Weaty E.R. Hoyt

Hoyt, Weaty E.R. – Age 74, of Brookfield, passed away May 14, 2019, following a short battle with cancer. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Evelyn Rector.

Weaty lived in Brentwood all of her married life, and was a hairdresser in her younger years. She loved people and would always lend a helping hand. Her hobbies were tole painting and bingo.

Surviving are her son, Troy (Charity), Victoria, B.C.; granddaughter, Haley, Calgary; all of whom she dearly loved. She is also survived by her brother, James (Betty) Rector, Truro. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. In keeping with Weaty’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.

Mildred Alice (Kidson) Lovett

Lovett (Kidson), Mildred Alice – Age 80, of Dartmouth. It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our Mom on May 10, 2019, surrounded by family. Born in Clam Bay, she was the daughter of the late James Warren Kidson and Ruth Theresa (Bowser), and the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Millie worked for many years with Royal Bank and retired after 32 years with Maritime Life. She was very talented in knitting, cross-stitching, and crocheting; and most recently knitted over 300 beanie hats for the IWK NICU.

Surviving are her children, Carla Laybolt-Bezanson (David), Chester Basin; Teresa Godin (Marc), Lawrencetown; Blair and Dale, both of Edmonton; Lisa Richards (Robert), Dartmouth; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Clara, Margaret, Ruby; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William James Carlton “Carl”; brothers, Jim, Robert and Ralph.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A private graveside service will take place in Lake Charlotte Union Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a local SPCA for care of fur babies.

The family would like to thank the Palliative Care Team and VON for their dedication, compassion and tireless care for our Mom and family.

Marie Agnes “Aggie” Robichaud

Robichaud, Marie Agnes “Aggie” – It is with great sadness our family announces the passing, surrounded by love, at the age of 91, an amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, on May 7, 2019. Born in St. Charles, N.B., Aggie was the eldest daughter and one of 13 children of the late Theodore and Eva (Richard) Arsenault.

Aggie taught grades 1-8 in a one-room school house in St. Charles and was loved by all her students. Then she met and married the love of her life Ben and travelled the Atlantic provinces as Ben supervised construction projects before finally settling in Truro and raising their four children.

Aggie was a gifted musician, playing many instruments, a talent she inherited from her father and passed on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was well-known in fiddling and old-time country music circles and welcomed everyone with open arms into their home in Brookside hosting many a "jam" night. For 12 years Aggie and Ben were part of a volunteer group that organized the provincial Fiddle Workshop held in Bible Hill.

Aggie was a devout Catholic and proud Acadian. No one ever left her home hungry and her "Frisbee" molasses cookies were legendary!

Aggie is survived by her children, Ron (Wendy), North River; Nancy (Dave Cluett), Port Hawkesbury; Hadley, Brookside; grandchildren, Benjamin (Dawn) Robichaud, Sarah (Greg) Brown, Matt (Meg) Cluett, Genevieve (Jason) Maleyko, Oliver (Leanne) Cluett, Amber (Blaine) MacDonald, Melissa (Luc) LeBlanc, Melanie (Richard) Dalton; great-grandchildren, Jessie, Gabriela, Emily, Mikey, Gage and Preston; brothers, Emery, Albert, Camille and Gilles; sisters, Oliva, Louise and Winnie. She will also be missed by her puppy, Tristan. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ben; son, Fernand; brothers, Emile, Leonard, Tim; and sisters, Julianna and Yvette.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, May 10th at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Prince Street, Truro. Burial to follow on Saturday, May 11th at 2 p.m. in her home parish of Saint Charles, N.B., in the church that Ben and his father built. In her memory donations may be made to Colchester East Hants Hospice Society.

Allan Osborne “Dad” Gilbert

Gilbert, Allan Osborne “Dad” – Age 70 of Lawrencetown. It is with broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of our much loved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, on May 5, 2019. Born in Ingersoll, Ont., he was a son of Lillian (Dean) and the late Lorne Gilbert.

