, and writing poetry. She had avid interests in politics and the British royal family.

Marie worked at Stanfield’s in Truro, where she met Doug Redmond. After they were married, she moved to Middle Musquodoboit and later to Head of Jeddore, making a wonderful home for her family as a stay-at-home mother for over 30 years. Marie’s apple pies were well-known in the community and attracted many visitors on Saturday mornings (baking day), when they knew they could get a slice of pie and a cup of tea. Once her children were grown, she went to work baiting trawl for local fishermen in the late 80s and early 90s. She loved working with the folks at Bakers Fisheries in East Jeddore.

However, time with her family remained the most important part of her life, and she continued to share her love – along with her love of animals, music, art, and good home baking – with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren throughout their lives. She will be deeply missed.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Tennesen and all nursing and medical staff of Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care, and to Dr. Najaf Nadeem and staff of the Cardiology TAVI Clinic, QEII Health Sciences Centre.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 11 a.m. in Hillside Cemetery, Middle Musquodoboit, with Rev. Joan Griffin officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in Musquodoboit Valley Bicentennial Theatre, 12390 Hwy. 224, Middle Musquodoboit. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital or a charity of your choice.

Mary “Lorraine” (Sampson) Peters - Funeral Announcement

Peters (Sampson), Mary “Lorraine” – Age 79, of Lower L’Ardoise. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Mary “Lorraine” (Sampson) Peters on February 11, 2019, in the Palliative Care Unit, VG Site, QEII, Halifax. She was a daughter of the late Annie Mae and Joseph Sampson.

Lorraine was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Gerard Francis Peters; and her brother, Joseph. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, sisters, brothers, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Lorraine enjoyed life’s simple pleasures; chatting with family and friends, berry picking, flowers, antiques, attending yard sales and knitting. For the past 10 years she had been knitting and donating comfort teddy bears to the IWK for children undergoing surgery, complicated medical tests, or who just need a bit of extra cheering up. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019 in Holy Guardian Angels Catholic Church, L’Ardoise. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of choice.

Donald Harvey Waller, PhD, P.Eng

Waller, Donald Harvey, PhD, P.Eng – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Don “Grampy” with family by his side, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Dad was born in Amherst on October 27, 1930 to Albert and Vivian (Crawford) Waller.

Left behind to cherish his memory are children, Aileen (Bruce Hebb) and Rod; grandchildren, Andrew (Johanna Galipeau) and Sarah (Dylan Sullivan); brother, Jack (Ken); Betty’s aunt, Catherine Hill; and special nieces, Mary and Heather. Dad was predeceased by his parents; his sweetheart, Betty; brother, Doug and his wife Audrey, his sister, Ardith and her husband Jack; his in-laws, Aileen and Raymond Robichaud; his daughter-in-law, Keltie Lewis; his sister-in-law, Margaret; nieces, Janet and Joan; and his best girl, Sophie.

Dad attended Queen Elizabeth High School, Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Technical College (“Tech”, now the Sexton Campus of Dalhousie University). He married the love of his life, Betty (Elizabeth Mullane) in London, England in 1953 while attending Imperial College as an Athlone Fellow. Dad worked for the City of Halifax before starting his teaching career with Queens University and then Tech. In the mid ‘60s Dad moved the family to Marblehead, Mass., for a research fellowship at Harvard. Dad’s career at Dalhousie included teaching, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, and the establishment of the Centre for Water Resources Studies. Dad was well-known in the environmental field, in Canada and internationally. He developed engineering codes across Canada and provincial environmental engineering policies. He served on the Technical Advisory Group for the Canada-Ontario Agreement on Great Lakes Water Quality. Dad received many awards throughout his career including the Engineers Nova Scotia first Gold Medal Award for his life of community and public service.

Aside from his family, Dad was dedicated to Foster Parents Plan Canada. He and Mum supported numerous foster children from all over the world for over 60 years, and in 1986 he was elected as the Chair of the Canadian Board of Directors. He and Mum loved to travel, but their favourite place outside of Canada was Bermuda. They enjoyed many trips there with family and friends. Dad’s happy place was the cottage at Spencer’s Point. As children, Rod and Aileen spent time there with grandparents and cousins. When grandchildren (Andrew and Sarah) came along, they became the beneficiaries of trips to the “Point”. After Mum passed away in 1991, Dad lived with Aileen, her husband Bruce and their children Andrew and Sarah. We were blessed to have such a wonderful opportunity to have Dad in our lives. He was the “third leg” in our parenting stool. He was a kind and patient man with a wicked sense of humour.

We’d like to thank the 2nd floor staff of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home for their care and understanding of Dad over the last year and a half.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 18th from 7-8:30 p.m. in St. Andrew’s United Church (Holmes Room), 6036 Coburg Rd. A celebration of Dad’s life will be held in St. Andrew’s United Church on Wednesday, June 19th at 11a.m. with a reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Foster Parents Plan Canada, St. Andrew’s United Church, St. Vincent’s Nursing Home or a charity of your choice.