Besides his mother, Dad is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Jennifer (Devonport), his heartbroken children, Tommy (Jen), Elaine (Jim); beloved grandson, Denver (and his mother, Deana Gilbert); chosen granddaughter, Ashley (Jay); siblings, Carol (Al), Lorne (Dorothy), Paulette (Bruce); sisters and brothers-in-law, Susan, Christine (Dave), Debbie (Harold), Nancy (Joey), Robert (Eveline), Ruth (Wade), Linda, Lisa; many much-loved nieces and nephews. Besides his father, he was predeceased by brothers, Johnny (April 2019), Clinton; brothers-in-law, Alex and Kim.

Dad worked as a tradesman in the drywall industry for 48 years and retired only due to injury. He was a loving, funny man. He was devoted to his wife, “Queenie,” and family, Leroy, Pearla and the young fella. He also loved all of his pets over his lifetime, whether they be birds, cats or dogs. Dad's favourite thing was to go to the family cottage in Tangier on weekends and mow the grass or putter around the yard, work on the various projects he and Alex had on the go, be on the waterfront or just relax with the neighbours for crumpets and tea. He loved to beat anyone he could in a game of crib, especially the neighbours. He loved to skunk you, and used his many game superstitions in order to win. Dad loved to eat, although by looking at him you would never know. Dad loved classic cars and always talked of his favourite, a 1956 Crown Vic. Anyone who met Dad could see he was a very special person and he loved having the sistas fuss over him.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 11 at 2 p.m. in Colby Community Church, 131 Colby Dr., Cole Harbour. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite animal charity.

Joan Doreen Wort

Wort, Joan Doreen – Age 90 of Upper Stewiacke, died peacefully at home on May 3, 2019. Born in West Hartlepool, England, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Winifred (Gibson) Shepherd.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Dr. A. John Wort (2007). She is survived by her sons, Jonathan (Rosemary) of Upper Stewiacke; and Andrew of Canning; grandchildren, John (Kaley) and Sarah, Gabrielle and Hèléne; great-granddaughters, Emma and Abby.

Joan emigrated from England to Toronto in 1968, moving to Waverley in 1970. She and John retired to Upper Stewiacke in 1995. Joan trained as a nurse at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle Upon Tyne, where she worked as a nurse in the children’s ward. She also worked for a time at the Halifax School for the Blind. Her primary focus was her family and home. Joan loved cooking, quilting and reading.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 10th at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Anglican Church, Truro. Family flowers only. If desired, memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church Discretionary Fund or Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke.

Kenneth Ross Arnold – Burial Announcement

Arnold, Kenneth Ross – Burial for Kenneth Ross Arnold, who passed away February 16, 2019, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2019 in East Jeddore Cemetery.

John Arthur Brown

Brown, John Arthur – Age 88 of Elderbank. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of John Arthur Brown on April 29, 2019 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Kempt Shore, he was a son of the late Walter Edmond Brown and Sarah Jane Shay.

John had an early successful career in the insurance field with Standard Life prior to establishing Uncle John’s Trading Post, a well-known sporting goods store and gathering place in Musquodoboit Harbour, which operated from 1963 to 1974. Known to many as simply “Uncle John”, his shop catered to the many sport fishermen and hunters attracted to Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. Over time this evolved to include the tourism trade as well. Later in life, he established the John B Agency as a manufacturers’ agent, representing numerous product lines in Atlantic Canada for over 30 years.

John accumulated a wide circle of friends and acquaintances from many years of business travel and had a deep well of generosity for others. Known to be hard working, fiercely independent and outspoken, he was a sharp dresser and a great storyteller. John had a lifelong interest in history and things “Nova Scotian”.  He took an active role in politics beginning in the Stanfield era, later serving as President of the Eastern Shore P.C. Association, as well as managing several election campaigns at both the provincial and federal levels.

John is survived by sons, Glen (Carol Withrow), Bible Hill; Greg, Dartmouth; daughters, Linda Brown, Castle Rock, Colorado; Diane Green (Sid), Mount Uniacke; Barbara Brown Conrod (Scott), Port Williams; and Beverley Brown-Sweeting (Ian), Dartmouth; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by older brother, Walter “Buster” Brown (Prospect, NS).

Cremation has taken place. A service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Lil Maslow

Maslow, Lil – Age 82 of Lake Echo, died at home on April 28, 2019, following a short illness. He was born in Lithuania in 1936. His parents, Victor and Natalie Maslow, fled from Russia during the First World War in 1917, and during the Second World War the family had to flee again. They came through many places as refugees in Eastern Europe and arrived in Germany/Dresden at the end of the war. Lil’s mother wrote to several governments (including England, USA, Canada) about their situation, and asked for immigration. His family received an invitation to Canada from the late Honorable Prime Minister MacKenzie King; in August 1949 they received a warm welcome by the Canadian government. As a result, Lil grew up to know many languages that his mother taught them. Lil excelled in school and went on to university.

Lil was a mechanic technician in the aircraft space industry in Ontario and continued servicing industrial air conditioning for Carrier as a trouble shooter all over Canada and USA. After several years, he was transferred and moved his family to the Atlantic Provinces and settled in Lake Echo. Lil enjoyed taking his family on many adventures. He taught his sons how to look after cars and transferred his knowledge to them.

After Lil’s retirement from active work, he enjoyed meeting many people at the local gas station and keeping his community safe as a volunteer in “Citizens on Patrol” with the RCMP. At home his passion was to help neighbours and give practical advice to anyone who needed it.  He was “Mr. Fix It.”

Surviving are his wife, Anne; sons, Daniel (Lisa), Ontario; their children, Emma and Erin; Jonathan (Jackie), Texas; their children, AlexaJo, Kaelah, Isabelle and Zachary.

A Celebration of his Life will be at a later date (likely in July) in Lake Echo Fellowship Baptist Church, Mineville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lake Echo Fellowship Baptist Church, 17 Peter Court, Mineville, NS B2Z 1K2.

Vivian Georgena Taylor

Taylor, Vivian Georgena – Age 80, of Dartmouth, passed away April 24, 2019 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Dean, she was a daughter of the late George and Ena (MacKay) Dean.

Vivian’s music career started at the age of 15 with her first piano. She and her husband, Robert started Last Chance Band which spanned over 25 years. Times with her family and her love for her grandchildren were most important to her.

Surviving are her husband, Robert; whom she married in 1959; son, Corey (Karen); step-granddaughter, Tammy (Justin), their children Lily, Caitlyn, Evelyn; step-granddaughter, Julia; son, Kendall (Krista), their children, Courtney, Sarah; son, Joseph (Rhonda), their children, Rachael, Chelsey; sister, Nina (John) Manthorne; sister-in-law, Rose Dean; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brother, Freeman.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Monday, April 29, at 11 a.m. in St. James United Church, Upper Musquodoboit, with student minister Calvin Burt officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Twin Clyde Hyslop

Hyslop, Twin Clyde – of Fletchers Lake. It is with great sadness that we, the family of the late Twin Clyde Hyslop, invite you to honour his passing with us. Twin passed peacefully on April 24, 2019 surrounded by family and friends in Oakwood Terrace, Dartmouth, where he spent his final years with his wife, Agnes, the love of his life. Born in Halifax to the late Thomas and Heather Hyslop, he began his family, whom he loved and was proud of, in Halifax, then moved and settled into the community of Fletchers Lake.

In his earlier years he was a carpenter for Halifax Dockyard. He worked for many years for the Halifax Postal Service. He was a proud member of the Mi’kmaq First Nations, serving as President of the Native Council, and was the Culture Advisor of Zone 3. He officiated at many ceremonies in his capacity as a respected Elder.

He was predeceased by children, Abigale, 24 hours old; and Gregory, who passed at age 20. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Agnes; children, Patricia (William) Page, Kennetcook; sons, Derrick (Sunny), Fletchers Lake; Jeffrey, Nine Mile River; and Annebelle Hyslop (Bill), Fletchers Lake. He was a loved grandfather of eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and one foster child.

Visitation will be Monday, April 29th from 7-9 p.m., and Tuesday, April 30th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with funeral service on Wednesday, May 1st at 2 p.m., all in St. Thomas Anglican Church, Fall River, Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

Gloria Mae Currie

Currie, Gloria Mae – Age 80 of Truro. The passing of Gloria Mae Currie occurred in Wynn Park Villa, Truro, on April 23, 2019. Gloria was the daughter of the late Marion McWilliams and step-daughter of the late Richard McWilliams.

Gloria is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Shirley Currie of Stewiacke, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gloria was an employee of Stanfield’s Ltd., Truro for many years. She was a member of the Peoples Church of Truro. Gloria was happiest doing her beautiful handiwork with her needles. She was truly gifted in these areas.

After her Mom’s passing, Gloria moved to Westside Villa, then to Wynn Park Villa where she found a new life of contentment with the staff and residents.

We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Louise and Jim Boyle, Sheila Peck, Sheila Dale, the Recreational Department, all staff, and Dr. Singh and Dr. Locke.

John Anthony “Chuck” Butyn

Butyn, John Anthony “Chuck” – Age 81, Lake Fletcher, passed away due to a final stroke on April 20, 2019, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII Site, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Krabbendijke, The Netherlands, John survived the Second World War and immigrated to Prince Edward County, Ontario when he was seven years old with his parents, Matthias and Jana, and sisters, Francis, Marsha, Kay, and Janie, while sister, Pi remained in The Netherlands.

At age 18, he joined the Air Force and was one of the first Non-Destructive Radiation Testing inspectors in Canada which eventually launched a successful career in the private sector.

He was introduced to his wife, Phyllis, in Fenwick, Ont., through her brother John (also in the Air Force); John Butyn was like another brother and father to Phyllis’s seven younger brothers and like a son to her mother, Margaret. While in the Air Force, he lived in six provinces and eventually settled in Lake Fletcher in 1985. Known for his homemade quirky inventions such as the first toggle-switch mute button, two-seat bicycle, go-cart (the Butyn Rocket), a Bell utility van that was converted into a camper van (the Blue-Assed Baboon), and personal wood carvings, you never knew what the next invention would be. He was a man of few words, but a man of principle and would not suffer fools gladly. A devoted and loyal family man and good neighbour, he enjoyed, from his quiet corner of the couch, close family get-togethers with lots of food, music, and laughter.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years of marriage, Phyllis (Murray); sisters, Pi, Marsha, and Francis; children, Linda, Suzan, and Tony; grandchildren, Shane, Matthew, Maggie, Thomas, Luke, and Mark; great-grandchildren, Elnora and Elwyn. He will be sorely missed and forever in our hearts and minds.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 23rd at 11 a.m. in St. John’s United Church, Fall River, with Rev. Dr. Sally Shaw officiating. In lieu of gifts and flowers, please donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia and/or QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation as a thank you for the excellent care he received in the Neurology Ward 7.4 during his final days.

Stanley Merlyn Clark

Clark, Stanley Merlyn – We are saddened to announce the death of Stanley Merlyn Clark in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home on April 17, 2019. He was born in 1933 to the late Mary M. (Fraser) and Stanley Neil Clark (New Glasgow).

After leaving Stellarton High School in Grade 11, he went to work at the Bank of Nova Scotia. He returned to Stellarton High School in 1952 where he graduated from Grade 12 and received the Oulton Trophy which is given to those with the following traits: character, ability, leadership, sports and general interest in his classmates. He attended Dalhousie University. His work tenure of employment included CN Express, Ford Motor Company, Winthrop Labs, ABDick, and Jet Tools and Equipment.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gwen (Kerr); sons, Dr. Gregory (Veronica), Maple Ridge, B.C.; Dr. Scott (Darlene), Bedford; Alan (Anne), Truro; grandsons, James (Erica), Idaho; Alexander, Truro; granddaughters, Alyssa and Nicole Clark, Maple Ridge; nephew, Daniel Clark (Jeri), Colorado; niece, Monica Jacobs (Peter), Colorado; sister-in-law, Liz Kerr, Bedford; brother-in-law, Carl Sollows, Halifax. He was predeceased by sister, Mora Sollows; brother, Dr. Donald Clark.

A special thank you to Dr. Ernest B. Johnson and all the special caregivers of St. Vincent’s, as well as Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.

Janette Faith Arnold

Arnold, Janette Faith – Age 67 of Oyster Pond, Jeddore, passed away into the loving arms of her Saviour on April 16, 2019. Born in Musquodoboit Harbour, she was the daughter of Noreen (Williams) and the late Frank Thomson.

She is survived by her husband, Captain N.R. Arnold; daughters, Kelly Corkery (Tony); and Jennifer Arnold (Glenn Skiffington). She leaves behind her beloved grandsons, Russell, Micah, Seth and Levi. Also left to mourn her loss are her brother, Donald Thomson and his wife Meridy; nephew, Kenneth, and niece, Brittany Perry (Chris). In addition, many special brothers and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and cousins will feel her absence.

Janette was an active member of the church and an avid community volunteer. You could find her every year working in the famous cheesecake room for the tea and sale. She was the proud recipient of the Women of Excellence Award, a well-deserved honour. She worked for 22 seasons as a Heritage Interpreter at the Fisherman’s Life Museum, an ideal role as she was blessed with an incredible ability to connect with people. She was the unofficial family historian and a true Scot at heart. She enjoyed reading, travelling with three special girlfriends, and loved to spend time with her grandsons in the pool. Mom will be remembered for her beautiful singing voice.

Visitation will be Sunday, April 28, 7-9 p.m., and funeral service will be Monday, April 29, at 2 p.m., both in Jeddore United Baptist Church, 8 West Jeddore Road, with Pastor Aubrey Deslatte officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Jeddore United Baptist Church or Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital – Palliative Care.

Arnold H. Stewart

Stewart, Arnold H. – The passing of Arnold H. Stewart, age 79, of Hilden and formerly of North River, occurred April 12, 2019, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Arnold was very proud of his grandchildren and marveled at their university achievements and ability with computers. Arnold had retired from the trucking industry with some of his last work being on the construction of the Cobequid Pass. Arnold always enjoyed driving and even into his late 70s, he could drive solo to Cape Breton to visit friends. During their retirement, he and Donna journeyed several times to the sunny beaches of Cuba where they enjoyed the local people and a break from the snow.

Arnold is remembered by his wife, Donna; daughter, Kimberly (husband Chris Franklin), North River; sons, Allan (wife Wendy), Brookvale, N.B.; and Andrew, Bible Hill; as well as his grandchildren, Emily and Brandon Franklin, both of Fredericton; sisters-in-law, Margaret Martin, Bible Hill; Alice (Frank) Adamson, Patsy (Winston) Stockley; brother-in-law, Allan (Jackie) Adamson, all of Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents, Angus and Sadie Stewart (of Skye Glen); brother, Peter; sister, Annie; brother-in-law, Frank Adamson.

Gordon Douglas Gammell

Gammell, Gordon Douglas – Age 60 of Dean, passed away unexpectedly in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, on April 12, 2019. Born in Middle Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Cecil and Mona (Kindervater) Gammell.

Gordon valued the training he received and was an active, dedicated member of the Upper Musquodoboit Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He loved to tinker around machinery and enjoyed his work with Grandview Farms.

Surviving are his partner, Jane; daughters, Tanya, Elaina (Frank), Shannon (Brian), Michelle (Chris), Nicole, Jessica, Alicia (Anthony), Jocelyn, April, Virginia (Korey); 18 grandchildren; brother, Wayne (Glenda); sisters, Shirley (Bill) Barker, Frances Perrin, Elizabeth (Alvin) Lemmon, Martha Gammell, Wanda Smith; brother-in-law, Victor MacKinnon; sister-in-law, Nancy Gammell; mother-in-law, Betty Fisher. He was predeceased by brothers, Calvin, Terrence; sisters, Beverly and Dorothy; brothers-in-law, David Perrin and Kennard Smith.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean, Calvin Burt student minister officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Lung Association of Nova Scotia.

Robert Charles “Bob” McNeil

McNeil, Robert Charles “Bob” – Age 70, of Wittenburg, passed away April 5, 2019.   Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Daniel and Christine McNeil

He was loved by many, but most of all by his daughters, Denise (Paul King), Carrie; step-children, Becky (Mike McCabe), Wayne Dorey; and especially the love of his life, Patricia Dorey. He was also cherished by grandchildren, Haley, Austin, Lily, Sophie; step-grandchildren, Meredith, Austin; two brothers; six sisters; nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers.

Bob drove a truck for a number of years for Thompson and King’s Trucking and before that was a mechanic for several years. He enjoyed four-wheeling and being in the woods. He loved to tinker in the garage and was always there to help anyone whenever he could.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held Saturday, April 20, from 2–5 p.m., in Riverline Community Centre, Grono Road, Dutch Settlement. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Marie Yvonne Gaudet - Funeral Announcement

Gaudet, Marie Yvonne – Age 81 of Saltsprings and formerly of Truro, passed away March 30, 2019 in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Gore, she was a daughter of the late Dale and Manola (Starratt) Sim.

Surviving are her partner, Robert “Bob” Probert; son, Dana (Lois), Stewiacke; daughter, Rena (Ted), Brantford, Ont.; two granddaughters; one grandson; sisters, Gwen, Alta, Joanne (Arnold), Debbie, Sandra (Epke). She was predeceased by sister, Lorna. She was predeceased by sister, Lorna.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, April 5 at 1 p.m. in Elmsdale Baptist Church, 510 Highway 2, Enfield, with Rev. Annie De Lamirande officiating. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Irene Clara Deyarmond

Deyarmond, Irene Clara – Age 83, of Upper Stewiacke, passed away peacefully April 3, 2019, in Enfield, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Eastville, she was a daughter of the late Alvin and Lyle (McCoul) Ellis.

She was a very loving mom, nana, great-nan, aunt, sister and sister-in-law. Mom was a faithful member of the Upper Stewiacke Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for many years. She was a beautiful knitter and passed her talents on to her granddaughters. We have all benefited and will treasure her wonderful creations. Mom loved the game of Yahtzee and played weekly with her best friend, Beverley. She loved country music, especially her favourite singer, Merle Haggard. Mom loved bluegrass and followed the bluegrass circuit for over 35 years, travelling and camping with her bluegrass friends throughout N.S., N.B., and P.E.I.

Mom is survived by her loving daughters, Wenda Cook (Ed), Enfield; Kathy Barter (Irven), Calgary; Arlene Rutherford (Layton), Upper Stewiacke; Shirley Lynn Potts (Craig), Calgary; Mary Cox, Brookfield; Tammy Kent (Andrew), South Branch; Susan Deyarmond (Ray Farnham), Calgary; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she cherished, Jill Turner (Mark), Cameron and Rylan, Brad Cook (Denise), Mason, Tanner and Ashton, Jenna Barter (Mike), Ned Barter, Courtney Hanham (Steve), Calley, James Rutherford (Erin), Addison, Alexandria and Joel Potts, Natalie Petley (Stefan), Levi and Casey, Shanda Glinz (Scott), Samuel, Katelyn David (Brendon), Emmett, Jason Kent (Nicole), Dawson, Alana Kitson (Billy), Brooke Irene, Cody and Brody Farnham. She is also survived by her sisters, Marion Cox, Stewiacke; Shirley Fleming (Bruce), Brookfield; sisters-in-law, Noreen Ellis, Frances Ellis (Garnet), Velma Fisher; brother-in-law, Benny Ouellette; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mom was predeceased by her husband, Eldridge (1976); her brothers, Ron and Alex; sisters, Eva and Anna; brothers-in-law, Curtis Fisher and Wayne Deyarmond.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Lori Wood and nurse Donna, Dr.Singh, Dr. Cortney Smith, Dawn Ross, and the many VON nurses who took such wonderful care of Mom. Special thanks to Jill Turner who took special care of her Nan and our Mom. We would also like to make special mention of Mom’s friends, Shirley and Dave Ogilvie and Geraldine Dunlap for making sure that Mom was taken care of and getting her to the bluegrass festivals when she became ill.

John Cameron "Johnny" Gilbert

Gilbert, John Cameron “Johnny” – It is with great sadness that the family of Johnny Gilbert, age 72, announces his passing on April 1, 2019. He is survived by his mother, Lillian; daughter, Patricia; son, Jason; grandson, Steven; granddaughters, Candace and Courtney; great-grandchildren, Avery, Lucas, and Ellie Ray; sisters, Carol (Al) and Paulette (Bruce); brothers, Allan (Jennifer) and Lorne (Dorothy); as well as nephews, David, Tommy, Brian, Ryan, Robert, Matthew; and niece, Elaine.

Johnny was a drywall taper for the last 50 years, one of the best in the business. He loved attending family gatherings where he was often the brunt of a joke which he truly enjoyed. He loved his cars and attending car shows and was known to have a heavy foot. Johnny was the one we all knew we could count on to be there in any time of need. We all love and will miss him greatly.

He was predeceased by his father, Lorne; wife, Leona; brother, Clinton. Cremation has taken place and graveside service will be held Monday, April 8th at 1 p.m. in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens, Main Street, Dartmouth.
